- Hi friends! Decided to go back to Guryong village after 6 months and see the situation there during winter.
Guryong or Guryong Village (구룡마을) is an illegal encampment (commonly called a shantytown) on private land in Seoul, South Korea, on the edge of the affluent southside district of Dogok-dong, Gangnam District from which it is separated by a six-lane motorway.
It was first created in 1988 by squatters evicted from houses in other low-income areas demolished during the city's rapid development prior to the 1988 Olympic Games, and who came to this area as their last refuge. Since at least 2011, there have been plans for re-purposing the area and relocating the residents, though little progress has been made due to disagreements between officials on the best plan of action. Due to unsafe construction, the village has been affected by a number of fire accidents. The Gangnam government is planning to redevelop the area with new apartment for 7,671 people by 2025. Many of the remaining residents are seniors, some earning less than $10 a day.

Obrigada por mostrar um lado da Coréia do Sul que poucos conhecem
Beijos do 🇧🇷
My pleasure Amanda! Cheers!
Guryong Village is a place where land prices are high. Many residents left another region with Compensation received through negotiations with the government.
There are quite a few expensive luxury cars here. In fact, the land price of this village is high because the redevelopment is scheduled and the rich people often mix with the poor because of memories of the old place.
i came from Rio de Janeiro Brazil and i love seoul cities beautiful
I swear this poor area is cleaner than the "so-called" rich area in my country.
Fantastic villages view. Interesting and beautiful captions 😀 thanks for the share 😀
Thanks!
Such an amazing and interesting Walk today! Great sharing...
Thanks friend!
Great video of the rarely filmed areas, but I do swear I saw this exact one months ago.
I made one last summer.
@@SeoulStroll ah thanks. Wonders what wandering through there in a snow storm would look like. It probably came up as a recommended video late last year as I only recently discovered your channel via that troublesome UA-cam algorithm. Buying a 4k TV is what got me into these videos.
@@concernednewfie I wanted to go there when there is snow but in Seoul it happens very rarely and the snow melts shortly after.
@@concernednewfie Yeah, with the right equipement (camera, lighting) those videos can look fantastic in 4K).
I love your videos 💖 greetings from Chile
Thanks my friend! Love Chile! 👍❤️
The only "cheap" place to live in Gangnam. It is incredible that you have to be a millionaire to buy a house, the truth is Korea I love it but of course they have a serious problem especially in Seoul.
Y yo creyendo que en Corea del Sur todos eran ricos ...y guapos como los bts ...que triste que en todos lados haya gente humilde ...el progreso debería ser para todos y no solo para algunos ...
My heart breaks that people live like this 😥 even the cats look miserable!
This was another similar area but very far in the North East of Seoul:

Hmmm….You guys are so naive. some poeple who live in this area are not the poor. That village estimated is really high because of its location so that some people lives to get compensation. Nowdays only a few are native. If any plans for restructure in this area are announced, its estimates will billion dallars.
so many korean people don’t think they are really poor…
If you think I’m lying, search “구룡마을”.
Could be… I looked it up on Wikipedia and they say otherwise but wiki is sometimes wrong about stuff. But anyway, the whole area is a slum and most people living there are old.
@@SeoulStroll Because this area is prohibited from restructuring and making building due to greanbelt Law which limit to expand urbanization and protect forest
If you want to see real slum in Seoul, go to 104 village (Nowon-gu) or yeongdeungpo-gu slum.
Good Night!!!" SEOUL STROLL " How are you??? I just loved this video. You showed me a place I never knew existed. On the other hand, I am sad to know that people live in these conditions. I hope the South Korean government gives these people better living conditions. Have a great Thursday. Sergio São Paulo Brazil
Thanks for watching Oigres. I have a similar video of that place that I shot last summer too.
Wonderful video my friend. Thumbs up 👍🏻 See you around
Thank you 👍
Nobody? Really?
nice cars there, some must just choose to live there. and are not dirt poor.
But where are the people???why is so silent??
It’s winter and it was cold that day. People just stay inside. Also, the vast majority of people living there are elderly.
How can you tell which ones are being lived in?
The places that have a red "X" on the door are vacant.
Where are the people?
They are all inside their home. I was cold that day.
Maybe a bit of an ignorant question but I saw that there is clearly a system of numbering the houses (considering the spray paint) but are these houses actually registered as such? Or are they just registered as land property? They clearly do not adhere to official safety regulations etc so I am wondering whether they are actually considered housing by the municipality.
Also, if I may ask, what time did you visit this village? Because it seems eerily deserted at this time of day!
It’s not considered legal by the municipality. The red paint on the door means that the place is empty and no one lives there.
It was near the end of the day. I think I wrote the time in the description, was somewhere around 4pm. You can hear some noise coming from houses there, people are just inside cause it is cold. Also, the majority of people living there are senior citizens.
I don’t see heat coming out anywhere….??
You got threw it alright during the afternoon not at night . I know it said seniors but there may be some younger ones there to because of circumstances?. Was waiting for someone to pop out and ask what your doing? I did hear some voices near the end on my speaker. No 🐱 or 🐕??? 📸🇰🇷
Yeah no idea if there are young people there. Probably!?! But I hope the get a decent life and education if there are kids.
Is it safe for woman to sightseing alone there?
yes, there is no worries.
Now let me ask You, people living there are korean or immigrants? Or there are both?
Only Koreans
Thanks, i ask you because people use to think that in developed countries in poor neighborhoods only live imnigrants or people of an ethnic minority (like the blacks in the us or the gipsies in spain) and i see not always is like that
