"the devils eye" ---> excellent explained . I just started tig welding on thin pipe and your explanation about the devils eye helped me a lot since I had problems with the thin pipe . I tried it today and it worked excellent . thank you very very much for your video and help !! grtz from holland .
About 34 years ago I worked for a company building milk tankers for AMPI. There's nothing quite like a USDA inspection. Every weld inside those tanks had to be finished completely smooth, where you couldn't even tell there was even a weld there. We used flapper wheels on the end of a drill to sand the inside welds down to tank level and then we'd polish them. The manhole in the top and the ports on the back had to be welded the same way. We also ran beads on every joint and seam on the outside too but we just used a MIG for those because they didn't have to be sanitary. It took about two weeks to finish one working with two men crews if I remember correctly and that includes insulation, skin. running gear and fifth wheel mounted and ready to roll down the road. I'm a rig welder too and I only took that job when the oil field collapsed in 1986 and it held me over until I could put my rig back to work.
Food grade welding is so clean it is satisfying with the end result. I've seen 10's of thousands of feet of stainless food grade pipe work and the couple of dairy plants I used to work at. So clean.
My old man and grandpa both hauled milk for AMPI back in the 70’s-80’s

Super helpful as an engineer designing some of these sanitary tube applications to see what the weld process should look like and things to look out for to make the design easier to weld and a better end product. The video is a great resource when you can't go bug your welders in the shop for a demo!
Damn. This guy is a def a PRO. wheres he been?? Such a natural on camera and dished out some great details. Really enjoyed this one guys!
You rock Derrick! Thanks for watching brother
Probably will never do this kind of work but love the fact that there is a video showcasing it. Thank you
This dude really went into details with everything! Great work!!
Appreciate it!
One of the best instructors here in Dallas !
@@irvingarcia215 my man! 🙌🏻💯
He really went into detail and for me he was easy to understand nothing negative against anyone else they all do great i might have a more difficult time understanding people when learning but he was definitely a very good teacher thanks guys
I’m the same way man idk if I’m a dumbass sometimes or people just suck at explaining things, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and just consider myself an idiot but then there’s dudes like him who make it clear as day for me on the first shot.
Wow great video, I’ve never seen a half way decent sanitary tube video for how it’s actually done in plants. UA-cam needed this guy 👌
Wow thank you!!!
Excellent demonstration! Working for an FDA facility producing soaps, lotions, and hand sanitizers, I weld sanitary all. the. time.
This was very informative and answered a couple of lingering questions I've had about how to perfect my craft.
Hey man I’m a certified welder for pharmaceutical tubing and I run piping where even dust in the tube I’m unacceptable. If you want any tips on sanitary piping I’m sure I can give you a little bit of everything that you’d want to know.
@@richardmaschack2150 I’m a beginner welder but considering it as a career. I assume that this type of welding is pretty hard versus other tig pipe because of the lack of room for contamination?
I am currently a mechanic at Tropicana and sanitary welding is the only thing holding me back from getting my full pay, and you made this so much more simpler to understand and the one thing killing me was learning these tips.
So stoked this was covered I live a Dairy Town and this is right up the alley of what I wanted to see thanks hopefully we see more of the Sanitary welding thanks 🙏
Welded alot of thin wall 316l tubing using this method. Alot of in-position free hand, but since you’re not using filler its easier to prop. Such a smooth and pleasant process when you get the hang of it. Great vid Matt, would love to see more of you on the channel!
How do you tack it?
Thank you thank you!! That guy was straight forward and to the point 👍🏽
Something I do everyday! Glad to see you all showing people what's up with it. There is more to it than what some people think and like any form of welding can be refined into an artform.

Though it should look like this when you get done with it
A coworker just sent me this excellent video. I thought this could only be done at an acceptable level with orbital equipment. Edges still need to be faced however. Great technique Matt! Thanks for sharing. We put this into practice immediately with similar results. :)
Awesome Video, with a lot of info. Thanks WeldTube Fam & Matt
Best weld channel on UA-cam hands down !
Easily one of your better guests you all have had on. Well done gents
Thanks for the Demo ! Great to share This IS a subject that is not a lot of info Keep it up Great job
Bless Another excellent video with a welder from Big D. Very informative. Thanks 🙏
Thanks John! 👊🏻🍻
That is an outstanding welding tutorial..... 5 Stars for this one!!!!
Thank you!
Super Explanation, I feel like I understood everything and could apply the principles now if I were ever in that field.
That was great, thanks for presenting!
Great video...thank you for the refresh!!
Finally a good video on sanitary pipe, make more please!!!!!
Thanks for the show and tell!!!!!!!
Very educational video & top of the line tecnics for small bore tube
One of the best vids I've watched!!! Thank you
This is a great video. Matt is very informative
I use a #4 on a stubby gas lens with a 1/16" tungsten stick out. I also run 42 amps on 2". 5 cfh on purge and 25 cfh on a ck swivel head rig. Important to note that your purge can be ruined if the pipe is colder than the ambient air temp. Condensation will accumulate on the pipe i.d.
Mag it at .6 and amp at 55 and wiggle. Not too wide and no color on inside. Done some EP stainless. Wiggle wiggle
You just pointed out something i never thought about.... condensation inside the pipe. Could explain alot of defaults i had in some of my full pen welds. Thnx for that, i will consider this next time.
Thanks for the tips. Ive been doing a lot of sanitary pipe weld since i moved jobs. So i need to catch up a lot
I might never do any of this BUT, I'm a learn it all kinda welder, keeps ya busy.
Cool vid, thanks
Well done Matt 👍 That answered a couple of my questions. Good tutorial. Also, I tried that weldbeast fixed 11 lens and was impressed. Keep it up👊💙
Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Thank you very much for this video!!!!!
at 19 i started as an apprentice in pharma and food industry working with pretty much only Sanitary Tubing, that being said this video was everything I had been taught so it was awesome watching and knowing i practice what youre preaching thanks for the video guys! Fuck Yeah WeldTube lets go!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hoping to hit a food grade gig as soon as I'm out of school so I'm glad this is here
Great info, thanks!
beautiful work!!
Belo trabalho 🇧🇷
Awesome work. Thanks. That is some pro welding dude !! and well explained too.
Excellent demo & explanation. Really liked this lads delivery style. I’ve tried this stuff & struggle. Approaching 60 now & just not supple enough anymore to go top to bottom in one smooth motion. Thanks for the great video though
The welders are top notch on this channel.
My dude matt! Nice. This is how they did all the hivac stuff when I was working up at Texas instruments. Crazy to see you on here lol.
Thanks for the love James!
Great video!!
great video very well put together fine young man there still hope for the future of this country
Wow that means a lot! Thanks Fred!
Great show guys ...keep these coming ..
One important thing you didn’t talk about was the size of the purge hole in your heat tape.
One thing you can do to check that is to lick your knuckle and put it infront of the hole, if it feels cold then its enough purge flow.
Good tips man. did that kind of work for 4 years .
Nice weld good job and explaining it all i work in sanitary field we also did a lot of orbital welding on stainless tubing
Amazing!
Thanks Matt
Excellent video sir! You under sold it!!! Excellent content, great tips and tricks just like you share in the classroom always looking forward ways to help us newbies! Thanks again for sharing & seriously anyone wanting to learn a serious trade, Matt’s the professor you want @dallascollege @mvc campus!
Last company I worked for, we did a lot of this type of autogenous welding on tubing known as 8LMP. Same type of material and process, and just like this man in the video explained not much room for error.
Impressive
Totally awesome
Thank brother 👍 awesome
You are awesome thanks for the info
Thank you for nice video.
This helped me!
I love these videos. I'd like to get some jobs doing sanitary welding with my powertig.
Superb!!
Nice vid. The only sort of thing missing for me was where to purge from and to. I was under the impression run the purge from low spot out of a higher spot. Argon is heavier than oxygen.
Would love a run through on how to do long lengths of continuous pipe.
Hey dude sanitary means no need filler wire or any metal to supply just melt it two sides or both sides always take a look on devils eye thats the word i learned from you bro, good info keep it up,im also a welder gtaw/smaw combi and gtaw/fcaw combi pipe welder, never been welding that kind of pipe sanitary welding,i want to experience that also that was interesting.
Cool thanks.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico, los soldadores de aqui queremos un video similar pero en español, gracias soy fiel seguidor..
I wanna see this dude make a part 2
I’m down to clown! Sounds like a plan brother
He just welded part 1 and 2 together..
Nice
Nice work man! You just got an IG follower.
Thanks Cory! 👊🏻💯
Nitido soldadura sanitaria I'm a welder too from N.Y long island I work do some of that thank you for the video.
@weldtube it was badass waking up to see something I asked for get uploaded couldn’t have asked for a better instructor thanks y’all!
maybe you can already do it but if not you are still young enough to master going all the way around without breaking the arc. 6g, start at 4 o'clock down to 6 then uo to 10 o'clock switch hands no break in arc past 12 switch back to right hand around 2 o'clock then continue back down to 4:30, Helmans Mayo-Best Foods, and corporate Budwieser, have sample boards with my welds. i am now 67 long retired just want to pass something on, you are great!
Matt, Thanks for getting back. The HH 300 is a bit heavy and I slip on the smooth stainless. I have seen where some guys grind a groove or slot in their gas cup. Is this helpful. Thanks again for a very professional presentation . Tim
I worked for a Texas company called Dynsmic Industries doing pharmaceutical piping in ma.
I have a dynasty 210. Fuckin love it
Top notch aloy metals welder 💪
Thanks brother! 🙏🏻
That lincoln 305g is a beast, i own one myself and have done alot of structural welding jobs, havent done any piping work with it but it does tig weld like a boss
Always great vids but idk if anyone else caught it just found it funny that on the 305 he has miller killer but yet running a miller dynasty haha 😄
Perfekt👌👌👌
Would of loved if he showed his prep and tacks!
Muy bueno 👌👌👌,cual es el mejor tungsteno para inoxidable?
Sanitary welds....cool story bro
Great video, when I learned ,what you call the devil's eye I was told it's the man in the boat..
Thanks man learn something new
One question that I forget what the guy i worked with told me is @how long to purge for length and od of pipe. Im sure their is a formula but do you have a rule of thumb, and also does hole size matter for purge out? Excellent info thanks
New subscriber from guatemala.👍🕳️
Thanks for this great video. I do have a question about lift start. I was taught that any tungsten touching the metal would cause inclusions, is this not the case with high end machines?
Hi Scott, using lift arc won’t cause inclusions, but dipping your tungsten while welding will, it’s two different animals. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for another great video!
But do you not have to pacify the stainless steel after?
Not the welders job bud haha, just burn em in and on to the next one. They are usually flushed with caustic before production
I'm interested to know why your purged from the top of the spool and not the bottom ? I was always taught to treat the argon like water filling a bucket , inlet at the lowest point and vent at the highest to help evacuate all the atmosphere more smoothly.
Good video thanks for the content.
Best regards
Canada
i have been doing this fo 54 years and i agree with you. and yea i know i'm old. nothing i can do about it.
Hey dude...nice video. Could you pls explain how the weld integrity is established for these pipes? Hydrostatic pressure testing? If so is it done to B31.3 code or a different code?
This is brilliant👍😎😎
I'm just would to know Tig torch size, gas lens and cup 😁
And geave more that clips showing HF fan how to weld with Tig lift 😁😁
Nice clean faced ends so you can get cool tacks without burn thru.. also welding right and left handed will make your life easier
In New Zealand we always use filler wire while welding we tack without wire, we always pass weld test doing it this way
Damn I would love to do this kind of work any here in az lol
Master Welder
That kind of weld can pass a test in the US ?? 😳 Danm it must be easy being a welder over there 😮
i used a pulsed tig esab machine hand held or orbital long time ago now though
Good shit man! Tone@sanchez Weld Solutions fresnoca
Given the circumstnces, what CFH do you recommend for your torch in combination with the purge?
Hi Mia, normal CFH on the torch (20-30).
I weld same pipes in Norway from time to time but inspector say i must use 1 mm filler becouse of the steamer preshure when they clean the pipes.
How do you get rid of the fish eye on your stops? With the pedal you can ease off and it’s not a problem but it’s a problem for me on the lift arc.
Que tal amigos me gustan mucho sus videos, pero me gustaría que los traducirán al español.
Gracias x los consejos
