  • The Memphis traditions of jazz, blues and rock all converge in the fingers of Calvin Newborn. In the early '50s on Beale Street, his flamboyant stage presence as "Flying Calvin" inspired the young Elvis and his musical abilities influenced the young B.B. In the mid-fifties the career of his brother Phineas Newborn Jr. took off (Phineas was one of the most sophisticated and talented jazz pianists' to ever live) and Calvin was there touring and recording in Phineas's band which led him to stints with other jazz greats including Sun Ra, Earl Hines and Hank Crawford. Calvin now lives in Florida but happily returned to Memphis for this 2010 performance at the Levitt Shell which hosts 50+ free concerts a year.

I was at this show. Got some great pics. Never saw him before. Was a lifelong fan after. We lost a great. Wish I could have seen him again. This video does not do justice but glad we have it to see.

Wow!!! Man......that is one hell of a performance, and what I take away from it is that this is one of the few times I've ever heard anyone play a tune at that tempo. That is one difficult tempo to play on and to keep a groove going on. A whole lot of guys think that it is tough to play fast but it's much much more difficult to play slow but with that much taste. In addition it grooves. Calvin is a national treasure when it comes to a legend of the guitar and should be known and acknowledged for it because he's a link to the earliest of the traditions of blues, jazz, rock n roll, R & B and many other elements to his incredible playing. Wish he would play in NYC one more time so I could catch him and tell him how much I dig his playing all the way from the first records with his amazing brother and genius of the piano, Phineas Newborn Jr. Bless you, Calvin for your great playing and for all of the many contributions to the art of music and the art of you!

Was looking for the name of this tune. Great video. Believe it or not reading a book on Brubeck brought me here (discussing Phineas).

That's one of those dirty, slow tempos that separates the men from the boys! Von Freeman in Chicago is another master of those slow-ass greasy grooves!

This is the cat!! When he was young they called him Flying Calvin. Elvis was deeply influenced by him.
Later he became more of a jazzman, less of a showman. Great guy.

I had never heard of him until last year when I saw an album photo of him leaping about 8 feet into the air doing the splits while clutching a heavy guitar
