Calvin Newborn & Phineas Newborn, Jr. - two giants of jazz & Memphis music

The sound quality ain't the greatest but it may be the only video to be found on the UA-cam of these fabulously talented Newborn brothers playing together. Calvin leads with an extended guitar solo before Phineas takes a break on piano. The song is "Centerpiece" - the title tune from an album Calvin made with Hank Crawford. Concert at the Overton Park Shell in 1988. Probably filmed by Phil Sisk aka "Phil the Filmmaker".

Phineas __Piano__Calvin __Guitar_____Jeff Grayer _Drums and Eroll Thomas __Bass__Herman Green _Tenor Saxophone and William "Nokie" Taylor __Cornet____I lived in Memphis for 37 years 1975 to 2012 and had the good fortune to know and play with these fellows on many occasions (on trumpet, Cornet &Flugelhorn). It helped me to get through the RIGORS of the daily grind of a job. It enabled me to wax optimistic and to feel that there is a reward for diligence in sticking to the straight and narrow path to success.

Thanks so much for posting this! I played a good deal with Calvin in NE Florida during the last decade of his life and although he played me several audio cassettes of him and his brother Phineas playing together, this is the first video I’ve ever seen!!!!
