A fun but depressing reminder that Gradius used to be a videogame, and not a pachinko machine. Will some indie developer out there just ripoff the weapon upgrade system and make us a good Gradius clone already?

The game breaks the 4th wall after you beat the 2nd loop of the entire game where Dr. Venom gives Vic Viper a Wii remote says he developed an anti bacterian program
I wish games like Gradius, R-type, Assault Suits Leynos, and more shoot em ups would be made regularly like cheap Call of Battle or whatever those dime-a-dozen games are.
Those series take time, and ideas that are actually good, which would take longer than a year to get together and program. Call of Duty is mindless shit for mindless players, every year just seems new maps with new weapons, but same idea, no thought put into them.
For me apparently, some weapons from Gradius are partially implemented into Thunder Force starting with IV. For Example: Double orientation is implemented into CLAWS/CRAWS while mimicking any weapon displayed.
Those 2, and Contra Rebirth seem to be stuck in limbo. I still have my Wii with all 3 games on it, just hope the Wii has a very long life, so I can continue playing all 3 Rebirth games.
By loop 3 the suicide bullet count is so high, you have to hide behind the gunwall in the last stage. Not sure if this one has the usual 8 loop difficulty limit cap though I think Gradius V stopped getting harder come loop 10 (can't remember if this game only has 3 loops and it's all over). Any other game in the series has unlimited loops.
Worst thing was i bought a Wii U, migrated all my Wii stuff over to it. Didn't think sold the Wii U. Kept the Wii realised I couldn't redownload the stuff back:(
This connects directly to the MSX Gradius 2 and 3 games, at least in 2 anyways, where Venom works for the Bacterions. In Gradius V, the sentient brain final boss was once called Venom, though not sure if it connects with Dr Venom or not.
There's nods in this game, the blue machine 2:21 is from "The Snatcher" (PC Engine) it was called "Metal Gear Mk II", The flying skulls 18:03 which spit out blue flames make me think about the bone heads from "Castlevania Circle of Moon" It's not surprising as these games were developed by Konami. It's one of the easier games in the series, besides both original Game Boy titles. Yes, loops 2 and 3 can be insane, but loop 1 isn't that bad until very, very late in the game if you die, and recovery becomes harder. Trying playing Gradius III arcade, die even in stage 1, and good luck making a quick recovery on your next life (that game is merciless).
The Option Hunter (or Option Eater) enemy type can't actually hurt the Vic Viper. You'll notice all it does is take away the options from the ship in preparation for the end sequence.
@@knockers21 The Option Hunter in earlier games were there to knock the games rank (difficulty) down a bit without having to die to do so. The more powered up you are, the harder the game is, letting the Option Hunter steal an option or two helps lower the difficulty back down some. In this game, you don't see them till the end, they pull the exact same stunt as they did in Gradius Gaiden (which actually has them at random points in stages if you survive long enough).
I expected the Wii to have better graphics. This looks like something that could have been made for the original NES or Super Nintendo. It even has that slow effect when too many things on are the screen at once. I'm glad I didn't buy a Wii now.
ikaruga, Gradius IV is a bit old, but the game is still highly fun to play. Can get more brutal than Gradius 3 by loop 3. Just downloaded the game from Wii Shop, however some UA-cam vids I'm watching have different music for stage 1. Does it get unlocked later or something?
The alternative air battle theme is played when you select Type D or E aircrafts. So yes it is an unlockable since you need to beat the game once to unlock Type D and E.
Some videos used the original revision first released on the Wii, and later updated. Basically to get the update you had to delete the old version off the Wii, and since you paid for it, you could re-download it for free with the updated music in it.
@@Bloodreign1 Actually I figured it out! You're probably right too, but for me I beat the game once and the different song plays when you start stage 1 as a New Game Plus.
This is far superior to MD music as the MD chip could not match the excellent quality of arcade machine FM Synth. Only the Sharp X68000 stood toe to toe as that was also the guts of arcade machines at the time. It's a throwback game in the series, and a digital download. Gradius V also happens to be IMO the worst of the series, a HUGE letdown after the pinnacle of the series, Gradius Gaiden. Treasure tried to hard to make it like their shmups, and less like Gradius.

fireheartis1 Maybe I didn't get the purpose of the thing. As I said, Gradius V, for PS2, had much better graphics. But if the idea was to make something that looked like the previous ones, then it's ok.
Didn't make Gradius V a better game, far too many series staples not in it, to me Gradius Gaiden was the peak of the series. The music was grand thanks to Hitoshi Sakimoto, but the game felt incredibly bland IMO. I still have my copy because I love Gradius, but Gaiden sees far more play from me these days than V.
This feels like Gradius more than Gradius V. This was also a downloadable game, unlike Gradius V which was a DVD based game. This was also a throwback to fans of the originals, and fans of the MSX series. And you know what, this game just feels right as a Gradius game.
An opinion can only be so wrong, except in this case. Beauty is in the ear of the beholder, and you are quite alone on that. This game takes music from the older games, and gives them that arcade style Gradius III FM Synth sound, and crystal clear audio makes it sound so rich.
Idk man but the Gradius III inspired composition style seems like a perfect combination for a prequel imo. Especially when the legendary Manabu Namiki of Battle Garegga fame is involved with the game's music. Welp it's your opinion speaking so it's all fine lmao.

I wouldn't call it a "remake" I would say a "remix" or Tribute, because they took many ideas and re-imagined in a clever way some levels from all the past gradius games. Is not as good as Gradius Gaiden or Gradius V but is nice, and they actually introduced new enemies here, which is double nice. I really appreciate having a new Gradius game that is good an worth the time to check out, not like the shitty Gradius Galaxy. Actually, one of the best Gradius games (for me) is Gradius V and I would say that Treasure did an EXCELLENT Tribute to the saga, because they did the same thing as this guys, but to make it look different and "new", they used a different graphical approach, totally new in the series, which, I guess is what makes it feel like a "new" gradius game. I think the error here, is that they used the same graphical style that is well-known in the series, instead of giving it a new face, like Treasure Did. Maybe a little recommendation: If you're a Hardcore fan of Gradius, I would totally say "give it a try, you will like it". If you haven't play a Gradius game before, I would say "This is a nice game to start,". Besides, the wave system pleases Hardcore-fans as well.
