I used to listen to this when I was 13/14 at home when I should have been in school. It affected so much I'd never heard such beautiful lyrics they sort of immediate in my heart and soul. I saw them in Glasgow about 15/16 years ago they were amazing not to old to say I cried a few time's... beautiful song beautiful band thanks for changing my heart and soul x
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I played it to my fiance last night and she had never heard of Magazine. I was a big fan of them back in my youth in Germany in the 80s, and still listen to their material regularly, despite owning 1000+ CDs and ten-thousands of MP3s. So much genius!
1980, in a derelict part of Derby. Queued for 2 hours in the freezing cold, eventually to be let into an old cinema with overflowing toilets and broken seats. Bauhaus were on the bill and blew us away with blinding bursts of light and a ear drum numbing sound. To follow, Devoto and his band nailed it with musical genius and overwhelming power. The best live performance I ever saw. I can still smell the urine and my ears are still ringing. But is was worth it. Thanks guys!
"NO THYSELF", the new Magazine LP is superb, and really sounds like it was made during their classic era. BUY IT NOW...give the guys support so they can produce more great music.
echo Devito46 Magazine the best and most underated band of all time saw them sprodacily in 78-79 but followed Correct Use of Soap tour round britain. always part of my life listen to them everyday, like other bands but always come back to these unique musicians and would pay anything to see them reform even if just a one off gig So Howard and the boys what about a commemorative gig to remember John McGeoch who was the best guitarist ever.thank you for 30 wonderful years of real life
Magazine doing a cabaret tune, shades of Roxy Music's 'A Song for Europe'! Only Howard Devoto is incapable of lying, so we get the Weimar decadence full in the face with no dissemblage. Love the balloony bass. Glad these guys recently got back together (minus the dear departed McGeoch) for another go. They don't make postpunk like this any more...
Atmospheric, poetic, mesmeric, most under rated band ever, a delight for all ziners (but not as good as permafrost), music never really progressed from this.
Nash the Slash told me he opened for them at the el mo, the band was delayed crossing the border. They took to the stage.. unrehearsed , tuned up and destroyed it. Nash gave them the highest of praise. That from another genius.🇨🇦
sham..again thanks for the post of this fine gig.once again the song is nailed..enio..the guitarist was robin simon who took on the guitar playing duties for magazine during the 1980 tour...i saw magazine live in 1980..a music highlight..but i never got to see mcgeogch..either with magazine or siouxise..(robert smith was on guitar) when i saw her play australia in 1984! go figure!!
I didn't know much about this old band... but I can see here how this influence to portishead or moloko and same others actual bands...Am I crazy???????? I came here after listening an old cover of them from Radiohead, so I thank you so much for Uploading this one...
Years ago, someone popped up online to answer my question of how Adamson got his bass sound. I think it was the man himself who answered: Chorus, Flanger and Delay! The Bebop Deluxe bass player had a similar but less developed tone. Maybe Barry was influenced by him?
A friend of mine just put me onto this not too long ago and told me it was required listening essentially. I'm disappointed in myself for waiting the few minutes that I did, this is absolutely brilliant.
I have 2 tickets for Manchester on the Saturday and 2 for Glasgow on the Monday - Magazine were simply one of the best bands of all time - get the album 'Play' - best live album I own.
@clibit That´s right. I saw them on the 6th of June in Velp, The Netherlands. With John Mc Geogh. Later on I saw him with Siouxsie and the B. Strange for me. Loved both bands. But Magazine was his roots... although he was completely perfect with Suzy ...and Visage !!
Have only just found out about this song via the new Nouvelle Vague lp, previously I only knew one song by Magazine, Shot by Both Sides. Very impressed with Parade, great feel to it.
MAGAZINE.........without doubt innovative and utterly brilliant...... I can testify to that.....got all their albums and seen them live 3 times (sadly,it should have been more if they'd "toured" Magic,Murder and the Weather)
The have been my true Gods for last 30years. I will, and cannot forget them. But I agree with the opinion that they are forgotten by the"common people" Perfect band for a melancholy Swede.....
I saw these Cats in San Francisco on September 4, 1979. It started out to be a great night when the Frail I had my mind on was being rather seductive. My 20 year old blood was up - cocaine fueled libido and all. I shared with her before we drove to the Old Waldorf…after we were inside on the tickets I had paid for we got our drinks and stood around talking excitedly-I was and am mad for Magazine. After about 15 minutes she saw a “friend” and wanted to go say hello to him. This Bird had flown. I didn’t see her again that night or for 3 years after. I was feeling played and distraught and rejected. After about the 2nd song I was fully engaged and duly impressed with the band. I figured fuck it and said to myself,”oh well, too bad, so what, who cares.” That became the chorus for one of the better songs I wrenched from the æther. At least that was funny. Thanks for reading this far if you have. Wee Howard was one of the most intense and great front man I’ve ever seen. Cheers.
I own a double album (vinyl) recorded live in Boston, USA called "Back to Nature" (live in Boston '79; Centrifugal 12CENT-10C) - bought from USA for $5 last year! Not for sale!
Love this and all the early stuff. Got a question - does anyone have Jimmy Edwards (RIP) cover of “In The City?” If so, could you post it please also if you wanna sell it I’d be interested, thanks
John McGeoch left the band around July 1980 and did not play on this tour. I suspect this is the Sydney gig that was converted to the Live Album, Play. May be wrong.
Yip, the 'classic' Magazine line-up will have to wait until a later date in the sky - what about Robin Simon though who features on the Play album and also on Ultravox - Systems of Romance - where is he now? Tremendous guitarist!
I see him regular he's a good mate of mine.A great guitarist but has not had the luck he deserves. Still occasionally records with John Foxx and was in the reformed Visage a couple of years back but that gig ended with the untimely death of Steve Strange. It's him in this video of course.
Tell him from me he was a HUGE influence on me after I saw him with Ultravox back in the 70's and was chuffed to bits when he joined Magazine. Slow Motion still a favourite track as is this one.
I love that scene in 24 hour party people with the real Howard Devoto in the bathroom as the janitor. He says I really dont remember having sex with that guys wife. Totally awesome.
Can't believe what I just read..you're friends know Joy Division but not heard of Magazine...do your part get them hooked on Magazine..this band is awesome, take care.
If one of Tori Amos' fingers falls asleep and dreams its a boy band this is one of the songs it'll play on a Wintry aethereal starry moonlit Spring nocturna Summers Fall eve. But you already knew that, right
I used to listen to this when I was 13/14 at home when I should have been in school. It affected so much I'd never heard such beautiful lyrics they sort of immediate in my heart and soul. 45 years on and the light still shines out of this sublime track..
Fantastic Song. The Guitar and the Bass sound, brilliant……👍👍👍
Possibly the greatest song ever written. Certainly has my vote.
By far, the best group to emerge from the 1976 punk revolution. Devoto was the Philip Roth of the New Wave.
+SoulStylistJukeBox absolutely, love this band, rara avis...
i would agree but clock dva might just pip them .....?
STILL my favourite band of ALL TIME !
Who's Philip Roth?
@@rustytuney7 An American author whose writing occassionally reminds me of Devoto’s songwriting.

Incredible story bro, somethings just stay with us, even the smells lol
especially the smells
stephen angloinkl
i saw that tour too.
same tour in liverpool...........amazing
I guess with magazine we were lucky to be on the inside of what was important. Reward came with repetition. This is spectacular.
Nothing better than the original from Magazine.
A lost jewel of a song. Brilliant on so many levels.
Yep, musically and lyrically - perfect.
It IS a Master piece!
I have always loved Magazine, this song is a beautifully haunting love song I never get tired of hearing. Thanks for posting this.
Probably their best song. They were/are very fine musicians and this song displays that quality admirably.
I just love the tune so much, I've lost count of how many times I rewind the sax bit !
They were so huge in Greece during the 80s....i can't really describe how much. Magazine Rock!!!
just SUBLIME !
John sadly died in his sleep on the 4th March 2004. Played with Magazine, the Banshees, PIL, Viage etc and was a legend!
Dave Formula....the best keyboard player of the eighties!!!!
Recorded live at The Metropol, Berlin for WDR, Rockpalast television on 30th October 1980.
"NO THYSELF", the new Magazine LP is superb, and really sounds like it was made during their classic era. BUY IT NOW...give the guys support so they can produce more great music.
Unbelievable album.....saw them "tour" it in Sheffield....WOW
Fabulous - Adamson's bass and genius that is Devoto!
echo Devito46 Magazine the best and most underated band of all time saw them sprodacily in 78-79 but followed Correct Use of Soap tour round britain. always part of my life listen to them everyday, like other bands but always come back to these unique musicians and would pay anything to see them reform even if just a one off gig So Howard and the boys what about a commemorative gig to remember John McGeoch who was the best guitarist ever.thank you for 30 wonderful years of real life

I saw Devoto sing this in Los Angeles when he toured with Luxuria. My favorite magazine song.
Shivers down ma spine...
So thankful that this even EXISTS, fantastic.
Nice work, Sham.
Just Genius, thankyou Howard.. still as good as ever 30 years on
Just Genius, thankyou Howard, still as good as ever 40 years on..
I keep coming back to this song and this performance. As someone else said below, 'mesmerising.'
Peerless, wondrous beauty🔮
Great song...Love Magazine..
Yeah,Great band.Second hand daylight is my favorite album. Thanks for posting Sham64.
Peace.
Atmospheric, poetic, mesmeric, most under rated band ever, a delight for all ziners (but not as good as permafrost), music never really progressed from this.

Best intro ever. The first minute and a half is all I need. Haunting.
sham..again thanks for the post of this fine gig.once again the song is nailed..enio..the guitarist was robin simon who took on the guitar playing duties for magazine during the 1980 tour...i saw magazine live in 1980..a music highlight..but i never got to see mcgeogch..either with magazine or siouxise..(robert smith was on guitar) when i saw her play australia in 1984! go figure!!
One of my favourite songs, sometimes I forget that we're supposed to be in love.
I used to see them several times, then, they were my all time favorite band.. together with Wire, and a few others.......
Magazine really did it for me at the time, and still does. Their music is part of me. Feel better with this music in me...
This band was so under valued!
Barry’s bass 😎
Yessssss, brilliant Sound….
Genius bassist
Oh my god! Brings back great memories!
This is truly great.
Utterly magnificent after all these years, looking forward to the new album
Great keyboard work !!!
I didn't know much about this old band... but I can see here how this influence to portishead or moloko and same others actual bands...Am I crazy???????? I came here after listening an old cover of them from Radiohead, so I thank you so much for Uploading this one...
One of the best intros ever!!
Is Barry Adamson playing a fretless bass? It is simply awesome.
He's actually playing a fretless bass with his flange.....you need to practice a lot to do that, I can tell you
at 4:04 it looks like he's playing sans pick
Definitely a fretted bass, and no pick. Sounds more chorused than flanged mibbe?
Years ago, someone popped up online to answer my question of how Adamson got his bass sound. I think it was the man himself who answered: Chorus, Flanger and Delay! The Bebop Deluxe bass player had a similar but less developed tone. Maybe Barry was influenced by him?
@Justin Stanley Love your comment,I'm also a massive fan of Bazza as a Solo Artist (seen him twice).
God, I love these. And this song...
A friend of mine just put me onto this not too long ago and told me it was required listening essentially. I'm disappointed in myself for waiting the few minutes that I did, this is absolutely brilliant.
thanx for posting...i love this song!
I have 2 tickets for Manchester on the Saturday and 2 for Glasgow on the Monday - Magazine were simply one of the best bands of all time - get the album 'Play' - best live album I own.

Its like à bowie song in better!
Beautiful... :,)
"Post punk piano" at its peak ;)
Great song! I like Buzzcocks too...
@clibit That´s right. I saw them on the 6th of June in Velp, The Netherlands. With John Mc Geogh. Later on I saw him with Siouxsie and the B. Strange for me. Loved both bands. But Magazine was his roots... although he was completely perfect with Suzy ...and Visage !!
one of my favs songs of mine too ;)
Beautiful!
Have only just found out about this song via the new Nouvelle Vague lp, previously I only knew one song by Magazine, Shot by Both Sides.
Very impressed with Parade, great feel to it.
this is one of the best band'
What a great example of new wave!
Magnífico
MAGAZINE.........without doubt innovative and utterly brilliant...... I can testify to that.....got all their albums and seen them live 3 times (sadly,it should have been more if they'd "toured" Magic,Murder and the Weather)

One of the best songs I ever had the pleasure to listen to! (Even if I like the the regular LP-version a bit more!)
Almost(but not actually) forgotten I have this album on Vinyl, must digitize it and listen to it in all its glory!
grate song
@newellgirl you on the ball with John McGeoch. A brilliant guitarist who had real colour in his playing.
He certainly was but this is Robin Simon playing here.
Thanks.
Post-punk in peak of music., nice song
I own a double album (vinyl) recorded live in Boston, USA called "Back to Nature" (live in Boston '79; Centrifugal 12CENT-10C) - bought from USA for $5 last year! Not for sale!
These little cherubs look so young. Goodness me look at Barry in The Bad Seeds now... ahhh bless 'im..
Its genius
Class
Everyone knows Joy Division, it doesn't even surprise me when someone tells me they know Joy Division...
Love this and all the early stuff.
Got a question - does anyone have Jimmy Edwards (RIP) cover of “In The City?” If so, could you post it please also if you wanna sell it I’d be interested, thanks
much more robotic, stuttery than the album cut. very nice
magazine owns
John McGeoch left the band around July 1980 and did not play on this tour. I suspect this is the Sydney gig that was converted to the Live Album, Play. May be wrong.
Robin Simon playing here.
howard . my hero.
Bizarre - same here.

Exit light, enter night
Anyone tell me where I can get the video/dvd of this gig? A torrent link will do. Ta, La Muff.
I love that scene in 24 hour party people with the real Howard Devoto in the bathroom as the janitor. He says I really dont remember having sex with that guys wife. Totally awesome.
I love you Big Dummy! Mag are fucking A1.
Anyone know when and where this concert was?
Incredible band that was very overlooked.. Radiohead copied them big time..DeVoto=genius
Can't believe what I just read..you're friends know Joy Division but not heard of Magazine...do your part get them hooked on Magazine..this band is awesome,
take care.
What's the word for fecking fucking genius... 🐇
If one of Tori Amos' fingers falls asleep and dreams its a boy band this is one of the songs it'll play on a Wintry aethereal starry moonlit Spring nocturna Summers Fall eve. But you already knew that, right
Devoto was a Mozart of his time
