In the US, the can opener, oven mitt, tray, and rings would have been stolen along with anything else not bolted down. Not too mention, the machines would be broken into everyday.
That's always what impressed me about Japan during this video and during my trip there. There is no public trash cans or anything, yet Japan is nice and clean. We put one of those all vending machine places here in America and leave it unattended, It wouldn't shocked me if it was really dirty a week or two later.
Even though Japanese vending machines are high tech, what impresses me even more is that among the new shiny high tech ones, they also still have a bunch of older ones from the 70's and 80's, that are so well maintained they still work. Proof not only that they're made well but that the Japanese are very respectful and don't vandalise things.
In reality it’s a giant microwave cooking frozen foods, don’t believe all Japanese vending machine food are fresh when majority of them are frozen because it’s last longer and more expensive to keep restocking them with fresh ingredients
The honor system taken to a new level. I'm not a fan of vending machines but all the different vending machines in Japan look like fun to try out, you never no what you'll find.
We actually DID have restaurants like this in America once: as the name of the diner says, it was called an "Automat." They were quite popular during the Depression, when they allowed a lot of people to get a small meal for a nickel. (Marilyn Monroe mentions them in "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," too.) However, they lost popularity after WW2, and were largely gone by the 70's. It does make sense that the Japanese would hold on to the concept, though: ti probably came in with the occupying troops, and they've got the vending-machine technology to make it work!
+Nick Hentschel that's quite interesting as I didn't know America used to have stores like this. Probably wouldn't be cost effective to work today in America (or most countries) though as you would have to employ staff to run it... cause lets face it, all the machines would be broken into and the food and money will be gone by the next day. lol
Zauchi What did it in was inflation: while it only cost a nickel to use them at first, it didn't stay that way, and the machines were no longer convenient to use, if you couldn't pay with small change. Competition from modern fast-food joints didn't help, either. But this *might* be a convenient way to run a coffee shop . . . .
+Nick Hentschel , Where I work they recently started to install refrigerated and frozen food vending machines in the breakroom areas. We have microwave ovens in the breakroom areas so you can heat the food up if you want. I used to go with my mother to the University of Chicago Hospital and they had an extensive set of vending machines in the basement break area. Lots of canned items with pull tops. There was some sort of conventional oven you could use to heat up the cans. Canned stews, pastas, fruit cocktail, etc. Also one of the first microwave ovens to heat up other items that were not packed in metal cans. I would like to have the real MREs sold in the vending machines. Since we are a government agency that should be possible somehow.
Salute for the discipline of japanese people .. they respect all the places in their country.. look at the trash. They divide leftover and others into several cans They really do it
The thing that's so wonderful about Japan is that everyone just seems to have a duty of care. If this shop was in any other country, it'd be trashed up and messy. And all the random small things would be stolen lol.
Japan is civilized and respectful. They have integrity to keep the place clean and tidy. We in Western culture would have trashed the place in one day because we are lazy and couldn't give a damn.
If this was in the U.S. it would be vandalised. I can't believe no one tears things up. I'm so impressed with all you videos. I hope I can visit one day.
A GIRL AND A DOG we have a place like this in the US. Lol lots of travel stops, are like this. They too have shitty food, like the restaurant in the video.
None of the food looks particularly enticing to be honest but the general idea of the vending machine restaurant is interesting. In most other countries, it would probably not work. Miscreants would vandalise the place, steal the furniture and use it as a drug den but the Japanese are so clean, orderly and respectful of the law that they make it work. Man, I love the Japanese.
+jeffzalonka You're right on that - I'm part Japanese (grandparents live there) and have attended a few weeks of school way, way back in 5th grade. I can't remember if it was daily or every other day, but we would mop and clean the floors, desks, chalkboard, etc. for about 20 minutes when classes were almost over. During lunch, the students would volunteer to serve food for their class, and had to wear plastic coats and shower caps to keep everything clean. Definitely a culture that values being neat and tidy
There's no way something like this can exist in the U.S. for long or without huge overhead for vandalism. People just can't behave themselves enough here to keep a place like this open, let alone clean.
See in Japan the owner does not have to leave anyone there to watch it and the customers completely clean up behind themselves so that the next guess can have a clean place to eat. Here in America our people would leave there thrash on the table, not wipe the table off leave anything they drop on the floor on the floor and I am willing to bet it would take no more than 4 hours for someone to vandalize one of the machines. I am ashamed behind the way the majority of Americans behave.
I’m from Japan.I don’t think some people really understand the concept of this restaurant. These retro vending machines are rare here, so people try them for the experience. No one eats here on a daily basis.
Maron Maron Automats were a common thing in east coast cities in the U. S. many years ago. They fell out of favor because people made the assumption that the food was unhealthy and unsafe for some reason.

I remember during a FIFA World Cup, Japanese visitors who came to cheer for their team, cleaned up after themselves in stadium. That's how impressive they are.

not just that, there are people in the US that break into vending machines to get what they want. one of the reasons why there are less and less vending machines around these days. Kinda sad, takes me less than 3 min walk to get from my grandfather's house to the nearest vending machine in japan. here in LA, it takes me 7-9 min car drive to get to the nearest store >.>
I live in Kyoto and I can say it's relly nice and peaceful and other people look out for each other, but there are some times when a man his hitting his girlfriend and no one steps in but if i'm there he's going night night,i've been almost arrested for that but got off when people speak up and defend me. but other then that it's nice and the kids from the Elementary to High School are excited to see a foreigner so you'll be asked questions about your homeland and I'm still asked what its like in america. And if your in Kyoto i recommend to stop by the famous street food to try the wagu beef stand and the tangerine in mochi it;s so good, and hop to see you there!
Japan has to be one of the most clean country on earth. They have allot of emphasis on hygiene. Definitely somewhere I'd live permanently. Their food is good and their people are very genuine
I cant believe they are truly provide best solutions to business and white collar type that always busy that have not time for restaurants. Pretty convenience too.
I like this place alot. We cant have anything this nice where I'm from. Things gotta be bolted to the floor here or it's gone. Not to mention the cleanliness Factor. Wow blown away. I'm lucky if I'm not arguing with a homeless about my left overs out side of a restaurant. ...I wana go to Japan now
MANY years ago they had restaurants called Automats in the USA. These were kinda faux vending machines since freshly made dishes such as sandwiches, pies and hot foods like soups, veggies or salads were set in boxes with clear doors. Prices were labeled clearly and you deposited the amount and the door unlocked. Cooks replaced items behind the wall of "vending machines" as needed. Cheap, fresh and fast food for office workers! Sadly these Automats went out of business and only a display is in the Smithsonian. I remember one as a 5 year old and thought it was fun to put coins in to pull out a really nice treat when traveling!
FYI a nearly identical concept has been getting very popular with the techie's lately. I don't remember the name of the company but it's basically what you described but with a modern digital tech twist. You can find the video here on UA-cam if you're interested.
To Mr John You know a lot about Japan! In Japan in the 1960s and 1970s, Famiiiys became available to buy cars. Many "drive-in * Japanese English" with vending machines along the road were made. Such vending machines are already extinct. It is run by a shopkeeper with a retrospective hobby.
yeah, that is what i am most impressed by, japan truly has a culture of dignity and respect (as ironic as it is that they produce such bizarre entertainment)
Damn, The Japanese are living it, one of the safest countries and all the tech and stuff like that (EDIT) by the way in the US the bottle opener would've probably been stolen 5 minutes on its opening
Link Hoss Neal naiive observation. Japanese workplaces has one of the highest suicidal rates in the world because its streassful and long working hours.
it only works because the Japanese are so clean and respectful. if you tried it in the USA everything would have to be bolted and chained down and you would need at least one person to throw away garbage and scrub up the mess all day
People here in the U.S are so fucking nasty they cant even respectfully use the restroom without getting feces everywhere. A place like this in the U.S would literally get covered in piss and shit in a matter of hours.
Very true, its a shame how most Americans behave. I worked retail management for over 20 years and some days we would have to clean bathrooms every 2 hours were they would Lee and crap on everything.
Here in Modesto California it would not last long. The oven mitts, the spatula, and the tray would be gone in "60 seconds" not to mention people craving various etchings in the plastic covering the machines. I like the idea though
I lived in Central California and work in the Bay Area. The place would be tagged with graffiti, homeless people would be living inside it, and a line of RVs parked in front.
@@geno5592 Lolz as of right now I'm only in 9th grade. I fucked up and bit more than I can chew by taking an ap class. If you asked me how things were, Id say.... they could be better lolz
The funniest part was when he was talking about the sandwich at 5:07. You clearly see him acknowledge the oven mitt and the tongs and you clearly see him anticipate the food would be too hot to touch. He acknowledges they are there for that reason and that he will need them. Yet when the machine dispenses the toasted sandwich he uses his bare hands to grab the hot piping sandwich. Then you see him immediately jerk away because it was too hot! Why would you set yourself like this my poor, poor, silly, goofy man !?!?
What a cool place! Wish we had something similar here in the states. It never ceases to amaze me how clean things are kept in Japan. It’s not like that here. Things get carved up and graffitied and just start looking trashy all too often. Great vid! Thanks for posting! ✌🏻🙂✌🏻

Kinda sad, takes me less than 3 min walk to get from my grandfather's house to the nearest vending machine in japan. here in LA, it takes me 7-9 min car drive to get to the nearest store >.>
when I visited Japan, you could literally leave your backpack/purse/bag/etc out in the open and not have to worry about it being taken
And if your in Kyoto i recommend to stop by the famous street food to try the wagu beef stand and the tangerine in mochi it;s so good, and hop to see you there!
demoman87 you also have cameras on every corner.
This is a such a weaboo ass comment. If you live in the US, you must live in the ghetto because I don’t hear about people stealing stuff like that.
Japan has to be one of the most clean country on earth. They have allot of emphasis on hygiene. Definitely somewhere I'd live permanently. Their food is good and their people are very genuine
shakil Real the only reason I would like Japan is because I like Japanese food, i am mostly Japanese, and I would love their sex hotels.
I cant believe they are truly provide best solutions to business and white collar type that always busy that have not time for restaurants. Pretty convenience too.
Couldn't have this in the U.S..
The place would be trashed and anything not nailed down would be stolen...
I love how the Japanese are considerate of others and clean up. In U.S. something like that would be a dump after a few hours.
That was my first thought as well.
100% right lol
Tiana Coats descipline is very strong in japan and is taught through out school/life
I really like this guy. He's like a Mr. Rogers Tours Japan. Very sweet & mellow. 👍👏👏👏👏
I like this place alot. We cant have anything this nice where I'm from. Things gotta be bolted to the floor here or it's gone. Not to mention the cleanliness Factor. Wow blown away. I'm lucky if I'm not arguing with a homeless about my left overs out side of a restaurant. ...I wana go to Japan now
This is many reasons why I want to live in Japan
"And that makes this place truly only in Japan"
Says: bon appetit
Bro
Marlon James Dimailig ITADAKIMASU!
@Friigid Dragon thanks for your unsolicited comment
Lol no way.
How did they survive the drug addicts and youth gangs?
FYI a nearly identical concept has been getting very popular with the techie's lately. I don't remember the name of the company but it's basically what you described but with a modern digital tech twist. You can find the video here on UA-cam if you're interested.
@@warpspeeddontrainbowreadme9179 You watch too many '80s movies & music videos.
To Mr John
You know a lot about Japan!
In Japan in the 1960s and 1970s, Famiiiys became available to buy cars.
Many "drive-in * Japanese English" with vending machines along the road were made.
Such vending machines are already extinct.
It is run by a shopkeeper with a retrospective hobby.
I have bad anxiety when I order food. Id love this
Kayla Tanner I am the same. And I have anxiety waiting for it after I order and I don’t know why
Learn to socialise or u will never survive society
in any other country, something like this would be trashed first week...
Yea, when fake gangster comes in
how easily the people of japan can be trusted with these
The Japanese are technologically advanced and disciplined
It’s just an oversize microwave vending machine
Sweet, a place I can go to where I won't feel judged by how much food I order 😂
This sort of thing would be vandalised even before being installed in a shop here in Australia.
Same in the US
Same in UK
yeah, that is what i am most impressed by, japan truly has a culture of dignity and respect (as ironic as it is that they produce such bizarre entertainment)
This is good place for introvert people..
We need this in school
Damn, The Japanese are living it, one of the safest countries and all the tech and stuff like that
(EDIT) by the way in the US the bottle opener would've probably been stolen 5 minutes on its opening
Link Hoss Neal naiive observation. Japanese workplaces has one of the highest suicidal rates in the world because its streassful and long working hours.
and sexual assaults are on the rise
it only works because the Japanese are so clean and respectful.
if you tried it in the USA everything would have to be bolted and chained down and you would need at least one person to throw away garbage and scrub up the mess all day
People here in the U.S are so fucking nasty they cant even respectfully use the restroom without getting feces everywhere. A place like this in the U.S would literally get covered in piss and shit in a matter of hours.
Very true, its a shame how most Americans behave. I worked retail management for over 20 years and some days we would have to clean bathrooms every 2 hours were they would Lee and crap on everything.
"It's a toasted sandwich. What did you expect." That made me laugh so hard.
Put one of these in New York City and it'll become the newest high-school bathroom.
The whole place would be stripped naked in a day and after that turned into a junkie hideout
If this was in America some piece of trash would have stolen those tongs, oven mitt and bottle opener
Same in uk 😄
Sucks that we can’t have cool stuff like this
...and all the vending machines would be vandalised, trashed.
If these machines were in America, someone would have stolen the tongs, oven mitt and the tray before for the end of the first day.
write2ap lol.
People do it everywhere except Japan
If it were America... People would steal everything then make the place a homeless camp
Sure they would (sarasm).
Congrats for reaching 5 million views! I remember watching this one the day it came out :)
This is the greatest channel ever
I'm dying to visit Japan and once my college is over, I surely will
Please give this man a TV show.
+ItsLD YES! He needs one!
+Chiisai Otaku He has!
+SUPERGENKI JAPAN really?
on travel channel yeah
Sanatan_ 59 On Japanese TV
Sometimes I wonder how Japan evolved into a high trust society there are not many places like that around the world.
for centuries the people of Japan have placed a very high emphasis on honor and respect.
They really need to have more of these around the world.
This is like my 4th time watching this - but first time commenting....about time lol
good place to eat when youre hungry at 3am
@@Around-The-Verse which is a good thing before people will sleep in there
Japanese honor system keeps the place clean. In the States, the place would be trashed and looted within an hour.
No it wouldn't.
Here in Modesto California it would not last long. The oven mitts, the spatula, and the tray would be gone in "60 seconds" not to mention people craving various etchings in the plastic covering the machines. I like the idea though
I also live in the central valley and unfortunately I find this to be true.
I lived in Central California and work in the Bay Area. The place would be tagged with graffiti, homeless people would be living inside it, and a line of RVs parked in front.
This guy's documentaries are next level. it's like its 2007 and I'm lying in bed watching tv after school
Ah 2007 my best year in high school. I wish I can go back lol
@@geno5592 Lolz as of right now I'm only in 9th grade. I fucked up and bit more than I can chew by taking an ap class. If you asked me how things were, Id say.... they could be better lolz
2:07 *Gordon Ramsey vomited*
I like this guy, too respectively eats even if he doesnt like it
We are living in 2017 meanwhile Japan is in 3017
Senkei yeah
Yep lol
No wonder it is so expensive there
I love the artwork inside, seems very personal and as the people who run the place love their business.
Seeing a bottle opener withoud a chain or chord is alien to my culture.
Your voice is good for english dub anime.
The mindset in Japan is so different. I absolutely love it.
This kind of "restaurant" is such a great idea. I would love to go there with friends.
Daniel Kim HAHAHAHAHHA THIS COMMENT IS SO FUNNY
Introvert paradise
The honour system.
This is the sort of thing you can have in a high trust homogeneous country.
What a cool place! Wish we had something similar here in the states. It never ceases to amaze me how clean things are kept in Japan. It’s not like that here. Things get carved up and graffitied and just start looking trashy all too often. Great vid! Thanks for posting!
