To confuse us (deliberately), the Gov't has given two different things the label 'Smart Meter'. 1. One is the little free-standing device that you can have in your home showing how much 'energy' you are using. 2. The other is the Smart UTILITY Meter - that's the large SUPPLY meter that the Utility company uses to measure usage and charge you for the supply. It's the second one - the SMART UTILITY METER that's the risk to you - your power can be remotely switched off, either by the supplier or a hacker. Plus, because there is no encryption or security, a hacker can access your usage to see if you are home by monitoring power usage.
I've had letters from my supplier stating that my old meter has gone 'end of life' and it needs to be replaced by a smart meter. They never provide proof of this and have been happily accepting my readings for a number of years with no warnings to say my meter may be failing in any way. In addition, if I choose to change the payment plan I am on I have to have a smart meter to qualify for any new, better cost plan, whether with my existing supplier or a new one. How legal is this? This is tantamount to black mail! I won't change! I know exactly what devices are high energy users and always seek to lower my usage. I don't need a remote switch to tell me that.
I've been having similar issues where I tried to change provider only to be told I must accept a smart meter, which I won't. Just recently my current provider for electricity has changed my billing from quarterly to monthly, meaning I now face threats of late payment 'fines' 12 times a year instead of 4. On top of this they've stopped issuing me with a paper bill so I'm forced to pay online, I can't even take an old bill to a paypoint as they've changed my account number. When I phoned them and complained about this unnecessary inconvenience and tried explaining I can't always get to the communal part where all the meters are housed all she could say was 'smart meter, you need to get a smart meter', it was like talking to a pre-programmed dalek. It's disgusting the way they're being allowed to mistreat their 'valued' customers.
find the gabby cabby on here apparently you can ask to see manufacturer proof the meter is end of life.....to enter your home they need a warrant and mags wont give one without this proof
Take the cheapest plan (direct debit payment only) and book a smart meter appointment..... then cancel it. I did x2 appointments and cancelled both of them but hey ho what do you know, I'm still on the cheapest plan my supplier offers. I submit my own readings x2 a year and due to the dark location I can't always see the digits clearly.

They jack up the standing charges easily with smart meters. Standing charges are the biggest scandal of our generation. Its almost £15 per month for standing charge, thats £180 per year which could have been used for food instead of being profit for utility corporations. And they are chasing people who are struggling who end up being in debt for not topping up the minimum standing charge - this is for people who have top up smart meters. They are forcing debt onto people who otherwise would not be in debt if there was no standing charge.
@@r.h.8754 Mate, i am old enough to know there never was a standing charge ever before - for years, so who was paying for all the convenience back then ?
Standing charges are a disgrace that penalises low usage. For years I was able to escape the gas standing charge when Ebico was my provider, my bills went from around £5 a quarter around 17 years ago up to around £13 a quarter a few years back. Then suddenly Ebico stopped providing their service and pushed me onto BG who honoured the no standing charge for one year only. Now my bills have shot up to £60 a quarter, my gas usage (a couple of hot water taps) hasn't changed.
Was FORCED to have gas & electric SMART meters as part of the condition of new contract. Meters been in one year, give false readings and have now broken down & not working. Reported to EON who said its an industry wide problem with no timescales on when meters will be fixed or replaced. EON advised for me to send in manual readings monthly. But as there is no display on the meter I cannot supply a reading. So I am assuming EON will now GUESS my usage potentially over charging me. SMART meters do not work, they are not SMART, now over charging potential, and I have seen no evidence of saving money. Bring back old electro mechanical meters, they work.

Smart meters are not smart. All that happens is the digital display shows that you are using electricity when you switch on the electric kettle. From this you are supposed to deuce that electric kettles use electricity and if you stop drinking tea, coffee, Bovril, Ovaltine or any hot drink you will save electric energy. Then you switch to using a kettle on the gas and the meter says the same thing, from which you are supposed to deduce once again that drinking hot drinks in the winter uses "ENERGY". Stop it now all old freezing people in the winter no more hot drinks, often results in death. Even I'm dumb enough to figure that one out.
Also when the workers threatened to go on strike at his refinery in Scotland he closed the gates to say your all sacked then everybody went back to work .
But what you failed to tell us is that most energy companies that offer cheaper deals have in their terms and conditions that you agree to have one installed , this practice should BE STOPPED
That happened to me when I wanted to fix my rate - we talked figures and agreed and was told yes great and you agree to have a smart meter fitted. Man. What an ugly world. It sickens me. And to LIE about so called CO2 reductions. How can a smart meter reduce emissions? IT'S INCREDIBLE they actually push this I am out of words.
Smart meters - Turn off your energy supply from a remote office. Online banking - freeze your assets from a remote office. Electric car - stop you travelling from a remote office. See where this is going, if you have a discrepancy with your gas bill, pay up or we’re going to turn off your heating mid January………………..

IT TOOK ME MONTHS OF ARGUING THOUGH & IN THE END I HAD TO GO TO THE OMBUDSMAN. THEY MADE THE ENERGY COMPANY PAY ME 100 QUID FOR TRYING TO TELL ME IT WAS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT & FOR THE INCONVENIENCE CAUSED.
Every time I get a pressure call to have a Smart Meter installed I inform the salesperson tha they are reciting from an illegal script and guilty of an act of misrepentation on a vulnerable customer. Call ends immediately.
I told them no a couple of times a few years ago. They don't bother any longer. Every couple of months they send an email asking for readings which I do. Our bills are way under "average." We often put on fleeces in the winter, instead of putting on the heating. No intention of getting a heat pump. Sums simply don't make economic sense.
Heat pumps cost £10,000 per year more than gas boilers and that's according to BBC, the government is now fining companies for not selling enough of them.
And dealerships get fines for not selling EVs. So what they do is let you order a petrol car, then at the last minute, tell you its not available. " but you can have this EV for the same price!". They are all at it.
The last call we had about having a smart meter went as it always goes, ‘no thanks, not interested, dont want one”, and we really didnt think much more about it… that was until a ciuple of weeks later an engineer showed up saying he was booked in to install out smart meter. Even after telling them no they booked us in for an installation anyway. Disgraceful behaviour, many older people might have just let them in to do it.
This country loses £590 million Per year! yes per year as the electricity network and transmission grid cannot utilise or harness the energy produced from wind turbines, they can overload the network therefore we the taxpayer have to pay through our bills to have windmills supply turned off and made redundant often temporarily, yet the government won't tell you this, it's bad for business
Sounds like bad forward planning to me. I live in Lincolnshire where we are having a battle with National Greed who want to run new cables on pylons overground from Grimsby to Walpole in Norfolk to import power from Scottish Wind Turbine fields to the London area. Also they want to build switching and converter stations at various points along the route plus allowing literally dozens of new wind and solar farms to connect to the grid to feed the south-east. The cables should be on the sea-bed and infrastructure should be either where the cables make landfall or in areas of no population. Solar farms should not be allowed on prime agricultural land needed for food production and free-stream tidal turbines should be the means of generating all the energy we need and more.
I must admit I've noticed some local wind turbines here in south Lincolnshire have been stationary recently despite the winds blowing. I know sometimes they "Feather" them to prevent damage or overspeed when the wind is too strong, but there seems to have been quite a few off-line lately.
The savings to be made are by the supply companies not the public. Knowing how fast the bill is going up is of no use to someone without the funds to implement savings measures like LED bulbs, low power appliances and so on. Digitisation is fundamentally about data collection and once it is collected you can be "managed" with it. Social credit based on your electricity consumption anyone?
I keep getting told I need a smart meter. However they've now sent 3 different engineers who've all said I can't get one fitted!. What's the point of bullying me to get one and sending engineers when the engineers themselves say they can't fit one lol
They might not legally be able to force you to take a meter but they can refuse to supply your home if you don't submit.....submission seems to be the default demand these days.
I had them installed because i was going away for some time and was told that i wouldn't have to pay the standing charge and sure enough i was charged while i was away
I had a phone call with a bloke telling me when he’s coming to fit my smart meter! I told him I hadn’t asked for one, he said everyone is getting one, I said, well, “thank you but I don’t want one” he said again, “everyone is getting one” so I asked “is it compulsory to have one? Is it the law?” He went quiet then said “well…no, but everyone wants one” I signally replied “I don’t, so stop bothering me” and put the phone down.

Correct. Our bodies , our homes. They can get to France 👍
It's my home it's my choice, I choose not to comply to their scheming and scaremongering.
Yup. Fuck 'em.

Same with me! LOWER TARIF IF I ACCEPT SMART METER. BLACKMAIL!
find the gabby cabby on here apparently you can ask to see manufacturer proof the meter is end of life.....to enter your home they need a warrant and mags wont give one without this proof
I will not have a smart meter.. i read my meter every month.. i do not want to pay for electric to use it..

Smart meters don't cost anything to run except for the tiny consumption of the display unit, and you can leave that off if you prefer.

After covid
They can stick them, where the sun does not shine.
They already do cause of all the chemtrails 😂
I regularly had phone calls and visits from Scottish power trying to get me to have one. I told them they were harassing me and said if they kept it up I’d change provider as it’s voluntary not compulsory to have one fitted. They haven’t bothered me since.

I contacted the energy ombudsman and was offered a crappy apology from an OVO CS agent on the ombudsman interface, after I told her where to stuff her apology she then offered me 30 quid bill credit (see insult) I turned that down, because of the amount of phone calls, emails and letters/leaflets regarding having an idiot meter, I was then offered another apology and a 60 bill credit, which I accepted, and I have not heard a peep out of them since, and if i did do I would inform them that I will treat their contact as harassment.

Heat pumps cost £10,000 per year more than gas boilers and that's according to BBC, the government is now fining companies for not selling enough of them.

No chance
The savings to be made are by the supply companies not the public. Knowing how fast the bill is going up is of no use to someone without the funds to implement savings measures like LED bulbs, low power appliances and so on. Digitisation is fundamentally about data collection and once it is collected you can be "managed" with it. Social credit based on your electricity consumption anyone?

You're right Nigel, was bullied into getting smart meter and it's been an absolutely awful horrendous nightmare ever since.
Predominantly because it's never worked properly since they were forced on me!
British Gas keeps on emailing me to get a smart meter. When I click on the link and fill in the form on their website, the last question is "is the meter inside or outside". It is outside (like most peoples'). The website immediately says f*** off, you can't have one. Over and over and over and over and over again.
