- NCIS is one of the longest-running police procedurals of all time, and Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs has been at the center of it since it all started. For the most part, the show isn’t as much about characters and backstory as it is about the case of the week, but we have still learned a lot about Gibbs over the years. The special agent has led a life filled with a lot of tragedy, and he hasn’t always been the all-out hero people might see him as. Let’s take a look at the entire backstory of Gibbs on NCIS.

Some of y’all never watched My Other Left Foot (season 1 episode 12) and heard Gibbs himself say that he was an MP and it really shows.
it is mentioned in one episode during the first season. What defines Gibbs as a Marine is the fact that he is a scout sniper not his time as an MP.

He was a scout sniper, not an MP. There are 70 or 71 rules now with the additions and the subtraction of rule 10, "never get personally involved with a case" when Bishop found Ziva's stash building. He tossed rule 10 in his fireplace.
He actually was a (non-commissioned officer) MP for a short time before he became a scout sniper when he was at Lejeune ;-)
"Gibbs' early years in the Marine Corps were with the military police. He rose to non-commissioned officer rank and was stationed at Camp Lejeune at one point. Later, Gibbs became a Scout Sniper and saw several overseas deployments. In 1989-1990, Gibbs deployed to Panama as part of Operation Just Cause, and then in 1990-1991, he deployed to Kuwait with the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines during Operation Desert Storm."

Depending on when a man served, "scout sniper" may or may not have even been a billet. Pretty sure they were simply designated "Sniper" when organized under the STA acronym and prior (Gibbs service time maybe even corresponding to pre-STA).
Either way, it's pure Hollywood to confuse billet assignment with PMOS or even Occ Field. Marine Snipers (as well as Recon, and other assignments) are Marine Corps Infantry first and foremost.
Anyone who thinks a person enlists as a sniper (recon, etc.) should go see a recruiter. Of course you might get one to tell you what you wanna hear while signing you up as a mess specialist.
@@semperintrepidus16 Very true. But as I remember, when I talked to a Marine recruiter, all Marines are Infantry first, then whichever MOS they signed up for, mechanic, supply, etc, second.
As an Army Veteran, I know TV shows/Hollywood take poetic licence when it comes to the military. Some do better than most.
Like that short lived show Valor, which was just purely wrong. I have spoken with guys in that type of unit and they said about 10% was correct and of that 10%, 8% was weapons and equipment used.
There are now 71 rules, the last one being " Sometimes you're wrong.."

@@abbypiper4212 Odd; I just saw the one where Gibbs went to Vietnam and McGee took over as head for that time and he said there was 70 (although he lied about what it was) And at a much later time and show (after Abby leaves and Nick joins). At the end of a later show Gibbs sits down and writes a note that says #71 Sometimes you're wrong.

Pedro Hernandez was killed in Mexico, not the USA.
Also, his ex wives divorced him because he was emotionally unavailable to them. He married them because they reminded him of Shannon. I want to say it was Diane, his first ex wife, that told him that he was her "Shannon". That is how I remember it.
The narrator was saying after Gibbs came back from his deployment that's when he killed Hernandez he's not seeing when Pedro came back to the United States you were seen when Gibbs came back to the US

This was my Dad’s favorite show 😞. He died in May of Pancreatic Cancer.

This was my mom’s favorite show. She watched the reruns on USA and had seasons 1 - 10 on DVD. She died in 2015 of lung cancer so she didn’t get a chance to see Ziva come back. She also copied a list of the known rules spoken on the show. I just found it a few days ago and had a good laugh at how dedicated a fan she was.
Because NCIS is 10.00 million percent the best show on Television and no reason to do many tributes to it.

Gibbs started his marine service as a mp at paris island then went through scout sniper training when he was ressaigned to camp lajune prior to the gulf war
He was a Gunny Sgt. - An NCO. Also, a Marine is not a soldier.

I too am a marine 1968-1972. I too was a police officer then a lawyer. I too did some pretty crazy stuff while I was in Vietnam. I stole a helicopter to rescue South Vietnamese soldiers, was court martialed and put in the brig for 6 months. I would do it again if I was put in the same situation.

The Rules are not unshakable laws! He has broken #6, #10, #11, #12 several times. He broke #14 once, and even gave himself a Gibbs slap!

All the characters of NCIS are dearly loved, but Gibbs... well, I've been a Mark Harmon fan for a long time (Summer School anyone?) My mom had his picture hanging in her nursing home room along with Simon Baker. Gibbs's Rules for Life are pretty all encompassing and more people could stand to learn them. One question: If Gibbs's father is played by Ralph Waite, and Seeley Booth (from Bones) grandfather is played by the same actor, is it possible that there is a connection between Gibbs and Booth? Maybe Gibbs is Booth's uncle? Both opted to go in to the service after a troubled childhood and the similarities are uncanny. Can someone explore this relationship more?

I have always thought it would make for a very fun episode if the cast (or most of them depending on availability) from Summer School were featured in an episode of NCIS. To make it even more fun, behind the scenes, Harmon isn't told who the other actors are until shooting begins...let him figure it out. Yes, table reads, I know...those can be done by production staff with some BS excuse given to Harmon.

In regards to the MP comment, I think they were referencing him as an NCIS agent (I mean they are technically police for the military) and didn't think about the fact that there is actually military police.
MP and federal agents are not the same thing.
@@Laz4r96 yep. MPs perform a variety of functions, but primarily they are the town cops for their Base, Post, Station, etc. Base Commanding Generals are the military equivalent of town mayors (they don't command deploying combat troops)
NCIS is like the military counterpart to the FBI. To oversimplify, they take on the special, hard and sensitive cases.
And I haven't even mentioned CID, the military equivalent of city detectives (roughly).
And in addition to all that, EVERY commissioned officer in the Marine Corps is expected to perform the task of Investigating Officer for a broad variety of incidents, accidents, criminal actions, etc. particularly where high value items, serious injuries and even deaths are involved. And, btw, those duties do not require any special additional title designation; it's just part of being a Marine Officer.

I love NCIS but I wish the writers could keep the story straight.
1: When the show revealed the existence of Shannon and Kelly plus their fate at the end of season three NCIS didn't know that Pedro Hernandez was dead for sure. The hunt for him was a cold case but he was still on the wanted list. Ducky told Director Shepherd to close the case because he was certain Gibbs had hunted Hernandez down and killed him but NCIS didn't have confirmation that Hernandez was dead.
2: Why would a Marine MP, like Gibbs Macy was an MP before joining NCIS, be investigating the murder of a Mexican drug dealer that took place outside of US jurisdiction? The Mexican government believed that Hernandez was killed by another criminal so there's no reason to believe they asked the US or NCIS for help on the case. So there's no logical reason for Macy to have investigated the death.
I'm pretty sure Lara Macy suspected Gibbs killed Pedro but decided to not continue with the investigation and it became a cold case, at the end of S7 Abby was invited over to Mexico by Alijandro Riviera to try and solve the cold case because Pedro was his and Palomas father. When Abby found out it was Gibbs sniper rifle and that Pedro killed Shannon and Kelly, she got rid of the evidence, Macy was killed and her body was burned and left for Gibbs to find because of her involvement in the cold case.
I know but originally NCIS thought Pedro was still alive until at least the end of season three. When Gibbs gets knocked into a coma DUcky and Jenny find out about the coma Gibbs went into right after Shannon and Kelly died. Jenny goes looking into his past and finds out about his first marriage and how it ended. And NCIS is still hunting for Pedro which means they didn't know he was dead.
And until Abby went to Mexico the Mexican government believed Pedro was taken out by a rival rather then killed by Gibbs. So why would a marine MP be investigating a murder outside the US when the government of the nation the victim belonged to believed the crime was committed by an unknown rival rather then a US Marine?
Of course now season 18 claims Ducky know Gibbs, and Knew about SHannon before Shannon and Gibbs got married

gotta love tv. if he were a real government agent, the age he was when the show started would have been well past the age he would have retired.
I had an idea brewing ... What If . . . His wife and daughter are alive? I thought maybe the car that was shot up and crashed could have been a decoy to throw the bad guys off . . . but maybe that wouldn't work. If I wrote fanfic, I would dig deeper and see how I could make it work. (That would be a great series finale though.)

Where to begin, first off Gibs wasn't military police during his service, he was a marine scout sniper (kind of a special forces within the Marine Corps), after his wife was kill by a cartel hitman do to her having been a witness to a hit committed by a high ranking member Gibs left the marines, he had attain the rank of Gunnery Sargent ( equivalent to an E-7 in the army), it was after he left that he join NCIS, his partner found out where the guy that kill his wife went to hide and Gibs went there and kill him.

There have been contradictions in Gibbs' back story.
In the episode "Heartland" it was implied that Gibbs' was 18 in 1976.
But we have since been told that his birth year is 1954 (literally carved in stone).
I won't bore you with other examples but suffice it to say, Gibbs' back story is just one of many examples of contradictions that creep up in long running fictional narratives.
Shoulda added a blurb connecting NCIS to JAG of which the former is a spin off.

I used to watch NCIS til Cote De Pablo joined the cast, not that there's anything wrong, I didn't like how she was introduced, I understand that Sasha Alexander left for bigger and better things but the show just wasn't the same after that, and even then I still watched it til about season 8, then I believe it lost its mojo, and believe me I was a huge fan, coming from JAG to NCIS, all the spin offs were a tragedy
sasha leaving and kate dying will forever be my biggest life disappointment. love ziva, but kate did it best. she was so undeniably funny.

NCIS is a banging show up until tony leaves, the loss of Ziva ruined my love for the show greatly as well, I find it a good show with Ellie there still but once tony leaves it mostly ruins what NCIS rlly is, i will say season 15 is interesting but nothing is the same without tony.

How to stop this in less than a minute and a half. Gibbs did not know the reason for his father and LJ's destroyed relationship. He didn't know until many many years later when he found LJ's purple heart metal in a pawn shop. This was what eventually led to the reconciliation Gibson's father and LJ. Don't even have any interest in watching the rest of these supposed facts.

I've never heard of a Marine doing a lat move from MP to infantry (where combat snipers are sourced). It is possible, although not likely to be career advancing.
A more thorough explanation would be interesting, but most likely it's just Hollywood error regarding things military as usual.

I used to watch this show religiously until the third time Gibbs got blown up. I ignored the whole Ziva David premise which was not only absurd but would never happen. No one becomes a federal law enforcement agent without attending FLETC or FBI Academy. The Abby character also strained credulity past the limits. Her shoes alone would keep her out of a real lab. And then there is the Gibbs problem. Enlisted Marine Gunnery Sergeant sniper is recruited to become federal agent. When did Gibbs get his undergraduate degree? And finally his age. Mark Harmon is approximately 68 playing someone under the age of 57 which is mandatory retirement age for federal law enforcement. The only exception is unless 20 years service has been achieved. That us not likely though as max age to join is 38. The Big Bang Theory was more credible.

Ziva was trained by & worked for Mossad and then was a liaison officer with NCIS she probably didn't need training like other candidates who had no experience whatsoever but she could have gotten training and it was just never topic of discussion. As for Abby strained credulity be interesting to know more. Her shoes seem fine to me. Every lab I have ever been in only required closed toe shoe with rubber bottoms which she has always worn. I mean in one episode NCIS told her she was in dress code violation and they wanted her to wear a suit and heels. Heels are definitely not any better than her boots. Since Gibbs was recruited when NCIS first started they probably didn't have such strict requirements back then and probably took him because he had first hand encounters. NCIS probably didn't care about a bachelors degree after his experience at the time. back in the day degrees didn't always matter unlike today where we obsessed with people needing to have a degree for little jobs. Things change over time. As for the retirement age yeah he should be retired but maybe he has such a good reputation they allowed him to stay on longer. A lot of this can be creatively explained but like other have said it is just a TV show and you shouldn't take it so seriously. I mean seriously how much of a loser do you have to be to take a tv show so serious?
This Video isn't entirely correct anyway. LJ did not convince Gibbs to join the Marines, he inspired him to Do it. And Lara Macey wasn't stabbed to death, her throat was cut.

I thought it extremely odd that Pauley Perrette would have such a strong reaction to being anywhere near Mark Harmon or being terrified of him.
I obviously don't know the man, but he doesn't come off as terrifying to me. I don't get how you can suddenly be terrified of someone you worked with for 10+ years without any problems 🤔
I reckon she made a mountain out of a molehill over the dog biting incident and rather than approach Harmon about how it made her uncomfortable, she decided to throw him under a bus by going to the big honchos behind the scenes. I can imagine that this would have disappointed Harmon, but I doubt he'd have turned into the Incredible Hulk or monstrous.

In fact there r quite a few people around the world that we wouldn't miss, Assad, Putin, Mugabe, the N Korean git, seems to me a timely bullet between the eyes would relieve much suffering for millions. Pity there isn't an actual Bond to get the job done.
