@EthanHarry Du I just want you to touch me.
Whoever called one of the jungle caves "Watched out for Dinosaurs" should get a raise
piplupcola YES
Hahhahahahhaha so true. Also, it's "watch out for dinosaurs" not "watched out for dinosaurs"
I prefere the garden of edam
Note the m

Why though. Is there something I'm not getting?
@@timpeter987 Idk, maybe they got hungry when they found it.
You know SciShow did their homework when they use Vietnamese accent marks in the title of the video correctly.
They have a really solid track record of doing their research and correcting the rare errors too, wish we had more of that in the world
0:28 Yes. Even though the pronunciation is still incorrect, but.., it’s close and recognizable.
Too bad they didn't spend the extra time to research how to pronounce them correctly.
CrimsonStigmata Different languages can pose very difficult pronunciations. They tried their best, and it was still recognizable.
She just nailed it! 👌
I was lucky enough to be one of the first non-professional visitors to make it to the end of Sơn Đoòng... there’s a Vietnamese-run company there, Oxalis, that has entered into an exclusive agreement with the government to run eco-sensitive tours into the cave, and thereby avoid the completely invasive commercial exploitation that has happened to other more accessible caves in the system, and I was on the first ever tour in 2013. It’s truly the most incredible natural structure I’ve ever encountered. One interesting point from the video, though... the largest cave pearls I saw were all in areas with relatively low ceilings and at relatively high altitude in the cave. The drop theory is interesting, and I didn’t see the very largest pearls, but I’d tend to think it was mainly the water and very, very slow deposition and evaporation of the captured pools in those parts of the cave.
The weather down there is also incredibly fascinating. Never thought I’d encounter fog under ground.
"Weather is just air doing stuff"
That part was funny, especially the way that she said it.
Wow, it's a direct quote from the video.
...
Yup.
@@fomalhaut_the_great actually I rewatched the video and its not a direct quote. Semantic, I know. But she does word it differently
@@fomalhaut_the_great 1:30 "All caves with air in them have weather systems, because that basically is what weather is just air doing stuff"
But I decided in my comment to tidy up her explanation because lets face it, she wasnt very succinct lol
Can we have a petition to add this in Minecraft’s cave update?
Once the petition to have a cave update happens

Though for lvl 100 mafia boss minecraft players, it is a whole different game that is without a doubt superior to Ark.

Cheers to Olivia for a commendable effort to pronounce Vietnamese names XD Btw, "hang" literally just means cave, so Sơn Đoòng Cave is ok
How do you even pronounce Đoòng? This doesn't sound like a Vietnamese word or name, but as I understand, it's the name of the area?
@@Don2006 it's pronounced pretty much like "gong" in English with a falling tone, and you're correct, it's not a Vietnamese word. It's from one of the indigenous languages of the area, specifically the Bru language
@@wikwalker7771 how do you pronounce the Ð in Vietnamese and other languages written alike?
@@everettduncan7543 the Đ in vietnamese is the D you normally use in English
“Hang” in Vietnamese means cave... so the name of the cave is Sơn Đoòng. It is pretty amazing. I hope the government doesn’t destroy the cave just like many other sites...
Lol
I think it is likely for Government to maintain it since Vietnam relies heavily on tourism
Wow, baseball sized cave pearls!
Can you imagine the size of those cave oysters?
@Voltaic Fire Pearl Earrings!
extra T H I C C oysters
Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble size pearls. Hahahaha!
Had I the time and money, I'd get a baseball, coat it in a few hundred layers of calcite and plant it there, to see if it was found in my lifetime. Yes, yes I *am* that much of a b*stard.
Let’s play baseball with those
There's a really good book called, Blind Decent: The quest to discover the deepest place on earth.
It's about 2 separate parties trying to find the deepest cave on opposite sides of the planet.
Pioneers having to create gear that made it possible etc... It's a great book, give it a go if you're into that type of thing. I'm not into caving, it was lent to me but I thought it was great. Really harrowing in places, the only thing comparable to deep caving in terms of isolation and being so far away from help, is being on the ISS.
Sounds great...I find spelunking fascinating.
Isn't there some extremely deep cave (or maybe it was a mine) where the air is so hot and humid, the water condenses inside human lungs and people have to limit their exposure?
AndyGneiss Yeas, there is the Naica Mineral in Mexico
@@Peanutdenver If you give it a go, get back to me and tell me what you think, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts. I thought it was a brilliant book, I ended up buying a copy for myself.
It's mind boggling how deep some caves go. Caving isn't for me, I wouldn't say I'm claustrophobic but the 2 things that get me is deep caves, with the never ending dangers they posses and going in a submarine, where you're little more than a bubble the ocean wants to crush... I wouldn't say they are irrational fears to call it a phobia.
But I think this slight fear I have of caves only added to the excitement of the book.
Like I said it's really harrowing in places as well, I won't go into detail but not everybody makes it...
@@AndyGneiss Indeed, there's a long list of dangers they can face, that does sound particularly unpleasant though.
There can be deadly gasses trapped in pockets, sometimes flammable, exotic bacteria that can cause severe illness, large stretches of water where diving is necessary through tiny cracks risking damaging breathing apparatus, and visibility can be zero underwater when sediment is disturbed further risking equipment. There isn't a single photon of natural light down there, so if their torches fail they're in big trouble. It's so dark they sometimes find themselves hallucinating, it's the minds way of coping with such absolute dark, there's also a name they give that I can't recall but the darkness and isolation sometimes makes people loose their mind a bit. Cliff faces sometimes with waterfalls that they need to climb down and eventually, back up... I could go on, the dangers are endless, it makes for great reading though.

Oh awesome, thank you!
Why I get 'Made In Abyss" vibe from this?
Those cave pearls look a lot like the blueberries found by The Rovers on Mars. You think they were formed in the same or similar way?
IDK but good question.
I knew that some of the words used by geologists when describing karst have Slovenian origin, but it so weird actually hearing it, especially on such a popular channel (doline literally means valleys in Slovene).
As a Vietnamese I appreciate the fact that you pronounced "Hang Sơn Đoòng" nearly perfectly so much that it kinda made my day
From Vietnam 🇻🇳 with love ❤️ ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I came too late! =((
I have never heard the words "cave pearls" repeated so many times in the span of a few minutes.
Cave pearls, ocean pearls, what next? Space pearls?
Wow. Sơn Đoòng was the topic of our group presentation last semester. I am so happy that Scishow did a video about this. As a Vietnamese, I humbly thank you for the work you guys have done ❤️
Best definition of weather ever; “just air...doing stuff”. Love it!
Fun fact: doline (dolina - singular) means valleys in Croatian
same for polish: dolina - valley
@@9999rav It's common for most Slavic languages, I guess
It is common for Slavic languages, but it was Slovenian Carst experts who helped Chinese in explorations. Being another Slavic nation, we also use the same term.
High momentum, bigger cave pearls. Got it, new life motto.
Chào mn!
Hey there, fellow vnmese in the comments

안녕하세요 👋
"Weather - just air doing stuff." I love it!
"Watch out for dinosaurs". That's how you name stuff.
I want a "weather = just air doing stuff" t-shirt from SciShow
WHAT?! I lived there for three whole months and I DIDN'T even know these were RIGHT THERE :O
"Hundreds of meters high".
What's terminal velocity for a water droplet?
Glad I'm not the only one wondering about that?
well it's a fluid moving within a fluid.... the droplet would change shape with increased drag... cohesion within the droplet would fragment it into smaller droplets... which would slow them down due to a higher drag to weight ratio... so i guess in the end it would be vaporated, with a "terminal" velocity of 0?
which is obviously not the maximum velocity... which is hard to calculate without knowing the optimal droplet shape and im gonna shut up now
Raindrops tend to split when reaching 4mm in diameter. The terminal velocity of the biggest ones is said to be around 10m/s
I had this same thought. I figured it out at about 8 meters per second. So... The second explanation doesn't pass the bs test. Any cave with a ceiling higher than 7ish meters would have the same size cave pearls.
It’s not rain, it’s dripping from the ceiling, maybe that makes bigger drops too?
"Doline, doline, doline, do-line..." - Dolly Parton
God, I forgot about this cave, thanks for reminding me of how much I want to visit.
Great video, Olivia! "Watch out for Dinosaurs" haha I NEED to check that out
Added to my places to visit list.
Is this where Wilma Flintstone gets her pearls?
Mattteus - That’s kind of what I said a few minutes ago as well before I saw your comment. Hahahaha!
Suddenly sci show has the best part of everything I could ever want.
those jungle names are amazing!
Didn't think it was possible to fall in love with caves...
My favorite cave is Tap sum bong. Lots of real cool plants in there.😂😂😂
I've been to Phong Kha, it's a beautiful part of the world, but I wish so badly I could afford to explore this cave, it's amazing
I've wanted to visit this place ever since I heard about it as a kid almost 20 years ago.
"Thats basically what weather is, just... air... doing stuff"
Vietnam is beautiful. Many natural wonders there.
amazing! karst topography is fascinating
Fantastic episode, very interesting
Amazing!
You've done a really good job!
Fascinating video! 😊
This particular cave has lived in my imagination ever since national geographic published a feature on it about 5ish years ago. Lovely to hear more about it
That cave is pretty cool. Would love to see it one day
This makes me think of the Ice Age Movie
I've been to that national park! And to a couple of the caves, my favourite place i've ever been
4:54 I guess I'll die if I drop from high ceilings
You have my unreserved praise! All vietnamese names are written with complete diacritics and tone marks!
Made in the Abyss irl...
Love seeing you Olivia
Amazing as always x
For some reason this conjures up memories of Gears of War 1: Into the Outer Hollow. 😃👍 Good times.🤔
To protect them from humans, the dodo birds were spirited away in secret to a cave much like this, deep beneath the waves of the congo
Ah, I have a title for my PhD Thesis statement: air doing stuff.
Arrrr, me hearty! That topography be karst, I tell ye!
first time ive ever been one of the first to watch,,,, love the vids tho
We did this excursion in February. There is no exaggerating how amazing this gem of a location is. Oxalis is the only company that can guide you through. They are amazing! If you’re in a position to do this physically and financially put it on you list. You will not be disappointed!
Phong Nha Ke Bang is maybe the most beautiful place on earth. The people and food are amazing too. When I was there my first time it was so amazing I just stayed for about 3 months. Regular people aren't allowed in Hang Son Doong, but you can easily go in Paradise as long as you don't mind the climb!
I have only one word on my mind right now: Zork.
Ventilation of chipmonk, groundhog and other underground systems is well understood. Studies of these should be examined to see how applicable the systems are to these caves.
Great presentation! Thanks!
World within our world? Worldception. Put your faith in what you most believe in. Two worlds, one family
I've never been this early, I should be sleeping tho... it's 2 a.m where I'm from ☹️☹️
Ooh its 12 am at my place :/
Oh wow it’s 5pm for me!
dont go on the railway tracks at night
@@Q_QQ_Q why tho
Toothache keeping you up? It is to me. Can't sleep
I had no idea that there were jungles in caves anywhere in the world
You know it's summer when Olivia breaks out the earth-tones.
on my way!
Thank God Sci Show Exist
Fabulous!
I've always wanted to go to this cave to see the semi contained environments.
SciShow videos are always louder than the others btw
You know SciShow is legit when they used the accent marks in the tittle and try as hard as they can to get the pronunciation right.
Greeting from Vietnam.
Interesting
I've visited my family in vietnam several times and tbey never took me to a place this cool.
Its a bit funny when she speaks some Vietnamese words like Phong Nha Ke Bang or hang son doong. But overall a very interesting video! I hope this will also bring awareness to people to help protect and preserve these natural wonders that are dying because of thoughtless human activities! Thank you!
Nice I love that caves like this dont just exist in skyrim
Like the part about cave pearls. Don't think too many people realize that caves could produce a pearl. I think they're cooler than oyster pearls.
You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.
Brilliant video! (No pun intended)
haha thanks!
"Caves! The Caverns of Helm's Deep! Happy was he chance that drove me there! It makes me weep to leave them!"
Her pronunciation of Vietnamese names made me laugh. Then I plugged "Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng" into google translate and the TTS made me laugh too. But hey, I didn't realize it was named "Sơn Đoòng" and not "Sơn Động" so, I learned something new today.
Like that movie "X men day of future past" 😂😂😂 it's ok trying hard. But pretend that you know something you don't in front of the pro is really hilarious
Doline
Doline
Doline-Doooliiiiine
Luv that Dolly Parton song!
Makes me wonder how many caves are out there that have not yet been found.
Son Doong cave-Vietnam's largest cave on planet earth! It's large enough to house an entire New York City block, complete with 40 story skyscrapers. It's said, less people have seen the inside of Son Doong Cave in Vietnam than have stood on the summit of Mount Everest. Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province in Vietnam, has so many butterflies and caves that people have dubbed Vietnam, the land of butterflies or the land of caves.
So basically, this cave is just Blackreach from Skyrim
It's not the size of Son Doong, it's how you navigate the cave caverns.
0:28 : you don't need to say the word "Hang" in there cuz it's mean "cave" in English so you just need to say "Son Doong cave"
WOW! 😯❤
There’s a cave on the Lake Erie islands that is literally a geode you can walk into
I knew about this cave just from watching a show on animal planet.
For the theory of the water droplets: At which height would a drop reach terminal velocity? I would assume way less than 100m. Then it wouldn't really make a difference how tall the cave is as long as it is above that height.
Am I the only one who learned about this cave from the caving community? I think it was either a presentation at a grotto meeting or an NSS publication where I learned about this.
I discover an entire world within myself when i see you, Olivia
It's like it's own terrarium.
I read about this on the ACT
Rad!
2:25 "On top of that, those dolines..." Hah -- pun intended? :)
