So the Holy City can't actually move around wherever it wants, and is a lot slower than smaller civilian and military craft (though given the fact High Charity is the capital, everything comes to *it,* so this doesn't matter too much.)

I'm surprised that you didn't include the space station from 2001. Though on a sadder note the actor who voiced HAL 9000 passed away recently. It was 1-2 days after the passing of Stan Lee.
I just wish they'd have featured the Klingon Chef more on DS9, as it would flesh out an established culture more like they did the Ferengi and Cardassians :)
Honestly while I appriciate the work and dedication of the spacedock videos I normally just come here to look at cool pics of sci fi ships for inspiration in sandbox games.
These are indeed excellent picks but I think Star Trek Beyond: Yorktown should be a strong contender, when I first saw it on the big screen it was breathtaking.
Didn't expect Treasure Planet to get mentioned. I'm glad it was thought because I think that's an underrated film that not enough people appreciate or even know about.
I think it's the first true cartoon originated media 'Cartoon movie' (Unless you count Cowboy bebop as one as well but that might cause a fire storm by anime fans if I call it a "Cartoon" even though anime=animated/animation in japan.] that Space dock has covered. Most are either live action shows (Expanse, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Star Wars movies, etc...) or video games (Mass effect, Halo, Wing Commander, and others.) It's a welcomed surprise.
One of the best parts about seeing the spaceport in Treasure Planet is the musical piece that goes with it. I can't ever hear the music and NOT visualize the scene in my head!
What about my personal favourite, Space Station V from 2001? It is awesome looking and firmly based on science fact. And the way it was introduced in the film was amazing too.
That thing influenced science fiction artist for a generation. I'm also partial to the polygonal starports of the Elite games, now named as the Coriolis type.
Oh, the Montressor Spaceport! I adore that movie, it was one of the first animated sci-fi films I have seen. I have always wanted a solar surf as a kid and this was one of the main sources of fascination for portable personal means of transport (hoverboards, skates, Tribes series' skis, etc.). Part of the reason why I now use a Micro scooter to get around the city :D
I know it's tiny and was only around for a few episodes but my favorite is probably midway station from SG Atlantis. It was such a cool and unique setting and every episode it was included in was fantastic.
Fun fact. Originally Deep Space 9 was supposed to be an ancient space station that had been built by an unknown race, and over the centuries, alien races who had taken up residence on it had expanded the station by constructing further attachments and structures based on their own architectural style that would clash with what was added before and after. So finally when Starfleet took control, it was a cultural eye-sore of mismatched structural sections and architecture.
To bad we don't see to much of it's interior in startrek online, but am glad they did add hyperdrives to it so it could show up for defence purposes. :)
@@Eucep With the recent remodel, it's actually MORE than is shown on the show, and it does stand up pretty well. Also the fact that you sad they added "hyperdrives" to DS9 appalls me.
Just a Little thing about good ol' Nauvoo: Tychos Docking drones were still attached, and stay attached, when it became Behemoth, probably literally to allow for any manouverabillity at all
No they salvaged the Nauvoo/Behemoth. The drones were launched by the salvage fleet. They attached to the Behemoth and flip it. They did not stay attached after it was launched from Tycho. If that is what you mean.
Fantastic list. As I am currently watching DS9 for the first time I appreciate the lack of spoilers. Also thank you for including Crescentia. Love Treasure Planet so much!!
I would add Earth Spacedock from Star Trek. The big mushroom/mace shaped one. It really gives an impressive sense of scale and the level of technology that went into building it. Also Treasure Planet is awesome. Very under rated.
As much as I loved the show B5, that moment of awe the first time I played ME1 and saw the Citadel is a cherished gaming memory among many others from that series.
You were trying to figure out what to make your next video on. I took a couple surveys on it lately and you pick the perfect topic! I didnt see this option on the surveys.
The Citadel is huge, you don't even get to see it all. After seeing all you can in the original game, you get to see different parts of it in Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 3 shows you more different parts
The station actually measures 13km in diameter and 45 kilometers in length. The Presidium Ring is 7km and the Ward arms are 43km each. And the Citadel Tower extends 3.5km then ratates 90 degrees and extends forward another 1km. So yeah. It's a massive station
My favorite space station is the Titan Station from Dead Space 2. You have multiple vertical levels with shopping districts and homes. School districts and churches close to them. Small military outpost scattered around with the large central hub near the core of Titans land mass with is also a major mining and industrial zone. Just seems very 'alive' with all that is there. Businesses, shops, ship repair yard, mining complex, church, schools, railways to travel through it, and a centralized police force. Plus I personally love the anesthetic of large natural land mass with industrial colonies building out of them. Wish we could just casually walk around it and see people interact with it, but space zombies gotta make a living too.
0:43 So guys we did it, we built a space station with a quarter of a million people on it. Two hundred and fifty thousand people, and still growing. *I hate my life*
Good list... Your point about DS9 going from hostile to home is spot on. The aesthetic, right from the opening sequence, also says "this isn't TNG" ;) Just watched an old ep where there's an incident with a Romulan WarBird... Sisko say's something like "...we've got 50 photon torpedoes targeting it..." and the Romulans respond with "I think it is time for us to leave." Yeah, station is much bigger than a ship. Oh, and my wife noticed something I missed... The day is 26 hours long, and writers did a great job consistently just sprinkling that in. The characters often refer to time periods like 26, 42, or 78 hours. A little thing, but shows some real thought and care.
Well I don't know how but here's some love for including Treasure Planet, I couldn't agree more on your point about Treasure Planet being a great introduction to Sci Fi in general, easily one of my favourite films

The Citadel is number one as it should be and I also watched Treasure Planet as a kid(verging onto a teenager at the time) as well and that sight seeing the crescent moon turning into a city was a sight of wonder especially to my child's eyes back then and I never forgot it either.
@Spacedock: there actually was a computer game of Treasure Planet, Called Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon where you got to command a fleet of lightships. Captain Amelia's been promoted to Admiral, and Jim's a captain under her. was actually a quite in-depth game with four factions in it, each with their own strengths: The Imperial Navy (best big guns), Ironclads (durable as hell), Pirates (Largest Crew and Fastest ships for boarding actions), and so on. You can find it on Steam.
you have a nice list Daniel, based upon the series and games you are familiar with - good job however as someone with a bit different if not slightly wider knowledge of sci-fi (including south korean and japanese) I wanted to be nice about it and merely put my own top 5 space stations list: (do notice that not all of these stations are south korean or japanese designs) 5: Citadel Station [System Shock] 4: PLANT [Gundam Seed] 3: Kukai Foundatation [Xenosaga] 2: Londo Bell [Gundam] 1: Dark Star [Lost Universe] I would very much appreciate if you would at least check these five stations and maybe if you have the time even post something about them. even a reply here would do thank you (others are of course welcome to comment on this if they so choose)
I love these videos, and I'd be thrilled to see more. Perhaps one for every ship class in the ideal fleet, if you're up for it. As soon as I saw Crescentia, I cheered. In my humble opinion, Treasure Planet is SUCH an underappreciated film, with such a rich universe. I'm really glad you gave it a spotlight of its own.
I've always loved the design of Earth Spacedock from Star Treks 3 and 4. Once they started just reusing it for every starbase in TNG it lost a lot of its charm, but in those original appearances it was just iconic and staggering in its scale. It's something that Yorktown in the last JJ film entirely failed to capture.
Neat list. I've seen all of them, and I appreciate your explanation for each of the choices, especially #2 & #3. Heck, I'm inclined to throw in my hat to recommend Axis from the UC Gundam franchise. It's basically an asteroid with hollowed-out centers where centrifugal gravity drums are placed for the human habitation. It was designed to exist independently in the asteroid belt in a franchise where humanity is scared to leave lunar orbit.
Man, I wish more of the space colonies from Gundam got some mainstream recognition. But I guess between the giant robot, and the fact they they are sort of utilitarian and realistic makes them less appealing. I personally never liked the citadel from ME, it makes so little sense to me, it's basically pure fantasy on the level of the crescent moon station from TP. I'd love to see something like Axis asteroid, or Aboa Qu from the UC timeline Gundam series covered a bit. The asteroid colonies always tend to stand out from the standard Oneal cylinders, often much more cobbled together.
@@BeyondDaX Not really, no. The only similarity to an Island 3 colony is that it uses rotational gravity. By that logic stanford toruses, bernal spheres and ring worlds are all the exact same thing. The citadel is structurally bullshit to start with, those huge arms aren't held in by anything other than plot device. As it stands, the mirrors for an open-type O'neill cylinder are beyond even optimistic future material strengths at a full 1G equivalent rotation, and those have cable supports. Second, for whatever reason, it's entirely open to space, but air shields, I guess, right? It's much, much more similar to the crescent from TP than any of the real-world inspired designs in UC Gundam. But it exists in a world of bullshit technology, so you kind of expect that. I mean, Minosky physics is kinda bad in terms of real science, but "element zero" blows that out of the water in terms of silly any day. I also wonder how the arms being closed kept out the defence fleet too, since as far as I can tell, the back end is still open. I can't see anything that would cover that up and prevent them from going in the back door. But ME never had the best writing, and it only got worse as the series progressed.
Avrage Trinidadian I wanted to write almost, ALMOST the exact same thing! I could even survive B5 not being number 1, but being lower than DS9!? I suddenly feel like calling on Mr Morden's associates ...

Though on a sadder note the actor who voiced HAL 9000 passed away recently. It was 1-2 days after the passing of Stan Lee.
F
Love Babylon 5, both the series, and the station. It's the best developed visualization of a O'Neil colony in SF or by space advocacy.
Ah treasure plant that was one of my favorite movies to watch while growing up along with Titan A.D
@Jope Lamp Turn off by does have a space station in it
So glad that you reminded me of Crescentia and Treasure Planet. 8 year old me is grateful.
These are indeed excellent picks but I think Star Trek Beyond: Yorktown should be a strong contender, when I first saw it on the big screen it was breathtaking.
I agree
Hazard2005 and the mushroom like Federation Space station from Star Trek III TSFS is a favorite of mine too.
USS EXETER That would be Earth Spacedock.
Didn't expect Treasure Planet to get mentioned. I'm glad it was thought because I think that's an underrated film that not enough people appreciate or even know about.
You surprise us Dan Tresure Planet i wasnt expecting that one XD i was predicting some Halo ro Star Wars there but im happy Cresentia made to the list
Amazing since the Treasure Planet PC Game actually can be compared to Battlefleet: Gothic Armada in playstyles.
Actually nowadays anime is more of a style, than a cultural phenomenon. Though most anime is still made in Japan.
I was expecting The Halo Rings and/or the Death Star(s), but seeing Treasure Planet get some love was great.
Seeing Treasure Planet receiving some love really warms my heart :)
Maybe a ship breakdown of the RLS Legacy from treasure planet next? It'd be nice to see a breakdown of something different
I love this channel so much because even when talking about franchises I don't know much, it manages to stay completely engrossing.
@Spacedock Watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes, you'll be redoing this video as soon as Iserlhorn Fortress is introduced.
Had to scroll too far to find this comment. Isherlohn, the most imposing Imperial Galactic Empire fortress.
So finally when Starfleet took control, it was a cultural eye-sore of mismatched structural sections and architecture.
and it was basically a gulag.
That would've been cool
So like Alpha Station from Valerian? That sounds EXTREMELY cool!
Great list Daniel, loved it. Was very surprised and quite happy with the callout to Treasure Planet as I always loved that movie.
That is not what i meant. Bad Wording, i suppose.
I watched Treasure Planet over and over again, its one of the coolest Sci-fi Films i have ever Seen
I always thought DSN's docking pylons should have been pointing outward to accomodate large ships.
Well it was supposed to reflect Cardassian design sensibilities. The Cardassians weren't always the most practical of people. ;)
Except for getting your 1 and 5 entries backwards this is a really good list.
I thoroughly enjoy listening to you geek out over sci-fi stuff.
Love how you put the station from treasure planet in here thought no one else likes that movie
I want to say thank you for showing the Citadel and DS9
Like! But what about 2001?
I really love Cairo station from halo two
The Citadel scene in me1 always gives me goosebumps. It is just perfect, its visuals are great as well as the soundtrack
0:43 So guys we did it, we built a space station with a quarter of a million people on it. Two hundred and fifty thousand people, and still growing.
*I hate my life*
I really love the Solyaris Space Station from the 1972 Tarkofsky movie Solyaris. It's built primarily as a research station with Spartan living cells.
5:53- the last hope against the Kardashians.., I could only hope.
Good list...
Your point about DS9 going from hostile to home is spot on. The aesthetic, right from the opening sequence, also says "this isn't TNG" ;)
Just watched an old ep where there's an incident with a Romulan WarBird...
DS9 was probably my favorite star trek series, glad it made it in this list.
Treasure planet is such a cool movie, and the genre they created is one i wanna see explored more.
Cough* Installation 4 Cough*
A massive station that holds multiple biomes and a dark secret. It is both a universal archive and a doomsday device.
Did not expect Treasure Planet, and it makes me happy to see it here.
I wouldn't mind living on a station like DS9 or the Citadel.
Well I don't know how but here's some love for including Treasure Planet, I couldn't agree more on your point about Treasure Planet being a great introduction to Sci Fi in general, easily one of my favourite films
Phalanx of the Imperial Fists Legion
Raptorus Rex of the Fire Hawks Chapter
Kronos Star Fort of the White Consuls Chapter
Broadsword Station of the Grey Knights Chapter
Midway Station from Star Gate: Atlantis
Hell's Iris of the Red Corsairs Chaos Marines Warband
Eh, they are kinda meh as far as space stations go
Phalanx is the only one worthy of note.
Daimon X Instead of midway I would consider Atlantis itself a decently large space station (even though most of the time its grounded)
I am Commander Shepard and this is my favorite UA-cam channel on the Citadel
Is it sad that I recognise B5 instantly from its silhouette in the thumbnail?
no
yeah it is. need a tissue?
It is not.
Not at all.
It was the only reason I clicked the thumbnail. Too bad some of the other entries on the list were so weak.
Well you will just have to wait for "Babylon 6." Mankind's last best hope for war :D
7:05 I legit started hearing the music in that scene in my head from watching that
Hey Daniel, is Treasure Planet your first Disney movie?
The crescentia reveal was the best scene from the best movie of my child hood, thank you.
Spacedock from Star Trek ironically absent in Spacedock's list of the best space docks... ;)
The Citadel is number one as it should be and I also watched Treasure Planet as a kid(verging onto a teenager at the time) as well and that sight seeing the crescent moon turning into a city was a sight of wonder especially to my child's eyes back then and I never forgot it either.
Star Wars?
-Death Star 1
-Death Star 2
-Center Point Station
-Sinkhole Station
-The Tarkin
-Goland Platforms
@Spacedock: there actually was a computer game of Treasure Planet, Called Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon where you got to command a fleet of lightships. Captain Amelia's been promoted to Admiral, and Jim's a captain under her.
was actually a quite in-depth game with four factions in it, each with their own strengths: The Imperial Navy (best big guns), Ironclads (durable as hell), Pirates (Largest Crew and Fastest ships for boarding actions), and so on.
You can find it on Steam.
you have a nice list Daniel, based upon the series and games you are familiar with - good job
however as someone with a bit different if not slightly wider knowledge of sci-fi (including south korean and japanese) I wanted to be nice about it and merely put my own top 5 space stations list:
(do notice that not all of these stations are south korean or japanese designs)
5: Citadel Station [System Shock]
4: PLANT [Gundam Seed]
3: Kukai Foundatation [Xenosaga]
2: Londo Bell [Gundam]
1: Dark Star [Lost Universe]
I would very much appreciate if you would at least check these five stations and maybe if you have the time even post something about them.
even a reply here would do
thank you
(others are of course welcome to comment on this if they so choose)
I love these videos, and I'd be thrilled to see more. Perhaps one for every ship class in the ideal fleet, if you're up for it.
As soon as I saw Crescentia, I cheered. In my humble opinion, Treasure Planet is SUCH an underappreciated film, with such a rich universe. I'm really glad you gave it a spotlight of its own.
What about the Phalanx from warhammer 40k?
That thing is more like a giant space ship.
Thanks for the recommendation of Treasure Planet. I finally watched it and it was superb!
would have put Babylon 5 on top.. but then being my favorite Sci-Fi show EVER i guess im kind of biased
You made me so happy when you brought up Crescentia station!
One of the best movies ever made.
Agreed, the megashroom ESD is such an iconic design.
Top 5 has so little space for space stations or spacedocks. It should have been included as honorable mention.
Agreed. It's my favorite one. When I take over the world I plan to build one at Lagrange point L1
i agree with you about babylon 5. it is one of the best stations out there. i do love it.
6:40-8:29 *THIS*
No Phalanx? The inquisition will hear of this heretic! But also great list. Treasure Planet was the real treasure all along.
3:15 I had just thought of this like 2 hours ago, putting the expanse on my must watch list.
The Citadel are basically a modified 'bloom' version of the colonies from the UC timeline
@@BeyondDaX
Not really, no.
Two of my favorite space stations!!! B5 and ds9, love both shows and space stations.
But, do they have any toilets?
They do. They even have bathrooms for oxygen and non oxygen breathers.
@@michaellewis1545 Don't the Vorlons breathe methane? I believe B5 has an entire methane section.
if babylon 5 isnt no. 1, I riot...
(Babylon 5 is in fifth place)
I riot
K
Avrage Trinidadian
I wanted to write almost, ALMOST the exact same thing!
I could even survive B5 not being number 1, but being lower than DS9!?
I suddenly feel like calling on Mr Morden's associates ...
@@MaiAolei What do you want?
@@MaiAolei Mr Mordens Associates would get bitch smacked by the Jem Hadar
@@triptrip8353 Even pretending that were true, how does that influence the fact that B5 is way better in every respect (as a story, as a location, by its appearance) than DS9?
Thank you so much for mentioning Crescentia from the Treasure Planet ...all you´ve said about the film, i can completely go along with becaus it means the same to me ... it´s one of my All-Time-Favorites wich sadly, it seems, a lot of people have forgotten about it
