Accidently run into their Real Life album in 1978. That was and is a real masterpiece. Bought Secondhand Daylight blindly as well a year later and without any regrets. Also bought their later albums, but these two are my favorites.
Absolutely fantastic....lovely to find some Magazine on here, a criminally underrated band, one of the finest ever. Mr Devoto, just sublime and Mr Adamson, the coolest bass player ever?
Denis...you are so right. Exceptional, indeed. Devoto was criticized for leaving the Buzzcocks? Are you kidding me? Sure, the Buzzcocks were more successful, but I'd rather listen to Magazine. Know what I mean?
One of those rare occasions when you get two great bands coming from one. Good job Pete Shelley was a great songwriter too, as The Buzzcocks still made some great music even after Howard left. I love both bands and still listen to them both.
One of The Best songs Ever! I was working with the Government of the Northwest territories in Canada fire fighting when I heard permafrost. I was actually fire fighting on permafrost in the NWT. What an amazing band. Thank you for your inspiration.
Thrilled to find Magazine here... Fan-tas-tic ! Magazine live. Happily I caught them 7th of June. Velp, The Netherlands. So happy, cause they were so good. Love Magazine to death.
Wow that’s the sound of great lyrics ,Great keys, Great drums , Bass and Guitar all at once. Each member is a genius and that’s what made magazine so great.
@@penmaenmawrdefiant1146 , I don’t believe that baselines were that prominent at that time. Mostly they just followed the music, which is why the baseline is so brilliant on this track.
Try and convince someone else to share the genius of Howard and friends - there were only two of us in Australia as far as I knew that listened to this stuff at the time ! Great times together. RIP Hugh
Saw these guys in SF in 1979 or early 80. Old Waldorf(?) Truly an amazing performance. And the recordings are still as fresh and raw in 2010, particularly live album.
This was at the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent. People were shouting fuck off you southern puffs, which was ironic because they were from Scotland . Simple Minds first album I think was called Life in a Day and it’s still one of the worst albums ever made.
Its an Ovation Magnum I, made by the company better known for their plastic back acoustic-electrics. Jah Wobble is probably the bassist best known for using Magnums, and apparently he's still playing his.
and yes indeed, it would be a amazing Karaoke song! I once did a Karaoke of Type O Negatives "Everything Dies" at a bar and people were standing there looking at me with the look of WTF is he singing? GOOD TIMES!
This really is as good as it gets, I first heard this in 79 and it just gets better - second hand daylight is the greatest album ever, try feed the enemy ,but then motorcade might be better, ultimately Magazine are the finest band.
I was proper pissed off when Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks. Then I heard Magazine and couldn’t believe how brilliant they were. And The Buzzcocks carried on making great records too. Howard and Pete Shelly were both great songwriters, so we got two great bands out of one.
Dark....!! What a fantastic performance. So much talent in this band - very under rated. No reflection on Robin Simon, but it is a shame this classic one isn't with McGeoch though, as there will be no more performances from the late great McGeoch.....
Permafrost never ceases to fill me with awe. Who the hell would write "I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost"?! The bass and synth create the most perfect mood; creepy but serene.
Ah yes, the Amphetamine years...I remember them well...wait, no I don't, that's the problem...say no to drugs... or at least say..."What does that little blue one do?" I'm joking...drugs are baaad, mmmkay? Kudos to the 16s...it's so good to know this awesomest of bands are as fresh to you now as they were to us old geezers back then....I still get goose bumps...and my GF of 30 yrs still gets off when I sing to her...gets off to her mothers that is...:)
No Magazine. No Smiths! All hail the miserablist Howards Devoto! Although I saw them in Top rank in Cardiff in about 1997 and I think John McGeoch was the coolest looking guitarist i'd ever seen.
When I went to University in 1982 I assumed the left wing credentials and music taste of my hipper A level school friend. His knowledge of Magazine who were so controversial and trendy at the time led to several sexual encounters I would have never have had. Secondhand Daylight still resonates.
@@Jah_Rastafari_ORIG I think that particular guitar belonged to the band, according to the Helen Chase biography of the band. McGeoch probably had more than one anyway
They are a bit like Brian Eno on steroids. Loved 'em then and love 'em now. It's no coincidence that I also love Radiohead and the Manic Street Preachers who love love 'em to bits.
any idea who will be doing re issue and approx date i tried to buy jerky versions on cd from america and got outbid at £125 sterling. howard and the boys the most underated band ever 30 years and im still obsessed
@ajj4account I actually have daydreamed about this several times. In all seriousness. I don't think I've come across a Karaoke bar that has this song through... yet.
The best album from Magazine. Secondhand Daylight is fantastic.
Stillgelegte Bahnstrecken-TV It sure is.
Real Life
Performance live, album "play" 1980.
I have the Play album and it’s great. The Correct use of Soap is a good album too, but not their best.
And I also love the Alternate Use of Soap.
"Thunder shook loose hail on the outhouse again"
What a fucking opening line! Frighteningly brilliant band. Thanks for posting.
yes, you're right.
Oh my, I'm just 16 and so thankful I just discovered music like this. I must be the only guy in my school who listens to this.
What do u think 9 years later?
@@spensert4933 second this question. Can't imagine being able to come back to stuff I did online a decade later lol
I think I bought Play in the 80s. Here I am now...still loving this!
Accidently run into their Real Life album in 1978. That was and is a real masterpiece.
Bought Secondhand Daylight blindly as well a year later and without any regrets. Also bought their later albums, but these two are my favorites.
Never fails to send a shiver up and my spine!
The peerless Secondhand Daylight.
Haha, _shiver._
I met Big Bazzer a few years ago - lovely fella and one of the best bass players ever! Very under rated & ignored
I had the pleasure of shaking his hand after his gig in Manchester about 5 years ago.....AMAZING....he had 9 or 10 musicians on stage with him.
Absolutely fantastic....lovely to find some Magazine on here, a criminally underrated band, one of the finest ever. Mr Devoto, just sublime and Mr Adamson, the coolest bass player ever?
Magic song.
John Mc Geogh R.I.P,amazing guitar lines, one of the best.

One of my all time favorite bands for over 30 years!
Nach so vielen Jahren ist es immer noch geil.
One of The Best songs Ever! I was working with the Government of the Northwest territories in Canada fire fighting when I heard permafrost. I was actually fire fighting on permafrost in the NWT. What an amazing band. Thank you for your inspiration.
Still not sure what the lyrics with the “drug use and F you “meant but the music rocked with that Bass sound!
Probably be banned now for its reference to date rape drugs. This was way before all this cancel culture crap!
Thrilled to find Magazine here...

In my opinion that is one of the best songs ever written
d the baseline is second to none. Astonishing stuff. Thanks for the upload :)
the baseline was prominent in music at that time and I agree this is great.

Still stands up well after all these years.
I love this song and Magazine
Still love that album and especially this song. That was a glorious time to be that age.
Great quality video of one of the greatest songs of all time - thanks.
@chinakitty1
For Robin Simon to step into McGeoch's role... well... I don't envy him. But he manages a more than diligent job. Great Stuff!
I've been troubled by the word 'diligent' for many years, but here, finally, is my like.
Real spine-tingling stuff here. Love 'em or hate 'em, they were like no other!
j'adorais Magazine, toujours autant de force!!!!
In high school this was one of my favorite bands ! 31 years later still in my top 10. The correct use of soap is a top ten all time album 4 sure!
February 14th in manchester, So excited. One of my all time favourites!!!! Went to see Barry Adamson recently too, he was the shit :D
Fabulous tune. Love barry's bass

Amazing stuff. Brainy punk - my favourite genre!
I'm enjoying learning this on the Flute.
God, how awesome is this song?
Impeccable song. One of Derbyshire Police's favourites.
one of the best songs ever, a classic...

Truly an amazing performance.

Anecdotes from that night?
They were supported by Simple Minds who got glassed off stage after two songs. People forget how bad Simple Minds were in them days.
This was at the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent. People were shouting fuck off you southern puffs, which was ironic because they were from Scotland . Simple Minds first album I think was called Life in a Day and it’s still one of the worst albums ever made.

Robin Simon, grossly underrated guitarist!
from the greatest album ever, secondhand daylight 1979,period...
sensational? This right here is stunning. What an amazing band,
I love it how he comes in with that punk non trying great voice.
Godlike geniuses these!

Used to listen to this album soooo stoned! loved it.. live in Melbourne perhaps???

Where is a DVD of this guys performance? Doesn't Britain realise that in this guy we have a national treasure. This is exceptional.

Definately the most underated band of all time!
Definitely before their time. Everybody was into punk then, so this came as a surprise. Shot by Both Sides gave them the chance to crossover.
Dark....!! What a fantastic performance.

It happens in March, EMI are doing them, also doing the Luxuria albums from what I hear, keep the faith!
Haha, I got in to them when I was 16 too! I'm 17 now and a girl.
Fantastic.
If Magazine came to Norway, I'd totally flash at one of their concerts.
I always thought Robin Simon did a really good job aping McGeoch's parts and style
Ashley Reaks and equipment, it appears...
Fucking LOVE this song!!! As kinda fucked up as it may be, still brilliant!!!!

So good
that guitar is too good. Jon Mceocgh genius.

Thanks for your help, it's a little too old to have a polychorus on it but that's what I originally thought it was.
Thanks for the tip-off!
you have been saved boy. follow the post-punk path and everything will be allright.
keep listening.XTC too fella
Wow this is brilliant!
Class!
THANK YOU
their song is unique i think is not how popular you are.I think is more unique this band because a few of us know well what is good music
Tell the others to do so too. Please.
bloody epic
What fx pedal does the guitarist use, does anyone know?
What an amazing band!
I was that kid, as well.

Extremely sinister. Not likely to make many people's funeral song.
