PLOT: Corporate drone Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) hates his soul-killing job at software company Initech. While undergoing hypnotherapy, Peter is left in a blissful state when his therapist dies in the middle of their session. He refuses to work overtime, plays games at his desk and unintentionally charms two consultants into putting him on the management fast-track. When Peter's friends learn they're about to be downsized, they hatch a revenge plot against the company inspired by "Superman III."

Such subtle stuff, like Lumbergh stretching in front of Peter as he's ordering him to come into work on the weekend. It's a dominance display.
There are scenes in this movie that just make my skin crawl. It's such a drab, soul-sucking, indifferent environment.

Particularly having to work both Saturdays and Sundays. We need weekends off, or at least one day a week off. But this guy is being told to work both Saturday and Sunday after working all week, and by the way he anticipating all week being asked, you know it wasn't t the first time he was.

Great movie. He didn't have to wait till the computer shut down, but I understand this way it builds up the tension.
This comedy makes it a great comedy thanks to all of the humor that goes around in the subtlety, in the background. Like the receptionist continuing on with the same one-liner "Just a moment.", way after it was introduced. It builds the world the main characters are living in, the atmosphere if you will, aswell as the emotions that are constantly toying with them. It is not only a funny running gag.
I think my favorite part of the movie is when Milton finally burns the place down. And I think Peter is the only person that knows he did it xD
Just now I realized that Milton warned that he would do that (1:36).
I don't think that Peter's the only one who knows because Milton was on the phone with someone complaining about his desk being moved again and said to whoever he's on the phone with that he'll burn the place down.

I think I need to re-watch this movie. Saw it as a kid, but, man, now that I'm an adult, Milton keeps popping in my head more and more often :D

True story - I had a manager once tell us "Just like John F Kennedy said...'ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country' - Same thing applies here...Ask not what your company can do for you...ask what you can do for your company!". all the employees just stared at him afterwards.
Milton reminds me of this woman who was in one of my former dance companies who had a very similar speaking style and personality. She didn’t wear glasses, and was a really fit/skilled dancer, but most of the cast thought she was a bit strange. I didn’t mind her.

1:28 I THINK that other stapler brand is Bostitch. Not Boston. At least from my memory of working at a huge office. And I preferred it to the Swingline, just because it looked more modern and sleek. The Swingline just seemed old-fashioned like a Chevy Bel-Air clonker, Heavy, too. And it had to be used on the desk. The Bostitch you could staple in the air by squeezing both sides.

It seems to me that Milton just wanted to talk to whoever he thought he could "grab" his attention.
they'd be about the same. I run into "miltons" all the time--if you don't look self absorbed, they feel they can bend your ear if you'll let 'em. i had one who called one time when i wasn't there, and took up my coworker's time for 15 minutes. another one filled up my answering machine--and called back 3 more times to finish up the story.

Once upon a time, there were two dominant & mutually exclusive computer platforms -- Apple Mac vs. IBM PC....
The Mac OS was designed to be entirely a graphical UI environment, whereas the IBM OS (PC-DOS or MS-DOS) was originally a command-line UI. Even if you installed Microsoft Windows on your PC, the original DOS environment was still there, lurking in the background until you exited Windows -- at which point the iconic "DOS prompt" would be revealed, waiting for the user to type in a DOS command.
The hilarity comes from the movie portraying a MacOS system exiting to a "C:>" DOS prompt, which at the time of the movie (late 1990s) was laughably impossible: the two different computer platforms literally wouldn't run each other's software because the hardware was fundamentally different & therefore incompatible!

There’s actually someone that did a mash up of the two scenes, where it’s Neo sneaking around and trying to avoid Lumburg. It’s freaking hilarious.

That's because I work at a small company with no middle managers and I think they're often not needed, and I don't want AI to take my job as an event coordinator.
Screw that let it run as CEO. Don't need to pay it 28 million a year or provide bonus incentives- Account and managment

AI would be the WORST boss ever.. It would be coded to be cruel and calculating - even more so than today's bosses. There are some good middle managers out there - mine for example is great. I'd hate to lose her.
