I feel like most people who tell reviewers to be more grateful doesn't really realize that the publishers aren't sending books to be nice. It's marketing. They want the reviewer to work for them for the prize of a free copy, and which is terrible hourly pay if you set up, film, edit, take a picture, read it etc. Reviewers should value their own time and not give free publicity to things they don't care about just cause it was sent to them.
Absolutely with you on this. As someone who LOVES books and reading but struggles to fit their purchase in my budget, I still hate the idea of unsolicited books. I would feel so under pressure to read and respond, which is and should be seen as a disturbing level of manipulation from a marketing perspective rather than a nice perk of the job.
Agreed three thousand and I think it’s lovely she asks them to send it to someone who would enjoy them more. That’s amazing. I’d have a hard time because I’m such an eclectic reader.
THIS!!! I have never understood when followers complain about cheaters getting things “for free” or for getting paid for what they do. We are all out here just trying to secure our own bag, and we should cheer on people for succeeding and reaping the benefits!!!
I’m actually screaming that you mentioned me! This is the boost I need to actually upload videos again. And of course I follow you....you’re the BookTube Queen 👑 💕
i feel like i just sat through a well thought out movie with different timelines, i think i’ll be giving this movie 5/5 stars? i laughed a lot so that was great. plus i had snacks and didn’t notice how long this was until it was over 🖤
In case no one has told you lately, thank you. I can’t imagine all the hard work this takes, amongst all the other hats you wear. Appreciate you! PS: you absolutely ARE the girl from the book cover :)
I got this notification on my phone and the title was cut off. So I thought this was going to be reading books from cancelled authors. Words cannot express the relief I'm feeling right now.
Ok but the reading like someone who looks like you concept is something I low-key still want to see. Also do you still remember the site? Cause as creepy (and possibly narcissistic) as it sounds, I'm curious to see how many people out there look like me 👀
As for your favorite weird books having under 3.5 on Goodreads - I've recently got into the horror genre, and I've noticed in general horror/ weird books tend to have wildly low ratings because in extreme emotions it causes in readers - therefore, extreme ratings. In contrast, literary fiction tends to get a generally high average rating, because even if the person didn't love it, it will be okay 3 star-read for them, there was nothing to shock/ disgust them strong enough to give a book 1 star.
I was so confused today when I saw you had tagged me. I am not convinced we look that much alike, but I'm so glad you read and enjoyed The Girl Who Drank the Moon! I know I don't have many books on that GR shelf. I created it on a whim one day and then promptly forgot about it! haha. As for my name. Oh golly. When I first started my channel a few years ago I was selling Jamberry nails and thought I'd talk about that too. Well, I stuck to just the book talks but got comfortable with the name and didn't want to change it. I know it's confusing now. Oh well. Thanks for a fun video of not-videos! haha. You are always so creative. Oh and yeah, we don't have very much crossover in our reading except for middle grade. You were right with that.
Thanks for being such an amazing sport Krista, I'm so glad I found your channel through this process and look forward to getting more middle grade recs from you! Also your channel name is so cute and my over analysis was just too ridiculous to not include haha, now being in my right mind in makes perfect sense. ♥
Hi Krista. I am subscribed to both you and Kayla and was surprised to see you pop up on here today. My book taste is actually pretty broad, so I appreciate getting recommendations from both of you and just enjoy both of your videos in general.
Lol Jamaica! James! She loves books and makes jam!! 😂 that might be a crossover for you Krista! Would love to see some homemade jam recipes lol. Love you and Lala!
The footage of you trying to find the people that looked like you was the best part 😂 "we can do this again at some point next year"??? You don't need to say it twice girl! We'll all be here patiently waiting for the sequel to the great Lala-Movie 😏
I love this, finally an answer to the question(s) that have haunted me. I love how you were still able to make use of the tbrs from cancelled videos to make a whole new video concept out of it 👌💖
Video idea: Books Kayla should like but probably won’t (based on viewers’ opinions) Books: -Devolution by Max Brooks (why...survival book) -Good Morning, Midnight (why...a little bit of space) -A Guide to Being Born (why... weird...the weirdest book ever! O and short story collection) -A Mirror in the Sky (why... weird and a little space
I think Lala's feelings on "Good Morning, Midnight" will be super similar to "The Book of M" - pitched like "Station Eleven", but has no intricacy and nuance of that book
#3 PREACH. I’m an agent and appreciate this SO much. There are so many reasons you are one of my favorite booktubers, and your thoughtfulness and care in explaining this is definitely a big reason
Omggg I'm SO happy you loved Catherine House. I picked it up to participate in the Literally Dead book club and it ended up being my favorite book of the year. So many people disliked it so I was nervous you would too! This confirms our reading tastes align and your recs will never let me down!
Kayla, on a serious note, being in the US right now is awful and I am so grateful for 80 minutes of distraction. Secondarily, how do you keep track of clips long term? Do you have all the clips from old videos on a drive somewhere? Do you pull clips off of UA-cam to reuse?
PLEASE continue this trend, and don’t ever feel bad about long videos! This was INCREDIBLE and you kept me engaged for the entire 80 minutes!!! Nothing makes me happier than a long BooksandLala video to watch in the morning!
I just LOVE that you take so many things into account before when creating videos. Your process is so admirable because it shows your morals and values in life. I really appreciate you and the time you take to create content that is both engaging and well thought out. My only regret is not finding and subscribing to you sooner!
Love a long video! What I think is really cool about this one is that it gives us an idea of what goes on behind the scenes in booktube and the thought process behind your videos.
The way that I've re-watched this video now three times, because you reacting to the 'reading books of people that look like me' stays gold! I would honestly watch all your stoned video ideas.
I like the way you got recommended Catherine House, that would be an interesting video idea where you wait for people to recommend books to you unprompted. Like you could name it something like "reading your recommendations without you knowing it"
honestly, i need more long videos from you! if you feel up to it that is. no pressure! just saying that you’re so insightful, bring discussions that need to be had sometimes and tbh, i just like listening to you in general
movie of the year! haha but in seriousness, what a massive job to edit, big kudos! i've been watching your old vlogs the past few days as company while i eat, draw, or just chill out, so this long video was such a pleasant surprise for me :') (and i did watch to the end, dont underestimate us haha)
About Slay being realistic, there's actually a high school near me that's entirely based on IT studies. They have a crap ton of programming classes and even ones solely for designing videogames. I think in our times it's definitely realistic!
Okay but programming a complex video game is something that takes years of development to entire companies with infinitely larger resources, time and experience than a 17 year old. Not to mention purchasing and maintaining the servers hosting an online multiplayer game that's super popular.
😂😂😂 this was the most entertaining video yet, especially the last scrapped video concept! I happily gave up 1hr+ of my time to watch this and would do it all over again in a heartbeat
I love this video!! I so appreciate how analytical you are. It really challenges me, not only in my own creative process, but also when thinking about books and the community surrounding. Thank you for putting so much time and energy into these videos!
Oooh, I guessed the 2018 Booker long list on your September TBR. I would suggest you rethink unhauling Snap. I read the entire long list that year, and the reason I decided to was because the judges chose a bonkers (in the context of the Booker) selection. Snap is a thriller, and in the context of a thriller is great, in the context (yo, context is everything, right?) of a literary fiction prize, it doesn’t stand up to the rest, which is why the Goodreads rating is skewed. I don’t know which others you read for the video, but if you can get a copy of Everything Under, it’s a queer retelling of a mix of Greek Myth and German Fairytale. Milkman won, and I would recommend it as an audiobook, it sounds weird and experimental, and some people reviewed it saying it was a unlikely dystopian fiction, but the events are a very real portrait of what life was like during the Troubles (which if we’re honest haven’t completely disappeared) in Northern Ireland. The Overstory is breathtaking, but I’m not sure if it’s your jam. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text... I really needed this vlog this evening. I should actually be in Canada on honeymoon right now, so this is almost as good!
victoria1936 aww thanks 😊 We were supposed to be doing a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver, and we’d be on Vancouver Island right now. One day we’ll do it, so on the plus side we still have the trip to look forward to!
Looking forward to part 2 next year 😂 loved the outfits and the chai and comforting knowledge that you don’t drive with a very out of date eye prescription 😂😂
I do not read books, but will ALWAYS watch Kayla's video. Proof that it's more than just about the books. When other youtubers talk about how hard their job is.. yes, I do roll my eyes after month of them uploading mediocre challenge videos and q&as. But with Kayla, I believe it. Just look how much freaking work she puts into 1 video. 👏👏👏
You’re really treating us today! Yes I’m here for it- especially “The Girl Who Drank The Moon” because I really loved that book personally! Anyways I’m going to watch this now :)
I love your video concepts so much. And the high idea is very weird but also funny and I would have still watched and enjoyed the video 🤷🏼♀️ I‘m about 30min into this video and will probably never pick up any of the books mentioned since my taste is pretty different but am still going to binge the video to the end because of your presentation. You make every video into its own story ☺️
I'm 30 and only recently learned that the USPS does a special, lower rate if you tell them you're shipping books! I know that's not helpful to you up in Canada, but maybe someone scrolling through here can use the tip 😊
the way she almost said “give her a chance” but changed it to “give myself a chance to love her” shows how Kayla is so thoughtful in everything she does and is exactly why I STAN
I think that you would absolutely love The Water Cure! Isolation, weird cult vibes, and complicated sister relationships. I can't wait for you to read that one!
Kayla you are so beautiful and I love your sense of humor. I’ve been following you for years now maybe 5 or 6 idk but I really like the books you like too. Hugs and kisses
The way you described Catherine House reminds me of Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergei Dyachenko, it also has a strange school setting and it's very weird and kind of plot-less, but it is amazing.
I'd love to see you reading the Canada Reads nominees next year! Now I really want to read Catherine House haha This was fun, and I think the looks like you video would have been fun.
your footage for the reading fave books of people who look like you...FUNNIEST shit I've ever seen. I've been cackling for half an hour. reminds me of the videos of me and my friends high in college lol. thank you for sharing it, the greatest gift
I‘m sick at home and need to go to bed now but I will finish watching these last 40 min tomorrow so I’ll have something to look forward to 😍 you‘re amazing!
Such an amazing video!! I've been looking forward to watching it ever since you posted about it on Instagram.. but since I watch my subscriptions chronologically it took me a couple of days to get there / catch up. What a genius idea for a vlog of secret TBR books based on those videos you cancelled. I loved The Girl Who Drank the Moon, I'm glad you liked it too.
KAYLA??? THIS A FULL LENGTH FILM!! we are all so thankful for you and your ability to direct a movie ✨
Oh my god kayla youre amazing
IDEA: reading like my favorite authors.
If you like the stuff the write, maybe you will love the stuff they read
+
Sounds like such a cool idea!
I would love to see a video like that from Kayla🎡
Love this idea!
Yes! I'd love to see Kayla read A S King's favourites!
Tap those 3 little dots, put playback speed on 2x, and now it's only a 40 minute video. 😆 You got this. 💪
Nah the longer the better...i love when you post these kinds of videos
I already do this to most other youtube videos
put it on .5 speed and its Endgame:The Kayla Edition
I only ever watch videos on x2 speed anyway 🤣
👎 no 😅

That's completely accurate and something that doesn't get discussed much.
Best comment

Robbie's "look who looks beautiful today" is SO CUTE
I know! And right when she was questioning how she looked! 😭 the cutest
...
😭 such a gem
😭😭😭🥰🥰🥰
Fabulous. His comments made me smile so big. :D
The fact that Kayla doesn’t shy away from 1 hour+ long content sparks joy
high kayla is my favorite genre of comedy
I’m actually screaming that you mentioned me! This is the boost I need to actually upload videos again. And of course I follow you....you’re the BookTube Queen 👑 💕

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO:
THE KAYLA MOVIE!!!
"You probably didn't make it till the end"
Um, excuse you. You underestimate how much I stan and I'm offended.
BahanaNahana same lol 😂😂
In case no one has told you lately, thank you. I can’t imagine all the hard work this takes, amongst all the other hats you wear. Appreciate you!
PS: you absolutely ARE the girl from the book cover :)
80 WHOLE MINUTES OF KAYLA CONTENT ON THIS FINE DAY??? We truly don’t deserve you.
I got this notification on my phone and the title was cut off. So I thought this was going to be reading books from cancelled authors. Words cannot express the relief I'm feeling right now.
AN HOUR AND 20 MINUTES?!? THIS IS THE CONTENT I SIGNED UP FOR KAYLA!!! 🎉🎉
Imagine trying to explain to a stoned Kayla that the lady just really likes jam... 😂
I just giggled aloud honestly
The discussion to the “people who look like me” video would be that it’s HILARIOUS! 🤣🤣🤣 That content would’ve been gold!
OMG your TBR closet is killing us! LOL! Love it! 😂♥😂♥
Literally calculating how much of this video I can watch before I have to go to work
Hahaha same but then with going to bed🙃
Yes we love a Kayla feature film!!!!!!🥰🥰🥰
Ok but the reading like someone who looks like you concept is something I low-key still want to see. Also do you still remember the site? Cause as creepy (and possibly narcissistic) as it sounds, I'm curious to see how many people out there look like me 👀

You should do a reading books with characters that have your same name,
I was halfway through rewatching your “Videos I’ve Cancelled” video and this was posted 😮. Can’t wait!
45:18 «Wow, look who looks beautiful today!” excuse me can I have your husband please 😭😭

Krista, you need to start making jam now or else we will all be disappointed XD :P

"we can do this again at some point next year"??? You don't need to say it twice girl! We'll all be here patiently waiting for the sequel to the great Lala-Movie 😏
Books and Lala movies are my favorite movies! 🥰
The Girl Who Drank the Moon is my FAVORITE middle grade!! I laughed and cried and felt all the emotions. So glad you liked it!
I took a nap and woke up to The Cancelled Files, A Lala Production. Amen.
"Erotic stories for Punjabi widows" needs to be a video on its own. Please.
Lace Pendragon This is actually a fantastic book. Not what you’d expect. It’s heartwarming.
Yes! I loved this book.
Do a closet clean out. I have watched them all (twice 😂) and they were so good
Naw she don’t want to
SO good
Even if it was just a one month edition or something I'd be so happpppyyyy
@@dbookdragon Yes even if it's only for a single month.
I love this, finally an answer to the question(s) that have haunted me. I love how you were still able to make use of the tbrs from cancelled videos to make a whole new video concept out of it 👌💖
Video idea:
Books Kayla should like but probably won’t (based on viewers’ opinions)
Books:
-Devolution by Max Brooks (why...survival book)
-Good Morning, Midnight (why...a little bit of space)
-A Guide to Being Born (why... weird...the weirdest book ever! O and short story collection)
-A Mirror in the Sky (why... weird and a little space
Basically comment below books you want to recommend Kayla but worry she won’t like them.
Omg yess... I recommend Inland by Kat Rosenfield bc it is very weird
The holiday by T. M. Logan (domestic thriller/mystery, friendship group, villa holiday sort of secluded)
I think Lala's feelings on "Good Morning, Midnight" will be super similar to "The Book of M" - pitched like "Station Eleven", but has no intricacy and nuance of that book
Viktoriia Green excellent point but space!
#3 PREACH. I’m an agent and appreciate this SO much. There are so many reasons you are one of my favorite booktubers, and your thoughtfulness and care in explaining this is definitely a big reason
Thank you, Kayla for making this stressed, overworked, exhausted English teacher's day. Your videos always make my day brighter!

Came for the books. Stayed for the chai making.
I watched every minute of this video in normal speed, and absolutely loved it. Please don't ever shy away from making extra long content!!
PLEASE continue this trend, and don’t ever feel bad about long videos! This was INCREDIBLE and you kept me engaged for the entire 80 minutes!!! Nothing makes me happier than a long BooksandLala video to watch in the morning!
Im literally watching this for the second time because i need more kayla content. Also Kayla's eyes are insanely beautiful
The fact that you just changed your hair and put on glasses and you turned into a book character?! LOVE
Books that have been Kayla’s TBR shelf for 74 years, seeing closet books be read first, be like: 👁👄👁
I just LOVE that you take so many things into account before when creating videos. Your process is so admirable because it shows your morals and values in life. I really appreciate you and the time you take to create content that is both engaging and well thought out. My only regret is not finding and subscribing to you sooner!

honestly, i need more long videos from you! if you feel up to it that is. no pressure! just saying that you’re so insightful, bring discussions that need to be had sometimes and tbh, i just like listening to you in general
Nothing like a feature film from Kayla to brighten up my Monday! :)
Kayla, you’re just the truest UA-cam hero and we don’t deserve you! More secret TBRs please!
Ending work early so I can watch this FEATURE FILM 🎞
Future secret TBR idea: reading books whose cover characters you look like.
movie of the year! haha but in seriousness, what a massive job to edit, big kudos! i've been watching your old vlogs the past few days as company while i eat, draw, or just chill out, so this long video was such a pleasant surprise for me :') (and i did watch to the end, dont underestimate us haha)

The Overstory is breathtaking, but I’m not sure if it’s your jam. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text... I really needed this vlog this evening. I should actually be in Canada on honeymoon right now, so this is almost as good!
Rambling Anna this was a fantastic comment lol i appreciate all these suggestions! where were you supposed to be on your honeymoon?
victoria1936 aww thanks 😊 We were supposed to be doing a road trip from Calgary to Vancouver, and we’d be on Vancouver Island right now. One day we’ll do it, so on the plus side we still have the trip to look forward to!
YAAAAASSSSS THE LENGTH. You QUEEN. Can't wait to sit down after work and watch this whole ASS MOVIE.
Awe. Robbie commenting on your outfit and how good you looked! That's so sweet.
Looking forward to part 2 next year 😂 loved the outfits and the chai and comforting knowledge that you don’t drive with a very out of date eye prescription 😂😂
I will be rewatching this video 2nd time, for sure, because I spent my 1st watch pausing all the time to add all these weird cool books on my TBR!
Thank you for the video and transparency. I learned a lot about publishing and marketing. Slay is on my TBR.
I enjoyed the multiple timelines. 👏🏾
Kayla!!! I love the conversations you’re starting in this frickin VIDEOOO!!! I love that you’re self-aware and thinking of the bigger picture❤️
I was SO EXCITED to see that you picked up The Inheritance Games - it was my most anticipated release of the year and I loooooooooved it
the books and jam clip is the best thing i’ve seen in years. Jamaica! 😂😂
You’re really treating us today! Yes I’m here for it- especially “The Girl Who Drank The Moon” because I really loved that book personally! Anyways I’m going to watch this now :)
I had run out of content to watch and then this appeared. THANK YOU, honest best hour and a half of my day
I think you're so considerate with what you accept and what you keep. It's so interesting to hear your thought process
I didn’t know this!!
the way she almost said “give her a chance” but changed it to “give myself a chance to love her” shows how Kayla is so thoughtful in everything she does and is exactly why I STAN
These longer videos are a blessing ✨ sending love from South Africa 💛
I really like this video, you have such unique video concepts i haven't seen on other booktube channels ! you're amazing
I think that you would absolutely love The Water Cure! Isolation, weird cult vibes, and complicated sister relationships. I can't wait for you to read that one!
hey, I was just binge-rewatching all your vlogs when I saw the notification!
Kayla you are so beautiful and I love your sense of humor. I’ve been following you for years now maybe 5 or 6 idk but I really like the books you like too. Hugs and kisses
I'm getting snacks ready,, because this is literally a movie👁👄👁💕
The way you described Catherine House reminds me of Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergei Dyachenko, it also has a strange school setting and it's very weird and kind of plot-less, but it is amazing.
I'd love to see you reading the Canada Reads nominees next year!
Now I really want to read Catherine House haha
This was fun, and I think the looks like you video would have been fun.
Had so much fun watching this. Please do this again. It's just so good
I started getting an iced chai latte with pumpkin cold foam on top. It’s delicious and probably my favorite fall themed drink.
Thank you for this video....I can't imagine how much work this was!!!
We are so blessed to have you in this world 😍😍
someone should ad this feature film to imdb. i want to rate it 10/10.
your footage for the reading fave books of people who look like you...FUNNIEST shit I've ever seen. I've been cackling for half an hour. reminds me of the videos of me and my friends high in college lol. thank you for sharing it, the greatest gift
"my room's a mess and i'm not wearing a bra" is me 100% of the time
'My room is a mess and I'm not wearing a bra' Story of my life!
I could not be happier when I saw the length of this video YES am so happy!!
I‘m sick at home and need to go to bed now but I will finish watching these last 40 min tomorrow so I’ll have something to look forward to 😍 you‘re amazing!
Thank goodness for your willingness to edit these because I am here for the feature-length film videos🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I am literally crying, the favorite books from people who look like you section is hilarious!
I love how intentional you are about what videos you produce
An hour and twenty minutes!!!????? WE'VE BEEN BLESSED
Omg yes this is just what my sick self needs, an hour and 20 mins of kayla. Thank you 😊
Such an amazing video!!
I really enjoyed Kelly Barnhill’s short story collection and I feel like it would be up your alley!
Also my nose runs whenever I brush my teeth too!
I totally understand and agree with what you’re saying about unsolicited books!
