Beautiful collection. I got it the first day it was released. My only critique is the packaging for the discs how they slide into their respective slits; this can scratch them up. Other than that beautiful collection
Same w the Bergman and Fellini box-sets; best thing to do is take the discs out and put them in individual packaging of some sort; jewel-cases, or soft pockets.
@@BirdArvid yeah pay a premium for packaging that you end up not using. It's the Criterion way. I really wish they would learn a thing or two from Arrow, Kino Lorber and Vinegar Syndrome.
@@notmytruthTHEtruthit's weird because they're inconsistent. Their Bruce Lee, and Once Upon a Time in China set, as well as Dekalog and Three Colors don't use slips for discs, yet they decided on slips for Citizen Kane and this. Very strange decision.

@@orangemancometh honestly, why don't Criterion just release a thick Hardcover Photo Coffee Table Book with all the discs in the back a la Godzilla packaging. This is reasonable. This is way more a collectible and a fetish object. I'm sure manufacturing costs are the same or cheaper, even, since its a book. I'd buy 3 of those.

I really wanted and expected much out of this set and four or five out of seven were real lacklusters in terms of special features.
Once I saw the reviews, I held back buying it. I expected more (In the Mood and 2046 are more than okay though).
All in all, maybe I expected too much and this be a lesson for me.
I just expected the films, and am very happy. WKW's logic behind the work he's done on them is sound. And, they look amazing. ESPECIALLY In the Mood For Love. It's looks better & more stunning than it ever has! The faux-purists seem, fr the most part,to be lazy know-it-alls who think they know better than the people who made the films.
@@simonjohnston9488 With the hype, I expected more behind the scenes work, more special features to delve into.
I'm sure the films are excellent, but in recent years, I grew very attached to the bonus section as a way to learn techniques and challenges of producing films.
I plan to get "In the Mood for Love" as an individual release though as it holds also a healthy dose of bonuses.

@@jon4715yeah I saw these films for the first time the way they are in this set and I honestly prefer how Fallen Angels used to be. I think Mood for Love and Chungking look great though.
But my thing is, once something is out in the world, and people get used to it and love it, regardless if it's not how you intended, I think it's too late. He should have left it as is. I don't mind color grade changes but some of the decisions in Fallen Angels I fail to see the thematic purpose for. Maybe it's to create a greater effect of claustrophobia idk, but you also lose too much of the original image for my taste. The movie was already claustrophobic.
@@ColombianThunder Wong says he and Chris wanted to shoot Angels with anamorphic lenses, however they didn’t, and cropping it to that aspect ratio damages the original compositions.
I disagree about the new color timing. It’s a creative decision, and those changes are alterations to historically important works of art that should be preserved.
Release updated director’s cuts or something. But altering the color, framing, and titles of these works can never be justified if it means removing the originals from the market and pretending they never existed in this form.

Years ago I pulled out my old, original 1970s Star Wars toys for my kids to see. One of them grabbed the Land Speeder… in the original box… and proceeded to tear the box open - as one does.

Astounded none of the comments point out that the films have had huge, heavy handed changes to the grading and aspect ratio that some feel betrays their memory of the original releases.
We've just moved on. That topic has been beaten into the ground already.
also, saying this in case you don't know, but these changes were made by Wong Kar-Wai himself! So, in a way, it is supposed to make them closer to his vision. However, I do agree that some of these films seem much less beautiful and that kind of sucks
I managed to get an old sealed copy of Chungking Express for cheap and a British Blu-ray release of Fallen Angels. In The Mood for Love I already had. The only one I'm missing is Days of Being Wild. Might get an HK import of that one. Those are the only WKW films I've seen, and I needed them on copies like how I remembered them. Still getting the box though.
Only one film has significant changes, and for good reason. And it now looks better than it ever has. This whinge is so ridiculous, and comically overblown. A tiny few are uptight about it. The rest of us trust the director, and/or have read the description of the changes, and WKW's explanation. Which is entirely reasonable. Astounded? Seriously?

With this packaging we can have scratched discs so we don't see the revisionism--I mean film preservation.

Your attempt at purism has broken on through to the other side. You didn't bother to read anything about what happened to a number of the films when they were first released, huh. Let alone WKW discussing the films.
@@simonjohnston9488 yeah you're right the color grading and wiping of the film grain for the Lord of the Rings 4k is exactly what Peter Jackson intended in 2001 and George Lucas originally wanted the Special Edition changes from 1995 to be in the 1977 original theatrical but he didn't because idk😑 You don't need to shill for Wong Kar Wai when he won't even allow the original visions for hia films to be available. It's an asshole move and you're defending it.

@@orangemancometh It's not cynical. WKW really does hold the rights to these films, and he is holding the originals hostage. A fire is preventing us from getting a few lines in Happy Together? Only by choice with the relatively well-preserved digital elements available.

@@ben11058 Wong Kar-wai’s new restorations here are insanely revisionist, with tons of changes. Specifically, new color grades that look totally off, and in the case of Fallen Angels, the aspect ratio has been altered and cropped to scope format.
@derekbd Fallen Angels looks worse. Random changes, black and white scenes that weren't meant to have been. It's been cropped and stretched to fit the new aspect ratio.

Except for Tears and Days, he altered them all in some way; worst victim being Fallen Angels. Shame.

@@firetube2ndchannel Tears actually got the same green filter. ITMFL got the green filter. Chungking got it's look completely changed. Happy lost dialogue. Fallen had aspect ratio changed, cropped, stretched, final scene was made black and white, i don't know what else. Just tinkering for the sake of tinkering. We should have gotten multiple versions of Fallen Angels. The rest have no business being altered. A lot of them got new titles I guess, including Chungking...which WKW explained as being indicative of these different versions, which I respect, that way we always know what's what...but why not also give us original versions. This was an incredible opportunity to get both Ashes and Redux...don't know what the deal was with the rights. I didn't realize, a full length version of The Hand is included, which is a great reason to own this. 2046 also looks like it might make the whole thing worthwhile.

Nope. They're 4K restorations, but 1080p Blu-rays. The Korean boutique label NovaMedia is releasing it in 4K UHD, and supposedly with the new and old cuts.

Superb box set a great way to promote
Wonderful presentation on the video but it most definitely did not answer my one question. What am I supposed to do with all the folded pages? Am I supposed to cut them open? Pull them off the book? I see the pictures on the insides but I don't want to destroy my booklet to see them and I can't exactly dish another $140 for another, disposable, copy. That'd be wasteful and bit of a sacrilege. It's like putting a puzzle together. I don't know if it's supposed to be like that or if I'm supposed to unfold them in some manner I'm not seeing and I'm too worried about ripping this very expensive book to find out.

@@deqdvotion you don't. I called criterion and they told me there is nothing essential in the in betweens. It a style for books. You don't rip it.

Anyone else having issues with Fallen Angels? After the hour Mark, the movie is pretty much unplayable. Haven't seen any others from the set but I hope they aren't as broken

The same thing happen with my Chungking express it stop at the 1 hour and ten minute mark but if I skipped that it worked just fine.

The Deluxe Edition of this boxset offers perforations in the cardboard, on the left side of the 2046 disc. This way you can detach it easily and throw it straight in the trash.

I hope Days and 2046 get individual releases. The rest of the set is disappointing. I don't think the old Criterion would have ever done this.
@Jeffrey Scott Criterion worked with WKW to bring revised versions of these historically important films to market without also including the originals. I should amend, the inclusion of the extended version of The Hand is an awesome bonus.
