3D Printed Guns Are Easy To Make And Impossible To Stop (HBO)

- They talked about it like it was some sort of technological doomsday.
August 1st was supposed to be the day when ready-made blueprints for 3D printed guns would be released on the internet, and allow anyone to manufacture unlicensed, and untraceable, deadly weapons in their living rooms.
When Alfredo Orejuela heard about all this, his reaction was something like an eye-roll.
Orejuela is the CEO of STEAMporio. He manufacturers cheap, easy to use 3D printers for sale to schools and maker studios. And he considers the battle over 3D printed guns long over - he’s been experimenting with 3D printed plastic guns for years. The blueprints, regardless of what a judge says, were already out there.
“We're in an era where people can get the latest Drake album or Infinity War at will,” he told VICE News. “To think you can control or stop the flow of data on the internet is absolutely ludicrous.”
The gun-blueprints project started about five years ago, when Cody Wilson, a self-described crypto-anarchist and gun enthusiast, released online the designs for a fully 3D printed gun he called the Liberator.
They were available for only a few days before the government ordered him to take them down; in that time, the schematics were downloaded tens of thousands of times.
Wilson told VICE News that he is on an ideological mission: to prove that abundant guns in America are inevitable - and that gun control is doomed.
“There's literally more guns than people, maybe two guns for every person in this country,” Wilson said. “You know you don't need a 3D printer to get to your nightmare scenario.”
Orejuela doesn't share Wilson's vision. He's no fan of firearms. But on this he agrees with Wilson: the ease of acquiring guns is not a consequence of 3D printing.
For one thing, Orejuela says, the guns that 3D printing machines make really aren’t all that good: To produce one that would function without exploding takes days of painstaking work, and thousands of dollars of machinery. (Wilson concedes this much: The Liberator, he told VICE, “doesn’t really work.”) There are already easy-to-use machines that can make high quality guns, or the parts for guns, much more cheaply - including a CNC machine, which can produce parts out of metal.
What happens in the future is anyone’s guess - and Orejuela agrees it’s a certainty that 3D printing will only get easier, and cheaper. Quality, untraceable guns may very well be printable in people’s living rooms.
No amount of fretting will stop that.

1911GreaterThanALL lol
Civilians have quite literally been making weapons of war in their "living room" since at least the time that we shared this planet with other humans. Hundreds of thousands of years.
It's quite normal. Only government has tried to stop it. They don't want the competition....... Or the threat to their power.
Shhhhh bush will invade living rooms if he hears about weapons of mass destruction
"yep, use once, melt, make, use again. Comes in five nice colors-lol."
A sort of silly putty printed firearm.
One trip to Walmart and home depot. You can make guns and bombs. WTF grrr making a single shot plastic gun. FFS let the plans be out in the open and ban all hardware stores and Walmarts. Guns are not the issue.

The Scholastic Sage yeah like the liberator given to france during the time they were being occupied its like a disposable gun
The liberator is a .22 single shot pistol that’s extremely unreliable, I don’t know what kind of war these people are trying to wage
guns like this can be called weapons of war, because they’re meant to shoot a more well armed person and take their gun.
you can make a better firearm out of stuff you can buy at Lowe's or Menards... and it doesn't require a $1500 3D printer. people act like everyone has a 3D printer lyin in third junk drawer at home..
backwoodsjunkie08 hahahahaha so true
They also forget that they can buy an ar 15 in 30 mins for ~$500
backwoodsjunkie08 but allowing the poor guns now enables the more powerful ones in the future, we wouldn’t have the ak 47 if it wasn’t for the flintlock pistol
Izzy Skint the issue isnt guns, guns are already cheap and easy to manufacture. You aint going to find a 3d printer that will successfully print a gun at bestbuy.
Yes you COULD make a gun at Lowe's or Menards but that requires your own technical skill to buy the parts and assemble it properly. That's a high barrier for entry that you make a gun that A) Works and B) You don't harm youself making it.
3d Printing guns heavily lowers that barrier for entry. You dont need to be a handyman to download a .rar file and execute the blueprint to be made.
That's why it's a problem.

Bold statement OP
"Weapons of war in your living room" That's the point. The constitution protects our right to be able to defend yourself against a tyrannical government. Making weapons of war in your living room is of no responsibility or concern of the government.
Yes. Because a completely legal 3d printed handgun that is only able to ever fire 1-3 rounds before breaking is much more dangerous than a stolen and very much real handgun that has a higher magazine capacity than the 3d printed pistol will ever fire.
A 3d printed gun can definitely fire more more than 3 rounds but yea you make a good point 3d printed guns are more accessible but it's just cheaper and easier to buy a real gun or cause harm with knifes
@@sasukeuzumake8013 well I was talking about the liberator 3d printed pistol but, thanks.
@@sasukeuzumake8013 Not true. I bought a whole roll of PLA+, which is the material most people use to print firearms, on Amazon for about $20. And I can use this to print an AR15 lower receiver, which would normally cost $100 a piece, multiple times from the same roll. Even with the parts kit to put the rest of the gun together, it comes out cheaper. Plus I don't have to pay an FFL to do the background check or wait on said background check either.

Даниил Симоненко or just buy one. Most firearms are not registered by law in the USA. You can't tell people what to do with their personal property. I can't tell if you're pro or anti 2a with that statement.
Very true, but I didn't want to assume what state people are in. Only 6 states and DC require registration of some (ex. handguns, "assault weapons")/all firearms (DC and Hawaii are the only ones that regulate all), and 8 states have a BAN on registering firearms (including my state FL). Definitely agree with you on personal property, and I'm pro-2nd, but I still think we should probably try to fix the NICS because that'll make it quicker for law-abiding citizens to get guns and harder for unlawful acquisitions...
Даниил Симоненко "assault weapons don't exist. An assault rifle is full auto or burst and is illegal to own for the most part unless you can find one made before 1987. If you do, expect to pay 20 to 100 thousand dollars..
I am very aware of this fact, I put the "assault weapons" phrase in quotation marks because that is what liberals like to call semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15. Also, the date on that is 1986 ;-)
It has nothing to do with telling people what to do with their personal property, it's like getting a qualification to use a tool. For example, people get driver's licenses to use cars. I think it's a benefit for all drivers for the driver's licenses to be a more accurate representation of a qualified individual...

You can't 3D print a whole AR 15 just a Lower receiver, it won't function without the rest of the metal parts and bullets
Oh I was wrong at first it's not a $1500+ printer you'll need to spend at least $10,000 to a million because you need very high quality printer if you don't want it to blow up in the chamber, no criminal has used these , They know it's too hard and too expensive so they might as well steal one, buy one and scratch the serial number off or make one by reading a book (a lower grade criminal wont do this but I'm sure the cartel has their own way on assembling weapons)
You could get a Prusa i3 for like, $600. Thats one of the best printers on the market atm. Although yea, anyone who knows anything about guns or the limits of 3d printing knows this video is alarmist trash.
Fun fact.. The tested one blew up on the range. The bullet shattered and there was nothing left except a grip?
So tell me? What makes anyone think that plastic will work for something with this amount of force?
Sure you can print a lower in a really high quality plastic.. but where are you suppose to get the rest?
I hate the bullshit media and this is a good example of what it is..
Its an old comment, but your right here. How can someone seriously think that a plastic barrel is more than a tool for harming yourself? Everyone stupid enough to use it deserves the outcome when it blows up right in the face. And blaming 3D printer is equally stupid. For the price of a 3D printer you can get a small CNC mill that can work with aluminium or even steel (very slow) and with them, you actually can make gun parts just as easy that don't blow up in your face. All in your home. So, should CNC mills get regulated since they are clearly more dangerous than 3D printers? Make you think how stupid the whole discussion is...
As someone who uses 3D printers now and then, its hilarious to see how politicians talk about stuff they clearly dont understand at all. Like geriatric parrots repeating slogans from 20 years ago thinking they sound smart.....
A better option for a plastic gun is to simply get a strong piece of plastic and drill out a barrel.

This vid was outdated in the technology featured in it when it came out. Now it's LIGHT-YEARS behind the time in the world of 3d printed firearms. You can make them now with material that in some cases holds up better than a regular smithed firearm from what I've seen, and at a fraction of the price too
That's simply not true, no plastic can replace metal in terms of strength, durability, temperature-resistance.
You simply can't print guns, if you don't want to end up in a hospital after shooting such a gun.

I bought my first AR-15 and I was blown away that only the lower required a background check, whereas the upper was delivered to my door. The lower only has the fire selector and trigger assembly, arguably much easier to replicate than a functioning BCG and barrel. If you can print lowers online that will fit a Trigger, you can completely dodge the system.
There are many designs for AR-15 lowers around. I'm not sure how well they work, but you could Google it if you're interested.

It's pretty obvious why this regulation is happening, and it's not because of gun control advocates. This is happening because the firearms industry is scared that they'll lose their market. By cutting it off now while the printable guns about as dangerous to the person firing it as the person they're pointing it at they're hoping to stop it progressing to a stage where a reliable firearm can be produced like this, or where competing businesses can use the technology to break into the market.

If anything, how do you reload the liberator?
the thing with guns is they are very simple in principle. I mean you can fire a bullet by simply hitting the back of it. Then you can make a gun with a tube (e.g conduit) and a spring loaded pin that will strike the back. The more difficult part is obtaining bullets - and even those can be made with bullet molds and casing molds. Knowing how to load them with gun powder may be the harder part. But undoubtedly the information is available online.
In the uk it is legal to buy spent bullet casings/ bullets (without the powder) then you can just use them as i saw on this video.
but u still need a fire pin and that not something that u can print

The more interesting point is ammunition, actually. If you live in a country where you can just go in a shop and buy bullets - why not just buying a cheap gun then? Why risking your life with a plastic gun that has a 50% chance on exploding in your face?
youre lucky honestly, it will never be like that in the united states
