      Had one of these for a bit, it’s quite frankly impressive how much they put in spec wise. It’s a solid workhorse on a budget. All I did was a fret polish and setup, it’s a no nonsense rocker. I actually recommended this guitar to my students. That said, I’d mod it up. At least the neck, get a new neck with a stronger bolt to the body. Graphite nut, locking tuners. Maybe throw on a kill switch or a tone knob?

    • @bfluker85
      @bfluker85 Рік тому +2

      The thing you aren’t considering, however, is volume. Brass hardware is made in significantly smaller quantities which will almost always result in a higher cost per unit. The cheap generic hardware that is put on most guitars in this price range cost pennies because of the volume they are made in.

    I bought one of these in crappy black finish shortly after they were on the market. I remember having a subscription to Guitar Player and Earl Slick shilled these pretty hard in print, so I went for it thinking I was gonna get a hearty Les Paul knockoff. I was wrong. It's got it's own sound, very thick. The bridge pickup is Honk City, hardly useable (unless you know some sweet Middle Eastern scales!). The mid-range pours out of it, and I'm heavy on the EQ when I use it since my 80's style requires a TON of treble. It sounds terrific through a compressor, but then, most things do (pending you know how to use compressors). It's been almost 8 years and I've had few issues, which is cool since it's such a simple guitar with a single volume knob and the obligatory pickup switch. Everyone who's played it over the years had loved it! Sound and playability are both check, it feels good, easy to play. Build quality, however, remains spotty, as many have stated here. There is literal overhang of the fretboard that surpasses the bottom of the neck on mine lol!! WTF?

  • @cerebrix
    @cerebrix Рік тому

    Hunter. Just something I would add since you mentioned it. You said you wanted your sig to have a finish like that but couldn't find a place cheap enough to do wood filler. Well, these guitars don't use filler at all. They just hit the raw body with a single coat of automotive paint and then sand it back. They mention it in a few of their videos. So if you're still scratching your head. The key is not finding the right filler, it's not using filler at all to get a finish like this apparently. Automotive paint is crazy cheap in volume so that's one of the ways they're also saving a ton of money on these guitars.

The burnt cherry finish is beautiful . The set up was surprisingly good. Unlike yours my fret ends were fine, and the weight was a reasonable 8.5 lbs. I did have to lightly sand the neck as it felt a bit rough. The pickups are amazing for this price point. Much better than on the $325 Harley Benton LP I bought recently. From most honest and decent players who have reviewed this line say many of the same things. Great hardware, heavy weighted, cool finish, great bridge, nice wood on the neck, nice finish on neck but frets that aren’t flush to neck and that are gritty (but the grit can be easily polished, well set up on arrival, great control cavity with room for mods. So you’re pretty much spot on with your review which makes me have to buy one. I’ve been looking into these guitars for four years now, In the meantime I purchased 6 Strats, 3 Gibson Les Paul’s, 3 Ernie Balls, a Line 6 DT 25 (great sounding amp that can’t be repaired because line is discontinued so How much wanna pay more than the value of the amp you’re screwed),a tweed blues Junior - in my opinion over rated and currently way over priced (I bought as a practice amp, too loud if you want decent tone, with no headroom, collapses when you try to hit that sweet spot that when you think you found when you dig in it becomes a flubby,tubby, and muddy sludge machine), a tweed Fender deluxe - great amp (but too loud for practice), a Blackstar HT Club 40 MK II with EL 34s ( killer amp with attenuation but even at 1 watt you have to really get that volume control up there but no complaints), VOC AC15-great by itself but pretty loud, key is to crank the power section, get the preamp volume at at least 9 o’clock preferably higher, turn you guitar volume at about halfway, get a transparent overdrive even with high gain and amp in a box pedals with mid to high gain-the Fulltone Plimsoul, OCD, the MXR EVH 5150, a Friedman BE OD, a Jetter GH 124 (Dumble in s box), a Caitlin Bread Dirty Little Secret (Plexi in a Box) to name a few. Based on the gain level turn it down all the way or up to 9 o’clock and use the pedals volume to control volume. Now your AC15 plays with all the vintage fullness of an amp with the power tubes giving you warm natural sounding distortion when you turn your guitar volume up and a touch dynamic note blooming monster when you get the volume on edge of break up with medium attack, clean with light touch and crunchy with a little dig), a Fender Bassbreaker 15 (awesome tone but unfortunately it is a servicing nightmare).
    But I digress, $20,000 plus later and I could have saved myself probably $5-$8 thousand had I bought 3 slick guitars and cases. Almost all the Strats were inconsistent dogs (unless you have $5 k to buy a custom shop, imho you have to play every strat in the house whether Mexican, Japanese or American. Frankly, my best sounding Strats Included an incredible Japanese that I traded for an awesome Gibson SG but I should have traded my least favorite LP and gotten some cash on top of it. The only Strats I have left is the America lone star with Texas specials (Sounds like Stevie Rays Strats). The other 2 American both HSS (a big mistake). He want a good strat than buy ones with three single coils and play a lot of them. If you want a super strat buy a Charvel, EVH, Suhr, Musicman or Ibanez. Fenders HSS simply don’t work and the volume pot is in the wrong place. I bet the Slick Super Strat sounds significantly better
    But I digress

      For the side you need a bevel file. You can make one easily yourself, but it's a bit of a pain. Been there, works well. But if the frets are filed down properly, no fret rocker etc. is needed, but fret end finishing files, the bevel file, sandpaper etc. so in the end it will also cost out quite some money and requires some skill.

    I have an Xaviere lp style guitar that has a Floyd Rose tremolo and coil splits and a flame top from Guitar Fetish and for $309. The quality is good enough that I can't figure out how they sale them that cheap. Check one out. I've been looking at those Slick guitars and thinking about getting one.

    I like the Xaviere line better from GFS. I got a lemon-burst, single-cut, carved top, its got a 1/2" maple top (the flame is just a veneer though, its not a full 1/2" of flamed maple), mahogany body, set neck, extra long neck tenon, the pickups are on their removable system... and also less than $300. Either way, GFS is a good place to spend your money.

    It looks reminiscent of a first act with that headstock. Otherwise as a beginner and intermediate player these days even with the recent inflation you have some great low cost options for guitars, amps, pedals etc.

    amazing value.
    ........other brands will hammer you on $ for some of those specs.......
    Like you say, with any budget guitar line, there is always going to be some guitars
    that are dragging the larger bunch down......it's just about a QC thing..... and the speed they need
    to get them out of the factory (i believe)
    But i believe it's a low percentage of the bunch that "could" have small issues and
    there is always returns to have it replaced.......
    without you saying it, i was guessing you felt you could have "superimposed" that guitar into even
    a lower "Schecter spot"..... and it would still have holded it's own....
    i heard of Slick a few years back and appreciate your review of on "honest to god" guitar
    which IS very good.
    V.

    I am in the market for a special/jr. This guitar seems like something i would want but I wonder how it feels.

    I have purchased hardware from these guys make good replacement hardware for kits. The kits are hit and miss. As to weight, picked up a Chapman the other day at a Music-Go-Round, amazed by how heavy it was.
