Come on Harley. Another cheap plastic part to worry about, but thank you John for the tip. I just installed a Barnett Scorpion clutch with heavy springs so I’m gonna have to do this clutch cable mod. Also the tip about having 1/8” free play in the cable at the caliper is important. If you find you can’t start you engine while in gear then clutch cable may be too tight.
Replaced my cable adjuster, with the fat bagger adjuster with approximately 2000 miles, on my 21 SG. Wasn't the plastic that broke on mine, but the pot metal threads. While adjusting the cable routing after handle bar install. Highly recommend the fat bagger adjuster 17,000 and holding up well. Gives back the old school way of adjusting clutch.
Great video!! I’ve actually been riding with a buddy when his broke. Another part that will get you stranded is that stock shift linkage you have on Mad Max. A cheap failsafe is to upgrade to the heim joint style. Multiple companies including Santoro Fabworks, Thrashin, Green Brothers, even Harley makes them. Ride safe! Keep them awesome videos rollin!
I noticed this on my CVO and RK. It does seem very weak and easy to break. You'd think when you spend over 40k for the new CVO, they would upgrade this simple part. I'll be replacing it on both bikes this winter. It was also almost 60 out here in Ohio!
Thanks for doing the video. Information that needs to be out. I almost shut it off because I was waiting for the point for so long that I got discouraged.
Consider how many Harley’s have sold with that cable adjustment device. If it were such a radical problem, including a safety issue, Harley would know, and so would NHTSA. At the very least there would be one new UA-cam video a day from different influencers telling us the danger. Someone needs to do research and find out what happens more…flat tires or clutch adjust mechanism breaking. Or maybe any other part failing compared to clutch adjustment mechanism failing. This remind me of a video like yours only the product was a metal intake manifold to replace the “plastic” on on the M8. Maker claimed OEM intake manifold could warp an or start to melt. But, there was, and is No proof of this happening. So, replace what makes ya’ll feel good.
Appreciate the heads up on this. I have a 22 so I'll have to keep this in mind. Is that the 11" Sport Flare you're running from KW? It looks so natural on your RG.
I also have the Rekluse clutch in my 22 SG, the clutch lever is for sure harder to pull now. I need the centrifugal clutch for my situation, seems running then at low RPM causes excess friction.
Great advice and well-done video. Just curious, I noticed that you have the stock shift linkage still on the bike. It's been my experience that that component fails more frequently than this part. Interested in your opinion. Again great videos brother I love watching your channel!
I just said the same thing 😂 it’s such a buzzkill when you reach for your shifter and it’s just hanging there. Then you just hope you have zip ties lol.
Thanks for the video. This is extremely good to know for those that have the cable system on the new baggers. I know the older clutch cable systems did not have the plastic in them.
That Mueller clutch mechanism works also , side by side comparison youll see the lever that the clutch hooks into is longer for nore torque like a longer wrench would work in theory but there's a company that makes a clutch lever called easy pull levers . Nice levers with bearings inside, check em out & thx for the truth on the M8 clutch system after the engine/clutch mods are installed , I heard different that the clutch on M8 doesn't get that much harder to pull then factory .
Took a bit for you to get there but..... good info buddy. I was in my cable the other day and did notice how cheap it felt. I'll replace mine. Not sure how my bike would like being bang shifted to get home, If you even can.
Upgraded the compensator and basket in my lowrider S and went to adjust my clutch cable and came across that red and yellow piece of junk. First M8 I’ve owned and was not aware Harley went to such a shitty setup. Luckily I immediately found the fat baggers fix for this. This guy is correct though, that thing will leave you stranded if it breaks.
Plastic components are the bane of mechanics and reliability, no matter what vehicle type, things have gone considerably downhill this century due to this material.
Had a front tire flat no problem broke out pump plug kit set to go i thought rubber on valve stem tore and it wouldnt pump up going to try super glue next time
Can you tell me what kind of brake pedal and foot rest you have? I have a 2010 Electra Glide, I am 5'7" short legs. I want to bring my brake pedal back .to reduce my leg reach.
Man, I'll keep the 1993, 1997, & 2012. Y'all can keep the plastic & computer machines that HD is putting out, now. The CEO oversees sneakers & the one before him oversaw microwave ovens.🙄
Clutch adjuster? Yup. When I replaced my bars, I got an upper cable from Magnum Shielding and it comes with a steel adjuster on the bottom end of the cable. The factory design is fucking stupid lol... It takes literally 2 minutes to adjust the clutch with the threaded steel type adjusters, and about 30 seconds less with the plastic "quick" adjuster. Most of the time is spent getting the cable out of the plastic clip and the sheath out of the way.
@@CYCLEFANATIXCan't wait to see where you bring the new build. especially the handlebars.......(but i still miss madmax-very different in a sea of roadglides) LOL
I don't think this will work on my indian 😂 snapped my clutch cable at 15k but I was my fault replaced handle bars with mid rise and changed levers to psr shortys. Bought a Barnett Cable and done 2 inch longer then stock
It took you 6 minutes to get to the point of this video.
he likes to talk lol
I can’t get those minutes back
Yeah cause you would follow his channel if he just put on some 30 second videos.
@@aaronfowler5477 I'm not following his channel. It came up as a sugestion in my browser.
He likes to hear himself talk, a lot, it’s in all his videos
Good looking out John! I don't know why Harley Davidson put cheap components on an expensive bike!😠
Just another reason to not buy another Harley, charge more for less
Just to save a few cents on each bike, that's Harley selling a 30 thousand dollar bike with alot of parts you have to upgrade right from the start
Come on Harley. Another cheap plastic part to worry about, but thank you John for the tip. I just installed a Barnett Scorpion clutch with heavy springs so I’m gonna have to do this clutch cable mod. That's nothing, If you want to find cheap parts on a modern vehicle look at Ford or Chevrolet these days !
What’s more reliable and lasts longer…a cable clutch or hydraulic ? I had a hydraulic clutch in my ‘19 RGS and loved it, never had any issues.
Replaced my cable adjuster, with the fat bagger adjuster with approximately 2000 miles, on my 21 SG. Wasn't the plastic that broke on mine, but the pot metal threads. Thanks for the input

Not only increased reliability, but better feeling shifts with the new linkage.

I decline to comment on issues in this video.
Other than to say. All vehicles can break and leave you stranded.
Thanks for doing the video. Information that needs to be out. I almost shut it off because I was waiting for the point for so long that I got discouraged.
Good info John! Didnt realize what a crappy connector was in there. I ordered 1 from get lowered today. Good heads up bud. ✌️
Plastic parts on a $30,000 motorcycle .........🤣
One of the first things i changed… mine broke after 50 miles. My quess was the stock shift linkage

I’ll stick with the hydraulic clutch smother softer quicker engagement. An I don’t have to worry about a cable breaking. Just my opinion.
Appreciate the heads up on this. I have a 22 so I'll have to keep this in mind. Is that the 11" Sport Flare you're running from KW? It looks so natural on your RG.
I was told about that at the 120th anniversary meet up in Milwaukee. Forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder. I Still need to do that
The fat baggers clutch cable adjustment. Also, important a billet shift linkage. Been there. Thank you
Had mine break on my 21 Roadking Special, and the FBI ez adjuster was a life saver.
That plastic POS failed on me 3-4 times before I finally bought a metal one. But yeah, 200$ later for the tow and the part. Thanks HD.
This very thing happened to me- stock cable and my Rekluse clutch burned up. Replaced with custom cable with the improved connector
I also have the Rekluse clutch in my 22 SG, the clutch lever is for sure harder to pull now. I need the centrifugal clutch for my situation, seems running then at low RPM causes excess friction.

The clutch cable broke on me with 13 miles on my 22 sgs when I got it from dealer.
Hey John thanks for info. I just ordered that part
Thanks for the video. This is extremely good to know for those that have the cable system on the new baggers. I know the older clutch cable systems did not have the plastic in them.
the muller easy pull is legit. huge difference
Appreciate all the good videos John , but 4 minutes of talking before you show what the part is that strands you??? Can you get it down to 2 minutes
Always great information coming from you John! Grateful for you and the channel!
What brand is your seat. That looks awesome
Saddlemen
Hey man where did you get the black front rotor from? Looks awesome
clutch handle free-play is 3/16" ,( 5 mm ), as a rule of thumb.
I replaced mine after i installed the 4 inch extender from fat baggers when i installed my bars. Couldn't believe how cheap the harley one was.

You break your belt. You're screwed. I have. You have to separate from the swingarm.
Hate the fact that they went back to cable. Making it hard to trade my 19 for a new model.
Seems like a lot play up to 1/4”
But I’m running 09 FXSTC
Ajustment spec 1/8/-1/16”
Keep it at 1/16” for me
Keep shiny side up
Yeah, you’re probably right looking at it, I’m going to tighten it up a tad bit
You’ve repeated yourself like 5 times
Thanks John great vid on these much needed parts!
Great video again. 2021 went back to a cable clutch, not 2022. Probably mentioned below
How did you mount your go pro Volta to your bike?
Ulanzi
I have a 2021 road glide it has a cable clutch
Nice video. Does your suspension reservoir setup support tour pack use? If so, can you share what setup your using?
NICE, GREAT VIDEO. THANKS FOR KEEPING US IN THE WIND

What are the lower lights you have on your crash bars. What brand and where sis you get them. Tks PA
Custom dynamics fog lamps 👍
Glad I have a hydraulic clutch because I can’t watch a video that takes forever getting to the point… Sorry…

Shift linkage
What happened to the single cable going from the lever to the transmission????????
Cool, just ordered it
Thanks for your share a nice things.....Keep it up
Plastic adjuster for clutch
Thankfully my 97 doesn't have that plastic junk, just a plain cable. Thanks for the video anyway
Extremely helpful… thank you!!!
2021 started cable clutch
Thank you Sir!
Can you tell me what kind of brake pedal and foot rest you have? I have a 2010 Electra Glide, I am 5'7" short legs. I want to bring my brake pedal back .to reduce my leg reach.
2021 is when they went back to cable clutch.
how ironic, i was just looking at these. they are $49.95
Plastic clutch adjusted. I had that issue already.
Do bully cables have them in it already?
What if i have a 2014 road king with a cable clutch and a screaming eagle clutch....should i do this?
What foot controls are you using mate? Kind of like em. Look like they would suit my body length.
Great advice!!! Thank you.
Oh for Christ sake tell us WTF it is?💩
Man, I'll keep the 1993, 1997, & 2012. Y'all can keep the plastic & computer machines that HD is putting out, now. The CEO oversees sneakers & the one before him oversaw microwave ovens.🙄
Just ordered it.
Cable Clutch sadly came back in 2021
Cool looking bike! Where did you get your seat from? Do they make anything for the Pan America?
Cable slack is the width of a nickel…1/8 of a inch
Your worried about the sky falling dude !
Clutch cable adapter thingy. Lol
I just carry an AMA card.
I have a 21 RG and I have the cable clutch
Dude what type of fairing bracket u have?
surprised you have stock shift linkage still. Upgrade that son!
Thanks PA
If it’s mechanical it shouldn’t be plastic….Harley knows better…
Clutch adjuster?

What brakes
very valuable tips 👍🏻👌
shifter linkage
Hey James. Who cares how long it took. The point is John is pointing it out. If you already knew about it then you wouldn’t have been watching.
I've had seven harleys i've never had a problem with that😂
Is this a problem on the 2020 RG?
Look at your owners manual if you have the plastic adjuster. If no owners manual then Google it
What item?
I miss madmax.
Not me. Change is good 😊 patience my friend this build will be just as good

This could have literally been a 1 minute video
Over 4 minutes in people
Hmm flux capacitor?
If the motor falls off you’ll be stuck
Lol😂
Shirt linkage?
Really taking too long to get to the main topic!! Other than that, good video. Thanks.
Plastic cable adjuster
I don't think this will work on my indian 😂 snapped my clutch cable at 15k but I was my fault replaced handle bars with mid rise and changed levers to psr shortys. Bought a Barnett Cable and done 2 inch longer then stock
So you no with harley you Change one thing have to change a nother 😅
This video should have been 30 seconds . That is all the real information presented. Don’t waste your time
Key Fob
Fat bagger did when the bike was new in 21 that is the weak link
5 minutes in and still haven't gotten to the point. This isn't Dora the Explorer. Get on with it.
For F@%k sakes, nobody whats to hear all this unneccessary talking
You ate taking to long
