It makes the wood look really look real, and I think it adds a real extralevel of realism!
    Things are getting real

Wish there was a slicer setting to add computer generated wood grains to the prints. Great video. Thanks for including links and clear explanations

That would be awesome! Adding textures to a mesh is something that will be VERY popular once a company integrates it into a slicer!

Uh the printer does it, you lightly sand it or not at all. The print lines if you leave them in, when you stain over them the tiny nooks in the lines create a wood grain effect. They over sanded is the issue here, so it was "smooth" so no print lines for the stain to work with.

Good video - just a technical note: real wood stain acts as an optic filter - and it has no binder. That's why you have to seal it with a clear coat (UP, alkyde, PUR, acrylic etc.). "Depth" is a function of refractive index matching between the wood matrix (lignin & cellulose fibers) and the dried binder (the bigger the difference, the less "deep" the effect will be). If your binder also contains color molecules that act as a dye, you get highlights with a warm color hue, which we percieve as "more depth" ... if you overdo it, the results can become somewhat artificial. So, in order to create a "wood" effect, you are basically creating a (semi-transparent) layer on top of your opaque plastic part. If you want an even better effect, you could try epoxy stains in a PUR clearcoat over a lightly pigmented base layer...

So here you aren't expecting the stain to penetrate, but are instead relying on the cured poly? Asked another way, would it make any sense to try stain independent of the poly? With wood I'd skip the poly if I was going to use wax as the finish.

After sanding, try buffing the surface with cardboard. Aligns the fibers, and polishes the PLA.

You should try to skip sanding next time, the layer lines will act like woodgrains. I'm right know printing chess figures with wood filament and tested it on them. It will make your handle even woodier :)

I printed letters for my son's room spelling out his name on the wall out of wood filament. Stained, a few coats -- you should really wipe excess stain, or it won't dry evenly. Then finish it with acrylic poly, it does really look like wood, if you orientate your part so that the printer lines go a certain way you can get it to look like wood grain, that's why I wouldn't sand it too much or you'll lose the effect. Everyone thinks the letters on my son's wall were made in my workshop -- they were, just a different part of my workshop.

You should add some woodgrain texture then do a darker wash, that would really make it pop!

I've stained hatchbox wood pla, it worked well except for the areas that have wood filler in them. The stain over the woodfiller looks a different shade than the PLA, it'll take some time and different layers to get it to appear as a single piece.

instead of wood filler use a 3d pen and the same filament you printed the part with to fill in gaps.

First real issue was too smooth of sanding, if you lightly sand it, the print lines cause tiny gaps and help create a grain effect

I am finding some very mixed messages about whether or not Hatchbox Wood PLA needs a special nozzle or not. Does it really damage a normal nozzle on, say, a Prusa -style printer? Does it require a special nozzle size? I'd love to try this stuff, but I use my printer too much to have it broken by a novelty filament. Please let me know!

    • @MaximilianonMars

Perhaps you know by now, yes wood filament is mildly abrasive and will cause some wear to brass nozzles, but it does so less than other composite materials such as metal fills, phosphorescent (glow in the dark) filaments, carbon fibre fills. You can upgrade to a stainless steel nozzle or better, or you can buy replacement brass nozzles which are extremely cheap (pack of 10 0.4mm nozzles on gearbest for like $2 or £1.50 or so.
