- From 2020, Bill Whitaker reports on untraceable firearms, called ghost guns, which are handcrafted via legally purchased gun kits.
This week, a new federal regulation took effect that requires the kits to include serial numbers and mandates background checks for people who buy the kits from dealers.

Serial numbers are only useful if a weapon has been found at a crime scene. Guns leave better forensic evidence in the form of shell casings and recovered bullets.

It has been since even before the ratification of the 2A. The numbers don't even add up as it is SUPER rare to die by a ghost gun. Just like an AR 15. But for some reason ghost guns and ARs are getting vilified.
Lock, stock and barrel. The right to build your own Firearm is older than the Constitution. An advantage to building your own Firearm is not having to pay the manufacturers tax that is added to store purchased firearms.
Please do a segment on mental illness in the USA, and how it causes people to want to commit mass murders and why the laws aren't enforced when people are set free for violent crimes and allowed to commit more violent crimes...

That's because what the ATF says is legal / not legal changes with the weather (or should I say climate). Put another way just when you've changed the hem of the skirt the style changes and you have to let it out or take it up again. The reason why most "enthusiasts" don't generally deal with these things is two fold: They're typically not very reliable (and thus not good if/when you'd need to depend on them) and getting much better parts (that may need to be purchased via a FFL) are in some cases less expensive and have manufacturer support. While I support the DIY approach I wouldn't use a fully self built firearm either in competition or especially not as a self-defense piece - the lawyers would go nuts.
It skirts the laws because it allows felons an easy avenue to get a gun that they otherwise would not have. They can buy the kit legally and until they put it together they haven't broken the law but we all know that felons don't obey laws.

But I really fear that up until I make my very first gun purchase, that laws will be so restricted, that I'll only be able to purchase, fire and keep at the gun shop on visitation only. Dystopic to the point where even a CCW is out of the picture for us civies. May God help us all.

You CAN'T buy the completed Personally Made Firearm (PFM) from anyone who manufactures firearms. You can only buy the uncompleted and separate parts to construct a firearm. The uncompleted Lower (or Frame) must be purchased and necessary processes performed to complete the firearm. If desired the firearm does include a metal plate on which a serial number can be engraved. Gangs and criminals do NOT take the time to buy and assemble their firearms.
At nearly a 100% rate; people who use "ghost guns" to commit crimes have gotten off with light or basically no punishment for previous crimes.
If you want to make a dent in crime rates how about we start with that?

Ghost Guns cost as much or more than a "regular" one. A stolen gun sells for cheap. a Thief / criminal will not buy a Ghost gun because of the cost. Criminals do not care if their guns are stolen because if they get caught they are going to jail anyway

ATF has already said this "rule" changes NOTHING for companies selling "80% receivers", they just cant sell the receiver + all the tools at the same time.

There needs to be a law for ghost guns ! Just like it's law's for real guns . It pisses me off that these criminals can build guns and not be held accountable for it.
It's way easier just to buy a gun off of the street, or steal it. Real criminals are not going to be buying these kits. You have to have tools and the skills to build them. They are just a tiny amount of the guns in this country. A bump stock does not turn a semi-auto into a machine gun anymore than a shoestring does.

Stop calling them ghost guns. They aren’t even a gun! It is a piece of plastic that has many functions needed to be finished in order to be a firearm. And after that, you have to PRAY that you did everything right and it doesn’t blow up in your hand on the first shot. Then you pray again that it will cycle rounds like it’s supposed to, which most don’t. They are riddled with issues when trying to fire
All I can say is you can learn how to build anything from watching UA-cam videos, even a ghost gun. So politicians are trying to ban assault rifles and trying to make gun laws stricter but gun laws can't stop ghost guns. Even making a Improvised explosive device can be made by watch UA-cam videos. UA-cam should prohibit such videos. There's no oversight of UA-cam videos.
NY is taking a stand on this by making so you need a rifle permit to buy a .22 long rifle.
The key phrase here is you don't know how many guns are out there and you don't know who has them. Equals gun registry. I wonder how many of those guns just had the serial number scrubbed off that classifieds as a ghost gun. And again if the criminals are the ones that are breaking the law and having these guns. It is not a gun problem it is a crime problem why go after the law abiding citizen it has every right to have one. We know what works and what doesn't work it has been proven time and time again. What does not work are gun free zones. The shooters are going out of their way to make sure they're at a gun free zone. What we know does work is they heavily armed law abiding community. You want to stop these mass shootings or at least drastically reduce them put the fear of their lives into these shooters where they don't know if the person standing next to them is armed or not watch the cases of mass shootings dwindle. We already see this where people are allowed to conceal carry to protect themselves and their family.

Making A ghost gun costs more than buying one. Straw man purchases of cheaper serialized guns that criminals simply file off the serial for are cheaper and faster for criminals. Criminals are going to do what they can to get guns. Or use something else other than a gun, like run over people with a car or stab people with a knife.
Not everyone is competent enough to put those guns together. You know how many gun owners I run into that don't know how to properly load a gun let alone disassemble it? Too many.
You folks have no idea what an 80% build gun is. I think you need to talk to gun guys like me to learn about the specifics of the headaches we go through to build one and put it on our trust.

Ghost gun is a government manufactured slang term for homemade firearms, which are perfectly legal, provided you're not a convicted felon. These "kits" are not the only way to create a homemade gun.

@@mrhamburger6936 Wrong - "zip guns" are fired by a rubber band similarly to a slingshot. Although they might fall into the category of a privately produced firearm, it is a specific type of firearm.
@@ifimustimust Rubber bands? Zip guns refer to single shot home made firearms that typically use an open bolt or slam fire type action. I have never seen a zip gun that used rubber bands. Springs are a thing. The only firearm I have ever seen that used rubber bands is the early beta versions of the songbird 3d printed .22lr pistol. And they needed like 10 rubber bands to even work, which is why they use a spring now.

Why wouldn't that be mentioned when they claim the number of crimes that "ghost guns" are used in are increasing? It's entirely dishonest to say that without mentioning they've just changed the definition in a way that substantially increased the number.

Homemade firearms have always been legal and a part of American 2A History all the way back to the founding of the nation. In fact, a lot of the firearms used in the revolutionary war were made by the colonists themselves.
What’s interesting is that even if they solved the ‘ghost gun’ problem they don’t do anything about violent criminals. When the DAs won’t get serious on career criminals but is more than willing to make an example of and prosecute the average citizen.
You need to pass a background check to get those kits. The videos aren't allowed on UA-cam. Don't be fooled by the manipulation. Use your own brains people.

I love doing different ar builds and since I live in a communist run liberal state I have to use polymer 80%. the amount of time it actually takes and knowledge is so far from being simple and easy. I`ve heard of many people messing them up not building them right. Knowing how California is I would bet that better than half of those where seeded in by LEO to make the numbers look bad.
UA-cam would take it down. Even 60 min can’t get away with instructing like that.
Ghost gun is just a term to scare people. It's also always been legal to build your own gun for personal use, you just can't sell it. It's not something any can just do. When you buy the parts they come milled but you still have to do all the riveting, lathing, head spacing, etc. You need an advanced knowledge of gun smithing to put it together and takes a professional weeks to months to assemble it. You need access to a machine shop to make one. It's not as easy as media makes it out to be.
It's tragic anytime someone is murdered. but what does that have to do with a serial number on a gun?

Manufacturing denotes entering into commerce which is regulated by the ATF, thou are likely looking for "make" "making" "made". Words matter. Also may want to learn the difference between "person" and a man or woman. Thou has a person, thou are not the person. May also want to stop using "you" and "me" haphazardly if you do.
