The chromatic mediant sound works, but I feel like this is a chord that defines the character of the song (the minor plagal cadence is a very distinct sound). From the original tune I get the "Creep" Radiohead vibe (it's the same progression), and this I don't.

The flat six major cadence resolving to the one reminds me of some Beatles tunes. Although it shares two notes in common with the minor four, the major flat six definitely emits a different vibe and leads to an interesting rendition of the song. Personally, I prefer the minor 4 for this particular piece. :)

I thought the same thing at first, but it's actually quite good, with interesting characters, solid humor (at least it is to me), and a persistent world that keeps the "marks" of past episodes (also means you get more out of the show by watching it from start to finish, but you can start where-ever).
