I agree 100 % with Sarahs rant. Who are these people that saying running a marathon easy and without a time in mind doesn't count? 🤔 I participate in half marathons and marathons first and foremost because of the experience and sense of accomplishment. Time and PB are secondary.
By the way, my next full marathon is London in april 2024! My first major! :)

Sarah, you've nailed it! I have recently fallen in love with running to help both my physical and mental health. I am still a back at the pack runner but I run because I want to prove I can. Knocked 13 mins off my parkrun and 20 mins off my 10k. Signed up to my first half this weekend where I'll waddle around the Thames hopefully in less than 4 hours. That might seem a long time for most runners but for me that's going to be a proud achievement.

Sarah, you’ve got it!! Running isn’t all about times and places, it’s about the feeling you have at the end of the race, it’s the accomplishment that you’ve done it, the people who you talk to during your marathon/half/10k. The sense they’ve got the same amount of achievement that you have too. Thanks for the podcast, love it. Keep on running all of you.

My favourite half marathon ever was Royal Parks half where I paced a friend to a PB. Had such a good time taking selfies, chatting to people and motivating others. Way more fun than any time I've gone for a personal PB.

I may be late to the party here, but I want to say about the marathon times. Not one person I have told I have run a marathon has asked me my time. So many people are just amazed that I've done it. Even other runners have just congratulated me. It's one of the things that has amazed me the most. After other races, I've always been asked about my time, but not after the Yorkshire Marathon. As someone who would have been timed out of the Chicago marathon, it's quite frankly, the best feeling. To just be celebrated for DOING it.

As a Chicagoan I am so proud of my city and the magnificent event we host every October. I wasn't running this year, but I was passing out little paper cups of water at around mile 8. I'm very happy that you and Tom had such a good experience. I saw Kiptum, Chepngetich, Sifan, Emily Sisson and Molly Seidel as they flew past me. I was looking for you guys, but didn't spot you. I love this and abbut about the first question you ask someone after they say they ran a marathon... not about their pace. I'm gearing up to run my first in April, and I'm already dreading that question. I'm even running a half in 2 weeks, and people seem to discredit the effort if it isn't a certain speed. That's almost kept me away from doing these longer distances.
Loved Andy's quote, too. Finish Lines not finish times. It's about the journey. I'm not an elite, and that's okay, and my reasons for running are very different than many out there. I'm just happy so many of us get to share in this experience together, whatever the reason that brought us to the race together

Also, I personally do most of my running on the treadmill because I'm very paranoid and even in broad daylight I don't feel safe at times. With regards to the piece about not running for a time, I don't care where I come in a race, which quite often in last place, as I cant run fast as I only started running in 2017 at the age of 70. My aim in a race is just to finish and to know I've run the best I can also knowing that I have beaten millions of other people that can't be bother getting their backside off the couch or get out of bed in morning.Take care all of you and good luck with marathon Andy. I'm running a half marathon at the end of next month. I've been training to try for a good time for me at the moment. Maybe even a PB. 2 weeks ago my eldest daughter (19yrs) asked if she could run it. This will be her first half marathon. I'm giving up on a good time and am excited to run with her for her first. To be fair this will be my 22nd half so while I'd like it to be fast, I have many more chances for fast... this might be the only one with my daughter... or the first of many... who knows 😊

As far as Trail Marathons vs. Road, I found trails far more physically exhausting. Also in the Midwest US, all of our trails are in wooded areas with roots all over the path. There's not much of that nice gravel you get across the pond. What that means is that you're constantly watching your feet. Look away 2 seconds and its very likely you'll trip.
Its recommended you walk hills during trail marathons. All the turns and switchbacks you can't easily hold a constant speed. It can wear you out.
