  • Hey there everybody! Today we're doing a bit of a double feature, looking at one of the most influential faces in animation, Don Bluth, as well as the moment that changed the Disney Studios forever, a moment I've dubbed The Disney Exodus.

    Dang, didn't expect it to be that big of a blow to Disney. Don had his reasons and we probably wouldn't have gotten all the great movies he and his team made if he didn't leave.

      Competition does tend to lead to both sides stepping up their games, so in away, this helped kickstart the Renaissance

    This was quite the dark time for the Disney Animation Studio, but like you said and I agree that the mass resignation of talented people might have served as a wake-up call that something was wrong. As for Don Bluth I remember some of his movies and quite enjoyed them and respect his love of animation and the effort he put into the medium.

    Happy that you're back +Joe the Disney Guy also yeah Don Bluth is a great Disney animator but he's not the "Walt Disney" he has been paying a lot of money out of his pocket for making his shorts, video games and animated films with different Studios like Universal, MGM and Fox. But he's a survivor on the animation industry.

    Even though Bluth had good intentions on preserving the animation medium, painting those who opposed him as the bad guys didn't help his case leaving a bad taste in people's mouths. I don't have less respect for Bluth as he's a talented filmmaker, but agreed. He could've handled the situation so much better.

    Joe: You didn't mention about the animated sequence in 1980's film "Xanadu" -- the first completed project by Don Bluth's new studio. The general assumption was that they took on that project as a way to make the money necessary to complete Banjo the Woodpile Cat.

  • @ahatt96

    Great video as always Joe. I find that Don and such leaving was in the end a good thing for Disney as competition tends to lead to better films. As for Don himself I'm a massive fan of his work (hell even his bad movies have some great animation) and his overall life story in the industry is interesting and I hope the Dragon's Lair movie goes well.

    Even as a fan of his works, from the impression I have from interviews and videos about him, Bluth seems to be a hard person to work with. He's rather arrogant, has a tenancy to pick favourites and thinks his way is the automatically best, even if he's wrong. He also seems to be not as receptive to 3d or 2d digital animation, preferring how things were done back in his day, from what he said during interviews. That isn't to say he's a bad person or a less influential animator, but I can see why Bluth would create a rift among the animators. To be fair, I don't blame Bluth for wanting to leave Disney either for the same reasons you said. He was an disgruntled employee, who hated the new direction Disney was taking, so he left to do his own thing.
    With all those others leaving the company and rifts in the studio, saying that Disney was a dumpster fire at the time is an understatement. Something like that happen was bound to happen sooner or later.
    But on the plus side, Don and the others leaving was in the end a good thing for Disney. It was the wake up call for them to get their act together. Competition lead to better films on Disney's end and we got some terrific animated films out of it on Don's end.
    What I find a bit scary is that exact same situation happened again when Dreamworks was created 20 years later. I doubt the Dreamworks Exodus will be the last one. It seems to happen every 20 years or so, so I wouldn't be surprised if happens again in 10 years or even when the CEO steps down in 2021.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  5 років тому +1

      I kinda get that impression about Bluth as well. He is certainly headstrong and very confident/clear on his vision, and sometimes that sort of personality can rub people the wrong way.
      As for the exoduses, I think that these are just the sort of things that sometimes happen in an environment with a lot of creative people. I've seen it to a lesser extent in my line of work, but when you have a lot of people with a lot of ideas, typically conflicting ideas, sometimes that powder keg explodes or sometimes people just decide, like Bluth did, that their vision no longer aligns with the vision of the company. The good news is that typically, this leads to an expansion of concepts/ideas/creative outlets, which is certainly good for everybody

    • @100lovenana
      @100lovenana 3 роки тому +2

      You're right, this exodus will DEFINITELY happen again, seeing what Disney is doing now: Too many live action remakes and sequels, the Star Wars disaster, dependent on Marvel, the death of 2D animation in feature length films. Also how the pandemic is causing a big economic problem for Disney, with the constant lay-offs on its theme parks. I have no idea who is going to make the difference (or how soon) but it won't be that far, it's already been 20 years since DreamWorks began, so yeah, let's see who will rise from the ashes this time...

    Don Bluth leaving opened up the possibility of other animated movies being successful without being tied to "the disney formula". I recently looked at the older Disney movies and I do feel there was something the newer ones lacked, a sort of maturity that kinda went away for a while before the Renaissance happened. I think he and Ralph Bakshi paved the way for more flavors of animation

I am a fan of Don Bluth's work (with a few exceptions and even then the animation is wonderful.) I know you are the "Disney" guy, but have you ever thought about reviewing some of Bluth's work? If so I think now would be a good time as you are almost right in that spot where Disney was not quite back to its height. Just a thought.

    It fascinates me to wonder what Disney would have been if Bluth had stayed and the young animators had remained united. Would the renaissance movies have looked the way they do? Would they have been as successful? Would the movies Bluth produced with his own company have looked different under Disney's watch? I consider the work out of both studios at the time some of the finest pieces of art ever done in the medium of animation. Perhaps in a different state of affairs they all could have been unrecognizable. The world will never know.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  6 років тому

      Definitely one of the great what ifs. Hard for me to imagine that things would have gone the way that they did without this major overhaul at the studio

    I have to admit that Don Bluth directed animated movies that rivaled Disney in the 1980's thru the 1990's, but I do know that he started out as a Disney animator. So maybe we can call this Disney Legends: Don Bluth?

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  6 років тому +2

      Disney Legend is definitely tough because of his role as basically Disney's biggest competition for the bulk of his career, but it will be interesting to see where he fits into Disney history as time goes on

    • @diggerfan9319
      @diggerfan9319 6 років тому +3

      You're right. I mean Don didn't stay at Disney because he didn't like how the late 1970's Disney atmosphere was turning out. And I learned more about him through AniMat's Animation Lookback of Don Bluth. If he stayed at Disney he wouldn't have directed the movies he became famous for including The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Anastasia and Titan A.E. And I hear he is trying to make the Dragon's Lair Movie despite being 80 years old. It's pretty tough to try to make projects of your own when you're an animator working at Disney who wants to resign to find your own path. Then again, some animators move from working up the ladder then they start over like Bluth did.

  • @elphaba4674

    Yeah, Don Bluth, even at his highest point, could never surpass Disney at it's finest. But still I do like some of his movies, and he's made some great ones. Disney is the reason though he didn't stick around at his highest for that long. And The Little Mermaid did cause the Disney renaissance and All Dogs Go to Heaven to fail at the box office (there were released the same day)

    Fascinating video! I can’t help but agree with Mr. Bluth in a lot of ways. 70s Disney really felt soulless to me, even as a kid I really disliked everything from Jungle Book-Rescuers. It was so tonally off to me and the thick black, choppy animation lines just really put me off. Plus they relied too much on cheap visual gags. Fox and the Hound is better but still has that problem.
