  • The Indian Navy’s INS Brahmaputra warship, docked at the Mumbai Dockyard for refitting, was overturned earlier this week under mysterious circumstances. What started with a fire on Sunday has led to significant damage and the disappearance of a sailor. With a Rear Admiral now probing the incident, what are the implications for the ship's future usability and the broader safety and maintenance of Indian naval vessels?
Salvaging the Brahmaputra is a challenging and costly endeavour. But such incidents aren't entirely new to the Indian Navy. Host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor outline a history of significant accidents in the past two decades, especially between 2013 and 2014, when a series of mishaps led to the resignation of then-Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi.
What challenges does the Navy face in maintaining assets in congested dockyard environments like Mumbai?
The duo also discuss other naval mishaps involving the INS Chakra and INS Arihant, highlighting the difficulties of maintaining and operating complex naval machinery, especially nuclear submarines.
Tune in as we review the Navy's safety record and the warship's future!

I am a retired Master merchant mariner, and do know something about ships. I have served on board MT Koyali, the largest indian tanker during her time..2,77,000 MT..isn't this puny in comparison..and there were hardly any accidents..this is sheer negligence..! Period..!
But some small fry will be made accountable, and the incident will be forgotten, till it happens again somewhere else..

I know nothing about ships. But I know they have massive piping and cabling in confined spaces and I shudder at the fire hazard. And if welding or gas cutting goes on during repair it is ten times worse. There would definitely be SOPs for repair.I presume. They either weren't followed or weren't sufficient.

You were also not present at the place and have zero idea as to the situation and circumstances that led to whatever led to the events. So “Master Mariner”, Capt, maybe calm down?

Admiral DK Joshi was absolutely pushed out by UPA. Fortunately the current Gvt brought him back as Lt Gv of Andaman & Nicobar.

A reply to the guy who thinks that INS Brahmaputra is Puny in front of The merchant vessel, but only in terms of size. The case is different when you dive within the technical aspect. Brahmaputra is a Military warship and has a ton of other things to do except transporting some oil. The Radar, the weapons, the storage of the weapons, the internal electronic systems of radars, the helicopter bays, the storage of weapons (RBU6000 rockets and ammunition of 155 MM Automatic gun and torpedo tubes), the pressurized valves for the torpedo tubes and much more. These HAVE to be accounted within a "puny" space to keep the ships RCS as small as possible. There is no comparison between interiors of a Crude oil transportation ship and a Naval warship. The merchant ships have large wide corridors and big cabins in them but this is not the case for frigates or any other class of naval vessel. Maximum of 5-6 feet of width is seen at various conpartments of these ships. I respect the experience that someone has got in any field but at the same time they shouldn't make any comments that misguide the public. Dhanyavad 🙏

If you were a pair of honest journalists you would admit that Indian armed forces are anything but formidable. The Tejas debacle i.e. the Turd that no one wants to buy and now this!
It would be more prudent to learn how to cook and sell Dim Sum at the border now to prepare for the upcoming invasion, rather than invest in Indian arms!

I’m sorry you are wrong when you say it’s begging to catch fire. It not a big deal? India today is perhaps part of culture which is chalta hai. Fire is not something which should happen if protocol and safety culture is right. Incorrect to say it happens

It is alarming that multiple accidents are happening with Indian Navy & specially in and near Mumbai naval dockyard area! Sindhurakshak submarine, Betwa, now INS Brahmaputra. INS Chakra, the only leased nuclear attack submarine had also met with bad collision with ground while entering at dock and damaged its front, as a result had to returned Russia before time. enen it is also hard that sea water entered in INS Arihant, then the only SSBN of India through open hatch( news from social media, not confirming it's true nature). Fire at INS Vikramaditya.
For god's shake we have to be very careful. There is no peacetime. Remember what former CDS Late Gen. Bipin Rawat cautioned us.

Its utter incompetence. Ship don’t trip to its side. That’s basically means you are incompetent. And I’m sorry fire is uncommon. It probably an ill trained worker smoking in a fuel tank. Unbelievable how can they be lousy with a ship and that too military ship. It’s no surprise, considering safety culture we have in countries. We don’t even understand what fire safety is
