A backdoor spin off? Never heard of that until now, but it makes sense for an established show to do that for a potential new show. It's cheaper. The network pays for the 'pilot' and fans are none the wiser. I wonder how many of these 'backdoor shows' snuck past me in my formative years. I remember how devastated I was when I found out celebrities didn't just drop by night time talk shows to visit the host. They were only there to promote a new show or movie. It was never as innocent and friendly as it seemed.
Mistake 1: Martin was 1 of the best sitcoms. No, it was the best sitcom! Mistake 2: It failed because you don’t fix what’s not broken! #Classic 25+ years later this show is as funny and versatile as it gets! And it’s still relevant!
I get what you’re saying but that’s not the point of spin-offs. They create spin-offs because they believe there’s a supporting character strong enough to carry their own show. Plus by the time they shot that episode, the show was already preparing for cancellation at that point anyway so we wouldn’t have had a Martin show during the 1997-98 run regardless, so it would’ve been perfect timing since we wouldn’t have to worry about having a Martin show with no Pam.
I get it, hindsight is 20/20...but I think the spinoff could have worked with some minor tweaks. Get rid of Trey and Tony, make Dante (Tyrese) a regular, and maybe add another female character. I'd keep the backdoor pilot exactly as is, and the first episode of the actual spinoff about the changes I mentioned.
FINALLY! Someone who knows that the phrase is spelled “could have” and not “could of.” I got so excited when I saw correct grammar that I just had to comment lol. Ok, carry on….
OH, that guy who played TONY is SAL from the 1980's NIGHT OF THE DEMONS. Its before my time, but I love horror movies..and he was one of my favorite characters.
Heh, I remember Pam's backdoor pilot. It was pretty funny, but I can think of a couple of possible reasons why her show was never greenlit: - As entertaining as the pilot was, it always seemed too derivative of Martin itself, at least to me (Pam was acting almost exactly like a female Martin most of the time by that point). While it was probably one of the better episodes of Season 5, Martin itself was in decline, and after ending the show, maybe Fox didn't want a show so much like it to follow it up. - The late '90's were also around the time the networks were starting to cater more to age demographics than race demographics. Black shows were getting canceled left and right by then (In Living Color, Living, Single, and New York Undercover were canceled in the same period as Martin), and very few black shows that came out after that were given a shot to last more than a couple seasons unless they were on the WB or UPN. With TV catering more to age demographics by the 2000's, most shows with mostly minority casts were "frozen out" of TV lineups for years afterward.
@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? Definitely not. Different dynamic completely and GG had no men in the cast just regular guest appearances by Stan, etc.
@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? Not sure it is a copy, more like an inspired by. And Pam didn't live with the other 3 women, she had her own place.
Martin my favorite show of all time in the 90s. I have a list of favorite shows in the 90s. The spin off with Pam would b a great idea but unfortunately it didn't make it
I just looked at this episode about 9 days ago with Pam and the new introduction to her spin-off that was brilliant I always felt like Pam should have been Gina Clyde was easL from Friday
That "Goin' For Mine" episode was atrocious. This was when the "Pam" character was overtly becoming a female Martin. And that didn't have to happen. Pam was hilarious in her own right.
Messin' me up, my whole head Teasin' me just like Tisha did Martin Now look at what you're startin' Schoolboy's crush, and it ain't on the hush The whole world see it, but you can't My peoples, they complain, sit and rave, and rant Your name is out my mouth like an ancient chant Got me like a dog as I pause and pant - Q-Tip
So we’re not going to talk about WHY Tisha Campbell did what she did? Martin and Tisha were both married when she “accused” Martin of harassment. In 94’ Tisha married Duane Martin and it was rumored that he was uncomfortable with the love scenes Tisha did with Martin and to rectify the situation they did a lot of off screen love scenes in respect of their marriage. Then Tisha started complaining about not being the focal point of show named after it’s star so she tried to muscle a better deal and got shot down by the network. That’s when she filed the lawsuit. People ask why nothing ever came of it was because Martin decided to end the show even though they were considering Regina King as Tisha’s replacement since she worked with Martin in ‘A Thin Line Between Love and Hate’ so basically the spinoff could have happened if Tisha didn’t do what she did to Martin
I remember watching that episode and thinking to myself they must be introducing a new spin-off show. But then it never happened and I was a little confused
They were dating while doing the house party movies the actors who played kid and play had said that another reason she got mad because Martin Lawrence was being offered movie roles when he got the love and hate movie and bad boys movie she started to get mad she wasn't a good actress Pam was better than her
Please, do not spoil this great show's legacy by reuniting this show. Tommy is dead and the show did all it could. It would be if they made another Friday movie, even though the two top leads are dead.
That lawsuit and Tisha being absent all those episodes caused a huge domino effect because I believe had that never effected the show, the audience would’ve been more committed and introduced to seeing that back door pilot which would’ve greenlit the show. I remember in another interview Tichina said it was hard for her to find work those 8 years in between Martin and EHC. I hated that for her but sometimes the next blessing can take years.
Man how many more seasons could the show have gone for if there was no drama..wish we coulda got at least another 2 seasons without the drama and some more classic moments.
I honestly think after about 4- 5 seasons, most black sitcoms run their course of freshness. Martin was probably a 5-year show regardless of the offset drama. You could tell that Martin had progressed from wild, young, raw comic which made the show funny the 1st two seasons, to a more seasoned celebrity comic that was not as raw, and a little more corporate. The show was still good but definitely wasn't must see those last couple of seasons. It was time.
Martin and Tisha made up after she separated from Duane 🤔🤔🤔. She accepted a call from a man she sued and said he sexually harassed her. I'm glad she forgave him, but I'm iffy on the timing of him calling though. I've always wondered what really happened behind the scenes. Tisha and Martin really seemed close back then like possibly a couple there chemistry was off the chart. I know he and tichina dated but 🤔🤔 . I know we will never know what happened though.
Exactly when I seen her getting a divorce the rumors of her husband being gay must be true then her and Martin reunite I knew all the rumors were true Martin and Gina was secretly dating she had to make a choice between the two
I THOUGHT I watched all the Martin episodes but I don’t remember this at all! But I do remember the finale. It was all we talked about in school the next day, the fact the two leads literally were never in a scene together. Now that I think about it, since they’re cool with each other again, why not just refill the finale the way it should’ve been done and just use de-aging cgi on everyone.
I'm glad the spinoff failed. I love Tichina and she's a great supporting actress but not strong enough to be the lead one. Personally, I despise spinoffs as they usually don't work. I think the only successful spinoff was Fraiser from cheers. All other spinoffs are rubbish.
I remember this spin-off now!!! I WAS 5 IN 97,But I seen all of season 5 of Martin live when it came on. They don't show reruns of season 5, and I brought season 1-4 on DVD didn't want season 5.But this spin off looked good for a work place comedy wit aj Johnson and Pam and Stevie from the parkers on it. It would've been funny.

That’s literally how half of the shows out got there start. Notably Family Matters and The Jefferson’s were back door spin-offs
As well as The Game and Parkers,A Different World,Jeffersons, Simpsons

Pam spin off reminds me of Queen Latifa role in Single Ladies with a Jamie in the Jamie Foxx show twist
Living Single, and yes it would have a Jamie Foxx twist but Pam wanted to work in the music industry not sing, Jamie wanted to sing.
Amazing how they kept it together during that hard time and kept it professional..I don’t think that Pam shoe would last long though
This sounds like the plot of half & half
This was one of my favorite episodes I didn't know she could've had a show!
Mistake 1: Martin was 1 of the best sitcoms. No, it was the best sitcom!
Mistake 2: It failed because you don’t fix what’s not broken! #Classic
25+ years later this show is as funny and versatile as it gets! And it’s still relevant!
Spin offs don't try to to fix shows. They are just a different show in the same universe. There are a lot of successful spin offs.
For example Different Strokes was not broken but The Facts of Life was still a good show. So I disagree with your take.
Had no idea about the Pam-Martin spinoff Thank you
I get it, hindsight is 20/20...but I think the spinoff could have worked with some minor tweaks.
@@LadyDuchess Haha that's so annoying! Same with "supposably" instead of "supposedly".
Martin & Living Single line up were life back in the day😂❤
Yea kinda knew this with the pam getting a job on the record label..as a spin off..it had that feel..
OH, that guy who played TONY is SAL from the 1980's NIGHT OF THE DEMONS. Its before my time, but I love horror movies..and he was one of my favorite characters.
Heh, I remember Pam's backdoor pilot. It was pretty funny, but I can think of a couple of possible reasons why her show was never greenlit:
- As entertaining as the pilot was, it always seemed too derivative of Martin itself, at least to me (Pam was acting almost exactly like a female Martin most of the time by that point).
Yup
Living Single got copied and replaced by Friends in every imaginable and measurable sense of the words, copied and replaced 🤬
@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? Definitely not. Different dynamic completely and GG had no men in the cast just regular guest appearances by Stan, etc.
@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? never happened
@Why The Hell Was I In Star Trek 6? Not sure it is a copy, more like an inspired by. And Pam didn't live with the other 3 women, she had her own place.
The 5th season was the Martin cartoon.
It was a great pilot and could have worked. At least we almost got the same premise in the show Half and Half.
80's - 90's got some of the best sitcoms.
70s and 2000s too.
I still need that Shenehne and Wanda movie!

Funny how right under this video I see an ad promoting Martin’s new reunion show on BET+
I liked Pam and all but I was not interested in that spinoff at all. Glad Tichina landed on Everybody Hates Chris
I remember the Married With Children back door pilot. It was so odd the way it focused on people outside of the Bundy house.
That "Goin' For Mine" episode was atrocious. This was when the "Pam" character was overtly becoming a female Martin. And that didn't have to happen. Pam was hilarious in her own right.
Yep a Martin clone..You can see the difference in her character in that episode for sure
Yeah right but you notice in that reunion picture she is next to Carl Payne in Martin is next to Tichina.
That Pam spin off would had been dope. It looked like it would had been a hit. I would supported it.
Tichina deserves recognition and higher pay for her work in classic TV shows such as One-on-One and Everybody Hates Chris.
They should've given Bruh Man his own show 🤣
Bruh Man was so hilarious on the show. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
They should've had pam and cole spin off that would be so good kinda like billy and mandy
i literally watched this show as a kid and thought it was martin not even knowing it was a spin off.
Messin' me up, my whole head
Teasin' me just like Tisha did Martin
Now look at what you're startin'

They don’t know even know bro. Great reference 💯💪🏿
One of my favorite songs by Tribe
Backdoor Pilot: Perfect Strangers had Carol and Harriette Winslow from family matters.
Do one jackee harris spin off from 227
Awww pam its too weird for them to spin off martin without the full cast but itbwas nice i feel all the characters should have mini plots really
It will NOT be a reunion special w/o Tommy…😞
I remember watching that episode and thinking to myself they must be introducing a new spin-off show. But then it never happened and I was a little confused
I truly believe Duane Martin was the person that had Tisha go as far as she did with harassment!...
Of course it was, my understanding was Tisha and Martin actually dated at one point and Duane couldn't stand that the two of them had a past
They were dating while doing the house party movies the actors who played kid and play had said that another reason she got mad because Martin Lawrence was being offered movie roles when he got the love and hate movie and bad boys movie she started to get mad she wasn't a good actress Pam was better than her
Now that episode makes sense. I really like that episode and would've loved to see that on UPN back in the day.
2:57 that animation would have been 🔥
Please, do not spoil this great show's legacy by reuniting this show. Tommy is dead and the show did all it could. It would be if they made another Friday movie, even though the two top leads are dead.
Craig, Smokey and Day Day are not dead. You mean Co-leads?
At least Tisha joined the reunion. 5:55 with Pam was inspirational
Tichina was also on Life with Fran for its season
He was in the episode with Pam cousin getting the record deal. Martin was the cousin’s Manager.
But what does that episode?? Have to do with this video???
This video is awesome. Great job
Thank you kindly.
I remember that episode, it was terrible!!! I immediately new pam wouldn’t get a spin-off
That lawsuit and Tisha being absent all those episodes caused a huge domino effect because I believe had that never effected the show, the audience would’ve been more committed and introduced to seeing that back door pilot which would’ve greenlit the show. I remember in another interview Tichina said it was hard for her to find work those 8 years in between Martin and EHC. I hated that for her but sometimes the next blessing can take years.
I've watched martin 10000000000000 times and don't remember this episode

I have never seen that Pam back pilot episode and I was obsessed with the series as a kid. So weird. I'm gonna look for it though.
Same, I've watched every episode and never saw this
Man how many more seasons could the show have gone for if there was no drama..wish we coulda got at least another 2 seasons without the drama and some more classic moments.
I remember these episodes, but I never knew about the potential spin-off show and beef between Tisha Campbell & Martin Lawrence at that time.
Martin's door scene calling Pam! What's happening Clint Beast wood was funny😅.
Wow creep? Why he got to be a creep? Anytime A man acts like anything other than a neutered dog he's labeled a creep these days. Damn I miss the 90s
WAIT! there was a Martin spin off?
The best sitcom, so creative
I'm glad the spinoff failed. I love Tichina and she's a great supporting actress but not strong enough to be the lead one. Personally, I despise spinoffs as they usually don't work. I think the only successful spinoff was Fraiser from cheers. All other spinoffs are rubbish.
Shows like The Game, Family Matters, and The Parkers to name a few were successful. It does seem to be in the minority though for success
@@gsignaturemessage there's even more spin offs than that went on to be successful
I hope we get that reunion!
