  • Here's a video that entails the trials and tribulations involved with removal of the front cover on a Ford 6.4L diesel. Those of us who still own our originals will more than likely experience this procedure....OR PAY someone to do it and wellsir....I've learned the only person I trust to wrench on my truck...IS ME.

    I really enjoyed your video and used to own a 6.0 PS diesel. Great work and tips such a shame that Navistar and Ford made so many costly mistakes on these engine which ended up being hard on us the consumers. Great work and really enjoyed your video

    Yes when the cavitation eats through the front plate and gets in to the oil it will certainly leave a mess. After my problem I flushed the engine crankcase 4 times to be sure that there were no coolant in with the oil. I was lucky. Very lucky. 50K miles later still OK. This is the time you replace with Ford diesel coolant with the cavitation additive. And change your coolant often

    That was the wear ring you pulled off of the front seal. What you thought was the seal torn wasn't. It was just the sealing material that slides when installed on the crank.

      The revised seal has a ring/sleeve that must be pressed on the crank and you can't pull it off with a simple seal puller. I believe I mentioned that two "mechanics" (including one at a Ford dealership) were supposed to have updated it but.........nope.

    How much would you charge to do a job like that if I brought all my parts and fluids

      When I've repaired rigs for friends who've asked, (I'm not a mechanic by trade) normally it's 75% of an OEM labor estimate plus parts, any special tools I'll need (I keep the tools), and a short subscription to alldatadiy.com IF there's internal engine work to do. That being said, I'M LITTERALLY in the middle of swapping a longblock into my Pop's 6.4L so it's usually time that I'm in need of. I'm trying to have the video up in a couple of weeks, but let's see how it goes.

    Hello Frank, you mention a book several times in the video. I'm assuming it's a book that tells you and shows you all the parts of the motor. Would you happen to know where I could buy one? Even just giving me the name would be of much help.

      I'm referring to alldatadiy.com. The online "book." It's taken the place of Haynes and Chilton manuals; actual books which used to be the norm. Damn kids have it so EASY now!!

      Yoooooo, thank you very much. This will help me tremendously. I'm putting my front part back together after I opened it to replace the AC compressor and other parts and I didn't remember were some bolts went. This will help me finish fixing my truck. Thank you again. Haha, true but I much prefer books over webpages.

    Great video !! Will be replacing the gasket on the front cover and this video will help me a lot... one question is . Is it easy to replace the oil cooler .

    • @frankdaiii6403
      @frankdaiii6403  3 роки тому +1

      I would definitely NOT say it's "easy". At MINIMUM you have to raise the cab, remove the turbos and turbo pedestal. I've seen a video that swears you can then remove the oil cooler, and install a new one, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASSEMBLE THE TWO HALVES AFTER GETTING THEM IN POSITION ONE AT A TIME. I couldn't get it done without removing the intake manifold which added A TON OF STEPS to the process. I started a video of it, but once i had to remove the intake, I had to abandon the video because i was really pressed for time. You can feel free to ask me anything regarding the front cover or oil cooler and i'll try to give you a heads up on anything I can. FDA3

      FRANK DAIII yeah I might end up just installing the bulletproof half kit that goes where the oil filter sets. I mean the truck has close high mileage already . Is just that is leaking a great amount of oil.

      @@noesalgado5038 HAH!! I've got 320k on mine. Guess what? After the front cover, I replaced the valve cover gskts, glow plug harnesses, upper AND lower oil pan gaskets (yes, I lifted the engine)......AND IT STILL LEAKS!. I've just been so pissed that I haven't even tried to find where it's leaking from; also because it's leaking a lot less. I'm thinking it's the rear main seal. It's all that's left!

    • @noesalgado5038

      FRANK DAIII Damn mine leaked for 4 yrs but it was just a small amount probably a drop every minute. I drove the truck like that I didn’t really care . Now when is running is just straight pouring probably 1qt in 30 mins. It looks that is coming from the front cover or the seal. But truck runs great. Is just passing 300,000 miles right now .

      @@noesalgado5038 There was a redesign of the front main seal! I actually drove to El Paso from south Tx, for a funeral. Got to my buddy's, said hello , blah blah, went to get my stuff and my truck left a complete oil-shadow all over his driveway. The FMS gave out and was pouring oil out. the new design comes with the wear ring I speak of in the video. It makes a huge difference. It's tough to tell though because the fan blows most of the leaking oil to the rear of the engine.
