Being Mexican (from Hidalgo), coming from a family that follows & keeps alive the Charro & all Mexican traditions....growing up with Mariachi music and real Mariachi bands playing at my parents house very often......I can say this is FANTASTIC!!!!! Love it because they are great, they do it with passion and because this is the way USA & MEX should embrace one another.
I'm mexican and didn't take offense to this. Mariachi music is beautiful, people from all over the world enjoy it. If it inspired them to create their own music, then hey let it be! I think this was an awesome performance, badass güeros & chino right here haha!
Word. if anything they're celebrating Mexican culture. As someone who grew up in and around the Bronx, I can say this directly celebrates the diversity in culture in the Bronx. If anything this is bringing people together.
If anyone is offended they should reflect on why because those were 3 beautiful songs that fit into the genre, if you need to be mexican to play Mariachi music then you need to be black to sing funk or rap, and you need to... do I need to continue? no this is 2018, fuck that bullshit. If the beatles could go to India and come back playing the Djent this should not be a problem.
I can’t help myself, I’ve never been into this music but this.. cmon, if you can hear at all, this is amazing. So thankful to them for sharing this beautiful sound with us. Would be a dream to experience this live. Much love Bronx
Mariachi music is also very much a part of LA, where they're from. It's good that they embrace it and are bringing mariachi music to non Spanish speakers.
People have to find a way to squirt their piss and vinegar, don't they? This is a band of mostly L.A. guys - singer is from Pico-freaking-Rivera! -- who were inspired by what they heard, and took a shot at creating their own version of it. It's FANTASTICO! and it's in English so it's more accessible for the masses, who may even come to appreciate mariachi music in a broader sense. I grew up on Mariachi music blasting in my house, and at family events. I've seen these guys 6 times and each time they blow me away. They are amazing musicians and the songs are beautiful! -- you think David Hidalgo (Los Lobos frontman) may know a think or two about Mexican music? He played on some of their songs, and his son Vicente is in the band! The band admits: "We're not a traditional mariachi band, and that's not what we set out to be. We just want to sound like ourselves, playing this music that we love." So how about the haters go hate on something else, or better yet, just enjoy the damn music! it's freaking awesome!
Why would you spend so much time on these haters mate, haters gonne hate, the dogs are barking but the caravan moves on.. I think this is beautiful, it should all mingle, like a big soup,we should become world citizen, like Bob marley baby, one people, one love.. Peace
Since I couldn't find em anywhere else, here are the performer's names (and what they play in Revolution Girls) Matt Caughthran - Vocals Joby J Ford- Guitar Ray Suen- violin Vincent Hidalgo - Guitar Ken Horne - Jarana jarocha Jorma Vik - Percussion Keith Douglas - Trumpet Brad Magers - Trumpet
Its always refreshing to see artists/musicians reinvent themselves.....I heard these guys on WMNF in the Tampa Bay area.....this is excellent..Thanks!..
It's music & great mariachi, plain and simple. Just because they're not as commercialized as Mariachi Vargas, it doesn't mean they're not good. Mariachi music itself its a merge of styles. Be proud, like many of us to hear such beautiful music played around the globe, thank you NPR! Ya me dieron ganas de echarme unas cervecitas bien heladas y asarme una carnita con esta musica!
+vicben1 They are great-- I first saw them on Jay Leno several years ago and love it. BUT this is not mariachi music-- mariachi influenced, adapted-- whatever. Not only do they sound different, n0t like mariachis-- but mariachis sing in Spanish. These guys are very creative and took our traditional music/sound to develop[ a new one that is fantastic.
This type of music requires a real attention to detail and execution. I'm pretty blown away at how good they are. I mean,.....blown away. The songs are good too. Wow,...
Love mariachi music but don't speak Spanish so the lyrics are a mystery. These guys singing those mariachi songs in english is great. Now I see how beautiful the lyrics are too.
this should be one of the ticket options offered by Live Nation.....spirit animal identification, tickets and some folks to help you thru it all, then some taco bell and a free t-shirt to remember it all
nice to see you today at burro smits tunnle, we had a great ride, thanks for being so cool. bikers are brothers, you rock, love you... griengo and jack.. KTM
music should be inclusive and not exclusive. as a bolillo i love the contrast between their metal punk and this rather authentic mariachi. imo a natural progression.

Well actually mariachi has German influences and some of these guys are gringos so the blending isn't too crazy. Half Mexican here, heeeeey! In any case "salud" guys! Omg I love Norteno Lights!
Traditional mariachi plays Son music (son tradicional), Son that's played with Jaranas is only 1 of 7 styles of Son in México. The music can be picked too, but they use the traditional "requinto" guitar (higher pitch). Of course it's "Norteño" see the name of song, classic norteño doesn't have guitarrón it has:accordion, bajo sexto/quinto, and standing bass(tololoche). Modern norteño might have drums and also horns, saxo not trumpet. Bronx music sounds like old school, not univision/telemundo.
The whole white mariachi thing is kind of like saying it's weird seeing a white blues player or a black rock and roll band. Music will find you no matter what race you are.
I get the point you're making and I totally agree with it, but let's get one thing straight: black dudes invented rock and roll. White artists popularized it but black artists started it up.
@@karimqk1895 rock and roll was a melting pot of many cultures, just as blues was. irish music, bluegrass, country, blues, native american chants, there is not one group of people responsible for rock and roll. stop being divisive.
It's wierd seeing a mariachi composed of mainly white people but I love the sound and fusion you guys have going on. I will definetly download some of your music Mariachi El Bronx. Thank you NPR Music for such a wonderful small show. Keep up the great work Mariachi el Bronx
@@Phantom_Mountain_Art I meant white as in non-Hispanic. My mother was born in Mexico and she is very white. I understand that, I lived in Mexico for 8 years
Mariachi music changing like I have been waiting for years. Listen to “Flor de Toloache” they are so good too. Another genre that needs to change is Banda Music. It’s too ghetto. Bring it up to 2018 with better beats!!
no mames no se qué pensar, supongo están simpáticos?. El Rey se está revolcando en su tumba con esa voz pero bueno cada quien jajajaja viva el mariachi cabrones y Viva México!

This reminds me of a lady riding side saddle, while the horse trots beautifully to show his or hers amazing skills.
I agree. I discovered Mexican music many years ago and fell in love with all of it.. 😊
¡Simón!
Yes, yes, and YES!
There’s Mariachis in Hidalgo?
I am a Mexican guy living in North Carolina. USA. I had never expected to find an American mariachi. This is just amazing. Thank you so much guys.

Jesse Ruiz yeah this would be a hell of a lot of work for an ironic joke.
Jesse Ruiz I really just think they like the style and tried their best to do something respectful and original at the same time.
