"Imagine it's 1997!" Rob: "Ok sure"
He wasn't sure what was happening, but he was on board anyway.
These first few minutes 😂💀 I cannot
Same, I cackled 😂 he’s just trying to be supportive 😂
MY FAVORITE
What AMAZES me is how good your memory is
I didn’t know that I needed a towel folding tutorial, but I feel like a more well rounded human being now 🙌
“Imagine it’s 1997”….i already am every moment of my life babe.
Every time this series gets updated I try not to look at the runtime, and every time I immediately fail 😂
I imagine Rob is still picturing 1997.
paint changes colors as it ages with sun. that leftover paint was most likely the original color so it might be best to just paint the whole ceiling so that its all the same.
Someone once recommended to mix the paint with some dust to match the colour that aged, but I haven't tried it and don't know if it would actually work.
@@28bruchnah dont ruin the paint if it didnt work
I think your ceiling just needs a full repaint. What probably happened is the paint they used faded over time or has been discolored (candle use can tint your paint!) so it no longer matches (or it separated in the can). The best thing to do is just do a full repaint lol
MY BIRTH YEAR 🎉❤
edit: omfg jaqueline wilson was my childhood, dustbin baby had me hooked
I have similar feelings about Ann Patchett! The books that I’ve read from her have been quiet character studies with very little plot, but there’s something so compelling about her writing that they’re hard to put down. I recently read and loved her newest book, Tom Lake. I’d highly recommend the audiobook, which is narrated by Meryl Streep.
i second this recommendation!! JUST started the audiobook today and i’m obsessed
Same! Im devouring the audiobook. Great storytelling even if understated.
The way you described the 5 star read was like deja vu, I recently kept trying to knock down a 5 star I read just because it didn’t grasp my soul, but not all of them have to!
The way you described the different types of moms🥺 so many memories. I’ve only read one Ann Patchett but loved it, will be trying Magician’s Assistant!
The sequel to parabel of the sower, Parable of the Talents came out in 1998. The poisonwood bible also came out in 98. I havent read that but ive loved some of her other books
I was coming to suggest this one too!
I suggested it and then read the comments. sorry about that. you were here first but so good.
Poisonwood Bible 10/10 one of my favorite books of all time. I stayed up all night to finish it.
I dissected The Poisonwood Bible so thoroughly in school that I don’t think there’s a single book I know with more granularity. There are parts of Ada’s chapters, like the William Carlos Williams reference, that opened my mind to writing as a craft.
Kayla loves multiple perspectives, so this is a great recommendation.
The bits and pieces you show us of your family are so wholesome 🥰
The discussion of different types of mothers was so real and lovely.
The paint situation - from what i have been told, by multiple professional painters that we've hired, if you touchup an area, it will be noticeable regardless
if it's the correct color. We were told you need to paint the entire wall or ceiling so those "marks" won't show. It has something to do with how "old" the paint job is. When we moved into our current home that is 15+ years old, my son's room looked like your ceiling and the painter we hired was like yeah, that's what touch ups will do. Probably not what you want to hear, but thought I'd share my experience with repainting an entire house recently
hey from the UK! Year nine is the school year you turn 14 if that helps. Jacqueline Wilson was a huge part of most girls childhood growing up in the 2000s. If you have not watched and read Tracey beaker it is a must! xx
I love the chaotic opening. Lol Holes was first published in 1998.
I've read that one! Loved it but I reread it in my childhood revisit series and only gave it a 4 😭 haha
@@BooksandLala I gave it 4 too, but I figured it was worth a shot. The only other 1998 book I read was Left Behind 1 the teen edition. Don't subject yourself to that though
Kayla starts reading Jacqueline Wilson and instantly I am transported back to my childhood.
For your ‘98 vlog, I saw A Bad Case of Stripes is an option. I can say that is still a big favorite among the 3rd and 4th graders I’ve taught. It’s a weird & trippy book so you may love it. 😄
That towel hack with the pocket my mind is blown!!🤯 I come here for entertainment and bookish things and leave with amazing life hacks and tips. Love you Kayla❤
So glad your channel exists! So entertaining ❤
My grandma received spice world as a gag gift for Christmas when I was a kid. She had no interest in it but let me and my sister watch it because she figured its a kids movie. My mom definitely would not have let us watch it if she knew the contents of the movie, but we loved it. We ended up watching it multiple times when we visited our grandma's house. So many scenes stick out to me. The aliens, the assless chaps, the bridge jump, the concert scene. So entertaining!
The Murakami faces are sooo spot on lmao 😂 Everytime I read one I make sooo many faces. With that said 1Q84 is one of my fav books. Lol
I moved to a new place alone today so I kept this video to bring me some familiar comfort on my first night 😊 loved this so much
I am going through the worst time of my life right now and while I know it is weird for a random person on the internet to say that you are helping them through difficult times, it is the truth. It is so easy to turn off my brain and relax and even laugh at you and Rob lol! Even when I am not reading such as now, I love engaging with your content. Thank you for what you do!
as another random person on the internet, i’m wishing you all the best with whatever you’re going through 💕 you’re not alone
@@kyestrellathank you so much! 🩵
For paints, you can scratch off a bit of paint and take it in to a paint store or hardware store with paints and they can color match.
i’m obsessed with the shirt you’re wearing in the editing portion??? that’s gorgeous
you have great taste in books AND candy, Astros were top tier and I miss them every day
The Ann Patchett effect. Vibes, vibes, vibes. So good.
Low key 5 stars. ⭐️
I was so in love with Jonathan Taylor Thomas as a kid too 😂😂
Me too!! I got a JTT scrapbook from my scholastics book fair and I read it so many times!
Ahhhh, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion! Such an excellent movie.
UK person here: Year 9 is age 13-14, just for context. Loved this video!
in this US it’s 14-15 so it is about a year off from us (not sure about canada). do you all start at year one when we start at kindergarten?
@theotherveronica Age 3-4 is called early years, age 4-5 is reception, and then age 5-6 is Year 1, if that helps?! I genuinely don't know anything about the US system 😆
As a 34 year old lady this series is absolute top tier nostalgia and I appreciate it so much!!!! 🙌🙌🥰
Re: 1998: If you haven't read Paradise by Toni Morrison, I would definitely recommend that one. I have seen 1997 and 1998 for publication years. It's an absolute fave of mine and one of her lesser mentioned books. First line: "They shoot the white girl first. With the rest they can take their time." Obviously, it explores themes of violence against women. Also, I recommend Trash Lands by Alison Stine (not 1998, just your trope) as a quiet dystopian. The themes on safety of women in society and the threats of materialism for future generations are expertly explored.
This is girlhood! Also the way I also worked at a hotel in high school and still fold my towels and sheets as I learned back then 🤭
I love it!!
Instant like for the beginning with Rob lol 😂 this made me want to reread the Magician's Assistant - my first and only Patchett but it's probably a decade since I read it.
PLEASE read the pact for 1998. jodi is my favorite author and that’s a super solid pick that’s different from your normal vibe!
Me instantly saving this video to come back to the folding of towels 😅 THANKS! Show us more hotel ways!
1997 was an amazing year for movies. I LOVED all the ones you mentioned. Excess baggage was EVERYTHING.
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson is the way for 1998! "In Steischoros, Herakles kills Geryon and steals his red cattle. In Carson, Herakles breaks Geryon’s heart and steals his innocence." Plus, Anne Carson is Canadian.
for the ceiling paint I think you need to use some double sided tape and stick those swatches on the ceiling so they'd be exactly where you can compare them best with the natural light.
Yay I was waiting for this one! The 1997 babies are sat
I’m holding out hope that you love Revenge by Yoko Ogawa in your 1998 vlog, I know you never give 5 stars to short story collections so it’s probably not a prediction of yours but it’s such a non-typical collection in a way that could help buck that trend!
Yes, this collection is so good!
your description of the ann patchett is literally my favourite type of book. slice of life, families relating to each other, nothing happens, unresolved ending. PERFECTION. i will read that!
OMG SPICEEEE WORLDDDDD 😍😍😍😍😍😍😤😤 I played that VHS out as well lol aww memories!!!
I think your ceiling is arcade white. but you could try cutting a small piece from each of the samples and taping them to the ceiling and seeing which blends in the best. or try chipping off a quarter size piece and bringing it in to get color matched.
If you're still looking for a solution for your ceiling, I think if you can take a little chip of your ceiling and bring it to the paint store or where you get your paint and see if they can color match it off of the chip. I feel like that way it can be the closest to the current color. But it also might be easier to repaint the whole ceiling.
Kayla! Parable of the Talents, sequel to Parable of the Sower, was released in 1998!
Oh Be Scared of Everything sounds like exactly my thing! Will look into that - what a lovely surprise to find!
We got some good advice as first time home owners: take a small paint chip from the surface you're trying to color match and take that with you. The paint department had a machine that matches the color for you, dunno if yours will but worth a shot 🤷
Ann Patchett is the best. I need to go back and read some of her older books, so I'm glad to hear good things about The Magician's Assistant!
wellll you gave A Tale for the Time Being 4 stars but I also love "My Year of Meats" by Ruth Ozeki so I may as well recommend for 1998 :3
Ooooh video idea. Match your outfit to the book you’re reading or pick your book from your tbr are based on your outfit.
your video ideas are so creative!!
Alsoooo, your hair looks stunninggggg ✨
That’s is what I was just thinking too!
Jacqueline Wilson is my favourite authour , cool to see you read one of her books. Makes sense that it reads younger she mainly writes middle grade and her ya leans towards that.
Hi ! I work at home depot, and I think you should return those paint cans (tell the service desk it’s the wrong color for your ceiling, they’ll take it back no prob. We take returns and tint them then put it on an oops shelf at a discounted price so it won’t go to waste) then take like a dime or quarter size paint chip off your ceiling and get a color match! It’s nearly impossible to match it the way you’re doing haha trust me and best of luck to fixing your ceiling !! You can look up videos about how to smoothly take out a paint chip :)
About the Tru Fru, it should be in the convenience snack/candy area or possibly with the dried fruits/nuts. My oldest is obsessed with them, they're freeze-dried, not frozen. Took me awhile to find them bc I kept looking in the freezer aisles.
Also might want to avoid them if you're avoiding allergens bc they use heavy preservatives. I'm allergic to sulfites, I break out in hives from dried fruit/wine. Developed when I was 30 out of nowhere.
there are frozen ones *and* freeze-dried ones, it seems like my city/province (country? lol) only carries the frozen from what I can tell.
I was 9 in 1997 and I have such vivid memories of all of these movies you mentioned! I also love that you shared to the internet you kissed your JTT poster at night 😂😂 I did that to my Hanson poster lol
Cottage cheese is actually paneer which is kind off staple of North Indian food. You should check out some healthy Indian recipes. I’m sure you will like it !
my birth year! 😄excited to watch this
For 1998 I’d like to throw ghost world in the rink.
Parable of the Talents also came out that year & you loved the first one :)
My personal favourite would probably be If You Give A Pig A Pancake tho lol
I gave Ann Patchet’s book Tom Lake 5 stars (audiobook incredibly narrated by Meryl Streep), because of the writing, the characters, the dialogue (which Patchet has a real skill writing), and the feelings it gave me. But I agree, Patchet’s books are mostly “slice of life” books that don’t do all that much aside from bring us into someone’s life.
Omggg Jaqueline Wilson was my everything when I was a kid 😭 I've always wanted to reread her books as an adult
yay from another ‘97 baby!
When i was a kid i was obsessed with Girls under Pressure (the third or fourth book), it talks about eating disorders and it changed my life
My favourite book of all time is a 1998 book! Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters. I don't usually read historical fiction, but Sarah Waters is the exception.
I was going to suggest this too!!
A 1998 modern classic is The Hours. Would be general fiction again, but you might love it. Beautiful writing and nice stream of consciousness style
In The Miso Soup was one of my favorite books last year so it was so enjoyable seeing your reactions to it 😂
If it's not already on your radar, Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler came out in 1998!
I saw The Pact by Jodi Picoult in your scroll through 1998 options at the end! One of my most favorite authors - if you haven’t given her a try yet, would recommend!
Yay!!!! I loooooove Ann Patchett. I’m currently trying to get through her back list. ❤
For the 1998 vlog please read Autobiography of Red!!! It's so so good and I think you'll really enjoy it!
My picks for 1998: “Daughter of Blood” by Anne Bishop & “Parable of the Talents” by Octavia E. Butler
My favourite booktuber loved my favourite author, a big win for me personally!!!!
Spice World was seriously one of my favorite movies 😍
And omg Devon Sawa, Benecio del Toro, Romy and Michelle! I’m only a month older than you so this was my year 7 as well 😂
I've read one Ann Patchett (The Dutch House) a few years back and felt exactly the same. She has a very arresting writing style even though I couldn't name what about it is so engaging. I can hardly remember anything about The Dutch House's plot but yeah! I think if you liked The Magicians Assistant you'll probably like the rest of her stuff but I'm also no expert!
Have you tried just the flat white ceiling paint from whatever brand the two cans left in your place are? I would imagine that would be what the painters would have used, especially if they were painting to sell/rent! But also it’s possible the paint has just changed colour over time 😬 good luck!
Jacqueline Wilson is a UK icon! My Sister Jodie traumatised me a little growing up, JW definitely covers a lot of hard hitting topics in a digestible way for younger kids. My 1998 rec is Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters!!
I just bought miso soup I’m so excited to read it. It sounds interesting and unhinged? and I love the Waterstones cover. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts x
the paint has probably changed color over time so you'd need to do a full repaint or some paint stores can match the color it is now if you bring in a chip of paint !
I used to love cottage cheese but in middle school my older sister made up a story about “the cottage cheese man” that I would definitely categorize as body horror, and she would add to it every time cottage cheese was served. (I swear we’re best friends 😅)
I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb for 1998. His character studies are amazing. Also, Romy and Michele does not get enough love! A classic!!
For 1998, I LOVED Digital Fortress by Dan Brown. It’s high stakes thriller with national security, espionage and cryptography with a small subplot of romance. It’s very readable and fast paced.
For 1998: (the year I was born)
King Leopold’s Ghost
The Poisonwood Bible
and Filth!!!!!
Love this series so much
i just read Filth - what an absolute question mark of a reading experience. I liked it a lot and I agree it should totally be part of the series
Kayla & Rob moments are the best! 🙃
Sometimes a book is a five star because of the experience you had while reading the book and that's okay. It doesn't have to be a literary masterpiece for it to be a 5 star.
As for books for '98 I'm stumped cause I have two books I enjoyed but I don't know if you would but I'll list them here just in case you need more options or something does strike your fancy: Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and When the Wind Blows by James Patterson.
Jacqueline Wilson is definitely middle grade! I remember reading a bunch of her books ☺️
The only suggestion I got from my Goodreads is Parable of the Talents, which I'm guessing is already on your radar.
I was obsessed with Hanson in 1997 😊
Omg I can't believe I forgot to talk about 1997 music!! Hanson 🥰🥰🥰
tbh what a great year. Jan Agaton was also released in 1997 🤪but most importantly, THE MCFLURRY?! incredible
You and the McFlurry, equally impactful inventions of the decade 🏆
I think what you mean is, that book is a 5 stars because it does what it wanted to do perfectly.
I feel like Jacqueline Wilson books read pretty young, but always touch on subjects that are important for young people to read about like grooming, grief, depression, death, and just generally growing up and how that affects relationships
i was also a JTT girlie. i joined his fan club and might still have the autographed photo they sent 🤣
I gave The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing a 5 star, but I don't know if it holds up. Thanks for another great blog. :-)
What’s really insane is a couple days ago I remembered this show I used to watch called girls in love and went into a deep dive, watching clips of it on youtube. I never realised it was based on a book. And now I’m watching this. What the hell. So weird I love how connected we are hahaha
My 1998 five star read was The Poisonwood Bible. One of my favorite books of all time.
I love this series so much! So, fun!!
