As a lady golfer struggling to understand the down swing and followthrough, Eric’s instruction and explanation gave me the insight why and how , thank you !
Glad to hear this one was helpful!👊
No joke, I’m a golf professional that has been teaching for decades and I must tell you this guy is seriously a spectacular teacher. I have watched many of his videos and he is truly exceptional. Outstanding teacher. Obviously knowledge is critical but he is able to easily create images easily understandable. Very very good.
Thank you for your kind words and support, Brad!
Eric is my new favorite teacher online!
Just picked up a Mevo to get some data and linked to my IPad actual video for the first time. Looking forward to next season and really becoming a consistently solid ball striker with help from videos like this.
Also, my 18 year old son is just picking up the game. He has been playing Basketball year round since he was 10 and we will be using your videos on the range from day one. I love that he’ll come in with no bad habits too.
Hope you all have a blessed day!
Appreciate the support Ben! I wish you guys great golfing ahead!
Awesome lesson. That is precisely what I needed right now. I can achieve this when I think of setting the club and then using the body to get the club to hit the ball. Quite often we try to swing the club to the ball but actually, it works better when we form a man/club relationship that we are going to manipulate to hit the ball.
Happy this one helped, Phil! Appreciate you watching!
First time finding you, I actually understood what you were saying which isn’t always easy. Thank you, just subscribed !
Appreciate ya!
Best explanation of what’s going on - how the pros all swing and get to proper impact and compression. Thank you thank you!
Appreciate it Jay!
This is what I have been trying to fix lately. Early extension. My arms get ahead of my body sometimes. Explaining that impact position in such great detail is so beneficial to visualize it. This is the one thing I am going to keep in mind before every strike. Having too many thoughts will mess up the swing, as I have experienced. You are a great trainer, Eric. Great video!
Thanks John! Appreciate the kind words---hope this helps!
Brilliant! I struggle with early extension and I do lose spine angle and stand up. It was a light bulb moment when you said that if you raise your head at impact, you must flip the club, if you want to hit the ball. Off to the range tomorrow. Thanks.
Thanks, Scott! hope this helps ya!
Pure gold, Eric. Simulating impact position is something very few of us hackers do. I've enjoyed watching your videos these past few months (can't believe I hadn't subscribed until just now) particularly because you talk a lot of what Mike Malaska does (yes, saw the segments you did with him). Taking lessons now with my local pro and he also hits on a lot of Malaska topics. Hmm, sensing a trend among the few golf voices I listen to. Progress! Thanks man, keep 'em coming.
Appreciate it Mark! Love it
Love this. I’ve just recently been told by my pro to just get the trail shoulder down, get that trail elbow in nice and tight, crunch those obliques and rotate away. After a few buckets on the DR my back was hurting, my obliques were screaming and my hamstrings were about to tear off the bone but boy I was hitting them better than ever.
However when things go to poop on course then I go back to old habits. Just means I need more time on the DR to make this my default swing.
My physio reckons it’s the best thing I’ve done to my golf for years!
👊👊
Thanks for being here with us, Mick! Hope this one serves your game well!
Geez!!! I would die for your swing!!!! It looks so effortless Eric. Another great video
Thanks Lee!
Not for nothin', but I reckon it's rather hard to swing, effortlessly or otherwise, if your dead 😉
“Golf ain’t simple” true.
“The details matter” yup
I really like this video. Thank you.
Thank you :)
Great tutorial Eric, keep them coming!
Thanks, Zuke!
Dude! This was perfect. Thank you, Eric...again.
Thanks Peter :) Our pleasure!
Great video Eric. This move is especially evident to me in Fleetwood and Hovland (and Cogorno,of course 😊).
Thank you! 100% those are good models for this
Love it great drill as always!
Thanks, Ben!
"Golf ain't simple!!!" Lol... Great video man.
:)
this is very interesting! I've been trying to figure out reasons why I was blocking the ball. My self diagnosis was that I was hip sliding on the down swing which caused me to tilt my left shoulder up and from there i feel stuck and can't turn my body and right shoulder around properly. What seems to work so far, but you might destroy my theory, is thinking back of right shoulder pointing at where the ball was after impact. seems to help my rotation and also achieve what you described here. Great stuff!
Thanks, Mike!
I teach from impact position first then from address. Impact position is everything.
I like it
No one explains better how to compress of the ball. Thank you so much.
Thanks Andrea!
Probably the reason why I tend to, at times, hit it slightly towards the toe and can’t figure out why.
Shoulder down, great casual swing thought for a good cover.
Thanks
Hope it serves you well Nelson!
According to another video, a measurement of 500 pros produced results with very similar shoulder angles. About 40 degree tilt in the backswing (left side bend) and 55 degrees when the chest is pointed directly at the target in the follow through. When I hit these numbers the backswing felt somewhat different but the downswing felt radically different. The interesting result was the things I got for free focusing on more side bend. On longer clubs I tend to get a little steep and lose hip depth. Transitioning with more side bend (backswing and downswing) automatically shallowed my club and retained my hip depth. Thanks for the video Eric! You reinforced what I was working on which I needed.
Our pleasure, Jeff! Happy this one helped!
Undeniably accurate and great explanation.
Thank you :)
좋은 영상과 레슨 잘 배우고 갑니다

Thank you! Hope it serves you well!
crazy how after 26yrs i am still learning. mm5:50-6:00+-!!! wow
the biggest difference this days, im not the learning to swing. I am learning the "why". that has been my conscious effort.
Not sure who is the greatest You, Mike Malaska, Clay Ballard or AMG.
if you guys did a collab, no one on the planet could touch you.
Appreciate your support my friend! Thanks for being here with us!!
Very good Eric, thanks for video.
Appreciate it Harry!
Thanks, great video!
Thanks, Jaime!
Do we do the 5min drill with the club and bending forward at the hips to horizontal as is shown in the video thumbnail?
Or do we use our hands and stay in normal golf stance?
Cheers Tom
Normal golf stance.....the thumbnail was exaggerated to increase interest :) Have to play the game with youtube :)
Love this but when I do it, I tend to hold on to the release to ensure the right arm keeps bent, which means it’s slower club speed.
Starting short and slow (and using video feedback) is the best way to change your movement patterns. I wouldn't worry about the club head speed just yet. Start slow and work your way up. You'll get it! :)
Appreciate you watching the channel!
Thanks for the good vid! Subscribed.
Is this also the same for every club including the driver?
Thanks Tone!
Driver a bit different......driver vs iron specific differences here:

Another great video Eric!
Thanks Kenny!
A very good video...just the right amount of repetition to let your points sink in. I particularly liked your explanation of the importance of the bent right arm and also lowering the right shoulder coming into impact while not just covering the ball, but turning the chest toward the target.
Thank you Paul! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Awesome video tips
Thanks Lenard!
Great video, will try this out as its definitely an issue for me!
Thanks Tony---hope it helps!
Definitely will try this drill in the driving range next time. This is the part of my swing which need to be fixed.
Hope it serves you well
Excellent video. As someone in their 60's, have lost a little distance and being able to compress the ball better will be a great help. How does this affect the driver swing?
Thanks!
Hey George! Some differences with driver
since driver on a tee and and we want to hit up......head more back with driver and chest less down

@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric. I applied this lesson to my range session yesterday. Results...best range session ever, no exaggeration.
When I'm not golfing I'm training or competing in triathlons, so I have pretty strong legs, glutes and core. But, for whatever reasons, I have neglected to incorporate them fully in my swing. Oh, I'll walk 18 on the hilliest courses around, no problem...all the while early extending on 75% of my shots during the round! Thanks for these clear and concise tips. Will definitely work on them this winter, getting them ingrained without reinforcing bad habits on the course.
Our pleasure! Hope they serve your game well!
Key to this lesson is the proper backswing including hand/club plane. If club goes to far back during takeaway, you cannot get your trail shoulder as you're saying.
👊Thanks so much for watching!
I wonder if you can cover this I see this so much and golfers hitting the ball thin and then adding length to the shaft or them hitting a longer club they hit the ball cleaner not thin the farther forward press the thinner the shot do golfers need longer clubs?
Its one option....or....maybe it would make them stand up even more....
I've found best success fixing the root cause directly
You are the best.
Thanks, Ken!
Nice lesson Eric!
Thank you, John!
I was just talking and practicing trying to stay down on the ball thru impact and I open my phone and ✨this video is the first one on my YT. I swear my phone is watching and listening to me 🙊
:) Thank you for watching the channel!
Hello, when I try and do this I lose solid contact and seem to slap the ball to the right?
I am trying to keep rotation going, with my hands going through and to the left, but trying to hold onto the wrist angles is the problem I think as not releasing the wrist maybe…..I am keeping my right elbow tucked in……..and turning through so must be doing something wrong……when should you release the wrist angles when doing this drill?
Pip Dennis
Likely need to learn to close the club face SOONER (earlier) with those feels
Would split hand grip drill help this ? It seems to help me keep my right shoulder down, now I have just got to compress the ball more by stop hanging back with my weight !
Hey Fraser!
That's awesome if that drill is helping you feel the shoulder movement! I would look to utilize the drill in this video to help as well👊

You’re the Professor!
:)
Notice your trail leg is down at impact. Is this important for early extenders? Could you do a video on this please.
Sure thing.....detailed info on trail leg here:

Very good video
Thanks Peter!
Eric is right- this is the basic fundamental to solid ball striking. If you have been throwing your hands and arms at the ball from the top (like me) this will feel very constricted and "slower". This is because the feel of flinging the hands and arms from the top "feels" fast. It's not. One caveat here however--doing this may expose flaws in the backswing. For example, if one (again like me:) sucks the club inside or rolls the forearms over and gets the handle outside, it is very hard (impossible even) to get that right side bend happening. Here's another feel that works for me. If you played hockey, it feels like a slapshot where the stick/club comes into the puck/ball at a 45 degree angle with the right side coming down and through. I used to do this intuitively playing youth hockey. The other thing I have/had to do is get to the delivery position in front of a mirror and say "how do I get to the ball without throwing my hands?" The answer? Watch this video :)
:) Thank you for watching my friend!
Hi Eric, does this work the same with the driver? Every time i try it with driver I feel like i block myself out and the ball flies out the the right and lacks power. Doesn't feel like i can properly release the club with driver when i try this method.
Hey Elliot!
Some differences with driver. Since driver is on a tee and and we want to hit up...head more back and chest less down with driver.
More details here!
ua-cam.com/video/TJtx-qVSgVU/v-deo.html
Pete Cowan says something similar. You dont need a club to get better. You just need to teach your body how things feel.
Pete’s lead arm drill changed my game. Do it for 15 mins a day, get the feel for loading the shoulders.
Great coach!
Muscle memory
Not just trail shoulder down and forward but also lead shoulder down and out.
For sure
Reasons that might cause not being able to stay down question hamstrings are the parts of the body if this is the case should clubs be made longer for these people with this problem
Answered on your other comment...
What’s the cure for when I try this and seem to hit it soo fat all the time. Going too low or not turning enough?
Hey Len...
Likely
1. Not turning enough
2. Not bending trail arm/wrist enough
Those shots sounded compressed and pure
Thanks Tony----was striking these nicely!
Is this the same for driver swing?
Hey Maarten!
Some differences with driver. Since driver is on a tee and and we want to hit up...head more back and chest less down with driver👍

This guys channel reminds me of the Taco Bell menu. Same ingredients, different presentations.
Ill take it :)
@@CogornoGolf i love taco bell. Lol
Does that mean the left shoulder for a right handed is turning up and backward?
Thats part of it yup
Although your description of the correct impact positions-bent right arm, bent right wrist , lower right shoulder , relatively steady spine angle and a general lowering of the body are correct, I would disagree with you regarding how the bent right arm and lower right shoulder are achieved .
If your right elbow is behind the seam of your shirt at the top or the right elbow starts straight down in transition , it will be very difficult to impossible for you to get your right elbow on and in front of your right hip at impact . Another way of stating this is a right elbow that is out of position going down will prevent your trail shoulder from lowering sufficiently . So the emphasis should be on the right elbow move in early transition and lowering the right shoulder will happen much more easily .
This is a not a general criticism of your points , since your video explanations are the best on the internet .
Thanks for your feedback/perspective Dave!
Why are we assuming its in the position @ the top in the first place?
Fully agreed it needs to get in front to start down
Two Hall of Fame exceptions to this rule are Fuzzy Zoeller and Julius Boros. Both of these players rose UP through their swing. You can check out a good example of Fuzzy at "Over the Top Miracle Swing FUZZY ZOELLER Masters Champion" on UA-cam. I doubt they would be the players they were if they were forced to go down after it. Great content nonetheless Eric. Thanks for all you do.
Appreciate your feedback! Thanks so much for watching!
Remaining in posture is my biggest challenge
Same for lots of us Dan---want to fix any earlier issues that may cause it as well as directly working to fix it
One thing that make golf so hard is this, your setup position is not your impact position. golfer has to lean their shaft to get the best out of their club.....something that is just not natural for most of us. And as most golf instructor will tell us to relax your right arm and use your left arm....while most of us are right handed. It took me nearly a year to bring my score down to sub 90, I felt that I could do better if I start with so-call left handed club...As a engineer, I felt we been fool around from the first place....:) ok, stop complaining now, I have a golf game to catch with my friend.
:)
I've been working on this lately, for me, I feel like I'm trying to hit the ball with my right shoulder, left for lefties. I have been compressing the ball so much better and have gained yardage with less effort, crazy right?
I like that feel.....lots of golfers should feel that Javier!
Eric - so many things in golf are counter intuitive. Such is the case with lowering your position at impact. I don’t doubt this is the best way to achieve good compression. That said, by lowering our trail shoulder and increasing the bend in our trail arm and wrist, we are seemingly shortening the radius of the circle that the club head transcribes around our body. Wouldn’t that shortening of the swing radius reduce clubhead speed?
Hey John!
Good question. No....because......even though the arc is shorter.....through impact to few feet past impact......it is LENGTHENING.
So the trail arm wrist are bent (radius shorter).....but......they are in the PROCESS of straightening.....until fully straight past impact
Thats where the speed comes from......not from the radius being longer.......but GOING FROM......SHORT TO LONG.
I would think of it like this:
ua-cam.com/video/fV6q0T9SloU/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf Its a very interesting piece of physics. I knew the answer intuitively, but seeing the clubhead move to the left when you held it out horizontally, and increased shaft lean, led to the question. I've been working with my Pro on shaft lean and I've managed to increase my avg carry by almost 20 yards with my 7i...so I know what you're saying is the truth as I've expereinced both lowering my trail shoulder and increasing the shaft lean/right wrist angle at impact. Keep up the great content and thank you for being so accessible to the community. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Hey Eric ever thought about sponsoring yourself and getting out on tour
Not good enough Charles :)
@@CogornoGolf Oh Eric, there was a moment in your life you had the dream, you thought you could… But you walked away from it. Too frustrating, and you looked around. You’re still a young man. With great communication skills and a knack for business. Which will always be there.. But you do have a body that works. You’re looking for the answers in the wrong place which is the difference between you and a tour pro.
Eric crushes the teaching! Odd how Rick Shiels taught one thing and now, in his new series, his coach is teaching Rick to do the opposite of what Rick taught others. Yeesh.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching!
Hey, I know you have taken a lesson with Malaska. He’s a stickler on this. That alignment club in front of your ball needs to be rolled over so the cavity back is laying on the ground. Your current setup could lead to the ball bouncing back at you.
Thanks, Edu!
Alex Noren-esque.
Similar but he’s an extreme example
Love his ball striking ability!
Where is shown the "Do this for 5 minutes" drill ? 🤔😤
Do the FEELS for 5 minutes :)
ITs just a thumbnail....gotta play the game with youtube to get you to watch :)
💴 💵💵💵💵💵💵
Thanks Garry!
is that not giving you back pain and an invite into spine-surgery?? Sorry-no offense.
Hey Markus!
No :)
These are anatomical movements (lateral flexion of the spine for example) that we do all of the time as we go about our day to day life. There is no inherent risk of injury performing lateral flexion👍
Thanks for watching!
“Compression” is such a silly term. It does not describe anything. The ball is compressed even in a bad shot.
Compression in golf is referred to hitting the ball in the center of the clubface .
@@davecohn6407 One, no it’s not. Two, that again makes no distinction as far as correct swing.
Hey James!
Sorry if that term doesn't work here.
Compression would be a different term or another name for "Smash Factor"
This would be ball speed divided by club speed......which would indicate how well we hit the ball or "compressed" the ball against the club head.
All the best
Eric needs to do a video on the Gem training aid. It looks pretty interesting.
Lots of good feedback so far.
Will let you know if I test it out!👍
