I feel like this needs mentioning anytime someone talks about it but: TEFLON TAPE IS NOT A SEALANT.
it is a dry lubricant, and it prevents the two metal surfaces from corroding to each other. So they system can be easily taken apart and serviced. Thats it. Which is why Justin correctly pointed put that you only need about 1 and 1/2 wraps around your threads.
If your whatever system has an air/water/whatever leak MORE TEFLON TAPE WILL NOT FIX THIS.

I made almost this exact setup 2 years ago just to get a job done on a set of exhaust headers using a bunch of parts from my spares box and I still use it today. the only thing I have different is I put a ball valve about 2 feet from the end of the pipe so I can turn it on and off at the welding bench in an effort to save gas.

Great video, also if you are close to an industrial park, look for a fitting supply shop and you can cut the cost in half.

Definitely worth rummaging the scrap bin as well.
My work constantly throws out most of the parts in this list, and I might have just stashed ~50 pounds of random brass fittings that were "scrap" just by virtue of being "used", and no longer able to be sold in new equipment.
Perfectly usable for just about anything, and a bit of cleaning helps if you're feeling cautious.

Twin Flow regs are relatively cheap....but that foil trick is a winner.all the time I spent making wood bungs etc for different jobs... simple little trick right there

I chose a "Y" fitting BEFORE the original flow meter or use the video's "run tee". Attached the original flow meter to one branch of the "Y" fitting, and added a second flow meter to the other branch. Thus I can ACCURATELY determine the back side flow. I purchased ONE "Y" fitting and reused ONE flow meter. ONLY 2 PARTS.
Did you remove the original flow meter and install the Y where it used to be?

Good to see you're still around, Justin, last few months content has been a lit light - I trust it's simply because you're busy 😎, and not some other issue.
Cool suggestion for those a little hard up, or who may have broken/misplaced a second regulator and, if you have two regulators already, you could apply the same flow logic to run two purge lines to larger, more awkward or hard to seal workpieces.
About the only thing I might suggest is that ordinary PVC plastic lines may be more susceptible to burn or cut damage from nearly cutting/grinding/welding or sharp debris and edges, respectively.
You would have to add in the cost of fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle as well as your time to go to Home Depot and back. Your time alone probably offsets the added cost of Amazon. You did a great job with the video. Thanks for making it. TP
Cool idea which does the same as a valved Y adapter or a fixed Y-adapter with an added valve on the purge hose side. Thanks for posting!
I don't even want a quality dual flowmeter (which I'd promptly turn into two singles) since a CGA-580 tee is cheap and lets me use two flowmeters, replace one if damaged, run only one rather than having downtime fixing a flowmeter, or grab the gauged regulator off my MIG to purge with.
BTW used flowmeters are VERY easy to repair when a kit's available. When external damage is not visible seat failure causes the vast majority of the problems. I bought a large heap of Victor cores at auction (the big dogs don't buy cores, they're at auctions for the heavier equipment so hobby and small users can score nicely) which is an easy way to get a lifetime supply.
You can use any welding gas regulator with argon safely since the whole point of argon is it's inert. My welding instructor (highly skilled pipeline welder) had me mod an oxygen regulator (same outlet fitting) with a CGA-580 nut and nipple for the big purge jobs but a spare O2 regulator could be left as a dedicated purge regulator.
With a little study (a lot is even better) you can wallow in welding equipment and have many reserve gas cylinders for small money. I'm a cheap bastid so I'm efficient. I buy used cylinders (know what to inspect) off Fecesbook Marketplace, Craigslist, auctions and estate sales for less than they cost to fill. I use up the gas, exchange the cylinder and always have a spare or four. I made the mistake of leasing, once! Owning is better for low use rate individuals and some businesses.

Omnipro 220 from harbor freight. Has a kv150 regulator. So the flow control is built in. I suppose that doesn't matter too much. As far as I can tell it seems to have a 1/4 npt male to 5/8 18 (Rh) female adapter that the hose goes into. Well the 1/4 side seems to be epoxied in or something. Trying to look for 5/8 fittings seems to be even more expensive.

Thanks for the video, I was thinking I'd need a second flow meter. But as you say, flow of the back purge is static so you can assume it is fixed at the value shown when the welder is not on, separately adjustable with the ball valve.
Before i had my dual flowmeter regulator i used to do it like this.

I've been teaching people how to install teflon tape, just exactly the way you do it, for years. So frustrating to watch them with the roll upside down or covering the end of the fitting, or worst yet rolling it the wrong direction. Kudo's to you Jason!

Alternatively, you could order parts of McMaster, pay about the same amount of money, and get them from proper industrial manufacturers with a known country of origin (usually American!). Looking up their part numbers...

Plus a couple bucks for shipping. Weird thing with McMaster is you don't see the shipping charges until it ships ("costs what it costs"), but it's never been anything crazy in my experience. And these guys were doing two-day shipping way before Amazon ever did. I remember one time back college (around 2010), where I placed an order early one day (6am or so), and it arrived that evening. Beautiful!

I got my ball valve at Harbor Freight, 1/4" ID 15' hose at HD and a flow meter off EBAY. Could have saved a few bucks had i viewed this video first
Saved money is earned money. I've used EVA foam to make reusable plugs, too. Controls leakage better to save gas...if you're REALLY pinching the pennies.

But even if you did find few bits cheaper in home depot still cheaper on amazon as you likely drive to home depot that's gas there and back and if you work full time it's costing you labour to go get it, so amazon wins by far can order in 15 mins and still work on other stuff till arrives the next day

Too much. go to home depot garden section. there's an area of plant sprayers and they come in the correct smaller ID size you're using but in plastic. These are UV plastic so very durable inside use. they also stock rubber hose and pvc hose there too. Everything there is under $10

Is it OK to purge with a cheaper gas like nitrogen?
I’m thinking that N obviously won’t work as an arc shield gas, as the arc will split that N-N bond and make N crazy reactive.
But as purge gas, I’m not sure if the hot steel on the back side is enough to split that N-N bond, so I’m guessing N might be ok as a purge gas, but not 100% sure
Purging has to be a noble gas, because as you know noble gases dont like to react! No reaction from gas = no contamination Edit: (specifically with Tig Welding)
