    I have ONE tomato plant in a large tub this year. It guzzles an entire watering can (7 litres) of water DAILY. I supplement mine with a weekly dose of Tomorite tomato food plus an additional bonus every few weeks of yeast solution. This is a half bag of sugar, 2 packets of yeast, left to ferment overnight with hot ( not boiling ) water filling a 5 litre water bottle. A cup of this added to your watering can will activate the plant's sugar production, the solution is also effective on strawberries.

    great tips thanks Tony. Your tomato plants look like real cordons/ columns, with the fruits going close to the main stem. Even when I grow "cordon" varieties, I get something very bushy with the fruits all way out. I think if I had narrow columns I'd get more plants in. Could you make a video on pruning for tidy tomato plants? Thanks

    Just came across this video after watching your potato in buckets vids. I've been growing tomatoes for years now and this is an excellent video for anyone starting to grow them and wanting to get the best harvest. I do pretty much all of these and it really makes a difference. I'm doing 38 different varieties this year, most of which I've never grown before but for me that's the best part of growing heirloom tomatoes, you have so much choice and can create a really beautiful selection of tomatoes.

    I use the bamboo sticks as well but I use cut strips of old cotton t-shirts to tie them to the sticks. The cotton doesn't damage the stalks of the plant. I live in a windy area and hard ties wear bad places on the stalks.

      The San marzanos are a small paste tomato, similar to a Roma, but fleshier. They make a great Italian sauce with onion and basil. The Cherokee purple are large and great to slice for sandwiches as they have a deep almost smoky flavor. They’re both great producers too, giving me lots of harvest here in Louisville in the states.

    Very useful video Tony, thanks very much. The only feedback/query I have is regarding your comments on suckers (side shoots) - you said that you must remove them and that they bear no fruit - I think that is incorrect; the need for removing them is dependent on whether or not they are indeterminate or determinate varieties. Also, they absolutely WILL produce fruit; if left alone, a sucker will grow into another ‘main stem’, which of course can become unmanageable and a burden on nutrients if you allow too many to grow. But they definitely do produce fruits - I always propergate my suckers (some, not all) in water and then plant into soil at different stages so that I have a continuous crop throughout the entirety of the season to as late as possible as suckers will grow into full plants themselves if propagated and planted.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 роки тому +1

      Yes they will bare fruit. What I meant was that with short season its not viable to grow them out too and get ripened fruitSorry for the late reply

  • @pauliewalnuts2007
    @pauliewalnuts2007 5 років тому +2

    Suckers do produce flowers and fruit Tony. I don't prune mine (indeterminate tomatoes). I let them grow as they want, just support the branches, but they all bare fruit. Pruning the suckers does make a prettier and cleaner plant than just letting them grow. :-)

    Napoli paste, San Marzano, Gold Sun cherry, constoluto Florentino. I used to grow Romas for sauces but now prefer the napoli. And I always grew the purple cherokees but they ripened too fast on me and the mice got most of them. I usually also grow Indigo Rose but forgot to start them this year. For watering, I'll be adding 2 ft lengths of pvc piping into the soil as you do your soda bottles.
    Re fish parts. I always add some into the soil around my peach trees which love them. My sons used to catch fish for me just so we'd keep our peach trees healthy and producing well. Never had a cat problem.

    Hi Tony, great video! I have a question re potting on. I thought that the young plants were kept in small (3") pots to deliberately cause them to go pot bound and "force " the first truss and thereafter reproductive growth rather than vegetative. I have grown tomatoes since I was kid, every year now for nearly fifty years but it is always a learning process. This year I have eleven different plants in the greenhouse: Banana Legs, Purple Cherry, Red Pear, Sweet Casady, Tamina, Cour de Bue, Principe Borghese, Scatalone, Tigrella, St Pierre and Valencia!!

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  5 років тому

      Great varieties John. Lets look at it slightly different to how you are currently, Tomatoes are tall plants, anything that gets big and puts out a lot of weight of fruit needs a good grounding. I do understand the point your making but if you were 6ft and i jammed your feet into size 1 shoes and made you shoe bound to you think your feet would support your body? Why people want to rush fruiting is beyond me, there is no need for it we have a long enough season to produce 6 and 7 trusses properly and ensure they are all ripe at the end of the season. Cramming roots is not good for any plant like anything in life good foundations are important or the house will come tumbling down. Same with plants mate

    • @innertube47
      @innertube47 5 років тому

      @@simplifygardening Think I'll go with that Tony next year! Related to it, do you agree with waiting till the first flower truss opens before planting out? It is always annoying that following this and the 3" pot rule the plants are always quite tatty when planted out after being so healthy earlier.

    Tony this it's a very concise growing guide and reassuring that I am already following some of these tips for example with the water bottles amusing 2L milk bottles in between each plant.
    I have 34 plants in the ground outside, 2 hanging baskets with tumbling Toms, six plants in pots outside and five plants in the greenhouse. The varieties are Tumbling Tom red and yellow Santonio, Black Russian,Sungold Gardeners Delight, Red Cherry Ace55, and Cuor di Bue.🤞

    Thanks for the sunken bottle tip, I'm on to that next year.
    As for varieties, A neighbour on our allotments got his seed order wrong some years back and he received a variety called AGRO which is an Italian Plum type tom. I soon got on to it and now its the main tom I grow in my houses. lovely eater but better still its fab simply cut.fried and on toast or pasta.
    This year (and most years) I'm also growing Purple Ukraine, Sun Cherry Premium and Black Cherries.

Every year i have people banging down my door wanting my salsa but one problem i have is getting my jars back any suggestion as to what to do there as jars are expensive not to mention some are very old from my grandmother and even great grandmother. I don't like loosing them should i just stop giving them out or what?

    I am 70 and have been growing tomatoes for years with info gleaned from Dr Hessayon's and many other's books and some very contradictory seed packet advice. I wish I had found your UA-cam tips much earlier as my previous results were often disastrous. The only down side to following your tips is that I now have a greenhouse full of tomatoes, in various stages of growth and my conservatory looks like Kew Gardens. I am daily delivering my excess to my neighbours. I am now in the process of viewing all your other veggie posts...

      @@simplifygardening The German Pinks get to be 1 to 2 lbs per fruit. They are very meaty, fewer seeds. They did originate in Germany, it is suspected they come from the Brandywine. They were brought to the U. S. in about 1881. The German Pinks originally were from the "Bavaria" territory in Germany pre 1871.

    As of last year my new favorite cherry tomato is Chocolate Sprinkles and the tomatoes I grow for slicing and canning are Early Girl. I live in NE Nevada at 5997 ft altitude. Our growing season is very short. This year we will do a greenhouse that will allow us at least another two weeks before and after our growing season for heat loving plants. It will have to have a removable roof because temperatures can get well over 100 degrees F in the months of July and August. On the other side of nature we can actually get a killing frost in August. Early Girl takes only 50 days but is indeterminate so keeps on fruiting. With the greenhouse perhaps we can get some heirlooms to actually produce enough fruit to make them worth the expense of buying the plants.

    Outside of Memphis, TN USA here. I grow beefsteaks and paste tomatoes, Ponderosa, Porterhouse, Supersteak, Big Beef, San Marzano, Amish Paste and many others. I noticed in many UK videos, that most grow a plum-sized tomato that has large trusses of fruit and few if any beefsteak varieties. Is this variety suited better to the climate there, is it a better tasting variety or is it just a popular standard?
