There might be a few purists out there who insist that only the original frame is acceptable, but I seriously doubt they're a large number. Buying a Cobra replica is about the appearance, and the performance, and a stronger chassis with a wider range of engines, that doesn't affect the looks of the car, gives you that.
If Carrol Shelby was building Cobras today, he wouldn't be using the chassis from the 60s. He'd use the best technology available to him.

I really love the look of the hardtop. I’m a sucker for coupes but also like roadsters. In profile, the car looks a bit like a grown up Triumph GT6 which, in my opinion, is one of the prettiest cars to come out of England. Well done!

I've been saving for the 65 Coupe as a retirement project. But the hardtop Cobra is definitely something I'll consider now that I've seen it.

Driving on a rainy day the hard top will be appreciated. Plus looks like you can take the top on and off for a sunny day. I have a convertible and sometimes you need to put the top up. The weather can be fickle so be prepared. The original cobras you just got wet if it rained.

That's basically a DAYTONA with an Original Cobra " Grille " . Prettier than a genuine Daytona .

I could care less about a vintage style frame in a kit car. Why wouldn’t you go for the improved rigidity and additional engine options. Just my 2 cents.

A vintage style frame option allows for people to connect to a genuine vintage vehicle, and itch their authentic nostalgia. Personally for me I’d rather build a t10 289 with bias ply tires and an under car exhaust that Shelby ran in Leman over the 427 with side pipes and modern suspension. I don’t have anything against factory fives take on modernizing it, just not my thing. Plus I want to do real vintage races.

With way more grunt you need a more stable platform that doesn't twit so you can put the power to the road & better handling because not all roads are straight some of them have things called corners.

It needs interior ventilation and side windows that go up and down manually. Otherwise going fast is just too much noise and wind imo. Maybe an insulation kit like Dynomat if it really improves comfort

I honestly see so many of these cobras that I don’t even care about them any more. I can’t tell the difference between real or fake. I remember a late comer at a car show, I didn’t even bother to get up to go look at it. I figured it was just another rebodied mustang. …I later found out that was Carol Shelby’s nephew. …it not only was probably real, but probably even ridden/driven by Carol Shelby himself!

I've owned a lot of cars, many of them sports cars. As I have grown older my priorities: safety, reliability, performance (acceleration, handling, braking), comfort. So what happens in a crash? What about the brakes? Can I rip through corners at speed? Air conditioning, seats, sound system? I really like the hardtop, over the years and living in Florida my love affair with convertibles has waned. All of these questions really boil down to the main point. Would this car be something that I would want to go on a two thousand mile trip in?

"...They've been producing affordable component cars.." I'm gonna stop you right there slick. They are more expensive and time consuming than a plethora of turn key used sports cars. At the end of the day, they are premium priced cars with very good performance, that you have to build.

Darn, I thought it was gonna be a usable shooting brake (coupe/wagon) like a BMW clownshoe. It’s just a top on a roadster - sound of sad trombones….
My dream would be a 289 Coupe replica with a usable hatchback that would fit a powerful & efficient inline 4 or 6 cylinder engine. It would actually be more of an AC Ace Coupe replica. Wouldn’t THAT be cool!?

A bad choice as that is more power than the car can really use. About 250 hp per rear tire max with about half that for most road going cars. Granted if you want to accelerate quickly while traveling at triple digit speeds, then go for it, but it is a bad idea...

The Shelby Cobra actually started out as an AC Cobra imported to the US by Shelby and tweaked by Ford/Shelby to compete with the Corvette on the race track. Shelby bought a race prepared AC Ace (6 cyl.), a complete AC Cobra (Ford 260 V8) and 4 AC Cobras without engines. He had a Ford 289 V8 he put into one of the AC Cobras and he race prepped that car. He intended to use the cars for private club racing. Ford heard about the car and took interest. Ford had Shelby become an importer of the car and bought a few for development. Ford's chassis engineers made a lot of changes and made a deal with AC to build the cars to their specs in exchange for 289 V8 engines. The 289 V8 was not previously exported to the UK and Ford had discontinued the 260 V8. AC Cobra customers had requested both Chrysler Hemi and Chevy small blocks in their new Cobras. It was determined that the Hemi was too big and heavy to fit. It is unknown how many Chevy powered Cobras AC built. The 6 cyl. engine AC had been using in the Ace had also been discontinued. Ford and AC made a deal. AC would use Ford 289 V8 engines in the Cobra. Later, Ford wanted the 427 V8 in the Cobra to compete with the 427 Corvette GS. That required significant changes to the Cobra. AC agree to make the changes if Ford would export 427 V8 engines to the UK. Done. Shelby did not want the 427 in the Cobra. It made the car very difficult to handle. It was heavy, which made the car not want to turn and the cars tended to get very loose coming out of the turns. Shelby refused to sell 427 Cobras on the street. He bowed to pressure from Ford to sell a few. Demand for the 427 Cobra in the US was so great that buyers bought AC Cobras in the UK and had them shipped to the US. Shelby sued AC for violating what Shelby said was an exclusive import license. A federal judge sided with Shelby and ordered AC to surrender all rights to the Cobra car to Shelby American. That is the short version of the history of the Shelby Cobra. Carroll Shelby had little to do with it compared to AC and Ford. Shelby ran the Cobra racing program and hired Pete Brock to design the Type 65 Coupe. The published "History" was created by Shelby and negotiated with Ford. The agreement required that Ford take down their own history of the car, which did not match the Chicken Farmer's embellished fantasy.

@@garymanis6305 The 289 is the better cobra as those handling problems of the 427 are significant. Which is why they didn't get driven much regardless if originals or replicas, that is a heavy engine and too much power...

  • @gdonham1203

It is a custom car and not a Shelby Cobra so what is the difference if it is modernized. For the money you get it the way you want. If you want the older MK4 then get that or get the MK5. They are both beautiful but they ARE NOT SHELBY COBRAs. That is not putting them down but there are only so many of the real Cobras. The real Cobras are not in most peoples price range. So if you want to look cool and go fast seems like a no brainer to get the updated MK5.
