    - Ep.95: Erica and Jiun got married in the Philippines and were living happily there. However, Jiun had to move back to Korea for his work. So it's only been six months that the couple came to live in Korea. Erica lived an abundant life in the Philippines, staying at a villa with a swimming pool and gym. However, her life has turned around after coming to Korea. It's because of the high cost of living in Korea. She became very stingy after coming to Korea.

    Can people stop commenting about her accent? Her first language is Filipino (Tagalog)and her second is english. Most Filipinos KNOW how to speak english but not all can have an English accent/have perfect grammar. The important thing is that she was able to express herself and communicate clearly. It's sad she cant get that English teaching job but do people really have to be mean about it? Are we also gonna ignore the fact that she graduated with a degree in Nursing? Really hope she looks for jobs related to that. We Filipinos are v hard working and loving but its so sad that we get to experience racism and that we are looked down upon. People need to be more open and stop judging based on race. I know Korea is slowly addressing these issues. I hope Erica is doing much better now! 💗 STOP THE HATE AND THE MEAN COMMENTS. Do you get fed/paid when you hate on someone? Lol

    What's wrong of being a Filipino? I can't understand why they hate/dislike Southeast Asians so much. In the Philippines if foreigners come most of Filipinos try their best to interact but when a Filipino goes to some other countries, they won't even bother to look. This is so sad hearing her life there and have been discriminated so much just because of her nationality.😭😭😭😭

      From what I observed, I think it's just the way she speaks (her accent maybe). And she was just stating that she can't speak English. I think it's just a case of language barrier and differences

    • @jjyviolette9177
      @jjyviolette9177 3 роки тому

      @@ayalangs2372 it's probably her accent, but I don't think so, one of the important thing while learning Korean Language is the accent, although it's not very easy for foreigners, it's still significant because at some point intonation is different in every accent as to why it's important is because it might sound very rude for koreans. And the lady seems especially rude especially when she raised her voice and told Erica that she doesn't speak English, can't she say it nicely?

    I think it's time for the Philippines to be tighter as well to get even with the Koreans. Tighter in all facets such as visas for students and others.
    I am not happy watching the story of this poor lady. I didn't grow nor live in the Philippines, however, with the same Filipino blood running in our veins; I am so fucking pissed.
    I taught once in a Korean International School somewhere in Asia and I quit after observing a disgusting reality about the Korean culture. Please don't take this in a wrong context, I just want to share for people to know that those DRAMA SCENES you watched are ironies of the KOREAN REALITY.
    Second, when a Korean staffing company saw my resume in my University school board, they persuaded me to work in the SK. The first question was - are you from South America (basing it on my photo. My display pic here is not mine)? I responded that I'm originally from the Philippines. She further asked if I have an American passport (of course I have). As a person raised, lived, and educated in the US and finishing my Masters in Human Resource, those questions are appalling. Her rude questions engulfed me to espouse a cliche - eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth. That said, I responded in a rude manner - "I won't even waste further my time with your crazy attitude."
    I should've gone further and say, why won't you ask your fellow Koreans to pay their school debts and won't leave for us - tax payers to resolve?
    Basing from all experiences and this show, I reckoned that their culture enables me not to attempt stepping in any parts of Korea. South East Asians should just stop prioritizing their entertainment industry.

    • @kwells1111
      @kwells1111 7 років тому +23

      Well Erica did'nt finish her job, and I think the blond woman really dose'nt understand english thats why she was asking for someone to translate for her (the assistant manager). And with Erica's Korean level she should've been able to say "Wait and I will give you the rest of them" easily. Maybe Erica got nervous and started to speak English instead.

    • @lost1138
      @lost1138 7 років тому +54

    • @sweetlyluv8603

      My supervisor is from a different country and English is my second language, so sometimes we don't understand each other. Sometimes things like these happen when I misplace papers or I try to ask papers from her, but we just end up being confused like they (on the show) we're. I can see why it would be frustrating, but it's not something to yell about. Could be that she was having a bad day and that confusion was just enough for her. Working in an office can be suffocating!!!

    • @kwells1111
      @kwells1111 7 років тому +10

      She did'nt do her job right and her superior's can't understand her, and her superior's know that she can speak enough Korean to make small responses. That must be pretty frustrating so I understood why she raised her voice; I thought she was speaking more loudly so that someone would hear come over and translate. Thats usually how it works in an office job.

    • @unFayemous
      @unFayemous 7 років тому +15

      kwells1111 well, to be fair, it seems most of the people in that office are not Korean (or that's the way they made it sound) so she should really expect that. But I think her tone may be a cultural thing. I'm Swiss and I used to work with a lot of German people and I used to think they were really rude but then I realised that they had no ill-intention and that it was just a cultural thing. So maybe there was no ill-intention to what she was saying and it's just the way she speaks as someone who also has Korean as a second language.

      Erika Han It does make me sad that someone with lots of experience can't get the job because he/she is not a native speaker.
      One of my co-workers is also from the Philippines and she gets paid about $200 less than I do even though she has the certificates and has been teaching for over 5 years while I don't have any certificates nor do I have much experience. I was honestly surprised too.

    I think people should also recognize the fact that even though most filipinos could speak english, the only time they could speak the language usually is in school unless they grew up mixing both filipino (or any other dialect) and english. We only have limited times to actually practice the language. So I could completely understand Erika and her difficulty in forming sentences. & also, i believe that not all filipinos are confident in speaking english and so when someone speaks to them in english, it takes time for them to formulate a perfectly constructed sentence and then they’ll feel anxious to make the person they’re talking to wait for their response and so they just try to blurt their answers quickly. Hehe.

      Paul Korzenko but there are some white Americans there who do not have speak words correctly, display incorrect grammar etc but still get hired as an English teacher. This is true because I have friends in South Korea who teach and know personally. Her race/background is what affected her getting that position.

      I'm actually logged in on youtube under my hubby's account, that is why it's showing "paul korzenko" but I'm Filipina. Anyways, you are right. My husband has a college degree and is very particular with grammar and pronounciation and he's bothered when he hears americans talk with wrong grammar.
      English is not my first language, Filipino/tagalog is my 1st (but I also speak 3 other dialects, almost like different language of its own) sometimes, some of my caucasian friends here in America write me email with wrong grammar, wrong spelling.
      Maybe they get hired because of the accent at least? and if they are teaching elementary kids, all they need is the basic grammar really..

    A fellow Filipina on my favorite show! I'm seriously cheering on for Erica. I'm glad her husband is incredibly sweet and supportive of her. Hopefully one day she will improve both in her Korean and English skills and that she'll get a job that she really wants. Erica, kaya mo yan! Fighting!
    I also really liked how they discussed about racist situations in Korea. Southeast Asia is hugely underrepresented compared to East Asia. We're seen as the "little brown farmer neighbors" of East Asia and I sincerely hope this stereotype goes away at some point in the future. South Korea and Philippines have a good diplomatic relation and many South Koreans visit here for tourist spots, for jobs, education etc. but racism towards us Filipinos in East Asia is still highly evident. What happened in the Korean Embassy when they asked Erica if she's moving to Korea to escape the Philippines... that says a lot about how East Asians view us. Like BIH Philippines ain't all that bad. We're just not as economically advanced as y'all are.
    Don't shun us under an inferior light anymore, please. Peace.

    The narrow minded thing is, being native speaker doesn't make your english better, just because you speak it more doesn't necessarily mean your grammar and utilisation of the language is the most accurate. Most native speakers with bad grammar got jobs as english teachers because they have the accent. Singapore wouldn't be considered as a native english speaking country but on average its citizens speaks much better and proper english than the average Americans.
    Korea needs to learn to be more open minded and break their stereotypes - not my words, but words of koreans I met who works in Australia/ Singapore.

    I don't think her English is that bad she probably hadn't much practice speaking in an foreign country. I was like her after not being able to speak with an english speaker for at least a 1-3 months. I blanked out on certain words and it took me some time to recover. She just lack practice since she's been there for 6 months and that's a decent time to to forget some English especially if she's turning into a trilingual.

      Look, not everyone in this god-forsaken country is as privileged as others to exprience quality education. It's this money based system that hinders everyone from getting equal job opportunities due to the huge gap of inconsistencies between private and public institutions. And even only a small portion of private institutions offer quality education. In addition to that, her degree was for nursing, not journalism, humanities or mass communications which would've challenged her English a lot and improved more if she'd taken those. Taking a nursing degree meant English was last on her list of priorities because linking verbs doesn't help anyone fix a sprained ankle. She took English more like as a "side-line" since she only took short courses with a small group of people.
      It's not that I'm pretending and turning a blind eye on the fact that her English is mediocre(it's intelligible, but she does too much of a mistake in one sentence), but she definitely has room for improvement.

It's not the schools, it's the Korean immigration laws which the schools have to abide by.

      Did we watch the same video? When did South Koreans show an attitude of superiority? Is this coming from your inferiority complex against the people there? Yes, Philippines did send troops to SK, but so did other 22 nations. Moreover, SK have been and still is one of the greatest donors and suppliers of the Philippine’s army. I’m leaving this comment because I’ve been seeing way too much rude and generalizing comments in this thread. Her english is not bad, only when you talk to people who doesn't speak the language, and doesn't care if your grammar is right or wrong. I have nothing against Erica, because I'm also a Filipino. But when you teach, you really have to be very good in english with the right grammar and all. I heard in Korea, or maybe even in other countries, when they hire teachers who can speak english, they usually get those who are authentic. Did you see the other teacher in that school, that's what I mean.

    Seems to me that racism in Korea against darker skinned people is being identified by the open minded few as being closed minded and is something that’s not frowned upon. It also seems to me that most Koreans would always think that when u came from Philippines or any southeast Asian countries they automatically think that you’re poor or you married a Korean man to be well off, and that’s funny considering that Erica here is better educated and her family is more well off than her husband, sad.
