A good debater can debate both sides of an issue. Apparently that is not allowed anymore. I remember in school when two students would debate an issue, and then the instructor would say SWITCH. Now each student will debate the opposite point of view.

Clearly, you missed what the definition of critical thinking is and that evidence is a necessary part of it. The evidence part is usually missing when republicans are involved hence fewer like research (requiring evidence and review) and more prefer their Facebook news stories as evidence or anecdotes in the best case scenario.
In my CA district all teachers were given a gag order in regards to politics under threat of termination. The only exception was Civics courses and only if it was related to specific lessons within the curriculum. From my admittedly narrow perspective, I never witnessed indoctrination.
There are similar problems in Alabama though not quite as bad. Most of the kids are normal and not looking to hurt teachers, but there is this small minority of, well frankly Black girls, who are just hoping to get the teacher in trouble. I teach, econ, government and debates so it's a mine field. I could tell stories that are just crazy.
The trend away from critical thinking mirrors the shift in education away from classical ideals, and toward the pragmatism of securing a job. it's tragic to see parents steer their children toward lucrative job fields so they can get ROI for the tuition expenses. And we so we end up with financial and societal influencers without a proper ethics education.

Should the most Righteous person ever possible not proclaim who he is so the wicked can feel better about themselves and mislead the youth? Certainly not. Any counter arguments?
It sounds like he's making this up as he goes with the interview. But he is right that the students should learn both sides and then come up with their logic.
That is a gift, every class is different, different levels of understanding, different strong individuals, different backgrounds. A teacher needs to be an actor to a certain extent in order to engage the pupils.
