  • Hansa-Lloyd was formed by the merger of 2 German car manufacturers in 1914.
In 1929 it was bought by Borgward which had been formed by Carl Borgward in 1924.
Until after WW2 Bremen based Hansa-Lloyd were truck manufacturers but Lloyd produced a small car from 1949 initially with a 2 stroke 300 cc engine .
After the war there was a demand for small cars and also and also by Borgward trading as a 2nd car company they were allocated more steel.
The very 1st cars (Lloyd 300) were made from wood and fabric bodies (293cc) and could be driven without taking a new driving test. (they look similar to the 600).
The total production of the Lloyd 600 was over 176,000.
Borgward were a large manufacturer and produced over a million cars overall and at its peak employed 23,000.
In 1961 Borgward was very controversially forced into liquidation and Carl Borgward died shortly afterwards a broken man.
The Lloyd 600 was introduced in 1955 and has a 2 cylinder 4 stroke 596cc air cooled engine with a 3 speed gearbox giving 19 hp. top speed was 62mph.
She was restored in about 2001 and was for about 6 years in a museum in Lincolnshire, I bought her in June 2010 from West Wales. from the early 1960s she had 1 owner for about 35 years, 30 of them in storage.
I have been in contact with all these previous owners and have some pictures of the rebuild.
Lloyd also made small vans and mini buses with engines of 596cc.
There are a number ofLloyds remaining in Germany but I believe there are only 6 in the UK and even less roadworthy.
The German Lloyd has no connection with the Grimsby built small manufacturer Lloyd 1936-1951.
    These are even rarer now.
This Lloyd LP 600 is in extremely rare right hand drive configuration, in fact so rare are the RHD cars Lloyd only moved the steering wheel, column controls and pedals across when making RHD cars and left the speedo and ammeter in situ on the left. Restored around 20 years ago our Lloyd then resided in a private museum for many years.

I think the wire for speedometer has to pass through (into) the fuel tank, instead on the top of it, if i remember. Gorgeous unit though
