This tune was a response to the 1980s Thacherite government's section 28. It was illegal to promote any form of LGBTQ+, so gay kids were "the baby of the class." This is one of the greatest Erasure tunes ever.
My fav Erasure song. I loved them. Apparently, Vince Clarke needed a voice similar to Alison Moyet and got Andy Bell - I do get that being an alto. I always thought Andy Bell looked like Jimmy Cagney!
Erasure is always fun. This came off The Innocents album, which to me, was their very best. Back when we still bought tapes/albums, The Innocents was the first Erasure tape I ever bought. Ty Bryson. :) (Keep in mind, Vince Clark was the songwriter for Depeche Mode for the first year, but left because he wanted to go in his more pop-disco-y direction, while DM went very dark when Martin took over the songwriting duties).
First erasure single I ever bought, quickly followed by many more. I've since seen them 6 times and never tire of hearing Ship of Fools. My mum took me to see them when I was 12 as she loved them. Years and years later I took my son to see them. The power of erasure is strong in this household!! 😂
My favourite Erasure song is also another where he hits the lower register for parts of the song. You Surround Me. It’s just…..amazing. Possibly a direct descendent of this song. One of a handful of slower Erasure songs at the time. They added many more in later albums.
This song has been the most timeless of the Erasure songs over the years. It’s my favorite one to listen to until this day, thanks so much for reacting to it! As for other timeless tunes: Have you checked out Terence Trent D’Arby’s “Sign Your Name” yet?
I am telling myself you played this for me lol. I asked you for this from the first time you played an Erasure song. The whole song and the vid are hauntingly beautiful and that hook...delicious!
If we're talking The Innocents, you HAVE to hear Witch In The Ditch, Imagination and The Phantom Bride. Was brought up on Erasure (born in 1984, Erasure formed in 1985, my parents had all the albums and some singles) love them, and Vinces other acts (Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly).
This is a concert they did well before their more modern stuff, as over the top and as theatrical as you can get ( so you know Andy Bell was in charge of all that ) as Vince Clark is as straight as they come and only cracks a smile once every full moon. But it gives you a glimpse into the music you may never hear otherwise. And see what a voice and showman Andy Bell comprises off. And shows off Vince's genius in this genre. Remember this is only a few albums into their career. I PROMISE it is worth the 2 hour watch. ua-cam.com/video/hGzUFJUG0yk/v-deo.html Note: This was a time when being as gay as you could be on stage was no big deal. It did not limit who listened to you in most parts of the world. But the big boys in the U.S. made in clear it would not be tolerated over there , so basically did their best to crush any chances of breaking into the U.S. Things actually went backwards for a time after that. ( I am straight but found the judgment and stigma put on them as disgusting ) Good music is good music, no matter who makes it. And these two are legends of the genre.
A lot of B-Sides from singles or remixes. They wrote so many good songs they had to put them somewhere.." I suppose" hint hint .. ( in this concert. So you may hear songs you literally can not buy or even know exist unless you were a hardcore fan .) . No lip syncing etc... Vince and Andy do live versions different enough you know it is " live " . ...But pretty sure Andy Bell could stand on a street corner and belt out a tune. Another to see how they change the songs for live audiences. They really value their fans experiences... ua-cam.com/video/e3lcKHuFsX4/v-deo.html A couple of years later... ua-cam.com/video/W8Yf7ZMrvh0/v-deo.html Designed to be a minimalistic show to it could be done in small town right across the U.K.
Oh this is such a beautiful song and one of my favourites from Erasure. You said you could listen to a couple more minutes of this and if you are into extended mixes, I'd highly recommend the 'Shiver Me Timbers' mix of this song ua-cam.com/video/92Px5a8xGgw/v-deo.html&ab_channel=3slowhand Would love to see you react to their song 'Drama' next.
Great stuff man .. If you like Erasure.. This was Vince Clark's band before Erasure ... Yazoo (Yaz in the US) The soulful sound of Alison Moyet ... This was the first time she had been on television ua-cam.com/video/w67Uspp_PsQ/v-deo.html

This is always been my favorite Erasure song. Tragically underrated in my opinion. Another great selection!
Andy Bell, one of the most talented, underrated and nicest people in popmusic.

And had Feargal Sharkey of the Undertones in between with The Assembly - so another falsetto
