- At long last, it's finally here! Today, we take a look at what could possibly be the greatest animated film of all time. It's time we take a look at the tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast.

Just wanted to point out that this video was written and shot waaaaaaay before the death of Regis Philbin, and I left my joke involving him in my video because frankly, I at least didn't think it was offensive to his memory or anything (was more commenting on how Regis would've been all wrong for the Beast), but if any of you did find the joke in poor taste since his passing, the I certainly apologize for that.
Richard White & Paige O’Hara we’re just as wonderful as I thought. I got my book signed and we took pictures. We talked about Paige’s broadway recordings, Robby Benson in Ice Castles, and of course Howard Ashman. It was like stepping back into childhood, it only for a brief moment. As for the live action remake, Paige thinks it’s okay, not the best, but they did what they could. Richard told me, it’s a medium transfer, so things in animation, won’t always transfer to live action as smoothly.
Can you do a review of The Lion King?
@@trentmartin4296 wait after Aladdin
i was wondering about this thanks
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was the first Disney animated film i ever saw in theaters. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
The first time me and my sister watched Beauty and the beast when the narrator said “for who could ever love a beast” my sister said “I think he looks cuddly”
Rest in Peace David Ogden Stiers

Beauty And The Beast is not just my favorite Disney movie, not just my favorite animated movie, it’s my favorite movie period. It’s a masterpiece. Great review, I’ve been waiting for this one!
Great
After The Black Cauldron, aimed more for teens, and The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company, which were made more for kids and their parents, this was a film made for EVERYONE. College kids I worked with saw it, elderly people, kids, teens, adults... It gave animation a respectability not seen since Walt passed away.
This entire series has been building to this very episode and I couldn’t be more excited!!!!
Uhhh he could have kept going
🎵 Certain as the notification 🎵
🎵 so happy I could die 🎵

🎵 joe the Disney guy 🎵
Tale as old as time. We have told Beauty and the Beast stories as long as civilization can remember. Though this has to be the best version of it I have ever seen. This is undisputed gold standard in music, animation, storytelling and filmmaking. This movie made me a Disney kid.
Hey Joe, it's been a long time since I've seen your work and if you're still making these, keep it up! Next we have Aladdin, The Lion King and so much more to cover. And Happy 30th anniversary to Beauty and the Beast.
Yeah I know
You could have mentioned that after The Little Mermaid, Disney´s intention was to make an animation of The Phantom Of The Opera (which was Broadway´s hottest ticket at the time, and had, in its peculiar way, the structure of a fairytale), but they just couldn´t figure out how to make the story less dark and more appealing to younger audiences. Beauty And The Beast had a similar problem (who read the book will know), but as a last minute decision, the switch was made, and they made it work. Well, at least for storyboarding. Then there was the NY Festival date. But well, we all know from there.

He was SO close to Aladdin and The Lion King. I really wish he reviewed them.
What do you mean so close? Do you know what happened?
So glad you've made it to my favourite 2D animated Disney film!
I will be looking forward to your review of The Lion King(1994).
Me too, along with The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996).
16:20 Adriana Caselotti as Snow White, Jodi Benson as Ariel, Paige O'Hara as Belle...I for one would be hard pressed to imagine those 3 in anything other than those respective roles, although Kathryn Beaumont did great both as Alice & as Wendy.
18:25 What Angela Lansbury thought would be just a demo turned out to be the master? Sounds like a moment similar to Ed Wynn's voicing of the Mad Hatter, which was more lively & funny the 1st time than when attempted for an intended master.
Sweet another Disney Guy review
Hey Joe if you're reading I'm a huge fan of your work, keep it up!
Glad to see this review. Beauty And The Beast has always been in my top 3 for favorite Disney movies and I still love it to this day. This movie is also my older sisters favorite Disney movie too so because she loved it I grew up watching this a lot. Can't wait for your Aladdin review
I always found it ironic that Beauty and the Beast, one of Disney’s most successful animated movies, has almost the exact same beginning structure as the Black Cauldron, one of Disney’s most unsuccessful animated movies:
-Both open with the protagonist bemoaning their provincial farm life and longing for adventure.
-Both protagonists then go to a castle in order to save someone important to them.
-They both then encounter a horned monarch.
-They both manage to save the one they came to save, but they themselves become a prisoner in the castle.
That’s always been kind of funny to me.
While on this subject, the realistic smoke was actually recycled at the end of "Beauty and the Beast" where Beast gets turned back into a prince.
its true
The Intro was hilariously "out-of-nowhere" yet the update for your fonts and font transitions are awesome. And, yes, I sincerely like your way to put in song for this review also I agree about Beauty and the Beast for what's not been said already, it's very marvelous.
He has a decent singing voice
Great video, Joe! Really love the new title graphics! As for my thoughts on Beauty and the Beast, what can be said that hasn’t been said about it already: the story is great, the characters are memorable, the animation is beautiful, and the music is fantastic! It’s my second favorite Disney animated film behind Fantasia and my favorite Disney Renaissance film! I feel it should’ve won the Best Picture Oscar instead of Silence of the Lambs. One thing I will add is that I like that the enchanted objects actually serve a purpose in the story outside of just being comedic relief. I always thought of them as guidance counselors for the Beast, seeing as he’s had very little social interaction outside of his servants due to the spell on the castle, as well as for Belle, with them encouraging her to give the Beast a chance to show that there is a sense of humanity and warmth within his soul. Anyway, great job on the video! The amount of time you spent on it was worth it! Take care, dude. Stay safe and I’m looking forward to the next review when we come on down, stop on by, hop a carpet and fly to another Arabian night!
26:53 This is the second time you called Roger Ebert Robert
Beauty and the Beast was lightning in a bottle. The magic could only be captured once and cannot be reenacted or replicated.
Seriously, just imagine if Beauty And The Beast actually won over Silence Of The Lamb. I think animation would be even more respected if it had won. Little Mermaid put these guys on the map and showed Disney was back from the dark ages, but it was Beauty And The Beast that showed they were back and was here to stay. It's really great to show how they managed to find an angle to make the story work and manage to sell it. One of the biggest things I have seen with movies like Beauty And The Beast is finding the right story angle for it to succeed. It does seem that Disney goes through having a slump then one movie lands them back on their feet and makes them stand out again.
Great Video Joe! It's always a treat to see a new review from you.
But I do have to admit that I think your live action presentation is due for some upgrades. If you don't mind I do have a couple suggestions that I think could benefit your channel greatly.
For starters, the background. I think it's time to retire the blank wall, and add some decorative features that will make the background more visually appealing. Maybe some posters, knick knacks, or any other Disney memorabilia. Or even just a green screen so you can add whatever background you want in editing.
I also think the camera needs upgrading. I don't know your budget but I do think you'd appeal to more people with a brighter, sharper image. Perhaps the lighting too, if not a studio light, perhaps you can record by a window that gets good sunlight.
I hope these suggestions help if you decide to take them, if not, I still support your work.
Oh believe me, I work in production so I certainly hear and agree with you on those things. Unfortunately, partially due to financials but more problematic at the moment, space (You can kinda get my office layout from my musical intro, but I quite legitimately have about a body's length between the bed and the door in my filming area), I just don't have the ability to do too much by way of lighting or green screens (wish I could use my studio in my work office, but not able to sadly). Could certainly work on beautifying the wall though, so we'll see how that goes
@@JoeTheDisneyGuy Understood. I wish you the best, and as long as you keep up the passion then more opportunities should present themeselves sooner or later.
Amazing job with this. I am really looking forward to the next two reviews.
hey joe, I thought about this channel recently and I hope you're doing well. This channel was so incredible and I love you for what you were able to put up. I wish we had gotten to Aladdin and Lion King but oh well. I'm rewatching you videos now, especially as I look to put myself in a happy space while falling asleep. I appreciate you greatly, you are an absolute legend.
I'd recommend you check my page a little later today....just sayin
Hey Joe, I hope all is well. Any chance we will see your return and see you tackle Aladdin on its 30th anniversary?
I immediately clicked after seeing this!!!
This totally an awesome upgrade with Title editing. I enjoy your version of "Be Our Guest" and I loved this Disney animated classic. 🥀🎨 Welcome back my friend!
Beauty and the Beast is an excellent film. I love the Broadway version too. I love the angsty Beast songs If I Can’t Love Her and Evermore too.
Very nice opening number. You're quite the singer!!
The way Walt shelved Beauty and the Beast is like when they shelved Peter Pan for WWII.
By the way, are you going to do Pocahontas maybe?
I’m planning on seeing Beauty and the Beast in theaters, the original version, I wasn’t able to see it because I was born in 98, and this came out in 91! I’m case you were wondering Disney is re releasing 8 of their movies back to theaters, they already did Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl, Toy Story (last week to this week) Frozen starts this Friday to August 17, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST STARTS 18!!!!! I’m planning on seeing it the August 21!!!!
This review was certainly worth the wait Joe, thank you! 😊
Good for Linda Woolverton for sticking to her guns. Belle being a more liberated character elevates her above Ariel and most of other princesses in my opinion, especially re-watching them all now in 2020 👍
Thanks for the tip on the Broadway soundtrack - I'm that nerd who loves listening to movie soundtracks in my spare time so I'll definitely check it out!
One thing you have forgotten Joe, Glen keane added the human eyes to the Beast, that was the important part so we can communicate through his heart and soul, and see his true self beyond his appearence.
It's good to see you again Joe. Another great review! However, there are two things that you never mentioned here that I think should have been:
The little red-headed girl with Belle at 7:12 was her younger sister, Clarice who was another character from the London version.
Chip only had one line in the original script. The "cute sidekick" role was initially given to a little music box who communicated through the music it played. However, the crew was so impressed with the delivery of Chip's voice actor, they expanded his role and relegated the music box to a cameo.
So the Clarice thing I never had in any version of my script, but I tried my hardest to work in the Chip story (it's actually in my notes) but I just couldn't find a home for it without messing up my flow. A great story though!

It’s been a year and still no new videos. What happened? Did Joe give up?
No I’m guessing he still wants to make videos just has too demanding a schedule. Hopefully he’ll get a vacation soon.
omg glad your back!!😁cant wait for this renaissance era😉
Holy #**# Joe’s back. It’s about time too.
Never stop making videos! This is one of my favourite UA-cam channels!
Two more videos to go until The Lion King. Looking forward to that and Aladdin
I remember one of my high schools did a production of the stage version and my sister was in it. She was the first
"Bonjour" and said the line "Is he dangerous". But the most fun part was two of my good friends playing as Belle and Gaston, they were actually dating at the time and it was so funny seeing the one playing Belle hating her boyfriend who was playing Gaston. Still, I wish they quite saying this movie is Stockholm Syndrom when there's evidence that it's not and obviously Lima Symbrom. It's a phenomenon in which abductors develop sympathy for their captives, named after the abduction of the Japanese Ambassador's Residence in Lima, Peru in 1996 by members of a terrorist group. Those terrorist end up showing mercy on their captives and ended up letting them go. When Beast falls in love with Belle he did the right thing and let her go. And what I love about the Broadway version is that it expanded Belle a little and she opened up on how she was different and how it made her an outcast in her town to Beast and they bounded on how society shuns them because they are different. So in a way, Belle was a beast herself and Beast saw the beauty in her.
I wanna see the rest of the renaissance era reviewed joe! Love ur n depth reviews

@@JoeTheDisneyGuy2 years later, what’s going on?
I was looking forward to this episode alot and it did not disapoint at all!
This film has become my favorite disney film which is funny since i saw the remake before seeing the original. But after seeing the original beauty and the beast at the begining of 2018, i watched seven more times that year because its so good. The film also led me to appreciating animators alot more like glen keane, aaron blaise, Mark Henn, and Eric Goldberg for their amazing work.
Thanks joe for making another great review and cant wait for your next video, hope you have a great week. (Also I so hope the beauty and the beast ride coming to tokyo comes to orlando and california soon.)
Wait you saw the remake before the original
One of the best animated movies of all time !!!!
Music in this movie is incredible.
Rip Howard Ashman. Thank you for these amazing songs.
For me this movie should have won Best Picture. Yup i said.
By the way nice graphics
Fantastic review Joe and good see you once again and stay safe and take care 👍🏻.
did you know that the guy who is now voicing donald duck, Tony Alselmo work on all the disney reniscene, movies , on beauty and the beast he work on the waredore.
This movie ranks as one of my favorite movies ever. In terms of Disney films, this one is actually my second favorite, only behind The Lion King, which I look forward to seeing you review. Of course, we have to get past Aladdin first, but that is something I’m also looking forward to, since Aladdin is another one of my favorites.
Jerry here,
I'm eager to get to Pocahontas. That one is, uh . . . yeah.
It's nice to see you again, Joe and you updated your series very well ^^
Be our guest! Be our guest! Be our guest!
Great
Now, it's stuck in my head
It's a great song, though
“Obviously, _Beauty and the Beast_ is fantastic. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would debate that.”
I don’t think we need to look too hard. Do you know of someone by the name of, oh, I don’t know... Lily Orchard?
This is probably either aging me out or showing my ignorance but I truly don't and I keep seeing her mentioned here and I feel bad I don't know her!
I’ve been waiting for this ever video since discovering your channel a couple of years ago! Amazing video as always..I’ll admit I teared up a little at Ashman’s story..I never knew he was so involved in the groundwork of the film.
Thank you! And Ashman is one of my favorites, keep an eye out because I'll certainly be talking more about him soon
Beauty and the beast was one of the first movies I ever saw in theaters it will always hold a place in my heart
This channel deserves more love. You're doing a great job.
That whole idea of a villainous aunt just wouldn't have worked and would have tanked the pacing, and Belle in those drawings almost looks like a far cry from what we got.
I used to hate Disney Movies when I was a kid, because I hated musicals and love at first sight stories ....but then at my 13 I watched this movie and I LOVE IT. Everything in this movie identified me; feeling an outsider , being a bookworm, being unpleasant with my appearance, searching for the one accepting me the way I was looking through the outside ....this is my ONLY favorite Disney movie and I can't count how many times I've seen it's scenes and dialogues in both English and Latin Spanish (I am Latin). Thanks for bringing such a compelling video about my beloved classic
Be our guest, be our guest...
Be our guest!
I just recently discovered your videos cause I'm doing my own written disney reviews, and your input has been so helpful in making me realize why I love tho movies. I just wanna say thank you and wished I discovered your channel sooner. Now you review my favorite Disney movie!! I'm so hyped!

@@LaneWinn Me, too
Been patiently anticipating this video for awhile and it did not disappoint!
To be fair, even though I would absolutely love to live in an alternate universe where we got a Beauty and the Beast adaptation headed by Mr Williams, I think it's understandable, even necessary, that he rejected the offer to do so. After exhausting himself and his animators on Roger Rabbit, and making enough money from that endeavour to help partially complete The Thief, it's natural that he would want to focus his energy on the latter. By the end of the 1980s Richard was pretty much done with taking on commercial projects from Disney, Fox, etc, and kind of just wanted to finally do the thing he'd been trying and wanting to do since the 1960s. After all, Richard was rightfully suspicious of Disney as a corporation, and how many more big blockbuster features would he have to be commissioned to do until he could finally just make his own thing? How much longer would his passion project have to be postponed because of a new Raggedy Ann, Roger Rabbit, or car commercial?
It's kind of absurd to think that turning down the offer to work on BatB was what caused the poor box office reception of The Thief. It's a whole rabbit hole to go into, but Richard was more or less kind of stabbed in the back by Warner Bros.
Good singing voice.
For me beauty and the beast is not only my favourite Disney movie/not only my favourite animated movie/but my favourite movie of all time period!😁😁😁🎉🎉🎉
Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney Animated Canon movie, and my 10th favorite motion picture period. I was 5 when I first saw it, and I bawled my eyes out at Beast's "death" because of how much I loved and identified with the character. While I had other phases and attatchments to newer things as I got older, I am continually impressed every time I revisit this film to see how every part of it moves me.
So I guess Joe gave up? Such a shame cause this was a really good series
I hope he gave at least an update. I binged all of the Disney Guy reviews, and I’ve been really worried.
@@angelcastaneda529I thought he stopped
Please talk about Aladdin next?! Beauty and the Beast was wonderful and the other is a great showstopper. You never, had a, film like that!!!
Very well done great job on this review 👏 greetings from Dublin ireland
Nice singing in the intro Joe!!!
Aw shucks, I don't know if I believe you but I'll take it!
I love Beauty and the Beast. While I love The Jungle Book more, because it was my first movie going experience during it's 1991 theatrical re-release, as well as my first full length animated movie as well, Beauty and the Beast is special to me because it's a movie that I didn't watch with anybody else, except my younger sister. I've never watched it with a girlfriend or with friends, just either by myself or with my sister. It's also the one Disney movie that my sister and I can both agree on is the best animated Disney movie of all time. So I think it ties with The Jungle Book as my favourite Disney movie of all time.
Nice update joe! This is gonna be cool.
I have been waiting for this episode for a long time.
It's debatable on what the greatest animated movie of all time is. Some say it's Snow White, some say it's Pinocchio, some say it's Fantasia, some say it's Beauty and the Beast, some say it's The Lion King, and some say it's Toy Story.
Yeah I know
Reviewing such a masterpiece like Beauty and the Beast is impossible. But, you my man are able to do this movie justice more out of anyone on UA-cam. You Joe are the king.
This movie s a masterpiece
Well, that was definitely quite a surprise. I certainly enjoyed the new graphics in here, the silly introduction at the start, and the review itself. I'm with everyone too, when I say I really love this film too. with so many things to love about it with its animation, story, and characters. Of course, there's more too. One is that I got some Belle clones in my life too since they look like her and the other is that this came out the exact same year I was born in. In fact, just almost a month after the film itself was out. So, it's a really special film to me for those reasons. But yeah, best review I've seen from you.
Joe the Disney Guy!! I LOVE Beauty and the Beast. It is my favorite Disney Film. I like the version without Human Again the best. Do you prefer the song Human Again or not?? I personally feel that Be Our Guest slows things down a bit. Also how much time passes in the movie??
Nice another video i always love your video's 💪😁❤
Could you give me the link to the version of Be Our Guest you used during your review of the masterful film?
Have you seen the documentary Howard
I actually just found time for it this week, it was very good but I'm biased just because of how much I love Howard Ashman's work
Still watching the movie after about 25 years and it still amazes me. Such an amazing film with some of the best songs in Disney films.
I liked the French location and Gaston!
Honestly, seeing as Kirk Wise, and Gary Trousdale directed Beauty & The Beast, I do find it interesting that the three Disney films that they directed, 1991’s Beauty & The Beast, 1996’s The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and then 2001’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, all came out five years apart from each other. I also liked how Beast and Hunchback at least were give 4/4 stars by Siskel and Ebert. Anyway, do I think that Beauty & The Beast is one of Disney’s best works. Very much so. However, I do think that 1994’s The Lion King may be slightly better in my opinion, but not by much.
Another thing that I liked was how, in at least Beauty & The Beast, and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, there’s this theme of “Who Is The monster, and who is the man?”. They both seem to have some good symbolism too. Atlantis: The Lost Empire may have had a tiny bit of symbolism too, but not as much as the other two Disney films that were directed by Wise and Trousdale.
I also loved the songs from Beauty & The Beast as well. Oh, and I liked the remake of Beauty & The Beast. Well, great review once again, and looking forward to seeing you review the remaining Disney Animated Canon films for this segment! Oh, and I really enjoyed your hilarious intro with your parody of “Be Our Guest.”
Where did you go?
