I remind myself of this every time I head out the door for my marathon training, or whenever I start comparing myself to others. Comparison is the theif of joy, except when you compare yourself to the average person sat on their sofa while you're out doing your long run 💪
I rarely see content about people running 4+ hour marathons, but there's so many runners who do exactly that. Thank you for representing that segment of the running community!
There is something so comforting about watching your podcasts with a hot cuppa. Thank you and well done Tom! You have made me want to sign up to a marathon
Watched this video and then watched Sarah's Road to Amsterdam series. In spite of saying I would never do a marathon after my half marathon last, it pushed me to sign up for a full marathon at the Saint Louis Go Marathon on April 24th next year. Now I'm all excited to start a new training program and shoot for a 4:30.
Congratulations again to Tom! I ran my first half marathon this month, and my goal is to run my first full marathon next autumn. The Running Channel helps keep me motivated, so keep the videos coming!
Just ran my first marathon this morning. Finished, but did terribly. Goal was 3.50-55. Ended up doing 5.19. Half was 1.55. Gastro bug to blame. But seeing this episode put it all in perspective. Thanks guys. I still got a PB today but next time it will be faster!
I did my first marathon today. Trail marathon with 748m of elevation. 5hr 19min, not fast but the hills were a killer on the hip flexors. Dont feel to bad calfs and hips a bit stiff but otherwise all good. 😊
I would say that for trail and Ultra marathons the finish time is secondary at best. I would approach that much more for the experience and the journey. Planning on doing one next year, let's see if I feel the same afterwards 😂
Congratulations on picking a trail marathon as your first. I have to agree with Ultra, times are definitely secondary. I've done both road and trail marathons, and also ultras. A road marathon, unfortunately the first question you'll get is generally "what was your time?" Or "was it London?". Run a trail Ultra and the first question is "what possessed you to do that!?" If you're think of doing an ultra, then I'd definitely recommend it. Times are important in the respect that most will have a stage cutoff, to ensure you finish safely (10-11hrs for 50km, 16-18hrs for 100km, 20-24hrs for 160km+), but the added challenge of terrain, elevation, not having supporters along the route, self navigation etc. make Ultra marathons a whole different level of achievement. Good luck with your running and best of luck with whatever you choose for your next challenge.
Funny you chatted about your first marathon the week I’ve booked my first for next year! Thank you for all the great videos you have made on running marathons !
I have my third marathon tomorrow, but 9 years removed from my second race. Thank you for running a long race and taking some pressure off of me reaching my goal. It takes more courage to finish last than first.
After three babies, it’s tricky NOT to wee while running! And before you ask, yes I’ve done the exercises. Also, I’m running with my kid during his offseason cross country year. Anyone have some fun ideas to keep the runs engaging for a tween?
I'd recommend changing your route regularly and maybe try some interval sessions to make the runs more interesting, but I think it's really important to talk and have some fun during these runs.
My question for the pod: How can novice runners find their 'red line'? I will be running a 10km next month and wondering how I set my goals and pace strategy, while being flexible to the conditions on the day. I just did my first half marathon race last month, and while I'm happy to have hit my big goal of sub-2, I ran the last half KM at faster than my mile pace, which has given me this nagging feeling I could have pushed harder earlier. There were many points in the race where I held myself back out of fear of going hard too early, and would love the team's insights on concepts / workouts / experiences they use to understand how to push themselves to the limit, but not over. Loving the pod and all the variety in content. Keep up the great work!
The videos for his marathon training and marathon run are so helpful. I’m a taller slower runner and I’m running the LA marathon this year, and only 18 weeks worth of training. Love the video!
Another fabulous podcast guys. Well done Tom, I did watch your video of the marathon. To me time isn't important. Finishing is my main and only aim no matter whether it's a 5Km of a half marathon, I haven't run a marathon yet and doubt I ever will at my age, 76, with an injured knee but there is always hope. Great work, didn't really miss Andy 😂😂😂
Pee while running ? Remember ,Nothing New On Race Day .Did you practice in your training ? Unlikely . If you think shaving 2 or 3 minuets of your time is going to make a difference ,practice it. Otherwise if there is no privacy / bushes etc , just kneel down like your fixing your shoe ,take a breath and let it flow AND your shoes stay dry ,some guys should be able to prefect this and stay dry.
Good advice for a wee. If it's a no 2 it's definitely not something to put off. Especially in a big city marathon. You don't want to go viral for all the wrong reasons 😅
It is possible to wee on the run but needs practice. You have to learn to relax. It is then possible but make sure you have water to use to rinse. It is critical that shoes get washed otherwise the smell is terrible.
Chicago is a great marathon they keep finish line up till last runner comes in but they move everyone to sidewalk. My wide did it in 7 hours but they treat at the finish line like she was middle of pack calling her name out giving her encouragement
If you are coming over for thr Boston marathon, stay an extra week and go down to Virginia for thr blue ridge marathon. Toughest road race in the states.
Xact Nutrition available in Canada definitely has a “fruit chew” bar with concentrated beet juice (nice solid but soft texture too - not messy like a gel, softer like a fruit slice candy)😊🇨🇦
For avoiding a wee in a Marathon, i try to get well hydrated a few hours in advance and then stop drinking at least an hour before the start. As a man over 40 it is pretty difficult to not stop once in a marathon :-/
After my last 10k, i was very annoyed with my time. It seems very behind my B Goal. But on the way home i looked at the numbers, it was not a 10k but 10.6k, and with that, the real time for the 10k was exactly the Goal i set myself. Sometimes it needs a bit of distance and reflexion to realize how well you have done. And i am totally with that "6h is realistic" people. If people talk about plans for marathon, it totally differs if they finish in 2,5h or 6. Fuel sometimes is like "i only need a porridge in the morning" , yeah dont think so. I would need more in a normal day even without running.
OMG I totally relate to Alice. My 5 10 and half all are within 7:50 - 8:05 mile paces. The last 2 of a half does drop so I know a full marathon would drop past 8:30.
Cyclist pee on the bike while coasting. Triathletes pee in the water. When Bill Rodgers was asked if coffee is good before a marathon,he said I don’t know but it helps me to have a good BM before the race. That is the most important goal before a race.
Ha! Champ and running guru Andy, asking us to drop some advice 😅. Here’s a tip - treasure every minute with the tots. When you’re older, like me, you’ll agree with the worn out cliche - they do grow up so fast…in retrospect 😳.
Hi, Kevster here, sixty three and three quarters years old. You were saying that you wanted your team of presenters to represent all types of runner, which do you feel represents the older runner such as me?
Nearly 63 year old woman here. It would be lovely to see someone like myself (middle of the pack marathoner 25 years ago) on this channel. Love the channel.
Question for Sarah. What’s harder a marathon or a 50k ultra. I’ve ran 2 marathons. Now i’ve booked a 50k ultra. just wondering what sarah’s thoughts are on these 2 runs. Regards Neil
I also found it impossible to pee myself (you'd think it was a good thing but same reason as you Sarah). I'm doing Paris in April next year. I was thinking something that would be really cool is if you could train alongside (in person / virtually) other people in your pace range.
Question: is it a bad idea to just drink electrolytes while running? I did my first ultra on the weekend and had water and electrolytes in my vest and felt like I favored the electrolytes as it was flavored. Not sure I drank that much water. Is that a bad idea? - Penny from Sydney Australia :)
loved this episode! I always love what you guys do but the 'relatable' comment/ 'I recognise myself' for me is still missing to a small degree. Where are the average 5-6hr female marathoners in their 50s? You guys are all so young! love you all though ;)
Do you mean to guess a time faster or slower than they expect to run? Personally, the two times that a race asked me for my expected time I was conservative. For a half-marathon, I submitted a 1:50 expected finishing time and finished in 1:42 and change, and for a full marathon I submitted a 3:40 expected finishing time and finished in 3:27 and change.
Beet juice, beets blended DO increase energy, help you oxygen exchange- they are amazing . Drink , eat them Also… vegan eating is best for the planet and everBODY Love ur show. I appreciate y’all Chris 🇨🇦 👋🏻 🫶 Ontario
Oh, I pee every 5km, no way around it😂 and I didn't have kids. I did some 10-15k trail races and people look so surprised when they see me hit the bushes. I manage to pee in under 5 seconds though🎉
Andy is going to have to get used to the idea that the way normal runners win marathons is by finishing. Time doesn't really matter. The only person in the race is yourself. That is going to be a hard mindset change for a competitive olympian.
When the ultrarunner Dean Karnazes was asked what time the average person finishes a marathon he said
"Average people don't run marathons"
I remind myself of this every time I head out the door for my marathon training, or whenever I start comparing myself to others. Comparison is the theif of joy, except when you compare yourself to the average person sat on their sofa while you're out doing your long run 💪
I rarely see content about people running 4+ hour marathons, but there's so many runners who do exactly that.
Thank you for representing that segment of the running community!
Sarah's advice of "don't avoid drinking to avoid needing the toilet" is spot on. Dehydration in a Marathon will slow you down more that a wee stop
There is something so comforting about watching your podcasts with a hot cuppa. Thank you and well done Tom! You have made me want to sign up to a marathon
You should do it!! Have you got any in mind?
Watched this video and then watched Sarah's Road to Amsterdam series. Now I'm all excited to start a new training program and shoot for a 4:30.
I love that you said "the time only matters to you."
Congratulations again to Tom! I ran my first half marathon this month, and my goal is to run my first full marathon next autumn. The Running Channel helps keep me motivated, so keep the videos coming!
This is so amazing. Watch this space - Tom becoming an ultra runner! Go Tom! This will be so inspirational to witness!
Just ran my first marathon this morning. Finished, but did terribly. Goal was 3.50-55. Ended up doing 5.19. Half was 1.55. Gastro bug to blame. But seeing this episode put it all in perspective. Thanks guys. I still got a PB today but next time it will be faster!
you were more awesome for finishing it and getting over the line despite your difficulties!
No such thing as a bad marathon FINISHING time 🙃
I did my first marathon today. Trail marathon with 748m of elevation. 5hr 19min, not fast but the hills were a killer on the hip flexors. Dont feel to bad calfs and hips a bit stiff but otherwise all good. 😊

Amazing Mark! Which one are you taking on??
Going from a half to full marathon and training tips by Sarah while she was preparing for London Marathon

Sarah's so genuine and wholesome!
And pretty ❤
@@MichaelOGorman-p1i this does not have any context here.
My first marathon was basically 6 hours it was so relatable watching him
Running my first marathon in two weeks. Love the timeliness of these videos!
My first marathon is NYC in one week! Enjoyed Tom's story in my own build up
What I've learned from the podcast today is that nappies for runners would probably be quite popular 🤔 Oooh! They could be called *Runnies*
What I've learned is multitasking to pee while running is a skill to develop in my marathon plan 😅😅😅
I SO want these!!
There are lady and gentlemen “nappies”, most likely in a corner of the supermarket most men wouldn’t visit. You’re welcome 😁
🤣
The chafing though…. I can’t imagine
🎉🎉 yes Tom!!!!!!! I see so much of myself in Tom. thank you for your vulnerability. ❤

It took me to my 5th marathon before I hit my sub4 hour goal which was just this year January. It is great to hear Tom’s story and experience!
20 minutes of candy crush and I tried to wee while running... love the honesty on these podcasts.

Audio's a bit dodgy on this one!

"I found a new person" DROPPING FIRE TOM
I still haven't done a marathon, I've done about 16 weeks of a 21 week training block for it but got an injury
I still haven't run that far in one go either. Hope you get better soon.
I saw that video! It was so relatable and amazing.
Really glad you enjoyed it!!

I cant find the vid of his 6hr marathon can you drop the link in the comments please😊
I found that going to the toilet before entering the start pens works pretty well, but I guess it all depends how quickly your body processes liquids.
Really enjoy the podcast and the fun. Will the Running Channel be in Greece for the marathon ? I looking forward to it
Can you do a best starters dalily/trainers/running shoes for the heavy runners video?
Ha! Champ and running guru Andy, asking us to drop some advice 😅. Here’s a tip - treasure every minute with the tots. When you’re older, like me, you’ll agree with the worn out cliche - they do grow up so fast…in retrospect 😳.

I ran a 8 hour trail ultra marathon in September and didn’t need the loo at all until the very second I stepped on the finish line 😅
I also found it impossible to pee myself (you'd think it was a good thing but same reason as you Sarah). I'm doing Paris in April next year. I was thinking something that would be really cool is if you could train alongside (in person / virtually) other people in your pace range.
Do Garmin have a Portaloo Pause function? ;)

I love your smile Sarah.
For me Tom is a hero! It is not easy to cross the finishing line🦾
I used to think it was impossible, Sarah.
My first and last marathon didn't feel very good.
26 miles! Im still working on 1 LOL
I run my first marathon last month, finished 3:19. It felt like it's my last marathon.....
loved this episode! I always love what you guys do but the 'relatable' comment/ 'I recognise myself' for me is still missing to a small degree. Where are the average 5-6hr female marathoners in their 50s? You guys are all so young! love you all though ;)
That audio, though... 😜
I think alot of people over guess what time they will do it in, just so they are in a better wave, whether that is a marathon or a half.
Quick initial thoughts Tom is softly spoken so his audio sounds vastly quieter than Sarah and Rick so need to look into the audio balancing.
I found a way to the wee. You slow down to a quick walk.
Comment kudos! Sub three is rad-life. I saw alluding to plant power in your vid... Are you Vegan like me? I've been for over a decade now.
Beet juice deffo changes pee and poop if you have the amount they recommend leading up to a big race.... Bit off putting first time you see this 😂😂😂
😂😂
Beet juice, beets blended DO increase energy, help you oxygen exchange- they are amazing . Drink , eat them
Also… vegan eating is best for the planet and everBODY
Love ur show. I appreciate y’all

I’m training for my first ever marathon which lands on the day before my birthday AND I just found out I’m 5 weeks pregnant. 😅
I can wee when I’m running no problem. But that might be down to my age. 😅
Sarah ❤️
Oh, I pee every 5km, no way around it😂 and I didn't have kids. I did some 10-15k trail races and people look so surprised when they see me hit the bushes. I manage to pee in under 5 seconds though🎉
Team Beetroot!
Lovely sentiment to represent every different kind of runner… how about just a little representation of us oldies?..
Okay no candy crush, got it 👌
New hair colour?!? 💁🏼♀️
Andy is going to have to get used to the idea that the way normal runners win marathons is by finishing. Time doesn't really matter. The only person in the race is yourself.
That is going to be a hard mindset change for a competitive olympian.
I peed myself during a 1500m race once :) NOT on purpose
Does Sarah like Tom? 😉
