I lived in Memphis when that happened. No one wanted to support a team that Nashville was gonna get. We tried for almost 20 years to get a team, and to host a team going to Nashville of all places was a slap in the face. One last thing, the Saints are definitely not the most popular team there.
Even if Albuquerque will never have an NFL team, I will always respect the hell out of them as a city when it comes to sports. Why??? Because they actually named their Triple-A baseball team in reference to a Simpsons episode lol
@@HomerSimpson51256 within their level of play they are but if Ohio State's best ever team could play the worst Cleveland or Cincy Team ever the pro teams would still kick the shit out of them. Gotta think that San Diego will be a prime candidate for another team given how badly the Chargers fans there got screwed. The league seems to favor making that kind of thing right by awarding new franchises.
As someone who lived there for 12 years, St. Louis doesn't care about football. They're the only city that has failed FOUR TIMES. The NFL isn't going back, and aside from a few dozen butthurts, most of the city doesn't even notice, let alone care.
St. Louis couldn't hold on to either of its previous NFL teams, plus it could've had its own expansion franchise back in 1995 (with no long-term connection to a different city), but in '93 there was infighting among potential team investors there, thus the expansion franchise was awarded to Jacksonville instead.
The Longhorns prevent Austin from having an NFL team. They control the city and dont want to give up any money spent by citizens in Austin who spend it on the longhorns to the NFL.
San Jose already has an NFL franchise. They are called the San Francisco 49ers. They play in Santa Clara, which is a suburb city immediately adjacent to San Jose...very close to downtown San Jose, in fact.
San Jose basically does have an NFL team haha. It’s just “tradition” to keep calling them the San Francisco 49ers but the San Jose airport is right by the stadium
San Antonio has tried repeatedly to get an NFL franchise. They built a dome under the “if you build it they will come” theory - didn’t work. The Saints relocated there during COVID and they tried to get them to stay - didn’t work. Red McCombs (very wealthy San Antonian) bought the Minnesota Vikings to lay the groundwork for a team in his hometown - didn’t work. I live in San Antonio and it’s weird - it’s a sports town. They support the Spurs, they host march madness tournament rounds, UTSA football and bowl games are popular. I think the league is concerned about dilution. Both the Cowboys and Texans sell a lot of merchandise here…
I too live in San Antonio. Its been a long and painful road this far getting to this point. In my opinion its our poor city planning and leadership that has cost our city an NFL team. . Not investing money decades ago into our local universities, our airport, our local businesses, and our infrastructure has caught up with us. Businesses like AT&T left SA for Dallas, young people left for better jobs and education. . However, the tide has shifted in the last decade. . UTSA and UT health are merging. Our airport is about to undergo a $2.5B renovation, multiple manufacturing and tech jobs are growing within the city. . Lastly there's discussion about PROJECT MARVEL. The construction of a new entertainment district downtown complete with a new SPURS NBA arena. . Rumor is those plans include major upgrades for the Alamodome. I pray the Alamodome does NOT get renovated. Instead SA should save money (3-5 Billion) and have the plan in place for when the next team relocation or expansion occurs. Then once a deal is made, construction begins
@@forgottenplaces9780 I don’t live in Jacksonvill, but I am from Florida. It wouldn’t make sense to add a team in San Antonio lol when another state can have one that doesn’t. Texas isn’t Florida
San Antonio will never get a team as long a Jerry Jones owns the Cowboys. He has already vetoed SA getting a team twice when owners wanted to move their teams here.
Besides Austin or San Antonio, the other likely cities for potential US based NFL franchises would be Salt Lake City, St. Louis mostly because I think the league owes them a team, and maybe Raleigh Durham If the CFL ever goes under or they finally agreed to have American NFL teams play there then Toronto would be another great candidate. People in Toronto like big-time football they don’t like the CFL
The Raleigh-Durham market is already larger than some NFL markets, but it would be a difficult sell for the NFL given that there are over 140,000 D1 college football seats in the metro among NC State, UNC, and Duke. Maybe when the Triangle reaches 3M it could happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Raleigh is too close to Charlotte and the Eastern part of North Carolina has been part of the Washington fanbase for decades. I grew up there and a ton of kids in school were diehard Washington fans.
@@karnubawax that's not the only reason but it certainly helps. Austin would be a hard sell with UT sucking up so much of the oxygen in the sports market. But a team somewhere on the North East side of San Anton would probably do well.
As a Scottish perspective, for what it matters. St Louis, Austin, San Diego and Oklahoma would be my 4 choices. However I’d like to see 8 teams, add in Toronto and another Canadian team (Montreal?) with two others in there.
Oklahoma City would actually make a great NFL city in my opinion. Even with the Oklahoma Sooners somewhat relegating OKC to "de-facto college town status" - the main campus is roughly 20 miles from the city proper - I believe that would only help grow the team's fanbase. The key is to hit the ground running in fielding a competitive team, much like the Thunder did when they came to town. Bonus points if they can sign a few ex-Sooners, or even ex-OK State Cowboys as their fanbase is substantial in their own right.
St Lo has issues with the city not wanting to get sucked into paying for another stadium. They've had two teams abandon them and screw them over and they don't seem eager to test those waters again. But ya know never known. Austin is a no go. The University of Texas football team has one of the largest fanbases in the state and their stadium is literally in downtown Austin (as is the rest of the campus). San Antonio is a better choice since it only has an NBA franchise and no college teams with enormous fanbases. It's also growing almost as fast as Austin and is only a couple of hours drive away. San Diego absolutely should get a team. It's far too large of a city not to have and NFL team, it's a favored location for hosting Super Bowls because of the warm weather in the winter and the former Charger fanbase was a good one that was loyal to a team that wasn't all that good for most of it's time in the city. Additionally the NFL has shown a pattern of getting teams back into markets that have been deserted by previous owners. OK.... well maybe... However that has always been primarily college football focused and would have some of the same issues that Austin does. And outside of the OK City and Tulsa the state is pretty empty. It's also not terribly far away from where the Kansas City Chiefs play.
@@geoffroi-le-HookThat’s the thing. It's not the size of Memphis that is a significant factor but the poverty of the population. There aren't enough people who live in Memphis who could afford a ticket to an NFL game and that's why the NFL will never put a team in Memphis.

As someone from Louisville, I pretty much agree with your assessment. I feel like we're too much of a college town to ever be serious for a professional team. That may change someday, but I can't see it happening any time soon. Also, it's not just the Cards but the Cats too. One could argue that its more so the latter.
Birmingham courted the Patriots in 1968. They knew about the Fenway Park situation and offered to build a football only stadium. Billy Sullivan held out and got Foxboro m
I think the issue with San Antonio or Austin getting an NFL team is less about the power of Jerry Jones and more about the popularity of the Cowboys in Texas. I think a lot of people that have the ability to get a team to those cities recognize it as a risky investment with how difficult it would be to break into that stronghold at a cultural level.
I live in San Antonio and i hate that we get lumped in with Austin. As if its a package deal. Either one city gets a team while the other doesn't. Or we are forced to share a team. Screw that!!! Each city should get its own team. Each city has over a million people and are each growing fast. In my opinion: 4 Texas teams is perfect and would make a killer NFL division, full of rivalries and competition.

Expansion? Really, doesn't the NFL already have perennial cellar-dwellers living solely off TV rights? Is there really a need for a further dilution of talent? How many more teams are required to keep balance in the divisions? 4? 8?
They usually add them 2 at a time. For years and years there were divisions that only had 4 teams while other divisions had 5 teams. The standard practice is to add one AFC and one NFC team at a time and they usually (but not always) stick them in the division that makes the most sense geographically. What's been the pattern is to add teams in pairs every 5-7 years until there are enough to form a new division and then reorganize the entire structure of divisions (and sometimes conferences too). In the 60s there was only an East and West division for the NFL and the AFL. Then they added a Central division for both conferences in the 70s. Then in the early 2000s they went to the now current system with an East West North and South division. As to why they want to add more teams obviously so they can make more money. When they hit a certain number of additional teams they will reorganize the playoffs to add more playoff games as well which makes even more money. So far as diluting talent level goes. Well there are 128 FCS teams in the country with an even greater number of FBS teams out there. With over 300 teams to potentially farm talent from I don't think they are going to lower the quality of the product too much by adding more teams any time soon.
Sacramento will never get an NFL team even though it's the 20th largest TV market. It's too close to San Francisco... Not as close as San Jose, but still just 90 miles away from SF. Sac has a huge Niners and legacy Raiders fanbase anyway.

Plus, the Browns haven’t exactly done enough to keep my fanbase for as long as they have. It’s a very toxic relationship.
Memphis was one of the few USFL teams that drew well and were embraced by their city in the mid 1980s. I think Memphis absolutely could support it's own NFL franchise. They only didn't support the Oilers because it was already known that it was Nashville's team.
Any city that would cough up $3 -$5 billion for a new stadium and facilities can snare an NFL team. I’d say Oklahoma City, San Antonio, San Diego, and Portland would be the most likely possible places for the NFL to get an expansion. I can honestly say most people in Memphis do not care about the Titans, or any Nashville based sports team. If Memphis for whatever reason (it would never happen) got an NFL team it would have no problem drawing news fans here seeing as the two cities absolutely hate each other. Not to mention you have several major corporations based in Memphis so it would be too crazy for someone in Memphis to buy and finance an NFL team if Nashville never had a team.

1) Agree on San Jose, legally San Jose can't in that aspect 2) Albuqurque just sounds like a stupid city to put a team...that's a given. Plus it's a college town 3) I may have to respectfully disagree on Memphis, I think they'd test the waters on an NFL team...and if Roger Goodell wants it, the Titans will change their name to Nashville (And the only reason it failed in the late-90's is because the Liberty Bowl is a dump) 4) Louisville is a college town...I don't think "team loyalties" is a valid reason. A new fresh NFL team in your city would totally change that 5) Ohio isn't a big enough state to house 3 NFL teams...but Columbus is a solid sports city San Antonio needs a better building than the Alamo Dome. Austin is Longhorns country...no NFL team is needed there.
@4:50 Memphis indeed probably would never get a NFL team but it should be noted that FedEx's Fred Smith and his family (including son Arthur, former Falcons head coach and current Steelers OC) is likely on the shortlist of potential NFL team owners whenever another team does come up for sale
It’s very unlikely the NFL will expand. It already has 32 teams, with 8 divisions of 4 teams each. Any expansion will result in uneven division sizes, that the league finally fixed with the last expansion. If San Antonio gets a franchise, it will most likely be likely be a move from somewhere else.
Memphis was on the running for awhile. I remember in the early 90's the finalists were Memphis, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Baltimore. Always felt bad they got left out. Would have really helped the city i believe.
Dude if we got a team besides Nashville it would have been so great, we more than likely would have still got an NBA team and having both the NFL and NBA here when our population was larger than Nashville would definitely helped out our city.
I can't believe there's folks that still believe St.Louis should or will get another NFL team. SMH. The NFL got exactly what they wanted by moving the Rams back to LA into the new corporate headquarters stadium, increasing the value of the team, meanwhile expanding the fan base of the Chiefs to the whole state of Missouri including the St. Louis metro area. The St.Louis department stores all sell Chiefs apparel and memorabilia while the folks buy and wear it all over town. The local network sports coverage always includes the Chiefs the same way they always did the Rams and the Big Red. Chief signs and logos are displayed everywhere. The city now has the Battlehawks who play at the dome where the Rams played. And the city also settled themselves with a major league soccer team. Built a new stadium for that. Nah, St. Louis has been turned into Chiefs nation, and most of the NFL fan base there have fallen for it.

But there are other cities more deserving of one than ABQ.
Probably right. It's considered Broncos' country, which is laughable since I see far more Cowboys, Seahawks, 49ers, Raiders, and even Steelers paraphernalia than Broncos here. SLC would draw in Utah County (Provo/Orem and Lehi) about 45 minutes away, as well as Bountiful and even the Ogden area. Some of those are growing areas. Still, though, that covers 2 significant college fanbases (BYU and Utah), has many fans of other teams and the problems that can come with both of those situations.
Kinda surprised to not see Honolulu on this list. Relatively big pop (1M) and the NFL has history here, but I give zero chance we ever sniff a franchise.

I dont think they have a say lol, plus theres plenty of people moving there that arent longhorn fans anyway

@forgottenplaces9780 dude then your a fool. Yes we all know they don't have a veto but to basically try and ignore UT is a fools errand.
It's more like down the street and across the freeway. But Great America is across the street!

Saints played a few of their games in San Antonio after Katrina. They did not leave New Orleans during Covid.
Besides Austin or San Antonio, the other likely cities for potential US based NFL franchises would be Salt Lake City, St. Louis mostly because I think the league owes them a team, and maybe Raleigh Durham
If the CFL ever goes under or they finally agreed to have American NFL teams play there then Toronto would be another great candidate.
@@johnlabus7359 The only reason San Antonia is a good pick is because it doesn't have a huge college base.
I did forget about San Diego. They probably will get a team to in the near future. Portland, Oregon is another candidate.
The CFL would never allow a full-time Canadian NFL team. It would be like having an English Premier League team in Edinburgh or Aberdeen.
They want to put a team in London but I don't think that would work because of distance and time zones.
@@geoffroi-le-HookThat’s the thing. The English Premier League has had and the English Football League has teams in Wales (Cardiff, Swansea & Wrexham) and the Scottish Professional Football League has English teams play there, Gretna and long time member in Berwick.

I agree about the talent situation. Especially at certain positions. Plus each team plays six games in their own division.

2) Albuqurque just sounds like a stupid city to put a team...that's a given. Plus it's a college town
3) I may have to respectfully disagree on Memphis, I think they'd test the waters on an NFL team...and if Roger Goodell wants it, the Titans will change their name to Nashville (And the only reason it failed in the late-90's is because the Liberty Bowl is a dump)
4) Louisville is a college town...I don't think "team loyalties" is a valid reason. A new fresh NFL team in your city would totally change that
5) Ohio isn't a big enough state to house 3 NFL teams...but Columbus is a solid sports city
San Antonio needs a better building than the Alamo Dome.

I was thinking of putting st louis on here but I wanted to focus on cities that have never had a team
Yea I was aware of that. I applied my comment after reading many here that were bringing up St. Louis. I agree with your analysis on the cities you mentioned.
@@TS-wh4ey great comment, never knew
Of all u wrote. Just like I read a comment, sayin Portland needs a team. Pretty sure it’s the same
Situation ..Portland residents support the Seahawks

The driving distance between Portland and Seattle is just shy of three hours. The driving distance between KC and St. Louis is almost four hours. Not that it makes a big difference, but I can't imagine the NFL awarding a franchise to Portland when they were perfectly satisfied with moving the Rams out of St. Louis, forcing the Chiefs onto the abandoned fan base, from a city four hours away on the other side of the state. IMO
Liar! The stupid chiefs are hated in St Louis because they voted for the cards and rams to leave
Everything you said we already knew since .....I can't even remember.
San Jose HAS a team, San Fransisco does not have a team. the way you present this is just nonsense.
Columbus has a pro football team - the OSU Buckeyes! St. Louis is another city that will NOT have an NFL team because the NFL left a sour taste in their mouth the last time.
Part of the reason that the A's couldn't move South closer to San Jose was because the Giants already claimed San Jose as their market territory based on an old agreement within MLB. I don't think the same agreement would apply to NFL.
Surprised Albuquerque was mentioned. As a resident the thought of an NFL team here never really crossed my mind because of the reasons you’ve stated. I could see possibly an NBA team similar to the Thunder. Basketball is the most popular sport amongst young people here and our two D1 schools have had more success in basketball than any other sport. But there are other cities more deserving of one than ABQ.
The problem with Austin and San Antonio is the same problem that Columbus has... two NFL teams already split whatever fan base you'd get
Salt Lake City will never get an NFL team either
Probably right. It's considered Broncos' country, which is laughable since I see far more Cowboys, Seahawks, 49ers, Raiders, and even Steelers paraphernalia than Broncos here. SLC would draw in Utah County (Provo/Orem and Lehi) about 45 minutes away, as well as Bountiful and even the Ogden area. Some of those are growing areas. Still, though, that covers 2 significant college fanbases (BYU and Utah), has many fans of other teams and the problems that can come with both of those situations.
Will New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, or Washington DC get a team on their soil.
Kinda surprised to not see Honolulu on this list. Relatively big pop (1M) and the NFL has history here, but I give zero chance we ever sniff a franchise.
Never say never, I mean HS football is HUGE on O'ahu. Ticket prices would have to be astronomical though to cover all the travel expenses.
An NFL team in Honolulu would have many of the same logistical issues that is also affect London. Besides, Aloha Stadium, a technological marvel when it opened in the mid 70s, is now condemned.
When is the State of New Jersey getting their own NFL football 🏈 team??? ☹️
Just remember this, folks. ☝️ There is only ONE NFL football 🏈 team in the State of New York. The Buffalo Bills 🦬 (Village of Orchard Park, Erie County, New York). 😃👍
YEAH RIGHT! I'll take the Jets or giants over Your heard of buffaloes any day.
7:49-8:15 Do you wanna bet? Jerry Jones has more power than you think. Plus he has more connections and influence on other NFL Owners.
We don’t need any more NFL teams. I’m pretty sure that every city that can support an NFL franchise already has one.
Birmingham has always been considered for an NFL team, but they now have a professional team in the Birmingham Stallions which has won 3 straight USFL Championships.
San Jose is only 5 miles from Santa Clara, so that would never happen. No Oakland Raiders, but we have a wonderful city here in Sacramento. I think we could support an NFL team.
I live in SoCal and I think that The Chargers should & might move back to San Diego. Investors ought to buy them.
I've heard people say "Milwaukee" ...I just shake my head
San Francisco native 🌉 here.
1:40 "...still root for the Raiders...." No! When Al moved then to LA, my Fandom went bye 👋 bye 👋. Meanwhile, the 49ers arose under the late Bill Walsh. Thus, many ex Oakland fans jumped ship 🚢.
Any city in Canada 🇨🇦 is subject not to have an NFL team: the CFL exists.
I was in Downtown San Jose one Saturday night back in 1986, and I could have laid down and gone to sleep in the middle of the street. There was nothing, and I mean NOTHING even moving there. Now, I know things have changed since then with Silicon Valley, etc., but that was downright creepy. So I agree, no NFL in San Jose, for sure.
St. Louis will never get one again.
They don't deserve one. Aside from a few dozen butthurts, most of the city didn't even notice when the rams left.
@deansch6089 why would they want another NFL team after the Rams screwed over the St Louis taxpayers?
