My 14yo daughter has starting her manual control photography journey with my old nex-5n from 2012. That was such a great camera at the time. Giving her as many manual lenses as I can, but nothing wide so far. She'd love this one.

i love my 5n. i don’t use it much anymore, in favor of more modern models, but it started my collection with my a5100 and in my opinion it is amazing for beginners and even intermediate content creators/photographers. the only complaint i ever had was the overheating during video recording issue, but my nex6 fixed that.

It seems it would be a great lens to have for large real estate. For example, looking up at the Eiffel Tower, the coliseum in Rome, a Frank Gehry structure, a major league stadium or public sculptures.

Brilliant lens! Back in the film days extreme wide angles were plagued with distortion which made them virtually unusable. At the edges of the frame the resolution was almost non-existent, it was like looking into the bottom of a milk bottle. You could find high quality extreme wide angles and you could buy one for about the cost of a house. The lack of distortion and great resolution of this lens blows my mind.

Interesting, as a city planner, I find this lens can be very useful to provide context to a scene. It would be helpful to visualize the environment. This is similar to an architectural use, but with a different audience. The most interesting point you made was that you kept it wide open most of the time. Stopping down might increase sharpness, but it seems unnecessary. Good video.
I think I will try it out.

About 6 months ago I was looking for a good budget rectilinear lens but didn’t find much. Now all of a sudden we have three similar priced and similar construction 9mm rectilinear lenses.
$479 is a bit steep though considering it’s niche use case. A sale price of $379 would make it a solid buy.
Great video by the way! Short and to the point with no fluff!

I have this lens, and what I use it for is the inside of very tight spaces like interior shots of lighthouses. I am a lighthouse enthusiast, so when I'm shooting interiors, of say, a lantern room, this lens is perfect. Another thing I find it very useful for, is imagine that there is a scene that you want to photograph, but you just can't back away to fit everything in. This happened just the other day as I was photographing our town common decorated for the holidays. There is a Santa's workshop that is almost at the sidewalk. A 24mm just won't do because you would be in traffic trying to back up far enough. Not so with this 9mm. You can be right on top of a subject and still fit everything in the frame. I know it isn't for everyone, but I am a huge fan of anything extreme or different.

A lens like that is for novelty shots. If you shoot it every day in any capacity, you will get tired of it. But for fun and interesting special effects, it can be a blast on a short term basis. Similarly, I have an infrared converted camera. It makes fun, surrealistic pictures. But if you overdo it, you will get sick of them. The way I like to use an extremely wide lens (I have a full frame 14mm f2.8), is to get very close to my subject (near the minimum focusing distance). The distortion of fading back into the distance makes the image somewhat ghostly and memorable (a combination of infrared and ultra-wide is also very interesting). It is not for up close portraits of people, unless you want to have everyone emulate Pinocchio. There are some instances where they are a good fit for a landscape image. A fisheye lens is really less useful than a rectilinear lens, because people are not used to round images and the distortion near the edges is very extreme. Don't send me the lens, I don't need it. I only have APS-C for Sony anyway, and that would be a waste of that lens.

  • @DigiDriftZone
    @DigiDriftZone 6 місяців тому +2

f5.6 is a good choice as it gives you similar light gathering to Fuji's f/3.5 8mm APS-C lens (just slightly worse) while giving you a much wider field of view of 6mm APS-C equivalent, crazy!

I have used a Samyang 8mm on my A6500 and I love it. I find it much more useful that I expected to. I did buy it for indoor architectural photography (I like photographing churches and cathedrals) but it gets used outdoors in landscape settings too. You need to think a little carefully about composition and make sure you have some good foreground interest. I do like not having to think too much (or at all) about focus.
The 8mm (12mm full frame equivalent) has a field of view of 180° and I do have to make sure I don't get my feet in shot so I can't imagine what a 9mm full frame lens is like 😀 It is also f2.8 (I guess possible because it is for APS-C) which makes it better in lower light.
I would definitely recommend at least considering this 8mm if an APS-C ultra-wide is what you're looking for,,,

Another potential use would be to use this on a higher resolution sensor to shoot timelapses. Amazing to see how many interesting full frame lenses are being developed these days. Cheers!

I am headed to Rome in January and I am looking for a full frame wide angle lens. Thanks for another terrific video!

I’m surprised how clear this is on the edges. It would be fun to do some time lapse with that lens. ✌️

I think it could be a fun lens to walk around town doing time lapse with.
