  • This week we cover our inverter/ charger upgrade in out RV where we live full time. We chose the Renogy 3000watt inverter so we can run our AC for the dogs from time to time. So far we love it.

    I had the same inverter charger on my boat, well the freedom marine version. If you have the remote for it you can set the gel profile and appropriate temperature setting to dial in voltage for lithium. I ran it for a year like that before upgrading to Victron for the power assist feature when running my scuba tank compressor. Just bought a class b and probably just going to run a renogy since I don't need all the features or reliability of the Victron.

      I still have the freedom marine version. I have not had a lot of luck with the Renogy over the last year or so. The internal fan has stopped working about two weeks in, and have a weird setup to begin with because the inverter has to stay on all the time for two circuits to work properly, even when plugged in. I am thinking about either re0designing a new system or having a second one. I appreciate the information, and are you talking about the "remote" the panel that shows the status and such, or a wireless remote? Thanks for stopping by. Sorry for the delay in responding, my cancer has made me a little slower in responding, but I still want to talk to everyone that takes the time to comment!

      @@sandypawstravel the status panel I'm talking about, but I think you can set the charge profile through dip switches as well. Good to know about the renogy inverter, maybe I'll avoid that on the van and go with something better. So you're saying even when plugged in the inverter has to be on to have AC power like it doesn't have an internal transfer switch?

      @@christianriedel7017 Yeah, I thought maybe it was just my setup because we have two lines out that even when plugged in at the campground will not work unless the inverter is on. I was highly disappointed to find out there was no power passthrough when off. But then I guess they would not advertise that negative. I appreciate your answer. I still have the remote, and I believe the original papers. I will look how to set the parameters on the freedom marine.

      Obviously you have good taste because these videos are doing a lot better than the other travels videos. Hopefully that means that soon I will be having more like them, just not for a couple weeks...

    Why are you using 14-2 romex? If this is capable of bypassing 30A, should you not be using 10-2?

    • @sandypawstravel
      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому

      You are very right, BUT... This is the strangest setup I have ever seen. I am even thinking that maybe new there was not an inverter as stock? The two 14-2s are actually going to two circuits in the breaker box and then the only slightly larger wire runs into the breaker in a breaker that was meant to be running one of those circuits. I am going to run a larger wire, and have it do more than wire nut into those two circuits. I think there needs to be a separate video since this is so odd, it helps to see what I am saying. All of that wire was existing on the old inverter and I am going to upgrade it all when I do some Solar this winter. Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for your input... you werev100 percent correct!

    • @johnvicente796
      @johnvicente796 Рік тому

      The setup should be you have a 10-2 wire that goes on the input side of the inverter charger. Then when you connect to shore power you can safely transmit 30A. On the output side of the inverter charger you should also run 10-2 into a 30A breaker box. You can then split your 30A into two 15A circuits. Those 15A circuits can use 14-2 romex around your trailer.

      @@johnvicente796 Yes, clearly the previous owner was looking for something VERY specific when it came to the inverter. I am going to make a lot of changes to it because I also want to be able to cool the dogs sometimes if we decide to boondock. I am just doing a little at a time. Thanks for your input, it will help when I get to that point in the upgrades! Keep in touch!

    Any update? How has this inverter charger been working for you?

    • @sandypawstravel
      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому +2

      It works as advertised, I have big plans for it for boondocking, which will be the better test, but we have been full hookup most of the time. I want to do solar before we boondock more. I will certainly keep everything updated. Thanks for asking and stopping by. If there is a specific question I am happy to answer them, but as far as recommendation goes yes, I like it.

    What will you be doing with the old inverter? Is it for sale?

    • @sandypawstravel
      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому

      I am thinking right now that I will keep it as a spare or maybe set it up separately to control an air conditioner in it's own circuit. I was not planning to sell it at this time. Thanks for watching and stopping by to leave a message!

    You replace a $1,400 xentrax freedom inverter for a $750 chains built 😮

      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому +2

      I didn't exactly replace it, because I kept it. I know full well the value it has, but I needed a charger for my Lithium batteries. The new one has more output as well. Thank you for watching, and thanks for your input. I really do appreciate it!

    How do you add solar charging to this unit? Is it built in

    • @sandypawstravel
      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому

      As far as I know, the only way to add solar to any system is by putting a charge controller between your panels and your batter bank (MPPT controllers will give you a bit better throughput in the system). Then the batteries are before the Inverter in the power line. I am not an expert but I consider @WillProwse to know his stuff very well, and you might find better information on his channel. where do i find my ac in an ac out's?

    • @sandypawstravel
      @sandypawstravel  Рік тому +1

      If you are talking about for the model we have, the six white squares in the upper right of the hookups will be labeled on the black above it with in / out and then with the + - N to tell you which wires go where. I think it is also in the book, but if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

      The only way I would know to tell you is that I had to put the multi-meter on the wires to know which was energized coming from the source, and then that one should be your incoming. Do you have an inverter you are replacing, or are you doing one from scratch?

    Renogy deceives customers. They claim PCL able to auto switch from battery to utility but this is FALSE There is NO setpoint, not on older not on newer version, contacted Renogy about the issue, they replayed "thanks for letting us know but your unit no longer under warranty" is a SCAM, there should be class action.

    • @sandypawstravel

      I am still pretty torn. I have had my unit installed almost a year and a half now, and I am not exactly happy with it, if you read the comments, I go into it with a little more depth, but the highlights are, the internal fan failed, and no support, no pass through, it always has to be left on, and third is that it likes to give me an error when I make the switch from shore power to battery. All that said, it was cheap when I needed it to be, but I also don't think I would make the same purchase next time. Thanks for stopping in and for leaving your comment. I think it is good to have an honest forum for others to see before making the purchase themselves.
