I bought a brand new KLX650 in 1996, in England. I did 60,000 miles on it in four years, commuting and green laning and loved it, fabulous bike.

Thats crazy how u never seen one, I grew up in Brooklyn NYC and them KLX 650s played a biggggg part in our childhoods. Just seeing the older dudes wheelie up n down flatbush ave 20 to 40 bikes deep was amazing to me, and these things are LOUD so imagine how it sounded. The colors of these bikes were definitely mesmerizing, it would look like a tidal wave of crayola crayons washing over the avenue. I would follow them on my mountain bike trying to wheelie too 😂. I definitely have to get one now, you inspired me brother, I didnt even know there are good condition ones still floating around.
..And fun fact, idk how or where the plastic bottle in the back tire trend began lol, but i remember all the kids in Brooklyn doing it so their bikes can mimic the roar of the KLX650, good times man. IM GETTING MINE SOON!

always replace with manual cam tensioner there is a significant improvement. adding a fitting to oil vent with course stainless steel or u trap can limit oil burning significantly. if adding performance exhaust and tuning carburetor, intake boot can get a little soft in 100+ degree weather.

That is a beautiful bike. Mine is a 1995. I have never seen another alike when i am out riding or even out on the freeway commuting to work. I bought mine for less than 1k usd. Not running and Only problem it had was the kickstand switch was missing and cables were just dangling. It idled rough but when put in gear and let the clutch put it would stall. Solution was connecting cables together, a carb rebuild and have never had an issue since.

Bought a new klx650 in green, back in the day. You need to get rid of the tyres if your using it on a wet or damp green lane. Mine was useless. Apart from the tyres it was a fantastic bike. However the weight is a pain off road compared to my lighter off road bikes. Plus how fare do you want to travel?
These 3 factor's need to be taken into account.
Always loved it & always missed it.

Haha, had a 96 KLX 650C4. I was looking for a dual sport, it looked legit and got a great deal on it at end of 96. Looks were waaayyy off! God it was heavy! Did ok for its size once rolling, but the suspension was awful. I think screen doors had a better shock then the thing. The forks marginally better. I put a pipe on it that saved some weight and rejetted it which woke it up. Funky looking bike graphics and purple frame and seat (but that was 90s standard). KLX if youre looking for more of a dirt bike you can take on the street. KLR for a better street bike you can take on the dirt. I only kept my KLX for a year before realiizing we werent a match and dumped it for a plated KTM 400 before I killed the KLX offroad.

I bought a 1995 KLX 650 new and still have it in Canada. mine is a KLX650-C3 the third year of making them , yours is a C4 for 1996 so they made them from 1993-96 . the stickers are from factory the unitrack on the swing arm and the plastic with the KLX is also factory but the Green looks darker to me then the 95's , your missing the back sticker's on the plastic near the pipe , on the front forks white plastic it would have said UpSide Down on the sides from new with stickers .The shocks on motorcycles in general where the other way in the 80's and in the early 90's they flipped them for better performance that's were the Upside down comes from .The back rack is Factory . keep a eye on the automatic cam chain tensioner some owners were putting in Manual ones in , there should be a form on adventure rider website on this bike . i had one back in '98 to '01 when i was 18ish......awesome bike if a bit tall for me at 5'6"...i lowered it about 40mm by making new rear suspension linkage bars.....my only real bitch against it was that it was short geared in top gear...4300 rpm at 100kmph if i remember right....i went up one tooth on the front sprocket and it was then too tall in first but better at road speed.....gearbox ratios were bang on for windy gravel road work though.
The KLX300 was popular here and there was fair number of the other young guys had them on the road and and without realising what i was on they would challenge me to races from the lights up the hill out of the town i lived in...i'd let them get ahead and then as they were going down gears i'd pass them on the steepest part and make a point of changing up into top gear when i was just ahead of them just to prove the awesomeness of my extra 350cc's as i did a horizon job on them

The klx has shim under bucket valves, and a gear driven balancing shaft.
That said, in Europe was sold as kick start only too wich is even lighter.
Once again that said the xr650r is street legal in Europe as is the xr600r too.
Great bikes all 3 of them.
Funny enough the klr 650 had and it still has terrible reception in Europe. Due to its cheap components…
Everyone says they are great but that’s only true if you address all the issues.
From the box, best dual sports are:
    1 xr650r
    2 drz400
    3 wr450
    4 xr600r
    5 ttr600
