Out of the three spin-offs, I think the Nicole Eggbert spin-off could have actually been really good if utilized correctly. However, it has it's obvious strengths and weaknesses (with it's weaknesses being a significant problem). THE GOOD (strengths): Nicole Eggbert alone would have made me watch the show and the dude who played Tackleberry in the Police Academy films is an EXCELLENT comedic actor, so if I was writing the show I would feature him as much as Nicole Eggbert. Also, the Torkelson's girl is a really good actress so I would have utilized her character as well. Those three actors are definitely the three main stars that would make me watch the show and the writers should have used those three the most. Also, if the Sarah Powell character had been allowed to stick around, that would have been great since that's FOUR awesome characters I would have really liked for this series and would have made me want to watch this spin-off. THE BAD (weaknesses): That Balki / Perfect Strangers rip-off character is NOT good. I just keep thinking that character is the "Coke Zero" version of Balki. LMAO. It's NOT good. Same applies to the Pauly Shore rip-off... it's the "Coke Zero" of Pauly Shore rip-offs. Both Not-Pauly Shore and Not-Balki need to leave. I'm neutral towards the mom (I don't hate her, but not in love with her either, but her character can be utilized as an effective way to move a plot forward). If I had to pick, I would keep the mom for plot reasons but would lose the two Balki / Pauly Shore characters. THE UGLY (ultra weaknesses): That controversial Mexico related line that came out of Nicole Eggbert's mouth... WTF was that?!? LMAO. Even by 1990 standards, that was pretty horrendous. They need better writers or at least someone that can edit the scripts effectively and filter out the more controversial stuff and just make the stories focus on light hearted and fun stuff. OVERALL (in conclusion... I'm writing a damn essay... how did that happen?!? LMAO): Center the show around Nicole Eggbert, the Tackleberry guy, the Torkelson's girl, and Sarah Powell (IF she's allowed to stick around, I would hope she can stay) and keep the mom around for plot progression reasons (and for the mom to be the "Deus Ex Machina" for the other characters when they get themselves into a crazy situation they can't get out of and need to be bailed out. LMAO). Lose fake Balki and fake Pauly Shore and for the love of humanity, have the writers stick to more fun and light hearted stuff and keep away from any controversial stuff. LOL. On a last note, I personally like Scott Baio as a director. I've seen him direct some Charles in Charge episodes and other shows like Out of This World and he does a great job with the actors in all the episodes I've seen him direct. So I would have gotten Scott Baio to be the main director of this show.
So the parents in the 3rd backdoor spinoff pilot were fine with Nicky the East European foreign exchange student but not with a Mexican boyfriend for Amanda ???
No but there are definite similarities. The Yesterday Cafe was introduced during season 4 after Lillian sold her pizza making restaurant and bought an old diner which she transformed into The Yesterday Cafe.
The car wash situation was by far the better of the three. May have been difficult to come up with sustainable plots every episode. Perhaps a fonz type character and a lenny & squigy types would've made it more entertaining. Even a pinky & leather tucadareo. Plus various characters who visit the car wash on a regular basis.
Aunt Vanessa should have visited Aunt Sally and bought the car wash business from her, thus becoming the crazy new owner thereof. The madcap rich socialite then sells the whole operation, hires the remaining employees as her personal household staff and takes them all on a globe trekking sojourn around the world for more wacky adventures.
I’m ashamed of my 80’s/90’s TV/sitcom illiteracy in that I’ve zero recollection of the Almost Home/the Torkelsons Series. Can’t wait to watch on them UA-camns.
My teen self would have watched the last spin-off attempt just for more Nicole Eggery who I thought was the hottest woman who was ever born back then. I thought I remembered her being pretty popular but maybe it was just me thinking that. Definitely not hard to see why none of these took off. I guess to be fair given the quality of most syndicated sitcoms of the time, they probably weren't much worse then what was already out there (there is a reason Charles in Charge succeeded, it's competition in first run syndicated sitcoms was not exactly Friends or Seinfeld) but can't see any but the last one being able to pull years worth of stories out of them, and that one would have likely been a re-hash of what other sitcoms have done better.
I'm stuck on the premise that a character's professor asks one of his students to temp as an assistant manager in a hotel. Hard to imagine why this show didn't last in prime time.
Another interesting spinoff attempt was the ORIGINAL Empty Nest starring Rita Moreno in a Golden Girls episode. She portrayed a doctor's wife whose only child, a daughter, is away at college, and is feeling ignored by her husband due to his devotion to his medical career. It was never picked up by the network, paving the way for the actual Empty Nest starring Richard Mulligan as a widowed doctor with two daughters to premier at a later date. Of course, The Golden Palace starring three of the four Golden Girls was a one season disaster.
Charles In Charge being canceled after one season and re-aring with a semi different cast is very reminiscent of Good Morning Miss Bliss/Saved By The Bell.
CHRISTMAS RECOMMENDATIONS : 1. Home For The Holidays ( season 1 ) Charles, Buddy, Gwendolyn and The Pembrokes with guest star Rue McClanahan. 2. Yule Laugh ( season 3 ) Charles, Buddy, Lillian and The Powells trapped in a cabin during a snow storm.
I wasn't going to subscribe, but the writing, analysis, references and voice over for this channel are friggin gold. Shame about the last spin off. The glue of 80's sitcoms was when characters became a little better. The Mexican boyfriend thing was insane.

THE GOOD (strengths):
Nicole Eggbert alone would have made me watch the show and the dude who played Tackleberry in the Police Academy films is an EXCELLENT comedic actor, so if I was writing the show I would feature him as much as Nicole Eggbert.
THE BAD (weaknesses):
That Balki / Perfect Strangers rip-off character is NOT good.
THE UGLY (ultra weaknesses):
That controversial Mexico related line that came out of Nicole Eggbert's mouth... WTF was that?!? LMAO. Even by 1990 standards, that was pretty horrendous. They need better writers or at least someone that can edit the scripts effectively and filter out the more controversial stuff and just make the stories focus on light hearted and fun stuff.
OVERALL
(in conclusion... I'm writing a damn essay... how did that happen?!? LMAO):
Center the show around Nicole Eggbert, the Tackleberry guy, the Torkelson's girl, and Sarah Powell (IF she's allowed to stick around, I would hope she can stay) and keep the mom around for plot progression reasons (and for the mom to be the "Deus Ex Machina" for the other characters when they get themselves into a crazy situation they can't get out of and need to be bailed out. LMAO). Lose fake Balki and fake Pauly Shore and for the love of humanity, have the writers stick to more fun and light hearted stuff and keep away from any controversial stuff. LOL.
On a last note,
I personally like Scott Baio as a director.
Not freaking EGGBERT
Was that the same café that was use in Happy Days as well as Save by the Bell?
Love what you do!!!! 😊
"how do make spin-off of established characters without having to write them out of the current show? bullseye, identical twins"
I'm stuck on the premise that a character's professor asks one of his students to temp as an assistant manager in a hotel. Hard to imagine why this show didn't last in prime time.
Scott Bayo was the 80s Keanu Reeves; I'm referring to adoration. His name was everywhere and people gushed over him.
I always compared Scott
more to Zac Efron.
Before Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters
in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure",
there was Scott Baio and Willie Aames
in "Zapped".
Scott Bayo is a douche and Keanu Reeves is a respectable human being who cares about others.
@@mrshiftd Enjoy your chemo.
God always gives cancer to trolls who act like a cancer by spreading hatred against innocent people on the internet.
Would have been nice if you took the time to spell his name correctly.
I can’t believe I watched this whole thing. This doc was better than anything that show ever did. Lol
CHRISTMAS RECOMMENDATIONS :
1. Home For The Holidays ( season 1 )
Charles, Buddy, Gwendolyn and The Pembrokes with guest star Rue McClanahan.
2. Yule Laugh ( season 3 )
Charles, Buddy, Lillian and The Powells
trapped in a cabin during a snow storm.
Thanks for this video. Charles in Charge was my favorite show growing up. Although I didn’t like season 1 😵💫
You didn't like The Pembrokes ??
Willie Aames, the Edsel of sitcom comedy relief guys
I remember this stuff!😅 now I know why I forgot until this video!✌🏻
I wasn't going to subscribe, but the writing, analysis, references and voice over for this channel are friggin gold. Shame about the last spin off. The glue of 80's sitcoms was when characters became a little better. The Mexican boyfriend thing was insane.
Haha I didn't even know that this show had attempted to do a spin-off...let alone 3! Well I guess it makes sense seeing how they all happened in the final season. 🤯
Who's The Boss also attempted
3 spinoffs : Charmed Lives, Mona
and Living Dolls.
@@kobrakitsch877I don't recall Charmed Lives but Mona is vaguely familiar. On the other hand, teenage me thought Living Dolls was absolutely brilliant and was crushed when it got cancelled.😂
@@gregmcdonald8962
I hope that you watched and enjoyed
the Atomic Abe Productions video on
the 3 spinoffs from Who's The Boss.
@@kobrakitsch877 I did and definitely remembered all three episodes as I was watching. Charmed Lives looked like it could've had a similar vibe to 2 Broke Girls.
Scott Baio directed 37 episodes of
the 126 episodes of Charles In Charge.
I can't believe anything backdoor related that including Nicole Eggert was a failure LOL
She was pretty when i was a kid. Had no idea Baio was banging her
It would have been funny if in the final scene Charles would have waken up next to Erin Moran. Similar to Newhart 😂😂😂
Genius idea. ❤❤
Charles on "Charles in Charge" was my first boyhood crush.
Any chance you will do any of the backdoor pilots for Facts of Life...or The Cosby Shows backdoor pilot attempt with s1 "mr quiet"? Though the first season of Cosby was a breakout, it was def a bold move for them to try to do a spinoff after just ONE season lol, but I'm also curious about the backstory of that one and if Tony Orlando was fully on board
Backdoor pilot oh man
Your videos are fucking great, keep it up.
Damnit,I cant even see the words Charles in Charge, without that damn theme playing in my head.
the Willie Aames video we didnt know we needed..Willie was the man in the late 70s early 80s
Willie Aames should have received at least
an Emmy nomination or a Golden Globe award in the category of Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for his portrayal of Buddy Lembeck in Charles-In-Charge.
Nicole Eggert was drop-dead gorgeous
Drop dead are the key words.
And of course FAKE ME TOO.
Would gert her eggs.
@@kobrakitsch877 true sir but that doesn’t affect her physical looks
@@A_UA-cam_Commenter
Her eggs have all dried up by now.

After her Splash diving fiasco, 3 court bankruptcy declarations, and eating all the ice cream of her failed business, Nicole gained weight and lost her good looks. That's why she became a very angry woman who falsely accused Scott because she felt that his wife Renee "stole" her happily ever after.
Michael Manasseri played in the Weird Science tv series as well as a few episodes of Wings.
Male pattern baldness
19:35 The human fly was played by Frank Ferrante who now tours with a One-Man Groucho Marx show - look him up, he's very good
Interesting! Will look up his show.
Thank you! When we watched that episode I was trying to figure out what I recognized him from. The human fly has a small amount of screen time but he makes a big impression. Frank Ferrante has a good voice, great delivery. Ideal for playing Groucho.
