A lot of this game was reused in later games... Parodius is still one of my favorite series...^^ The Bonus Stage for example in Gradius 3, some of the Bosses and of course the Music in Parodius DA! (Or better: Parodius Non-Sense Fantasy for the SNES)... Also the graveyard stage has the exact same music in Parodius DA!...^^

The best you can do is shif all characters to a direction and "print" a new row or column of characters. It can do this pretty quickly. You can achieve smooth scroll by drawing the same tile 8 times, but shifting the tile 1 pixel per each variation. Then instead of shifting the whole screen, you just change the tile to next one "shifted" up until you changed it 7 times... *then* you do a whole shift of all tiles. Of course, doing this means you'll need 8 copies of each background tile, which would take a LOT of rom space. So it's either smooth scroll or repeated backgrounds. A few games did this trick... Pippols from Konami is one (so Konami could do if), but other games like Crusader, Rally-X and Exoide-Z also did it. Like it has been said, smooth scroll was easily achieved with the MSX2. At first you could only do vertical scroll, but coders later found a way to do it to any direction using the fact the VDP could change the position of the screen. And then MSX2+ had smooth scroll to any direction without any tricks.
so, i'm playing the version of this that's on the PSP collection (what a great little collection that is) but i'm stuck on the SECOND meat wall where you're supposed to move backwards and teleport (at around 21:15). is there some trick to it? even with quick saving i'm just dying again and again.. can't figure it out. anyone?
thanks for the reply, man. i don't know how it happened, but i just emulated the movement of the uploader, and somehow i was transported to the other side. gotta love these old games and lack of tutorials, rife with hidden gameplay functions!

check your settings. if your version is PAL, set your emulator or whatever to PAL. if NTSC, likewise, change to NTSC.

Turns out it was based on Nemesis 2 in terms of the power up UI.

You used pal machine to emulate the game,mostly machine to emulate are Japanese machine,which runs at 60 hz
