Kayla I just wanted to say you're one of the only influencers I follow who actually respected the writers' and actors' guidelines to not promote any struck work during the strikes. I remember you talking about videos you were waiting for the strikes to end to post, and I'm not sure if this was one of them, but I just wanted to let you know, as a WGA member, your support is seen and appreciated!
omg hi!!! ✿ As a small creator I am so honored to be included, thank you ( ੭˙ᗜ˙)੭✧˖° ♡ my "book recs based on movies" videos are some of my personal favorites, so I'm really glad you enjoyed them and got some recs. I have a script for part 3 of that series in the works! I do think We Had To Remove This Post got mismarketed a bit and ended up underwhelming many readers seeking a disturbing read with explicit descriptions of violence. But, I really enjoyed that the book didn't go into detail about the content they were moderating and instead focused on the horror of what that can do to a person's psyche. Also very interesting you likened it to Big Swiss, as I loved that one too!
I was so excited to find your channel through this video and have already watched some videos of yours. Your book recommendations are absolutely brilliant and I actually read 'Pew' based on your recommendation. I gave it 5 stars, absolutely loved it and even did a lot of research into the inspiration and background of the book after reading which is something I rarely do due to ADHD. So thank you for that recommendation and I look forward to watching and reading more
i had the same thoughts about We Had To Remove This Post! i found it so interesting that so many readers were disappointed about graphic content not being included, when the message (imo) is about our desensitization to violence and voyeurism.
@@sarahlopod EXACTLY. I think by not explicitly describing the graphic content, it forced the reader to fill in the blanks and almost use their own experience with consuming graphic content to imagine what these characters were having to view every day. Don't get me wrong, I do love me some graphic horror, but I think that if the author had explicitly described the horrors these characters were viewing, it would've been a disservice to this particular story and detracted from the psychological horror aspect of it imo.
"I have no idea when I'm gonna read this, but I own it now." Kayla, this is why we love you. You couldn't have said it better. I say that to myself pretty much anytime I buy a book.
I loved the seven year slip! It actually reminds me of the lake house with Sandra bullock and Keanu reeves!! Where they live in the same house but years apart.
I think an interesting future TBR could be related to something you said - you have people give recommendations for books that are similar to movies based on plot and then other people give recommendations that are similar to movies based on vibes... and see which one you give higher ratings to? I feel like you as a reader have shifted in the last 5 years I've been watching this channel!! I remember you talking a lot about very specific things you like in books (ie overly specific book recommendations type deal) but you've definitely shifted away from that.. probs because you got so many book recommendations that had those elements and ended up being not 5 stars. Although I guess that analyzing 5 star reads video was only last year! Anyways, as someone who also likes psychoanalyzing my own reading, it's been really fun to watch :)
Better recommendations if you liked Bodies Bodies Bodies, as they're isolation trope/"And Then There Were None"-inspired YA thrillers featuring influencers and Gen Z culture: Never Coming Home by Kate Williams, People to Follow by Olivia Worley (I mentored this one!), and my 2024 YA thriller The Bitter End also falls into this oevre! (happy to send you an ARC if you want one!) Loved The Family Game but just such a strange choice for that movie.
My two favorite movies of all time are the breakfast club and Donnie Darko, so I’m definitely adding house of leaves to my tbr and hopefully I can find book recommendations based on the breakfast club
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. Such a beautiful novella! I continue to be impressed how the author can convey so much in 110 pages. It's not Christmassy but it does take place in the lead-up to Christmas in 1985 Ireland. Highly recommend!
Because you love books that ACTUALLY have games, I highly recommend Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington. Its very Hunger Games meets Squid Games and Nope in a prestigious school setting
There's a book called Come Join Our Disease by Sam Byers (I think it only came out in the UK) that starts off very similarly to We Had to Remove This Post but ends up going in a completely different direction. It explores similar themes, just with a lot more bodily excrement (like, a lot). It's hard to recommend but for someone who wanted This Post to be longer and doesn't mind things getting gross, they might get something out of Our Disease. Felt Jen Beagin-ish to me, too.
Ginger Snaps is also one of my favourite movies. I reckon you could build an entire readalike TBR with weird sisterly relationship books: Sisters by Daisy Johnson, A Slice of Cherry by Dia Reeves, The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill, and The Rust Maidens by Gwendolyn Kiste. That sounds like a weird good time to me 😄
I know it’s a classic but have you ever read A Christmas Carol? It honestly is the OG Christmas ghost story and a lot more creepy and unsettling than most people realize (I think due to all the retellings). My husband and I always listen to the audiobook of it on our drive to my in laws (Tim Curry narrates the version we listen to). Just a thought!
This video was exactly what I needed tonight, now I need to go find a book rec for my own favorite movies! As for Christmassy recs: The anthology 'Hark! the Herald Angels Scream' edited by Christopher Golden might be a fun one, it's on my own TBR for the end of the year. Last year I read 'Once Upon a Winter: A Folk and Fairy Tale Anthology' which was great to read with a cup of hot chocolate while it was snowing outside. Looking forward to Falalalala-mas already!
I 100% agree about The Seven Year Slip. I wanted to give it 5 ⭐ so bad, but it just didn't have enough pages dedicated to the relationship. It was a strong 4.25 though and I feel like it's a good recommendation for a lot of people.
Knock Knock Open Wide is one of my favorite horror reads of the year, if not of all time. It's so creepy and immersive in a similar way as House of Leaves (which I also love). Hope you enjoy it!
• Such sharp teeth by Rachel Harrison (Ginger Snaps) • Goddess of Filth by V. Castro (Jennifer’s Body) • Ace of Spades (Get Out meets Gossip Girl apparently. Haven’t read it) You didn’t mention Lost Boys, but if you like that movie then I recommend In Nightfall by Suzanne Young.
I would love to see the flip side of this video next year. Like you can reread your favorite books and watch movies and see if you think it's a good recommendation. For example instead of reading The Raven Boys because you liked 'movie A' you watch movie A because you like the book.
I LOVE Mother! & Whiplash, two of my absolute faves! If you haven't seen it yet I wanna recommend a horror movie for you called The Night House - beautiful movie that deals with grief. An unexpected favourite movie for me this year!💜
My husband is the same way. He's never raised his voice around me or at me, but if you go out to the garage while he's working on something, you will hear him cursing something out lol. 😂
about time is my favourite film so maybe I need to read the seven year slip haha. my other favourite is Emma (2020) idk how you'd read a book like that though apart from just reading Emma (which i have already read obviously heh) so if anyone does have any recs then lmk 🤲🥰
I would've compared we can never leave this place to pan's labyrinth WAY before I even thought it was similar to mother in any fashion. I swear, my brain works different 😹 this was a fun video!
Loved the Seven Year Slip, and highly recommend reading the authors note, as it colors the book in a new way! It’s a delightful romance how it all comes together in time.
if you like but i’m a cheerleader i’d probably suggest fierce femmes and notorious liars. its not an exact one-to-one but the vibes are close enough imo
I’m sure you’ve probably read this before, but “Different Seasons” by Stephen King has a shortish story for each season. The winter one is “The Breathing Method” and is one of my favorites!
I always thought that the summary of The Seven Year Slip reminded me of The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. I actually love both that movie and About Time. I haven’t read the book yet, but I’m curious as to which one I think it’ll be more like.
I'm probably weird since can actually come up with a definitive top four list of movies. I'm going to guess that looking for a book like Fantasia (1940) is pretty much a lost cause though.
Does anyone have any books similar to the plot/vibes in Malignant? Going into Mary, I thought it would be similar based on the synopsis, but it didn't really scratch the itch.
Ashley Poston is a new must read for adult romance. Seven Year Slip was a solid 4 (for similar reasons) and The Dead Romantics was a 5 ⭐ all-time favorite. I know The Dead Romantics was on your TBR shelf for a while, I really think you would love that one. The romance is more balanced within the larger story, but even the non-romance plot is A+.
I agree, I came to see if anyone recommended The Dead Romantics. Because 7 year slip was a 4.25 for me, but same as you The Dead Romantics is an all time favorite of mine!
Hey Kayla! I saw on Goodreads that you read 21 Things That You May Not Know About the Indian Act, and I was wondering in what video did you review it? The link in your GR review doesn't work.
Forever and always looking for book recomendations that are Bill and Ted/Wayne's World but with weird queer woman/girls if anyone has recommendations. Not enough funny loser girl friendships in my books tbh
Funny to see someone reading We had to remove this post by Hannah Bervoets. Originally this was a bookweek gift here in the Netherlands. Every year we have week called bookweek in which anyone that buys a book (for I believe at least 15 euros) gets a free little novella that you can only get through purchasing another book in that week and after that you can't get it anymore. The Family Game is just Ready or Not turned into a book. But the movie is 10000000x better, even though the book literally ripped off scenes from the film (like her shoes and falling in the well)
When I finished Fall of the House of Usher I couldn't stop thinking it was so similar to Sign Here by Claudia Lux. Dark family secrets? No one is who you think they are? Hot but also terrifying mysterious woman? Weird time stuff?

such a good book

Thanks for using my song!
We had to remove this post was so infuriating to me and so underwhelming UGH the ending pissed me off
I agree with everything you said about Family Game. I feel heard.
Based on the film Ginger Snaps you should definitely read Red Hood by Elana K Arnold!! Both are a dark supernatural take on puberty/menstruation/womanhood. Red Hood is WEIRD and fucked up and I think you'd like it!

Christmas cozy mysteries. They're almost always short and very on theme. Lol
Agatha Christie had some short Christmas centric cases🤔 I had a collection of hers, but since i dont like short stories I'm not a good judge whether these are considered worth reading. My collection was called Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, I believe, in case anyone's interested 😊
if you like the 7 year slip you should watch The boathouse
For the movie Thirteen, I would highly recommend The Goddess of Fireflies by Geneviève Pettersen, translated by Neil Smith!
Ooooooo
Wonderful video, thank you.
