I am VERY interested in the story he said was the original idea behind the Killjoy comics with the teens who shape reality by tapping into their trauma...
Yes, same!! I'm also curious where that falls between the old Mike Milligram idea and what it eventually became. Also, like, how literally does he mean about the shaping reality thing, on a scale from influencing the world around them to actual magical powers? Very intriguing. I do love the Killjoy universe :)

Don't know if Gerard will read this but if so, thanks for the awesome comics and music over the years. Wanted to share when I was teaching English in Japan I gave one of my students a copy of Welcome to the Black Parade album for nailing an English Speech contest. Thanks for being on!
Great interview, I think it’s interesting because I’m a fan of his comics, and my kids are fans of MCR. And they like his comics too now, but they didn’t know he made them until I showed them. I like seeing what’s in people spaces and noticed he has a Freewrite device, one of those distraction free tools. Kind of curious if he actually uses it. Almost think he might since he started writing with actual typewriters. I can’t seem to write anything with my computer, there’s just too many distractions. So, I have some of those Alphasmart Neo’s that I can write with.
goddamn he’s one interesting, smart, and beautiful person. i love hearing him talk about anything. i love how passionate he is about everything he does
I've actually been a fan of MCR for several years now but I finally decided I wanna try to get into comics, last week it just hit me...inspired by Gerard of course but Idk, I really got this feeling suddenly that this is a thing I wanna truly dive into. I just turned 27 last week also, and I don't know If is kinda late to get into this but it feels right, so, I just bought my first 3 comics (including Kill your boyfriend, which I've heard Gerard recommend before) and I'm reaaally excited to see where this takes me creatively, although I work in post production and video editing, but I'm sure I can find great visual inspiration. This was a great interview and it feels like a confirmation that this is a great time to start, so thanks for this!
It's never too late! Gerard's comics are really great, especially Doom Patrol and Umbrella Academy. Some of the books he mentions are not 'beginner' comics - Faust especially. It's a great comic but super violent and super sexual.
I just turn 20 years old and wanna dive in comic making too. I really don't know where to start actually but maybe you want to share some ideas or work on something together? My email is aliceigins@gmail.com 😊
Dude it's never too late to start 🙌 I used to draw paint etc before I had kids.. Once they came along all my drive went out the window 🤣but now there older and I'm stuck at home I've.. Got out the canvas paints and yep probably missed out on 6 years of artistic development! But now am not looking back so grab it by the balls and throw yourself into the magic of comic art etc it's mighty fun 💚💚
Im in the same boat! I turn 27 this year and I just picked up The Fabulous Killjoys California library edition. I might shoot for Watchmen next? TBD. Hope you’re enjoying !
i get what he’s saying about the whole marching band thing, lots of kids in band think if you don’t listen to crazy complicated material, it’s not good. i’m in band, but the friends i stick with listen to around the same music as me. mcr, misfits, panic!, smashing pumpkins, etc. but on top of that i listen to jazz, classical music, classic rock. some people just have very close minded opinions on what makes music good and just it being complicated shouldn’t be it.
Wow you and you're friends have good taste.... it's already something if I find someone that knows the name of a band that isn't from the pop industry or rap😥
This is awesome. We had the best time working on Cave Carson together. Great interview guys. I've got some Cave Carson art process on my channel, one set to Gerards amazing voice for a song he wrote about Cave. Well done!
Have never read Cave Carson but looking forward to picking it up. I just saw some of the art and am blown away. The covers are so trippy. Great work man. Big fan. I love that comic pros watch this channel.
This was really refreshing! I feel like in other interviews about his comics he was always a little quieter, and it's nice to see him light up and talk about his history with art! It makes me want to keep trying to working on my old comic ideas haha
Lovely work, and some incredible insights from Gerard. I'm so proud of how far he's come. Oh what would I give to meet him. He's such an intelligent individual. I'd really like to have a conversation with him, given the opportunity. To put it one way, Gerard saved my life, and for that I'll always be grateful. We love you, Gee. 🖤 Xoxo.
I'm so happy to hear the whole story from the source, because (sadly) I am not into comics at all and therefore know less then nothing, but always wanted to know what's the deal with them and understand how this kind of creating works. The interviewers are so good, I have to say, asking all the right questions and providing the nice comfortable mood for the conversation. Seeing Gerard alive and thriving talking about his passions is great, noticing how thoughtful and willing he is with the interview is even better. This man is really not fucking around. So I would normally never watch an hour video on UA-cam, but I don’t regret this. Honestly, just brought me joy. It’s been so long since I’ve seen content with Gee. He seemed a lot happy here than we’ve seen in the past few years. I’m so glad people are still listening to his music and mostly I’m just glad he’s doing good. I know some mcr stuff was apparently cringey, but I honestly believe it changed my life. Listening to their music was one of the only things that made me happy as a kid/teen. Nobody’s gonna notice this comment, but the video really made me smile so I just wanted to say that.

Man, the comments on this video are pretty amazing. So, first off, the shoot interviews continue being the shit. Such a great, varied and talented roster Jim and Ed are interviewing. Very educational and inspiring, for pros, for creatives and even for laypeople like me. I have read The first two volumes of Umbrella Academy and was very surprised at how much I liked it. High quality stuff. So coming into this interview, I knew that Gerard was legit (if he wasn't Ed wouldn't have talked to him). Still, did not know that the dude is so into comics, that comics were his goal; that the music was his side gig. That's mind blowing. I'm very sad that I did not pick up any of the Young Animal imprint (was not reading/buying comics at the time) and even more so that that imprint is no more. But looking over at the titles and the creatives involved, wow! The whole line is stacked with talent. can't wait to pick these books up. Keep up the great work!
