You don't need an extra program to change the partition sizes. With Macrium you can adjust the partition sizes and positions on the new SSD before cloning. Simply delete the partitions on the new SSD in Macrium and then drag the partitions one by one onto the new SSD and change their size and position. Hi. A couple of questions. 1 - couldn't you have installed that Macrium on that spindle drive? 2 - Wouldn't it be easier to use something like Clonezilla or Rescuezilla? No need to cut/paste either way. Not trolling, just askin'. Tnx!
Good questions. I installed Macrium on the SSD for speed. Running off the spindled drive would have been a) not the "standard" way of installing software (anything other than C, basically) and b) it would have made the cloning process slower. Too often I get comments about "keeping it simpler", so I just try to do what most people are already familiar with. And again, this was a demonstration of how I work on client machines, just my way, your methods may vary. But you're not wrong about the cutting and pasting. And Clonezilla and Rescuezilla are also great alternatives. I just find Macrium easier. Again, just my preferences. Great questions though! 👍
@@AskYourComputerGuy Yup, you're right. I sometimes forget that step-by-step is a necessity. Been in this tech world too long, I guess. BTW, just subbed.
Question is there a reason that the cloning software was not put on a bootable USB drive to avoid moving data to create room for the cloning software and then put back the data after cloning, it seems to be an extra step that can be avoided. I use Hiren's Boot CD/USB which is free and has plenty of free cloning programs, and sometimes I use Acronis for cloning from a USB boot media
Yeah, I probably could have. Client had some other requests that weren't relevant to the video topic, so I just did the "typical" demo. But you're not wrong on either count. And Hirens definitely has some great tools, but that would be a totally confusing step for a lot of people (versus a quick download). Believe me, my video about creating a Hirens boot disk...I get more comments about how that's "so difficult" 🤷♂️

You kept referencing version 8.43; but on-screen it shows 8.0.7783. Shouldn't it show 8.43? Currently on majorgeeks it shows the free edition is 8.0.7783, instead of 8.43. It's confusing.
MG used to host 8.43, but for some reason it only shows 8.07 now. It's fine - the point is don't go to Macrium's website and download the latest version of the software because it's not free. 8.43 "and older" will all work perfectly 👍
I searched for Macrium Reflect 8.43 on Major Geeks and all it returned Macrium Reflect FREE Edition 8.0.7783. Will this version still work to clone? Thanks
@@AskYourComputerGuy Yes, but the problem now, is when I try to expand the C:\ drive to use the rest of that allocated space, as you show in your video, the menu selection to do it is grayed out and won't allow the rest of the space to be taken up as part of the C:\ drive, it keeps wanting me to make another drive with it. By the way, this is on a laptop, with Win 10 and my recently added SSD your videos convinced me to upgrade to. 🙂
So you've just cloned your drive. On the original drive you have registered software/App. Will the software still think it's the same drive, or will you have to activate the software again?
I suppose when you go through the initial setup and it asks for an installation directory, you could theoretically tell it to install a flash drive...just never done it. Don't see why it wouldn't work (on paper)

Likely won't work if the hardware is different. The clone is an exact copy of your software and hardware on a particular device. Can't hurt to try, but dont hold your breath
I have a 6 yr old HP laptop which has developed a bad habit of turning off at will. I have tried researching the internet and UA-cam to resolve this issue but no luck. Any advice most aprpeciated.
@brabham9925 gotcha. first, it's always possible it's a Windows problem, so if I were working on it, I'd absolutely wipe the drive and install Windows clean. If problem persists, it's going to be something hardware. Motherboard, CPU, RAM or fan. Clean out the fans through exhaust port with compressed air, wait for results. If problem persists, it *could* be RAM, though unlikely. I'd remove one stick at a time. If that fails, it can only be motherboard or CPU, which are usually all in one, at which point I'd scrap and replace the laptop
Hi Scott, Need your help. The story is long so please bear with me. I closed my office and brought my desktop (3) ccomputers home. I had a peer to peer windows network with one machine acting as the server (running Windows 10 pro on that as well as client machines). I needed to keep the server machine active at home to preserve my data files for my former customers. A few years before this happened my server files were moved to an older machine (about 10 years old) to facilitate an upgrade of my proprietary business software. Soon after I got the server home my power supply died. I replaced it and got the server up and running again. However, the machine is very slow and I suspect other components are dying. I thought if I could transfer the drive on the server temporarily to another machine I could rebuild the server in the interim. I started by cloning the server drive with Macreum to a spare spindle drive and installing it in one of my former client machines. Of couse it wouldn't boot. I thought I might try using rufus to run the Windows 10 troubleshooting feature to fix the startup files but that didn't work. At the moment I'm stuck. The server drive is GPT.
If the machines are different models, that could be the cause. Cloning an OS drive setup for one specific make/model with one set of hardware isn't likely to work on another machine with different hardware. I'd put the drive back in the server, then transfer the client data to a folder on one of the other machines across your network. Then with the data safely stored, start working on what's causing the server to run slow. Hard drives are about the only hardware that will cause a machine to run slow in your situation
Macrium has a feature that will image the drive and preserve the OS. Would it be ok to save the image to, say an NVME drive ( I have one enclosed in a usb adapter case), replace the failing drive in the server, and transfer the image to the new drive? One of my big concerns is not having to reinstall my proprietary business software because I no longer have support from that company. Ultimately I want to rebuild the server machine with a new motherboard and processor.
Because the registry was told to look to the HDD for the game files. You can't just move them. You'll have to reinstall the game properly on the C drive
A problem I still have is...I have an older DELL that I want to install win10 on. The computer now has win 8.1 and works OK. I made a win10 bootable installation USB. Every time I try to install it I get error messages just when it starts copying the files. I tried several good working SSD"s and spinners. No go. Reset the BIOS. NO go. Tried different size and brand memory modules. No go. Flashed to the last BIOS that was available. No go. Tried booting UEFI and legacy in BIOS. No go. This computer doesn't want to accept a new install of windows. Tried to install using DVD...No go. The installation media works fine on other computers but not this one. Been a stumper for a while now.
I have / had a very similar problem with Dell laptops - basically - they don't want to play - and like you - I ran everything - reset everything - downloaded everything. The ONLY thing that worked was my original USB backup stick. I know that sucks as an answer - honestly - I've been in IT for years.... I'd slap me!!!! But I couldn't find a fix. SOMEHOW - the original USB backup works. And I tried partitioning, exploits, just... fricking all of it. And BIOS UEFI, blah. Whatever Dell have done - they broke it good. Mine are Dell 3552s, I think? Win 10, 4 and 8 GB... If you're stuck - reply - I'll upload the image that gets mine working. Be aware I live in Spain and uploading is - SLLOOOOOW - so please be calm.
when installing win10 did you delete all the partitions that have win 8.1 on it, this will however wipe everything clean (clean install) but is will create a the new partitions necesarry for win10, a long time ago i upgraded from win7 to win10 i did a clean install and wiped the existing partitions, and then started the new install
I used several new and old HD's and SSD's wiped clean. No partitions. Even did a low level format. 8.1 will reinstall with no problem. Tried different flash drives using Rufus to install the ISO and let Microsoft burn the flash drive for me but they won't take. Got to be something with the motherboard that's causing the problem. @@ronnyb5890
@@AskYourComputerGuy ya I purchased 8.0 years ago.. sad to see it go full on paid, but i cannot seem to find an 8.43 free only the 8.0.77 have you tried driveimage XML?
Macrium 8.43 used to be available on Major Geeks. It defaults to an older version, which (as stated, being 8.43 "or older") still works. Not sure why they don't host that version any longer, but the point is that an older version is what one needs to use.
Great Video. I have some questions. If the spinnig drive has programs installed, and you copy/write the content to the new ssd, how will it work? The registry will tell that the programs are installed in another location where it is now? I thougt the way was to copy the 1 tb drive to a new partition on the new ssd and manke that partition to use the same drive letter so the registry informations would match again? So i was a little confused when you made the new ssd without a second partition to obtain the spinning 1 TB spinning disk.
If programs are installed onto the spindle (which would slow you down dramatically if your OS is on an SSD), if you move that program data, programs won't work. Registry is going to look to the spindle drive for the software when running
Yes i know that. But maybe you had to install programs on the HDD because of lack of space on the ssd, I think the programs would increase when copied to the ssd drive in a new partition saved as the same drive letter the old drive had. I made a swich from a 20 GB drive to a 80 GB drive ower 20 years ago, and I remembered that I then used Fdisk to make the disk ready for cloning the old system ower to the new disk. I ran Windows 98 SE at that time.@@AskYourComputerGuy
@johnpedersen8387 oh yeah, I understand. You could theoretically move the files and edit the registry to reflect the changed location, but that's a lot of editing. Probably easier to just reinstall the program and do it right 👍
Too complicated. Several completely unnecessary steps. I'm not sure about the need for a scheduled automatic data copy for the home computer. I'm not sure that a complete clone of the system drive is obtained, but I could be wrong. I use Cobian Backup for data backup, there are no redundant messages like in trial versions of other programs.
Perhaps, but this was a data migration project from a small drive to a larger one. Since this was for a client, I simply demonstrated (for those who might need it) how to create an automated backup when they might not have one already in place. Your needs may vary 👍

@mkrleza LOL no worries! And I appreciate the sub 👍
Tried keysfan for office 21. Transactions won’t go through kicked back 2 credit cards. Tried 2 browsers and through iPhone. No luck
Oh, this id gonna be good!
Hi Scott, this is exactly what I need. Help!! Question…when I try to extend my new drive to the unallocated it says it’ll be converted to basic disk to dynamic disk. Then virtual disk manager says “the operation is not supported by object”. Thank you for the great video!
Not uncommon. Use Aomei Partition Assistant free and it will extend the partition:

You kept referencing version 8.43; but on-screen it shows 8.0.7783. Shouldn't it show 8.43? Currently on majorgeeks it shows the free edition is 8.0.7783, instead of 8.43. It's confusing.
MG used to host 8.43, but for some reason it only shows 8.07 now. It's fine - the point is don't go to Macrium's website and download the latest version of the software because it's not free. 8.43 "and older" will all work perfectly 👍
@@AskYourComputerGuy Thanks for clarifying the disconnect. 👍
@harblz57 no worries 👍
I searched for Macrium Reflect 8.43 on Major Geeks and all it returned Macrium Reflect FREE Edition 8.0.7783. Will this version still work to clone? Thanks
Absolutely! Just needs to be that version or older. Sorry for not clarifying 👍
Great video, pretty much as I do for my friends/computer group, just moved from Macrium to Diskgenius as it does on the fly resizing easily.
Big question. Can you only extend the remaining space of the drive when it is NOT the C: drive?
When it is allocated space, it's not C or any other drive letter. It's just that, u allocated 👍
I did this for years with Norton Ghost. Does FBACKUP have the option to shutdown when it's done?
Ghost was amazing back in the day! 100%
So you've just cloned your drive. On the original drive you have registered software/App. Will the software still think it's the same drive, or will you have to activate the software again?
Great question! Negative. Nothing changes. It's an exact duplicate. Boot to the drive and go!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!
Yes, I tried cloning the disk over but I keep on getting a warning clone field error 8 can you help me on this one?
Looks like a memory issue:

Could Macrium be run from a flash drive?
I suppose when you go through the initial setup and it asks for an installation directory, you could theoretically tell it to install a flash drive...just never done it. Don't see why it wouldn't work (on paper)
Umm, 40GB is 31.25% of 128GB.

I was going to try to move my downloads, documents, pictures , and folder to a non-microsoft cloud partition but it isn't available.
Why not just create a new partition and move the data there? I made a video on how to do that if you'd like the link
@@AskYourComputerGuy I know how to create new partitions. But how do you get microsoft to not have the pointers that make programs install on the one-drive some of the software components.
@robinpettit7827 you can change the default library locations pretty easily:

Onedrive should pick up the new library location (or you might have to, at worst, go into Onedrive and point to the new locations. Otherwise, uninstall OneDrive if you don't need it or want it 👍

Log onto your Microsoft account on your PC. Then go to settings, accounts. Delete the local account, with or without removing data). You're done. Anything in that account will be wiped (unless you choose to keep it) and it will be gone from your PC

Hey can you use the backup to go from a win10 computer to a new win11 computer. Asking in advance of security update stopping in October 2025
Likely won't work if the hardware is different. The clone is an exact copy of your software and hardware on a particular device. Can't hurt to try, but dont hold your breath
Sorry I meant the Fbackup program for data only not cloning am working on browser version of you tube and can’t edit at will
I have a 6 yr old HP laptop which has developed a bad habit of turning off at will. I have tried researching the internet and UA-cam to resolve this issue but no luck. Any advice most aprpeciated.
I would suspect motherboard first. Does this ever happen when on battery only?
No battery. Always plugged in to power. How would I know it is motherboard and would I have to replace the board and CPU?@@AskYourComputerGuy
Love this video. So much good information. Thank You much.
You are so welcome!

@clausen41 yes, correct
None of the installed games on the HDD will work , once moved to the new SSD drive. once the old HDD has been deleted through
Because the registry was told to look to the HDD for the game files.
Have you tried formatting the installation drive first, not letting Windows handle it as part of the installation process?
Be aware I live in Spain and uploading is - SLLOOOOOW - so please be calm.
when installing win10 did you delete all the partitions that have win 8.1 on it, this will however wipe everything clean (clean install) but is will create a the new partitions necesarry for win10, a long time ago i upgraded from win7 to win10
i did a clean install and wiped the existing partitions, and then started the new install
@@ronnyb5890
suggestion, why don't you just take an image of that drive and install that image onto the 2 TB? just a suggestion that's all
That would have worked just as well I find cloning is just faster, but either one would work 👍

Yes, that's what's available from Major Geeks. Important thing is "version 8.43 and OLDER" are free. But as you saw, 8.077 works just fine as well
@@AskYourComputerGuy ya I purchased 8.0 years ago.. sad to see it go full on paid, but i cannot seem to find an 8.43 free only the 8.0.77 have you tried driveimage XML?
Talks Macrium 8.43 for an hour and continues to click on 8.07 .... :)
