This is hands down the best tip EVER on UA-cam!! Thank you Tom! As I already mentioned in other comments since I follow your channel and Golf Tips my HCP dropped a lot and this tip is just the best I have seen for like ages. This is the motion which was missing in my swing. I always started my downsing with Hip Rotation and got stuck or oversliced in my miss. I did your movement (push your left pocket forward and turn your hips after that) every day for like 5 to 10 min for one week at home. First it feels super strange but after 2 or 3 times trying it you can just feel that it is a complete GAME CHANGER!! It is so much more effortless and much more power. I went on the course one week later and in the warm up I could already feel a massive difference in ball flight and power. Really nice straight flight or little baby draw. superb. Driver and Hybrid were much more controlled and I crushed my irons! it felt like pure butter. Went out on the course and shot a 77 (I am a HCP 10.8) and I could not be happier! thanks Mr Saguto for your great videos!
That is *AWESOME,* @stephprime!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you. You absolutely went about it the proper way in terms of methodically ingraining this previously foreign concept until it wasn't foreign anymore!! Congrats on your great round, and keep up the excellent work!! Thanks for sharing! Tom
Man! I recorded myself at the range and noticed that my hips were moving early. I was trying to work on compressing the golf ball and pushing my left hip back on the downswing. I was really struggling with hitting it fat. Then I found this video. CHANGED MY GOLF GAME. Just focusing on bumping my hips to the target on the downsing instead of trying to rotate them, completely changed my striking. I am now compressing the ball and taking a divot after the ball. It is such an addicting feeling. Thank you so much. My drives have improved too. I'm hitting nice draws. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar!

This is one of the best tips ever. This is the missing link to my golf swing. Thanks Tom. If ever in Tom's neck of the woods. Get a golf lesson from him. He's one of the best teachers in the world.
Thank you, Richard - I sincerely appreciate your very kind words and support, and I'm so glad to know that my instruction continues to resonate well with you!! Have a Happy and Blessed New Year!! Tom
My pleasure - I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you! Yes - the hips will open/rotate; the key is in making sure they don't do so prematurely, causing the spinout and throwing the club out and across the line. TS
Welcome to the wonderful world of crispy compression!! It is indeed a wonderful thing to see - and hear - the ball rocketing towards the target with seemingly minimal effort, right?? I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. Great video as usual!!! It reminds me of how my dad used to tell me “make your back elbow nudge the hips forward so it can in front of you and not stuck behind you.”
Thanks Matthew - I'm glad you enjoyed it! Seems like your dad may have liked this episode on Mr. Hogan's "Magic Elbow"?: ua-cam.com/video/iL9WmQ7KsmE/v-deo.html Have fun out there!! TS
Your sessions ALWAYS have clarity. The face on view helps me see the intention and that's what I take away. You do a great job of keeping your head back as the hips move toward target. Be good -Russ
Thanks Russ - I'm glad to know that the downswing hip lessons I referenced in yesterday's reply are resonating with you! By the way, make sure you check out the Community page in the online school. Plenty of great swing dialog and engagement going on there. Tom
Your responses are always helpfull and much appreciated. When I really get my act together I'm going to visit you at Litchfield Plantation. Only two plus hrs away in Sanford NC and if memory serves me well I think I've stayed there in the past on golf junkets. Be well.-Russ

Best video addressing this issue I've watched by far! I've tried mamy different approaches and had some success but never found the consistency I wanted. This truly helped my swing. Thanks so much

Hands Quiet and Hips Quiet are two of your best tips. One of the biggest faults of Hogan"s Five lessons is where he states in lesson 4 that the downswing is initiated by the turning of the hips. Thank you for this great video.
Thanks - I'm glad those concepts are resonating with you! There's a lot of great information in Mr. Hogan's "Five Lessons" book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered. Tom
Tom, Thank you very much for this tips/drill. You made me realize why I keep swinging out to in. Your instructions/tutorials are so easy to follow and you've made learning and playing golf a lot of fun again. I'm excited to practice and perfect this move.

Tried it Tom ...and it works 👍just had new hip so it's helping to protect that as well , never ever heard any pro instructor say hips in the "library" You are the "BEST" no nonsense instructor on you tube , frmgers crossed that my golf swing continues to improve cos of this fantastic tip , thanks very very much 🏌️♀️
I'm glad to know that this lesson video helped you to enjoy some crispy, body-friendly ball striking, Malcolm. Nice job incorporating it into your swing!! A significant percentage of my students and online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? Thank you. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong with my driver swing. You and Ben Hogan changed my swing a few years ago but glad you now emphasized the shifting of the hip to correct my error. 😊
I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated well with you, Louise. Premature hip rotation is a very common affliction in the amateur golfing world, causing steep, over-the-top paths, poor contact, and inconsistent ball flight. Nice job figuring this out and incorporating the correct motion into your swing!! Thanks for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work!! Tom
Great video. Luscak and Malaska talk about this. The "open hips" done well is a result, not an active move. It comes from squaring the club with your shoulders and having a good follow through or release.
Exactly! (Although sadly so many amateurs erroneously spin their hips out prematurely, misguidedly believing that that is how they need to initiate the downswing.) By the way, in case you haven't already watched it, here's a recent episode on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/v-deo.html Thanks for your comment! Tom
I took 40 lessons and my instructor (PGA certified instructor) never mentioned moving the hips toward the target. He talked about swinging in to out and talked about wrist bends a ton but by leaving this part out, he made my swing harder! I've always been trying to do some magician move where I'm turning my hips, yet still coming from in to out. It's impossible and now I know why!!! LOL. I can't wait to try this. This is what I've been missing out on or it's at least one huge missing link to my swing that I've been missing out on. So glad I came across this video.
Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎 I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you. Be patient with yourself as you build it into your swing as it sounds as though you've ingrained that premature rotational move. Put in the proper work and you'll start to see results sooner rather than later. And if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform, please consider my online school. @@agroblueberries unfortunately, I did not. This past year I had 2 surgeries I had to go through on my bicep tendons, first one arm, then the other! So, that pretty much ruined golf for the year for me. But I will try it this year. I should be good to go in May. My most recent surgery was August 3rd of last year so I'll be good to go soon!
Totally nailed my problem and many others ..by mistake first thinking of turning the hips first which then will make you come over the top, weight is not forward and hitting fat/flipping club in turn raising the back angle too soon at impact. So keeping the hips quiet but first shifting hips to the left, now club is lined right, turning upper body now hips, hands in front at impact without raising your back angle and not hitting fat or flipping the club.....Great video, thx !!
Awesome!! I'm glad this lesson resonated with you. Nice job incorporating this into your swing and eliminating that steep downswing move!! Keep up the great work and have fun out there! Tom
My pleasure, Steven - I'm very glad to know that this lesson aided in your understanding, and now that you are armed with this knowledge I hope you are able to use it to the betterment of your game. Thanks for your message and support! Tom
This is the best tip (for me) that I ever had. I always started my downswing with my hips as the trigger instead of the lateral push hip (left pocket) toward target. Thank you!
Awesome - I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you, Jeff! An early spin out of the hips is a common cause of a poor downswing path. Execute this trigger move correctly and it should have your club approaching the ball nicely on an in to out track. Tom
Thanks for the video. I was alway frustrated with the traditional golf lessons. I used to be able to hit the ball very well in my youth but grew a lot and clubs no longer fit. I developed a bad over the top swing that I could not fix. I could never swing freely with traditional instruction when I tried to learn golf again. I was ignorant of the stack and tilt method and thought it was another gimmick until I saw some good UA-camrs speak positively about it. I tried some of the techniques and suddenly began to swing easier and striking the ball much more solid. No more overly complicated swing with wrist twisting to keep the club face closed. I’m looking forward to hitting fewer bad shots and better longer shots.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Joe! I appreciate that, Sanjay! To be clear, golf is not simple. But if we can simplify the swing so as not to rely on timing and/or exceptional hand-eye coordination, then we can achieve consistently great results without having to continuously work so hard. By the way, have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! Thanks for clearing the hip movement during the Downswing... BTW, after watching one of your previous videos, where you explain the importance of the golf grip. I ended up buy a medium and large Jumbo grip, and the medium is perfect... I just ordered the entire set for all my clubs. MY BROTHER, YOU ARE AN AMAZING INSTRUCTOR!!!!!

this is gold!!! can you over do the push of the hips to the target though?? It seems to make me move my head to the target also unless I crunch my right side hard.. It so nice to have an instructor who truly cares about their students getting better..
As mentioned in a previous response, if your path is already sufficiently in-to-out then overemphasizing this lateral hip slide could lead to big pushes/blocks and overdraws. Yes - keeping our head in the "box" preestablished at address is a key element for keeping us centered through the entire swing motion, and in doing so the proper downswing action will result in some measure of trail side tilt. Tom
Before watching this video, I’ve had severe duck hooks for at least 2 months with no success of fixing after countless videos. After this video, and implementing the things in my next range session, pushing my hips towards the target first and longer fixed the duck hooks and now I love golf again. Thank you SagutoGolf
Fantastic! I'm very glad to know that this lesson helped you overcome your hooking issue and rekindle your love affair with this great game. Thanks for sharing your success and keep up the great work!! Tom
When I first used your swing on the course I was pushing a lot to the right. I realized that I was NOT letting my hips release at the end (probably due to tension/anxiety). Figured that out about 1/2 way through and then I was whacking some beautiful shots straight down the pipe. My point is, people also need to be aware that if you are pushing your shots it COULD be that you are tense and not letting your hips release SOON ENOUGH after starting out moving your hips to the target. Best golf instructor on the internet!
Fabulous job figuring it out, Jeff!! Yes - once we have ingrained the proper motions and are able to trust the motion, we then just have to let if go. I call it "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Thanks for your kind words and for sharing your experience, and keep up the great work!! Tom
I've been fighting a cut for a while and seen like 1000000000 tips on videos This video is just perfect and shows why I was cutting the call (early hip turn) and the solution (hip movement) love it!!!!
Awesome!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson finally helped you to resolve your ball flight issue!! Now, stop overloading yourself with 1000000000 other tips and just park yourself here... 😎 Tom

Tom, I spent $1,000 at GolfTec to mixed results. Great instructor, cool gear, but too many complicated pointers. I started watching your videos and implementing the grip, swing, and free tips from UA-cam. It's been a COMPLETE gamechanger. Literally, I'm not stressing about every little thing in my swing. And playing much more consistently. I'm still new to golf, so it's hard to see it in my handicap but golf is so much more fun now and I'm clearly playing better. I now have a routine when I go to the range and practice. WHY DON'T TEACHERS TEACH THIS LIKE YOU? JEEEZ. I'm joining Saguto Golf today. See you inside. Edit: I joined.
Welcome aboard, Reed - I'm very glad to have you in the school!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start on your journey to the Land of Ball Striking Bliss: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I monitor the forum regularly and participate in the discussions, including assisting with swing-related inquiries. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to hearing from you regularly in the Forum and to assisting you in building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Again nice job explaining how to move the hips properly. This was my biggest issue which was the main reason for swinging over the top and feeling stuck
Thanks Tom. I was working on this about 3 weeks ago. Feel vs real to me almost feels like I'm all arms...but on video, the timing of the hips is perfect.
Hi Tom I think the rolling my right foot over and keeping my hips quiet has just finished my golf swing off I've at last got a golf swing that seems to suit me and really very much less complicated that I've had in the past. This is a Great video... I enjoy watching all your videos. I went to the driving range today and worked on what your teaching and I'm hitting the ball first then making the divot. I really enjoy Golf and my low score is 68
Wow - that's some fantastic playing!! Thanks so much for your kind words regarding my instruction - I'm very glad to know that the lessons are helping your ball striking. Keep up the great work!! Tom
Yesterday I was spinning my hips out, especially off the tee with the long clubs. I remembered a drill of keeping the rear foot grounded until after impact. I notice that you do that when you hit balls. Needless to say, my ballstriking improved 100%! I started striping it on the back 9! Unfortunately the greens had been aerated recently so putting was impossible. The greens were so slow and bumpy. The ball hopped a lot. Great video Tom! My swing is improving every day.

@@SagutoGolf Tom, I’m working the Korn Ferry tournament at the Glen Club outside Chicago (the NV5 Invitational; a Marshall), and all I’m doing is watching the players LEFT HIP (thanks to you). 😏 You’re absolutely right.☝🏻 They lean into that left side and DON’T ROTATE until well into the downswing. #BestTipEver 👍🏻
It'd probably be more enjoyable to watch at an LPGA event - 😆 - but nonetheless I'm glad you were able to confirm that the top players do this!! (And you can too!) Have fun at the tournament!!
Thanks Tom. I feel as though my left shoulder moves down and towards my right knee on the back swing. And then I don't even have to think after that. The weight shift, then clearing of the hips has helped me fix my over the top move.
Ur recent focus on Hogan has caused me to finally subscribe to your channel. Lag shot looks awesome but maybe not so good for low handicap (7) flippers. Your swing and enthusiasm are really great!
I appreciate your subscription, @raydog! As for the LagShot, I think it's a fantastic training aid. Great video - not sure why countless video can never deliver this type of information. For some like me, this helps visualize the swing which is the only way to learn it and correct terrible habits to improve.
I just played my first round and shot 12 under my hcp just after about 10 practices concentrating on weight on left foot and left knee bent. Finally something on UA-cam what actually worked for me! Thanks a lot!!!

Love your videos, trying to simplify things. Keep it up. One thing - I’ve always heard about the “hip bump,” but it never made much sense. It seems like it’s a secondary effect to either (1) shifting weight of lower body forward from back foot to front foot (though I know u recommend having weight on front leg primarily throughout swing) or (2) pushing off ground w left foot). I’m a bit confused. If u have time, please clarify. Thx so much!
I'm glad you're enjoying my content! You start with your weight forward (55/45 for the short and mid irons; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. This enables the golfer to "clear" while keeping the club moving on the proper in-to-out path. There's no shifting back and forth, and the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. OMG!!! This is why I've been hitting right, thanks Tom👍 my hips gave been firing to soon causing that over the top cut. Knowing this gives me so much more insight, now I know if I fire my hips first, I can cut the ball. Nice
Yep....don't rush the down swing....when you move that hip toward the target as he shows in this video the arms will drop then you turn. Stay loose....no tension...this video is great.

Your videos on wrist loading and unloading and having a short backswing changed my game immensely. I looked in the mirror and when i replicated the swing just to keep club face down and load my wrists - my swing was exactly like your teach and the funny thing is i realised that i had rotated my shoulder to tilt even though it did not feel like it at all. I was annoyed with myself as i realised i kept on over turning my body and lifting the club too high and my shot was going everywhere. So i took it to the golf course and i instantly got good results. Now there is an issue where i sometimes put the ball too far forward and the ball goes left to right but a 7 iron goes left to right 150 to 160 yards - so it is something i can work on. Also i never get a draw and the best strikes just go straight. But coming along.
I am very glad to know that you are benefiting from my lesson videos, @Karamjit Dedyal!! Thank you for sharing your progress, and keep up the great work!! Tom

Great video as always! You video clarified the correct move of a “hip push” toward the target while keeping the head behind the ball. I’ve struggled with a “hip slide” which moves my entire left side forward, including my head. Not good! You’ve explained and simplified the correct move Tom! Thank you!
Indeed, Bob - If your upper torso (and head) move forward prematurely in the downswing then the path will be rerouted across the ball, causing less-than-desirable results and a significant loss of power/distance. The technical term is "disassociation", meaning that the lower body moves laterally towards the target while the upper body - and therefore your swing center - remain in place. That's the formula for maintaining the proper downswing path and experiencing consistently crispy contact. The upper body then releases naturally post-impact into the finish. I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you! Tom! Although I viewed this video when it was first presented, I came back to it today. Why? Because I was not happy with my downswiing yesterday. After again re- viewing this video, I took up a club and tried this (push the hips toward the target) move. Yesterday, I don't think I was consistent with this move and the rotate the hips move would occur. What happened was a pulled shot with the ball going left into the bunker. Hopefully, using this move consistently will eliminate this challenge!
Yes - get consistent with this move, John, and you will definitely be shallowing the shaft. Also along these lines, I highly recommend that you consider the LagShot training aid that you've perhaps seen me use in some recent channel videos as this will greatly assist you in ingraining the proper motions and downswing path. That lateral hip slide should continue to impact in order to prevent the hip rotation from taking over and rerouting the path across the ball. Thanks Tom love your one piece take away it is to my mind a very similar action to an ice hockey slap shot with very few moving parts therefore less to go wrong , a very solid down the line action , love it.
Glad you enjoyed it, John! Yes - I've referred to the slap shot motion in previous lessons; it sure does provide a great imagery for the golf downswing. Thanks! Tom

Good video. This is what I teach. Lateral, then rotational then vertical. It’s a sequence like a booster rocket. If you skip the first booster you can never get it back. It’s gone. Leaned that from a guy that works for a pressure plate company and Malaska. Good stuff
I appreciate that, Derrick!! Yes - far too many amateur golfers fire the rotational prematurely and as a result doom their downswing at the onset. The lateral keeps the rotational at bay until just the right moment. Tom
@@SagutoGolf well I tried it today. Must say I was smacking them pretty good. I’m about a 7 hdi. Tomorrow I’m playing so I will use it. Feels stronger and more natural to be honest
What a strange and beautiful creature this man is. You remind me of Glenn from the wedding singer for some reason. In all serious this is great. I’ve always felt best when trying to fire through impact but always heard info saying hips start the downswing by firing. The explanations created great feels. Thanks! Subscribed.
I'm very glad to know that you are enjoying my content! My expertise is in the golf instruction realm. There are others within the physical training profession who are far more qualified to handle your inquiry, and I defer to them. Having said that, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. And here's a link to my free mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/ You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought. Thanks! Tom
I was just trying to put my weight on my left foot and then I'd spin my hips too early. I can see that concentrating on my left pocket going to the target longer, can help with the early spin out. I practiced it indoors, felt good, and I'll take it to the driving range. Thanks.
I hope it performs well for you, Frieda. One of the keys is to prevent your upper torso and head (and swing center) from moving forward during the downswing as you gradually load more weight into the lead leg. If the swing is properly executed, your weight should be 70% forward at the top, 80% halfway down, and 90% at impact, all without any forward movement of the upper torso. Do this and the club will approach the ball powerfully on a shallowed path. Conversely, if we allow the upper body to release forward prematurely the downswing path will be rerouted across the ball and most of our stored up energy will be lost. Have fun out there!! Tom
Love this. Couple questions…do you feel like you are pushing towards the target by pushing off the inside of the right foot? And how far do you feel like that left hip is moving towards the target? 8-10 inches or so before you fire the hip?
Glad you enjoyed this lesson! The episode from the previous week speaks specifically to the trail foot action. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/xQAY78M7hMs/v-deo.html I don't really feel like I'm pushing off with the trail foot because that would require transferring pressure into the trail side at the transition, potentially causing a backwards shift in my swing center and low point. Rolling the trail foot inward simply triggers the lateral hip slide, combats a premature rotation, and gets the weight moving even more forward. I don't think about how far the hips move towards the target. The key is to feel that they are moving laterally through impact. The "firing" - or rotation - should then happen on autopilot. Here are some lesson videos that should supplement this one quite well: - ua-cam.com/video/GYRCd7WMoSI/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/x1IudE_9e5g/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/FmdHyl6OBIs/v-deo.html And here's a link to my free mini-course if you'd like to learn about this swing in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom
I love the way that Tom correctly debunks all the old ideas that traditional coaching has always taught, or at least implied. How to create the mystical lag effect is a great puzzle to most amateur golfers. For those who have seen this video, puzzle no more...
Unfortunately, @Felipe_uk, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎 Thanks for your kind words, and right you are - the "lag puzzle" is solved! TS
What did he debunk? Some lateral shift to the lead side with properly timed rotation is *exactly in line with conventional instruction.* Once you realize he actually wants the hips to turn, just a proper turn (like any instructor), it's clearly not at all bucking tradition, but just a questionable explanation. Sliding, without a full turn, or a late turn, is also a common fault. This makes the clickbait thumbnail/title misleading and potentially detrimental to many. Also, nothing here remotely "solves" the lag puzzle. Proper sequencing is certainly a piece of it, but this video only slightly addresses sequencing, thus it would be very generous to even make that association, let alone claim a solution is given.
@@GP-qz6kk I would dispute that what was explained was "in line with conventional instruction". I have heard quite a few coaches (face-to-face and on UA-cam) state/imply that "you can't TURN your hips too quickly once at the top of the backswing". Hips first, shoulders follow etc. This gets amateurs (especially seniors) into a lot of trouble IMO as there is "too much going on" (in the downswing) for them to square the clubface at impact. This can easily lead to a rushing of the downswing, which is fatal - as illustrated by the dozens of TY videos on the subject. As Tom explained, the correct thing to do is to keep the hips relatively 'quiet' during transition and only "fire" the hips at the "last moment" (i.e. when the club is about parallel). I found this out for myself by trial and error (over many years!) and have not previously seen it explained as well as Tom did. My own experience is that a relatively short backswing also helps, accompanied by a focus on the follow-through.
@@felipe_uk2840 I have never heard a single person teach that. I have heard that the downswing starts with the lower body, which is correct, but does need explanation. I realize that could be misinterpreted without proper explanation, but, if that is the specific audience you're targeting, emphasize that context, and avoid the completely incorrect "don't turn" that will be even more likely misinterpreted. How is kind of seeming to instruct a slide any better? Even the people with the fault being targeted may just trade 1 fault for another. If you actually heard someone teach that, I would just make 2 points: 1. You can find bad advice about anything, but that is hardly "traditional instruction." 2. Maybe they were just doing the flip side of what was done here: they were exaggerating for people that don't use the lower body and didn't explain that. Or, intentionally trying to spin something as unconventional as a marketing strategy. If so, that should be pointed out for viewers benefit as well, and then move on to better instruction. Maybe you're thinking of lessons from back in the day. With the tech now (high speed cameras, launch monitors, ground force plates, and 3d computer modeling of the biomechanics), the mainstream instruction is pretty consistent and knowledgeable. Anyways, nice that it helped you. I hope I'm overestimating the potential detriment.
Sure - that's a workable feel, Ron, if it helps you to get your downswing properly sequenced. Here's another that may help in this regard: ua-cam.com/video/GYRCd7WMoSI/v-deo.html TS
More than a year to fix over the top (everyone said to start downswing with lower body that cause more problem by the hip turn), this vid fix my over the top in 5 mins and able to shallow the club 😊

Hello Tom. Another great video. I personally let my lead (left)shoulder start my backswing and my lead (left)shoulder start the downswing .That move seems to automatically cause my left hip to move forward toward the target. In looking at your swing, that seems to be the same movement that I feel. Am I correct with this appraisal? I really enjoy your lessons and videos!--- Doug
I'm glad you're enjoying my content, Doug! My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. Beyond that, they have a nasty habit of changing regularly. 😆 This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. This is related to another video, the elephant 🐘 trunk analogy to the body turn is a great feel for the backswing i feel connected and then left pocket to the target!! You are my golf coach Saguto!!!
Tom, good stuff as always. I particularly like your non-condescending instruction approach. I have been working on this move for some time and when I get the timing right it works like I know what I’m doing. The struggle is on the backswing where I have been told I am over-turning my right hip ( right-handed). Are you consciously not trying to turn back into your glute or are you trying to make a hip turn? I am interpreting your instruction as you are not even thinking about turning back and letting it happen naturally. Keeping quiet. Thanks.
I appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction style! In this swing system our setup - which includes flaring both feet and knees outward - facilitates a free flowing 45 degrees of tilted hip turn. We then only need an additional 45 degrees of shoulder turn to get to a full 90 degrees. So in answer to your questions, I am simply allowing my setup - along with the gradually increasing weight load into the lead leg as the trail leg straightens - to dictate the length of my backswing. Have you considered joining the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? Every time I started hitting poor iron shots I suspected I was "spinning out". I attributed it to a weak left side that collapsed. But I now realize it was more than that. It was literally spinning too much too soon. Thank you Tom!

Still working on this hip movement . I believe that the hip slide must be straight or slightly right of target line . If hips slide left ( or open ) too soon I tend to cut across the ball . Is this a valid assumption ? Thanks for answering my last question .

Tom, your formula for instruction:: Teaching the core concept and golf move immediately! Then spend the other 8 minutes reinforcing, give a drill, demonstrate. So so many teachers would benefit from using this method. They spend 8 minutes building up to something that the audience is guessing at then last 2 minutes teaching the core concept. Keep up the good work!

Hey Tom , like this vid I was trying before I saw your vid to drop on the down swing and move my left hip out of the way around to the left to much to think about I think you have to have great timing I was pushing a lot of shots I believe with your vid it makes it more simple what is your suggestion thanks 👍
One great thing about this swing system, Rick, is that it does not rely on timing. This makes it very low-maintenance once we have the motions properly ingrained. Having said that, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. I will try this. I’m keeping my right arm glued to my side which does help my slice but all my irons are going the same distance. Nowhere Only club I can hit with some consistency is my driver. But I can only hit it about 190 to 200 tops. I’m on my 17 th bucket of balls in 3 days. I will not go play any rounds till I can learn to hit. Keep the great videos coming they are very entertaining and informative. it’s my fault that this game does not like me.

@SagutoGolf thanks so much really enjoying your videos

Exactly! (Although sadly so many amateurs erroneously spin their hips out prematurely, misguidedly believing that that is how they need to initiate the downswing.)
By the way, in case you haven't already watched it, here's a recent episode on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/v-deo.html

Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎
I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you. Be patient with yourself as you build it into your swing as it sounds as though you've ingrained that premature rotational move. Put in the proper work and you'll start to see results sooner rather than later.

@@scoolzdevries did you try this and did it work?
@@agroblueberries unfortunately, I did not. This past year I had 2 surgeries I had to go through on my bicep tendons, first one arm, then the other! So, that pretty much ruined golf for the year for me. But I will try it this year. I should be good to go in May. My most recent surgery was August 3rd of last year so I'll be good to go soon!
@@scoolzdevries oof, that’s tough to hear! Hope you end up feeling better soon and can get back to enjoying the game of golf!

Excellent video. You make golf look so simple and logical.
I appreciate that, Sanjay! To be clear, golf is not simple. But if we can simplify the swing so as not to rely on timing and/or exceptional hand-eye coordination, then we can achieve consistently great results without having to continuously work so hard.

this is gold!!! can you over do the push of the hips to the target though??

Tom,
I spent $1,000 at GolfTec to mixed results.
Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start on your journey to the Land of Ball Striking Bliss:
1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered.
You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf
4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with your fellow members.

Here are a couple of other channel videos on this topic:

Thanks Tom love your one piece take away it is to my mind a very similar action to an ice hockey slap shot with very few moving parts therefore less to go wrong , a very solid down the line action , love it.

Tom, I am 65. Any physical/workout exercises you can recommend to take advantage of your excellent instruction? Thanks
You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.
Thanks!
Tom
Thanks for the golf tip Jewie newtron
Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/xQAY78M7hMs/v-deo.html
I don't really feel like I'm pushing off with the trail foot because that would require transferring pressure into the trail side at the transition, potentially causing a backwards shift in my swing center and low point.
Here are some lesson videos that should supplement this one quite well:
- ua-cam.com/video/GYRCd7WMoSI/v-deo.html

I love the way that Tom correctly debunks all the old ideas that traditional coaching has always taught, or at least implied. How to create the mystical lag effect is a great puzzle to most amateur golfers. For those who have seen this video, puzzle no more...
Unfortunately, @Felipe_uk, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎
Thanks for your kind words, and right you are - the "lag puzzle" is solved!
TS
What did he debunk? Some lateral shift to the lead side with properly timed rotation is *exactly in line with conventional instruction.*
Once you realize he actually wants the hips to turn, just a proper turn (like any instructor), it's clearly not at all bucking tradition, but just a questionable explanation.
This guy is so funny and has helped my game a lot many tips

Very good. Would trying to keep your back to the target longer be another good feel?
Sure - that's a workable feel, Ron, if it helps you to get your downswing properly sequenced.

I'm very glad to know that this lesson helped you to fix your downswing path. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!
Tom

Yes. That is valid. The lateral hip slide keeps the rotational component in check and does not allow it to take over prematurely.

Tom, your formula for instruction::
Teaching the core concept and golf move immediately! Then spend the other 8 minutes reinforcing, give a drill, demonstrate.
So so many teachers would benefit from using this method.
They spend 8 minutes building up to something that the audience is guessing at then last 2 minutes teaching the core concept.

One great thing about this swing system, Rick, is that it does not rely on timing. This makes it very low-maintenance once we have the motions properly ingrained.

Only club I can hit with some consistency is my driver. But I can only hit it about 190 to 200 tops. I’m on my 17 th bucket of balls in 3 days. I will not go play any rounds till I can learn to hit. Keep the great videos coming they are very entertaining and informative.
