Isn't it supposed to be : Er (subject) ist (verb) zu Hause (preposition+ object), weil (conjuction/nebensatz) Er (subject) muss (modal verb) die Hausaufgaben (object) machen (verb).? I think the correct sentence should read: Er ist zu Hause, weil Er muss die Hausaufgaben machen.

I see that generally perfekt is preferred over präteritum. Can you please explain the reason behind it? Also, thanks for the videos, they are extremely useful.

Both is correct.
Perfekt is more common for speaking and präteritum for writing.
