The ARC 170 is a good ship. My personal favorite Star Wars fighter is the TIE Defender. It's a perfect blend of rebel tactics of using a few very powerful star fighters and imperial intimidation. That, and it looks really cool. It's a shame it's not canon anymore.
“I don’t think god wants to hear from me right now, because I’m about to go out there in that sky, in that plane, and remove one of his creations from the universe.”
I always thought that with its three cockpits, tail gun, and large wings yet chubby airframe, the ARC-170 looks a lot like the real life Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber.
Some of favorites include: -Gunstar from The Last Starfighter -Wraith from Starcraft -Thunderfighter from Buck Rogers -Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond -Valkyrie-class fighter from Star Trek: Invasion
Man, total props for mentioning the F-302. I always loved Stargate SG-1/Atlantis since for most of the series the Tauri were considerably less advanced than their enemies, seeing them adapt and overcome this with current technology mixed with reserved engineered alien technology was fascinating.
Anyone else think its passed beyond time that another X-Wing game was made? Or Freespace? Forget open world crap. Give me a Story Driven, mission format Space Fighter game!!
The SA-43 'Hammerhead' from Space: Above and beyond was a cool design. There are even rumours Russians seeing the scale models were caught taking pictures of them after thinking they were a new kind of advanced U.S. tactical fighter lol.
Star Fury is love, Star Fury is life. Star Fury is what an actual X-Wing, TIE fighter hybrid would look like. Not the X-Tie, or Ryloth Deethseed. or even the Chiss Clawcraft were able to incoprorate both ship's aspects so flawlessly.
Not withstanding the deathblossom, the Gunstar was, by far, the most practical starfighter I've ever seen on screen. It had a separate gunner giving the pilot the ability to focus on flying. The gunners gymbal allowed the gunner to fire weapons independent of the ships orientation and piloting maneuvers. It not only had the thrust vectoring of the starfury, but it used separate nozzles that gave in omni-dirrectional thrust with vectoring. Reverse, up, down, side to side. It could jink in any direction without telegraphing its intention to avoid directed energy weapons. It had a range of DEW and KEW at it's beck and call. The weapons had 360 degree coverage so "he's on your six" is meaningless, enemy ships were either in range or they weren't and it didn't matter where their position was. Other than the fact that the ship was butt-ugly, it's real world practical, and I appreciated it for that.
May be part nostalgia, but I've always been a sucker for the design of the Star Patrol Enforcer from Tachyon: The Fringe. The four articulated engines combined with the extremely fast way they move in game just blends so well.
Number 1 for me would have been the SA-43 Hammerhead Indo-Exo Atmospheric Attack Fighter from Space: Above & Beyond :) Atmospheric capable, RCS thrusters, Top mounted cockpit-controlled defensive turret, and the ability for both missile and bomb loadouts. Ontop of the fact that the full scale mock up caused russian spies to think it was the USA's newest combat aircraft lol
I agree 80% with you on the reasoning my #4 pick would of been the SA-43 Endo/Exo attack jet "Hammerhead" from "Space, Above and Beyond". It was the F-302 of my childhood. *REQUEST* USS Saratoga (SCVN-2812) John F. Kennedy Class Space Carrier from "Space, Above and Beyond
The League fighters like the Hydra in Colony Wars were crazy awesome. Jump engines, three different guns , EMP and missiles and tow cable. The Turbokat from SWAT Kats deserves a mention too
Gotta love the Mark VII Viper and its essentially "F-16 in space" aesthetic, especially as real F-16 pilots called their planes "Vipers" in reference to the original show!
Great list there Daniel, I will say though that the Colonial Vipers are my favorite fighters and I am glad that you chose the mk VII, however it was cool to see other space fighter designs.
Hey Spacedock, one thing I'd love to see you cover is Fighters, Bombers and their cross hybrids from Warhammer 40K. My all time favorite fighter in any Sci Fi Universe right now is the Thunderbolt due to its sheer power, maneuverability and versatility and I'd love to see it covered. One very relevant source of material I'd like to reference is Double Eagle by Dan Abnett which covers an unusual fighter wing, the Phantine XX who used to fly the much lighter Lightnings but were switched out to Thunderbolts by the beginning of Double Eagle. This book provides so much interesting and unique perspectives on not only this unique craft but in fighters, bombers and air superiority in general. Hope to see a video covering this soon!
If we're talking favorite fighter craft, I've always had a soft spot for the Arwing of Star Fox fame. Such a neat little fighter capable of doing so much. If anyone is familiar with the "Sunrise over Lylat" fan fiction, the Seraph Arwing is no doubt my favorite version.
I really like the generational development of the Mark II because it makes sense that technology changes and ships also along with that (for the better).
I have always been partial to (in no particular order): 1. TIE Fighters, all versions (Star Wars, canon, EU) 2. Valkyrie Fighter, All versions (Star Trek EU) 3. Gunstar (Last Starfighter, The) 4. Cosmo Zero (Space Battleship Yamato) 5. YF-19 (Macross Plus)
I really do like all the fighters from Babylon 5. They are all so unique from one another but still manage to fit into that universe. It's alien tech well done.
Thanks for adding the F-302. I was wondering if this ship would make the list. I remember Jack O'Neill asking if the ship he was piloting had phasers. Tip of the hat to Star Trek. Great video!!
So much competition to chose from. There's certainly no shortage of sci-fi fighters. For me, I'll also always love the Hmerhead from Space: Above and Beyond. It looks like something the USAF would build and the removable cock pits were perfectly practical for space flight.
ARC-170 is my favorite as well, really useful for covering your tail when your being transported to the ground in an LAAT or when your commanding your battalion from a Venator. And they are good for reliable air support for when your commanding your troops in the front lines.
Great choices in star fighters for your Top 5 List!!! Totally agree with your reasons for each of your choices. I too loved the ARC-170. We see how as the Republic transitioned into the Empire, Incom fell out of political favor with the Empire in spite of fielding superior designs to Sinar Ship Systems' cheap and expendable fighters
I like the Mass effect fighters. Much like a lot of other ships in mass effect, the fighters just look sleek and fast. Due to their size, these fighters can be economically fitted with proportionally large thrusters and drive core. They consist of 2 pivoting thrusters at the back that get used in a similar fashion to the rudders of real life fighters, and 2 forward thrusters for deceleration and increasing maneuverability. There are 2 known varients of fighters. The 16m Trident Mk3 class Attacker(designed to harass larger ships), fitted with 2 rapid fire mass accelerator cannons and 2 missile launchers, carrying 6 disruptor torpedos(designed to take out the shields of larger ships) The 11m Trishul class interceptor(designed to engage enemy fighters), armed with 4 rapid fire mass accelerator cannons
B-wing is my favorite, just totally unique, heavily armed, cool rotating system, and the type of overwhelming presence that you can't get with just an X-wing or Y-wing
I don't think I'll ever be able to appreciate the Arc 170. It's just so busy and haphazard like the designers went "X wing, but more wings!" The N1, A-wing and Tie Interceptor will always be my top Star Wars fighters.
Luxy it's biggest weakness is that it's kinda slow compared to the z-95 and X-wing, it's not a dog fighter so it doesn't have very powerful forward cannons but I love the design especially in clone wars, though the way the Z-95 spins and flys makes it my favourite, it may not be as armoured as the x-wing or have as much fire power but it's still cool
Pietro Pietro I always considered it as a starfighter and bomber simultaneously. In Star Wars Rebels it's primarily used as starfighter so I guess both are correct. (Now when I think about it: Besides The Clone Wars and Rogue One we never saw Y-Wings do bombing runs very often)
Don't forget, it's not just a single rear gun, it's a dual gun, one on top and one on the bottom of the fuselage, that I think are linked together, providing a much more useful firing arc
The ARC-170 is the definition of a fighter-bomber! It's even got a tail gunner like an TBF Avenger or an SBD Devastator. The T-65 X-wing is at least a multi-role strike fighter similar to an F-4 Phantom II.
I love the Firestorm Fighter from XCOM Enemy Within. I love how it is represented as finally being able to fight the alien UFOs on an equivalent level.
0:14 holy shit, the Argon Nova! I'm so happy someone such as you is aware of the X-Universe game series! Is there any possibility you might cover its ships in the future?
The Panther has always had a special place in my heart, such an awesome design, and incredibly unique even within the X series classification. Plus launching fighter wings from it is awesome in "cockpit" view.
The arc-170 is one of my favorites, a formidable and imposing heavy fighter equally capable of dogfighting with lighter craft or strafeing larger ones. Of course the B-wing is a close second... It's more of a dedicated assault fighter however, and is specialized for dealing with larger, heavier targets.
I nominate Occulus drone of Mass effect. It's Air Superiority fighter , Close Air Support and Torpedo bomber cramped in single unit . Basically a multirole fighter drone. It's also unmanned , much faster , more powerful , more maneuverable than any Starfighter of mass effect.
Holy crap! I love the ARC-170. It's been my favorite since seeing it in Episode III. I always thought the set up of the three crew cockpit was inspired by the real life US Navy and Marine Corp TBF Avenger from World War II.
They had other Mk VIIs prior to the arrival of the Pegasus (you see at least two launch during the Crunching the Numbers battle), but I believe they numbered in the single digits and were seen as incredibly valuable assets that weren't to be used unless absolutely necessary due to how advanced they were compared to the Mk IIs.
The Valkyrie-class Mark I (Star Trek: Invasion) is a very nice design, even though it probably would only be useful against shuttles or unshielded starships realistically speaking. The other designs never really seemed that much of upgrades to me and would lose their atmospheric capabilities without some form of anti-gravity system.
If ever you run out of material you could look to the science fiction novel series "Perry Rhodan" ( the most successful science fiction book series ever written). In more than 55 years of being in print it accumulated a huge amount of interesting spacecraft to talk about :-)
I have to say the federal fighter from elite dangerous is one hell of a good fighter, not because it looks cool, but it's really well balanced in terms of its capabilities, essentially the jack of all trades of the fighters/interceptors
Just to clarify, I do intend to go through my favorite Interceptors, Bombers etc. eventually, as well as various types of larger warship. :)
Can you do a video on Spacedock (Star Trek) ?
Spacedock interstellar pilot??? XD
Spacedock Halo Wars 2 released the Forerunner Despair fighter if you were wondering
I love your selection of fighter practically the same list as my own
The ARC 170 is a good ship. My personal favorite Star Wars fighter is the TIE Defender. It's a perfect blend of rebel tactics of using a few very powerful star fighters and imperial intimidation. That, and it looks really cool. It's a shame it's not canon anymore.
>Colonial Viper
>ARC-170
I see, you're a man of culture
Callsign-YukiMizuki 170=F15
X wing=exaggerated F22
Blazinhorsepower Viper = F-16 Even today, -16 pilots call their ships 'Vipers'.
Gerald W. Wright didn’t know that.
Glad there's other people out there who appreciate the ARC-170
Oliver Stretton In fact it's my favourite Starfighter from any Sci-fi ever.
Oliver Stretton The best starfighter in Star Wars
It would be my ship of choice irl.
Definitely the greatest
It always reminded me of the dehaviland mosquito, I love it for that alone.
i would have included the SA-43 'Hammerhead' from space above and beyond. love the design and it operates in space and planetary atmosphere
Chiggy von Richthofen’s custom fighter should be on there too
ABANDON ALL HOPE
Hells yeah!!
“I don’t think god wants to hear from me right now, because I’m about to go out there in that sky, in that plane, and remove one of his creations from the universe.”
“And when I get back, I’m going to drink a bottle of scotch as if it was Chiggy von Richthofen’s blood and celebrate his death.”
“Amen.”
Would've been my number one.
I always thought that with its three cockpits, tail gun, and large wings yet chubby airframe, the ARC-170 looks a lot like the real life Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber.
Some of favorites include:
-Gunstar from The Last Starfighter
-Wraith from Starcraft
-Thunderfighter from Buck Rogers
-Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond
-Valkyrie-class fighter from Star Trek: Invasion
For me it’s the original Starfury Aurora, it’s just a perfectly realistic starfighter, that looks simply amazing.
Man, total props for mentioning the F-302. I always loved Stargate SG-1/Atlantis since for most of the series the Tauri were considerably less advanced than their enemies, seeing them adapt and overcome this with current technology mixed with reserved engineered alien technology was fascinating.
Excuse me, less advance? They are pretty much ape. XD
Sometimes less advanced can be better - like Human vs Replicators ane asgards vs replicators - energy weapon no harm, old buttlets destroy them
Anyone else think its passed beyond time that another X-Wing game was made? Or Freespace? Forget open world crap. Give me a Story Driven, mission format Space Fighter game!!
I dont know if youve already played it but Battlestar Diaspora is a great game.
Squadron 42...
Tachyon: The Fringe is sadly underrated. And it’s got Bruce Campbell voicing the main character!
I agree!
Hey, you got your wish in Squadrons!
The SA-43 'Hammerhead' from Space: Above and beyond was a cool design.
There are even rumours Russians seeing the scale models were caught taking pictures of them after thinking they were a new kind of advanced U.S. tactical fighter lol.
martiansoldier this one....and the F/A-37 talons from the film Stealth
Always happy to see another Babylon 5 fan!
Missing the Hammerhead from Space: Above & Beyond. Overlooked show and overlooked design.
The comment section definitely hasn't overlooked it! That makes me happy.
My personal favorite space fighter is the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter. Incredible design, powerful, and it has DEATH BLOSSOM! Totally cool!
Would love to see you cover The Last Starfighter
Shawn Chung The Gunstar? Forgot that one.
Deathblossom!
That was a really inspiring fighter.
The Gunstar and the Xurian Ship.

Other than the fact that the ship was butt-ugly, it's real world practical, and I appreciated it for that.
A top 5 video thats 5 minutes and 55 seconds long.
Super Akman Haha. Also, I love your profile pic.
Everyone likes the ARC-170.
@Lee Adama Yeah well you lost your touch for fighters after taking the conn of the Pegasus so I don’t wanna hear it
May be part nostalgia, but I've always been a sucker for the design of the Star Patrol Enforcer from Tachyon: The Fringe. The four articulated engines combined with the extremely fast way they move in game just blends so well.
Yeah the 302 would be in my Top 5 as well!
I totally agree with that assessment. I really liked the Hammerhead fighter design.
What about Chiggy’s custom fighter?
Yes
I’m surprised the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter didn’t make this list!
I agree 80% with you on the reasoning my #4 pick would of been the SA-43 Endo/Exo attack jet "Hammerhead" from "Space, Above and Beyond". It was the F-302 of my childhood.
*REQUEST*
USS Saratoga (SCVN-2812) John F. Kennedy Class Space Carrier from "Space, Above and Beyond

Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond
Have you considered covering the various mecha from any of the Macross series? The YF-19 in particular is absolutely gorgeous.
Yeah that's a good idea, do a mech based list. I can help if you need it.
VF-25 Messiah
Looking forward to the next 40k ship, when ever that might be :D
Hi5 for having both Starfury's and F-302's in your in your top 5.
My favorite fighter from any sci fi series was the hammerhead from space above and beyond. I would love to see some videos from that series.
Hey Spacedock, one thing I'd love to see you cover is Fighters, Bombers and their cross hybrids from Warhammer 40K. I'm so glad we share the same top 2 fighters

If anyone is familiar with the "Sunrise over Lylat" fan fiction, the Seraph Arwing is no doubt my favorite version.
I was looking for a comment about the Arwing.
I really like the generational development of the Mark II because it makes sense that technology changes and ships also along with that (for the better).
these are some of my favorite types of videos. just you extolling the virtues of your favorite types of vessels.
I have always been partial to (in no particular order):
1. TIE Fighters, all versions (Star Wars, canon, EU)
2. Valkyrie Fighter, All versions (Star Trek EU)
3. Gunstar (Last Starfighter, The)
4. Cosmo Zero (Space Battleship Yamato)
5. YF-19 (Macross Plus)
I really do like all the fighters from Babylon 5. They are all so unique from one another but still manage to fit into that universe. It's alien tech well done.
Arc170 is hands down one of my favorite fighters in Star Wars as well. Great Pick.
That ARC-170 has been my home screen for over a year! Nice job on the video!
The ARC-170 looks like a muscle car, and that just tickles my fancy so much.
Vulture from elite dangerous is one of my favs. A great deal of power in a small package.
AbyssFlight "Small" I know what you mean though. Fun fact: an eagle for example is about 30m long so that's about the same length as a C-130.
glad someone else gave the v-wing some love. its a really nice looking ship.
ARC-170 is my favorite as well, really useful for covering your tail when your being transported to the ground in an LAAT or when your commanding your battalion from a Venator. And they are good for reliable air support for when your commanding your troops in the front lines.
What about the "Hammerhead" from Space: Above and Beyond?
Viper Mark II is definitely the best looking space fighter. So beautiful.
TIE Defender is my favourite. It looks badass and is the most powerful starfighter in starwars.
Yeah, TIE Defender and Avenger are two of my favorites.
Best design ... TIE Interceptor. Such a cool fighter.

The 11m Trishul class interceptor(designed to engage enemy fighters), armed with 4 rapid fire mass accelerator cannons
"Hideous V-19 Torrents" lol
B-wing is my favorite, just totally unique, heavily armed, cool rotating system, and the type of overwhelming presence that you can't get with just an X-wing or Y-wing
I'm so sad you featured a picture of the Argon nova sentinel, but didn't mention it :( the X-games definetly deserve some love!
I don't think I'll ever be able to appreciate the Arc 170. It's just so busy and haphazard like the designers went "X wing, but more wings!" The N1, A-wing and Tie Interceptor will always be my top Star Wars fighters.
My favourite starfighter is the Y-Wing... it's just so powerful and unique. The design is perfect.
Luxy I love the Y-wing, both clone wars era and galactic civil war era, but isn't it considered a bomber?
Pietro Pietro I always considered it as a starfighter and bomber simultaneously. In Star Wars Rebels it's primarily used as starfighter so I guess both are correct. (Now when I think about it: Besides The Clone Wars and Rogue One we never saw Y-Wings do bombing runs very often)
I think of it as a strike fighter. It has some air to air ability, but it mostly does strafing and bombing attacks against capital ships etc.
Luxy technically its a bomber.
Don't forget, it's not just a single rear gun, it's a dual gun, one on top and one on the bottom of the fuselage, that I think are linked together, providing a much more useful firing arc
The sabre or rapier from wing commander 2 were good, the hammerhead from space above and beyond.
The ARC-170 is the definition of a fighter-bomber! It's even got a tail gunner like an TBF Avenger or an SBD Devastator. The T-65 X-wing is at least a multi-role strike fighter similar to an F-4 Phantom II.
I just love the 302, glad it made it on your list too. It's such a sexy beast.
Awesome Starfighters Episode SpaceDock !
I LOVE The Tie Defender--- The only Competent ship in the entire empire...
I always liked the Hamerhead Fighter from Space Above and Beyond
the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter is the one of the best looking star fighters ever :) Its criminally overlooked haha
Favorite fighter would be the F-302 Interceptor
I think just how the Shadow Fighters were deployed puts them into the top 5.
WOOT! I thought I was the only one that prefers the Arc over the the X-wing.
I too have loved the arc-170 since it's introduction.
I know it may not be a popular choice here, but my heart will always belong inside an Arwing.
Ahhh the ARC 170, great pick man! Out of all the fighters, even from my beloved 40k, that fighter is just the best imo.
I love the Firestorm Fighter from XCOM Enemy Within. I love how it is represented as finally being able to fight the alien UFOs on an equivalent level.
I hate they removed fighters from XCOM 2.
I think I couldn't agree more with that list
0:14 holy shit, the Argon Nova! I'm so happy someone such as you is aware of the X-Universe game series!
Is there any possibility you might cover its ships in the future?
Huge fan of X, been trying to find a way to cram some of it's ships into the timetable for ages, will get some up eventually :)
I really can't wait! It's my favorite game franchise ever, and I find sad that it is so obscure.
The Panther has always had a special place in my heart, such an awesome design, and incredibly unique even within the X series classification. Plus launching fighter wings from it is awesome in "cockpit" view.
yea, pls do some stuff about the x-series. im actualy playing it...my personal favorite is the hyperion (paranid m6)
I would also love to see some X series ships covered in Spacedock episode.
SDF-1 Macross and/or valkyrie fighters
Karel Mclean YAAAASSSSS!!!!
Max is the TOP GUN of all Sci-Fi fighter pilots!!
How awesome is Max? Even his greatest foe loves him... literally. :)
Didn't Max get divorced in macross 7? Also that series was horrible
Vince Charan It was just a divorce for show for her political career. They stayed together in secret.
Personnally, my favorite is the T-70 X-wing. I especially liked Poe's custom black and red fighter in episode VII
The star Fury looks like a God damn X-Wing
V-wing is my #1. Great design.
Personally, my favorite is the Vulture Droid.
I'd still love to see a Top 5 on Bombers and Fighter Bombers/Attackers
Blade Mk.5 Interceptor of the Kushan fleet. (Homeworld). Wonderful machine.
This is a great list. The Arc and v wing are a surprise
Why don´t you talk about Buck Rodgers´s Starfighter and about "Space Beyond and Above" Hammerhead ?
I think they have an unusual design.
Thunderbolt is a beautiful design, but the ARC 170 ....WOW !!.
Could you do something on "Space above and beyond's" SA-43 Endo/Exo-Atmospheric Attack Jet ("Hammerhead") fighters?
Love the fact that you are using the battlezone 2 theam song at the end of your videos :D
Personal fave ( for the sake of realistic craft ) The Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond.
Omg thank u for the 302 shout out.
I too love the ARC-170 ... kinda reminds me of a deadly dragonfly
BLESS YOU, ARC-170 is the best Incom fighter in my opinion too. But to be honest, it's more a tie between this ship and the TIE Interceptor
Jared Holderead It’s not a fighter! It’s a bomber and easy meat for any fighter.
There's a reason Incom didn't put a turret on the T-65 - the X-Wing does the same job more effectively than the ARC-170 and with fewer crew.
Space Above and Beyond, Hammerheads.
I did expect the X-Wing but the ARC 170 is a better choice overall
The Vorlon fighter is my favourite. and probably the most powerful fighter out there
You should’ve considered the Rylan Gunstar from The Last Starfighter, that is just a perfect rounded fighter design!
My favourite has to be a Viper, and probably either the TOS/Mark I or the Mark II.
But there are a lot of great Star Wars fighters as well.
In more than 55 years of being in print it accumulated a huge amount of interesting spacecraft to talk about :-)
YES!! Hello fellow Rhodanite!
I have to say the federal fighter from elite dangerous is one hell of a good fighter, not because it looks cool, but it's really well balanced in terms of its capabilities, essentially the jack of all trades of the fighters/interceptors
